All the talk about rings sent me down the black hole of Etsy looking at vintage jewelry. I LOVE vintage jewelry and there's some fine stuff on Etsy. Pink Cashmere I'm with you on the quality of a diamond - you should shop where they provide a GIA (Gemological Institute of America) analysis on your stone. This would provide the color and clarity rating of the stone. It should also be conflict-free. Who wants a Blood Diamond mined by slaves under horrific conditions, to fund civil wars? Canadian diamonds are not blood diamonds. So, what sets Canadian diamonds apart? They are ethically and responsibly sourced. Mining is a well-established industry in Canada and the Canadian government has lots of rules in place to ensure safe and environmentally conscious diamond mining. Companies mining in Canada must complete lengthy environmental impact studies before beginning any operations. The mineworkers are paid fair wages and many mines employ local and indigenous populations, so the profits from diamond mines are kept within the community. Canadian diamonds are a great option if you're looking for a responsibly sourced and conflict-free diamond. www.gemsociety.org/article/canadian-diamonds/

So, the farmers are going to Capitol Hill to ask for more subsidies/handouts? How much do American Farmers rely on "government handouts" to survive? OK, the above is somewhat sarcastic... but there's a grain of truth in there... How much do American Farmers rely on government money? (and isn't that kind of communistic or socialist or something Republicans hate.... ) A kernel of truth?

No one who runs for President ever has 100% support of their chosen political party. Like any incumbent President, Biden is running for re-election unless he actively chooses not to. It will be far more interesting to see who stands up as candidates for the GOP and whether they have the financial support to make it until the selection. Apparently the Koch brothers are going to choose the next GOP candidate by pouring vast sums of money behind their preference. It's one Koch. The other died in 2019.

I will jump on the bandwagon and add that not only it will give you something to look forward to next few months and make it easier to survive the daily grind, but we all live vicariously through our friends’ fun activities, or the trips that Mich and Athena would describe. Go for us if not for yourself 😉 Yes, I agree - I live vicariously through other's trips. My DH will never consent to go on a cruise as he gets motion sickness. I do very much enjoy the accounts of Mitch's cruise even knowing a cruise is not in my future. We will make other choices and enjoy them just as much though. Althena has been on my mind. I really hope she comes back. One of my NY resolutions was to use more of a budget like she does for my spending on personal wants. She had a very strict budget for a clothing allowance. I think it is easier when you are already retired, as you have less formal events to attend, but honestly my closet is so full I could probably wear a different outfit every day for a month. Part of the reason I have so many choices is that my weight stays relatively consistent and I don't like my clothing super tight, so even if I gain 5 pounds, everything will still fit me. But even though she had a very healthy income, a big reason she had it was a lifetime of budgeting and saving. She budgeted so she could travel. It is not someone else's problem if I don't have enough income to make the same choices, but even people here with lower incomes have really been very successful in accumulating a good size nest egg. Why don't you go without him? My mother used to regularly take off to Greece or Russia, because my father refused to fly. He could take care of himself. Maybe a short cruise?

I'm debating making turkey tetrazzini tonight. debating, bc I don't have any mushrooms and I'm not sure I wanna go back out today. my friend B just left a little while ago, we've been schmoozing for a few hours over brunch. mooch never made it up here today. anyway, this Recipe Tin Eats recipe is what I'll be following, if I do get off my butt in the next hour or so. a half batch will be plenty to use up more leftover turkey. the pups are helping a ton (white meat only for them) as well. I didn't bother actually freezing any of it this time. ETA: scratch that for tonight, we all got a break from turkey tonight. I did go out to pick up mushrooms and some parsley, and found popcorn chicken on the hot bar. I grabbed about 1/2lb for the three of us. I tossed mine in a lazy salad with romaine, pico de gallo, crumbled queso fresco, guacamole and a little vinaigrette. the goobers inhaled their dinner bowls and are now both staring at me while I eat. creepers. tetrazzini will happen tomorrow night. I like Tin Eats. I'm making Asian Chiili Garlic Prawns tonight. www.recipetineats.com/asian-chilli-garlic-prawns-shrimp/The recipe calls for WAY too much sriracha so I had to tweak. Now, that was DAMN good!

I put some left over chicken out for the kitty and I saw it eating. It's a pretty thing. Don't really want another cat but if I can catch it later will take it to the humane shelter. Hubs may have a fit, LOL, but I may fix it a bed on the porch. I think we have a retired local vet that takes care of the animals there. That's wonderful if he does. I just had to run to the store to get dry cat food for the ferals. I have leftover chicken and pork, but can't leave it out because it will freeze immediately. The dry stuff will have to do.

The honey they use for treating bedsores isn't the stuff that you buy although maybe that has some effectiveness. What the wound specialist used on DH was "medical grade" honey and came in a tube like ointment. Then the wound is covered. Bedsores are really difficult to get rid of. I am not sure we ever completely got rid of DH's before he died. It wasn't large, though. On a different note, I just baked 10 dozen cookies . . . and didn't eat a single one. Before anyone is too impressed, these are the kind you break apart. We are having a speaker tomorrow from the Global Methodists group (in case you haven't heard, the United Methodists are splitting), and unknown to us, we have been put on their website as a place to go for information. A few may show up, or a lot may show up. That is true also of our congregation. I said I would "handle" the cookies back when I thought I could just go to Costco and get a container. The leftovers will go in the freezer and get pulled out for the United Methodist speaker who will be here at the end of the month. If there are none left, the rest of the committee will have to step up this time. Has anyone else noticed that there is a shortage of those pull-apart ones? I could only get chocolate chip and mm ones at my Walmart. I got the Macadamia nut ones at a different Walmart. And I could only find sugar cookies at a Publix other than the one I go to. Maybe it has to do with Valentine's Day? I did skip over the ones with Lucky Charm marshmallows in them! Well naturally, it has to medical grade honey. Pull apart cookies? Break apart cookies? You mean like fortune cookeis?

Hospitals have lots of bugs and if she's not eating well that won't help healing. Maybe if she had an electronic record set up you could poke around in there? I understand not wanting to bother Mister but maybe just say you don't want to disturb him/bother him but you do care and have heard about xyz. I actually slept 8 solid hours last night but everyone today is telling me I look tired. Grandma asked if I slept. She's mother hen to the end it seems. I’m glad you mentioned electronic records. This is the same hospital and healthcare system my bogus GI doctor works for. They do have electronic records. When I was finally able to set mine up, I saw things in my chart that nobody had ever bothered to tell me. I do try to limit what information or suggestions I offer Mister, and try to make sure it’s worth his attention before saying anything to him. But I think different methods of treating wounds like hers and specialists are worth mentioning to him, as long as it’s not some quacky type stuff. I’m glad you got some sleep. I am not surprised your Grandma expressed concern for you. Even when they are ill themselves, Mothers and Grandmothers tend to still try to be mother hens. I am praying for you and your family. Here's something that sounds quacky, but isn't. For smaller bedsores, honey is very effective for healing. Conclusion: By week 5, PUSH (pressure ulcer scale for healing) tool scores showed that healing among subjects using a honey dressing was approximately 4 times the rate of healing in the comparison group. The use of a honey dressing is effective and practical. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17413836/www.jprjournal.com/index.php/jpr/article/view/291

Mister said something about some kind of surgery they proposed to deal with the wound being infected again. Idk exactly what that involves.
What kind of wound is it? I think it started as a bed sore. It’s on her back. Mister says it got big enough to put his fist through it, and deep. Holy crap! Nobody should have a bedsore that huge! Did she get it at home or in the hospital? If she got it at the hospital, that's unforgivable. It indicates very poor nursing care.

Well, somebody finally managed to steal Mrs. T’s Jeep. Her sister is visiting and had just got back in around Midnight. Around 1:30 this morning she heard the Jeep start. She looked out the window, and saw them. The bastards came in a Black/dark car and parked it in OUR driveway. Not just at the beginning of our driveway, but they came down to the middle and walked across the grass to the T’s driveway. The only thing our cameras recorded was, the doorbell camera recorded them driving into the cove at 12:25, but the just drove around the cove and headed back out. The video stopped before I could see if they actually left. Exactly an hour later, Mrs. T’s Jeep backed out of their driveway, turned around in the cove, and the same car that had been in the cove an hour before, followed it. The camera on our porch should’ve recorded them coming in our driveway, but it didn’t. The doorbell didn’t even record them coming back into the cove the 2nd time, just them leaving. Whoever was driving it obviously wasn’t use to driving something like that. They kept jerking around, pressing the gas hard (I could hear it on the video) and then slamming on the brakes trying to get out the driveway and turn around in the cove. Mrs. T said she was tired of always being on high alert when she drove it, but it still makes me angry that she couldn’t even enjoy her vehicle for fear of being carjacked and that people kept trying to steal it. And it makes everybody angry that they were so bold as to park in our driveway while they stole it. Last time, they parked in front of our house, but to actually drive down our driveway?! They had one of those boxes to unlock it and start it. You don’t even have to make any noise breaking a window. If it’s that easy to steal a car that has push to start, I’m glad my car and my Wrangler don’t have it. Anyway, I hope that’s the end of thieves coming around our houses trying to steal her vehicle. Mr. T has a Challenger SRT, which thieves are attracted to also, but I hope nobody decides to come try to get that one too. Did she have an anti-theft bar on her steering wheel? Sometimes the old solutions are best.

Our semi-feral cat sneezed in my face when I let her in to warm up last night, and it is one of the grossest things I have ever smelled. I'm gagging now just thinking about it. She has allergy issues sometimes, but this is likely a cold. We have had to take her to the vet for sinus infections a couple of times - hoping this isn't one of those times. Vet said to give her our OTC allergy meds when needed. She takes them pretty easily. I've heard a lot of people talk about dehydration being an issue with cats. I guess we got a weirdo, because she runs for water over food. She drinks water ALL day long. It shouldn't smell gross. Sounds like an infection of some kind.

Still minus 40 out, and will be colder tonight. It should ease up by the beginning of next week. It should ease up, to what, a balmy -37°? Dang! I hope you are out shopping for a new bathing suit! 😉 Gotta take advantage of those warm days! Hahaha. Just kidding with you. That's freaking cold! I bet your coffee could freeze, if you were pouring it, while outside, in those temps. That's too cold for me! Well, this is what happens when you throw boiling hot tea in this weather. It turns to ice before it hits the ground. It's called the Mpemba Effect.

Yes, loud. I kept thinking 'What the hell IS that?' It wasn't the massive snow removal trucks. The temp dropped from zero to about minus 35 in a matter of hours. By midnight, the bedrock was cracking. "Boom!, Boom!' Wow. That's crazy! And oh, so very cold! Dang! I hope you don't have to go out for anything and that nothing goes wrong for you, so you are able to stay warm through this extra cold weather. I also hope it warms up, at least a little, soon! That is too damn cold! I'll be thinking of you. I'm not going anywhere. It's bitter out and I'm cuddling with a warm cat. I'm glad I no longer have a car with a frozen battery. Salt on the roads doesn't work when it's this cold, so lots of accidents on black ice that was salted.

OMG! I just saw an article (but didn't read it), on KSL News that said, somewhere in Utah, the temp reached -64°F! It's all just too crazy! Have the sounds you been hearing, been loud? So weird/incredible. Yes, loud. I kept thinking 'What the hell IS that?' It wasn't the massive snow removal trucks. The temp dropped from zero to about minus 35 in a matter of hours. Well, crap! It's going to hit MINUS 45 this weekend. We're going to have a lot of dead animals. I feel so bad for them. Police and medics are mobilized to get all the homeless off the streets. There's room for everyone. Some won't want to go and will freeze to death.

alright, I know it's a random weekday...but my house smells fantastic right now. turkey probably has another 20min, the pan of stuffing went in a little while ago. I think I might need to make this a thing a little more often than just T-day. haha. I'm apparently one of those weirdos that actually likes turkey. I LOVE turkey, but can never find one small enough. I used to buy small turkeys for $10, not that long ago. They no longer exist.

It's going down to minus 40C later this afternoon. That's minus 40F, too.
Maybe that's what Fred la Marmotte was trying to say. We're all going to freeze to death.

Here’s hoping a puppy picture might make some of you smile a little. He’s resting on their sofa after terrorizing me all day. He’ll be 7 months in a couple of weeks. ETA: I put his jacket on the first time he went outside this morning. Once again, he doesn’t want me to take it off. Sigh. The jacket is working like a Thundershirt. The idea behind the ThunderShirt is that it works on the same principle as swaddling a baby or using a weighted blanket. The pressure applied reduces stress by calming the autonomic nervous system which is responsible for the ‘fight or flight’ response. vethelpdirect.com/vetblog/2022/09/21/do-thundershirts-work-for-dogs/#:~:text=The%20idea%20behind%20the%20ThunderShirt,'fight%20or%20flight'%20response.

I didn’t know that about the protein shakes. Thank you for the information, it made me wonder if there is a more palatable option for meal replacements. I know my Grandmother use to give my Great Grandmother Ensure. I'd rather cut my own throat than drink Ensure. One of my BFFs is in charge of letting the staff know I WILL NOT DRINK IT. It's absolutely vile. I wanted to puke every time I had to open a can for my patienta.
