A friend said it's not a slip up but a pattern now.
Not a very nice friend Artemis Windsong . The principle of keto (or ANY diet) is that even if you go off, you can just get right back on. You deserve better friends.

I used to look for her advice on what to eat when I hadn't researched the restaurant. Yes, guilty for not getting back on track when I can.

Now 14K (31 lbs) down. Just one 1K from my goal weight! To be clear, I'll still be 4k/8.8 lbs overweight, but I'm fine with that. I will still have a belly but it's MUCH smaller.
I have started "cheating" a TINY bit. I had carrots at the school cantine on Mon, I bought a salad that had a tiny bit of apple in it on Tuesday, and a salad that had a few raisins in it today. So far I'm still losing weight.

That seems reasonable as a low carb diet, but what I have read of and discussed with a nutritionist and doctor about keto is that to truly do the diet you have to get 70% of your diet from fat. Too much protein and your body converts those to carbs negating the goal of ketosis.
Originally I thought we could do a similar thing and dh and the kids could just add to the main meal with rice or potatoes. But none of our staples are high enough in fat.
raeoflyte I have been rereading this thread, and I'm a lot more knowledgeable now. Protein is a goal, you should aim to hit it and not go over. But both carbs and fats are a LIMIT. So eating less fat is NOT a problem. The only aim of the fat is to keep you satiated.

That is very different than the keto diet I've been exposed to. Do you use ketone strips to check if you're in ketosis?

No, I can tell by my breath and by the smell of my sweat. The hard-core keto-ers on Reddit say the ketone strips "don't work anyway".
I'm still losing, and I'm not hungry. Today I had 2 bites of my salad and two spoonfuls of my (low-carb) dessert, wasn't hungry, and gave them to a colleague. So I'm guessing I'm still in keto.

ETA: The point of the fat is not to feel hungry ... if you don't eat carbs and you don't eat fat, you will feel hungry.
I have never signed up for reddit, and I don't post there, but I found their keto explanations EXTREMELY helpful. Same with DietDoctor.
PS All I can tell you is that it is been working for me, making carbs for the (adult) kids (when they come, in my case, since mine are all older and don't live here FT anymore), and eating the exact same meal as them except for the rice/potatoes/pasta/bread.
Last night DD (who just moved into an apt with her BF) invited DH and I for dinner to see her new apt. She knows I'm on this diet, so she bought a rotisserie chicken, a bag of rocket, some great cheese, and a fresh loaf of bread.
I ate WAY more than I usually do at night, and I ate everything except the bread.
Same weight this morning (but I lost a kilo / 2.2 lbs earlier this week).

But you are right that too much protein converts, so you shouldn't go over the protein.
ETA: My friend M who was here a few weeks ago is a GP ... HE was asking ME about keto. I think most people (even docs) don't know much about it.
Calories in/calories out still applies, even on keto. That's just thermodynamics.
But keto definitely makes you less hungry/hangry, because of cutting sugars.
One thing I see a lot of Reddit is people trying desperately to hit their "fat goal", and not losing weight. That's because the fat is a LIMIT, and not a goal.

Since I live in France I use a metric BMI calculator. I found this quiz extremely edifying.

I've continued on keto, with the very occasional "cheat" when we go out. I finally hit my stretch goal today ... 15 kilos (33 lbs). BMI at 26. (High normal is 24.9.)
I'm still slightly overweight (2.6 kilos/5.7 lbs) but I can live with that. I'm planning to switch to low-carb at this point (rather than keto), ie under 50 grams of carbs/day instead of under 20 grams of carbs/day. I think.
Part of me is setting a new stretch goal, but I'm really struggling with life these days, so I know it would be much better for me to be less strict.
How are you all doing?

We've gone out more than usual lately (2 dinners out with friends two weeks ago, and DS3 is here for the long 4-day weekend here so we went out twice this weekend.) I haven't gained any weight (I'm really pleased about that!) but I haven't lost any more either.
I guess this is what "maintenance" looks like?! Even though it's only been a couple of weeks.
So after this two-week "break" from being VERY strict for over 4 months, I've decided to go for my next stretch goal, normal BMI (another 2.6 kilos/5.7 lbs, and ideally a bit more).
I would love to hear how you guys are doing! ETA: After being teased at work (not unkindly!) I finally bought three new pairs of pants last week, 1 size smaller. I was disappointed, I was hoping for 2 sizes smaller. But I still have a belly. I'd like to lose it so I can go down another size. Even my new pants are too big, but much less so than the old ones LOL.

I hit 16 kilos (35 lbs) today. To celebrate, I bought a bag of 8 mini whole wheat bread rolls that are just 10g of carbs/roll. I had one with my salad today, and put the rest in the freezer.
Just 1.8 more kilos (4 lbs) to go to hit "normal" weight/BMI. Then of course I'll probably want to give myself a bit of leeway LOL.
ETA: I read a comment on Reddit Keto today that really resonated with me. For people with addictive personalities (like me) it's REALLY hard to find a balance.

I'm still holding at minus 13 for the year. However, not only are you are an inspiration, but proof low carb/keto works.

13 pounds is fantastic Iggy aka IG ! Yes, It really does! At the beginning I thought there was something magical about it, then as I learned more, I learned it is just a way to help you regulate calories, because low carb/keto REALLY suppresses your appetite. So agreed, it really works!!! I used to get very "hangry". I haven't gotten "hangry" since I started keto.
I remember being SO THRILLED to find those low-carb breakfast bars at the supermarket at the mall (15 min away), and planning to go back last week (my fall break) for more. I didn't even need to, I still have a few left!

Down 16.9 kilos/37.2 lbs. Than than 1K/2.2 lbs from "normal" weight/BMI!
I am bumping this thread because I mentioned it on the 2019 goals thread, because several YMers mentioned wanting to eat more healthily and/or lose weight.
The more the merrier.

Great job debthaven and Iggy aka IG!!
Just an FYI, since I just found this out last week. If you use the artificial sweetener packets (Equal, Sweet and Low, etc.) be aware they have no calories but do have carbs. 0.9g per packet to be exact. I have a new addiction to Starbucks cold brews, and unlike hot coffee, which I love as black as my little soul, cold coffee has to be SWEET for me. We're talking about 16 packets of Equal sweet. That's almost 15g of carbs I didn't realize I was taking in. Use the little squeeze bottles instead. They don't have the fillers, so they are actually zero carb.

Thanks, flutterby. It's a PITA, especially in middle age. Re: sweeteners, I'm a Splenda person. I use one per cup of coffee, once a day. Yes, we must be mindful of hidden carbs! But seriously, if anyone is having problems with heartburn, IBS, or other digestive issues, look into low carb. Removing sugar, flour, corn, wheat, etc. has made a HUGE difference in my life.

I just made an appt with a nutritionist. It seems a bit counterintuitive to do that now that I'm only 2-3 kilos from my goal weight. But I've been less strict recently, and I've been gaining and losing the same kilo over and over for 3 weeks.
I spoke to a friend who lost 10 kilos with a nutritionist. She convinced me to see one, to know when/how to move off keto towards a way of eating that is more sustainable for me long-term. (Hers sounds great but I prefer to see somebody local.)
These days I can't decide if I'm "cheating" or if I'm now "low-carb" instead of "strict keto", so I think it will be helpful. I'm excited. PS I bought two pairs of skinny jeans today, the equivalent of US size 8! I was a size 12 when I started (and the 12s had gotten really tight).

Same here Iggy aka IG ! I used to have stomachaches ALL THE TIME!!! I still plan to reintroduce corn, flour, wheat back into my diet, but in MUCH smaller quantities than before. The Standard American Diet is 250-300 g of carbs/day. Keto is 20 g/day. I'll see what the nutritionist says, but my guess is that I will go low-carb, so maybe 75 g max/day, and not every day. But I DO want to be able to eat a hamburger (with the bun) or pizza or or rice or a sweet potato or a piece of cake occasionally. Keto is too restrictive, long term (for me at least).
There is NO way I've worked this hard for 5 months to put it all back on, but I do want to lose enough to give myself a bit of leeway. I've been bouncing between 63 and 64 kilos for weeks. The high end of "normal" weight for me (5'2") is 62 kilos. I'd like to get down to 60 kilos.

So, saw the nutritionist today. I liked her.
She asked me, well, do you WANT to do keto for the rest of your life? Because I have patients who do, although personally I think it's extreme. She said, I don't like the idea of NEVER eating potatoes, rice, grains, bread, root vegetables, or any fruit but berries. I said no I DON'T, that's why I here, because I need help with what comes next.
She was very knowledgeable about it. She even told me "Carrots and apples are not the enemy" LOL. She said to be careful with bananas and grapes but to eat any other fruit, and any vegetable, although she recommended pairing root veggies with green veggies. So she was very knowledgeable about keto, which I had been worried about.
Long story short, she told me I should use what I've learned during these 5 months on Keto to start eating more varied meals, and to eat whatever I want, OCCASIONALLY and in SMALL quantities. She said try to eat your carbs at lunch rather than dinner, but don't make yourself crazy if you're invited out to dinner or at a restaurant. She said learn to eat what you want in small quantities, and compensate the next day. She said to try to see things in terms of a week rather than a day or two.
She said I was welcome to come back but that if I do, NOT to come back before 15 Jan (because of the holidays). She also prescribed a blood test. She said no rush but she always does that for new patients/people who do keto longer-term (because of possible kidney damage). It's a fasting blood test so I'll do it when I'm on a reduced schedule in Dec. She also told me not to weigh myself every day but frankly that is NOT going to happen. I DO plan to go back in mid/late January. She also said (like raeoflyte did) that there is nothing wrong with taking a break, stabilizing, and losing a bit more later. (She knows I would like to lose another 3 kilos/6.5 lbs and doesn't disagree because I still have a belly and belly fat is not healthy.) So in sum, she told me to go low-carb rather than keto. She didn't tell me anything I didn't know, but for some reason, I needed to hear it from a professional. I'm very glad I went.

Sounds like a good visit. My doctors office does full blood panels every 6 months for people to adhere to keto since there isn't data on the long term effects yet.

raeoflyte yes it was a good visit! Plus she is a local GP and although we are still all officially registered with another GP, he has been very ill for a long while (well over a year). So this was also a good way to check out what I'm guessing will be our next family GP. I had a colonoscopy in early June, before I started keto (family history). So I have the blood work from June, and I plan to go to the same lab. That way she can compare the blood work.
So I guess I'm officially moving to low-carb rather than keto. So Iggy aka IG count me in on the low-carb team!
