Hi! I’m 200g/day carb person, and in the last three years, it’s become a problem. I don’t know if it has to do with passing age 35, but I’m now the heaviest I’ve ever weighed including my second pregnancy. Eating, for me, is far more emotional than it should be.
My main focus has been calorie restriction, as fluttery mentioned. I can’t emotionally maintain it though. :/
My sister moved to Ecuador a few years ago, and she was shocked at how little processed/carb loaded food they have their. It was a big adjustment for her. She’s maintained her weight far better than I have and we’re the exact same body type.
My SIL has been doing the keto diet this calendar year, and it’s worked well for her. I think she’s transitioned to about 40-60g/day of carbs. She’s l, at my untrained eye, probably down 30 pounds.
I’m done with vacations for the summer now, and I need to refocus on both calorie and carb restriction.
I agree that it’s a lifestyle change and not a diet. However, I don’t agree that exercising is the forefront of weight loss.

I did the LC for nearly 1.5 years. The big thing was to quit bread. I learned how to make flax meal bread which is super easy. A LC mug muffin can be made into a lot of different bread substitutes including pancakes.
My downfall was I injured my back in February and was in pain for 2 months. I quit the LC because it was too much trouble. My bad was I was emotionally eating and did put on weight. Also, my exercise was completely gone. The biggy is electrolytes. Drink pickle juice daily.
The allowed fruits are black berries, raspberries and blueberries in moderation. The LC HF FB page I was on wanted just 1000 calories a day. Not workable for me. They have a magnesium MALATE 400 mg. to keep the elimination system going. Tracking all food on sites like myfitnesspal.com.
Bullet proof coffee is recommended by many LCers for breakfast. Coffee, coconut oil and butter. H. made me quit that when I broke my wrist a year ago June and he was going the cooking.
Quest snack bars are low carb, high protein and filling. Premier Protein drink has 30 grams of protein. Not totally low carb but I like a chicken salad filled with avacado, pickle, onion, cucumber, nuts, mayo. Many times I make mayo based coleslaw and mix those ingredients in for the 2nd day. This is not allowed on the LCHF FB page I am on because they contain wheat. Santa Fe Tortilla Company 5 net grams protein for tortilla wraps. These can be used for sandwiches and pizzas. I hope responding here will get me going on the program again. I do need to be on moderate carbs. If this will help your illness, then do it. Best wishes!

In the French version you're allowed 2 glasses of red or white wine per day. Which works for me, I hate beer ("liquid bread"). From what I have read there are different degrees of ketosis. If I'm going to do this long-term, frankly I don't really care if I'm at "maximum ketosis" all the time. For me I have to find a way to do it medium term (and then reduce carbs long-term, of course). Unfortunately I can tell by my metallic breath that I'm still in ketosis, even those two tiny bowls of rice.
speaking of france and bread - what is the gluten free situation in paris? is it a thing, not a thing, is the good gf french bread?

I'm actually in the process of moving myself and my son to a ketogenic diet. There is lots of proof out there that it helps neurological problems. I don't have any grand illusions of never eating carbs or sugar again, but I do think eliminating as much as possible is a great idea for many health reasons. I have an idea of what I think might actually be causing all of his daily paralysis, and if so, a diet low in carbs and sugar is one of the most important things he must do to avoid having a heart attack. (It's called thyrotoxic periodic paralysis and he has the tumor that can cause it. Now to get the doctors to listen and test for it...) The ketogenic diet was created for those with epilepsy (before the pharmacotherapy existed) so I hope it helps your son!

I started a keto (very low carb) diet three weeks ago because my rheumatologist insisted I lose weight (I have osteoarthritis in my right hip). She said I had to do it for 4 weeks but she hopes I'll see results and be motivated to continue. I do plan to continue past the 4 weeks, but I'm trying to decide how long.
She is a rheumatologist, not a nutritionist, so I have no plans to see her in the near future. DH has an appt next week and I may tag along. (She is also a friend, but not a close one.)
I am generally NOT very self-disciplined, but amazingly, I've really been sticking to it. Unfortunately I don't know how much weight I have lost because our scale was broken and I only replaced it last week.
If you did this diet, did it work? Is it for life (Gd forbid!) Did you cheat? Did you gain back all the weight once you stopped? Most of all, how long did you do it for, and what did you do afterwards? Frankly I am NOT interested in a life with NO pasta/bread/rice/potatos/root vegetables/ice cream/FRUIT.
I have ordered low-carb bread and muesli online but I'm still waiting for it. The stores here don't carry that sort of thing. So far I have cheated twice (once a week in the first 2 weeks). Both times I ate a small bowl of rice at a Chinese restaurant (French portions). I decided it's OK to cheat once/week if it keeps me on track.
Any advice/info/suggestions? I know there are plenty of resources on the web but I wanted to ask my imaginary friends.
From my reading, I think I want to "graduate" to the Atkins 40 after about 6 weeks.
ETA: I'm tagging flutterby because I know she does it sometimes, but I think she never has much weight to lose. I would like to lose about 30 pounds. I *think* I've lost about 9 so far. I did it, for about month. Several times, Yes, it works. Big time. However, with this diet you CAN'T cheat. The goal is to make your body go into ketosis and that takes about 3 days. Then your body starts burning fat like crazy. If you have a bowl of rice, you're back to zero and have to start all over again. Be careful with hidden sugar, like in milk. Lactose is a sugar. Oddly, enough, you can drink liquor, but not beer. Your body metabolizes alcohol differently. It used to be called "The Drinking Man's Diet" It's great for a quick weight loss for a special occasion, but I couldn't do it much longer than that. It made me feel unwell.Plus, I'm a bread junkie. I would not want to do any diet that made me feel unwell - unless it was a temporary, detox thing. I used to do a lot of fasting when I was younger, but I don't have that wherewithall currently. Maybe now I'm done with school I can think about it. I like a eating plan that makes me feel fantastic (aside from being hungry here and there or cravings, etc). I get that from doing raw food or fasting. With detox - I've come to think that if you are having detox systems that are more than very mild, you are doing something wrong. So when trying to change, I will do things slowly. remove something, add something, over several weeks. My focus is on raw foods - fresh and frozen fruits, salads with soaked/sprouted seeds, lots of fresh chopped herbs and alfalfa, clover and other leafy sprouts. I do homemade dressings with cold pressed olive oil and raw ACV. I evaluate the adequacy of any dietary practice by my complexion, energy level, and mood. Lots of time on a raw food spree or fast I was just filled with joy - the energy of the universe coursing through me - one with the cosmos - kind of feeling. My cheeks looked like there was a light shining in them. Gee - after remembering this - after this work trip - I think I'm going to go back to raw! I did gain some weight during school but I was doing very heavy raw to get through the last semester and was feeling/looking better, but I've slipped lately.... My downfalls are rice and tofu, sometimes potatoes. Unfortunately - I gotten to the cooking ability of making restaurant quality stir fries and curries (chinese and thai dishes), and then I have them every night. One last note on raw food: I know it works, but I don't know why - I don't think anyone does know why - and there is so much bad information, cult-like thinking about raw on the internet that I really hesitate to discuss it much, either online or in person. but filling your plate with fresh fruits and loads of salad with sprouts and freshly made pates with soaked/sprouted nuts and seeds is always a healthy choice. I've gone months on only raw foods and felt fantastic, with great skin and loads of energy and joyful feelings. I've given up thinking I can do it all the time forever (old habits, socializing, etc) but it is something I will always go back to just because it feels so great when you get into it.

Thanks again for the comments and the ideas!
@rockhounder I really hope the diet helps your son.
Rukh O'Rorke , all I can tell you is there are a lot more gluten-free options now than 10 years ago when DD was seeing a guy who is gluten intolerant. I don't think any of the traditional bakeries do GF but I could be wrong. But I'm sure the US and UK are far ahead compared to here. There were ZERO GF products in the supermarkets in those days, now there are some. Back then I had to go to a health food store to get him GF bread and pasta. They were both vile.
M&S has a GF range, and there are quite a few M&S Food stores here now. ETA: M&S is a UK supermarket (and department store) chain.

thanks debt! I was hoping they were perfecting it . Maybe some day. here too many more (and much improved!) options. Sadly - there is a vegan pizzeria with super good reviews, but they gave up doing gf crusts....

I have not tried the Keto diet but have a friend who is currently giving it a go and is about 4 weeks in. I don't know how faithful she is to it, she does love her pizza and other "junk" food. ODS has a friend who has been eating Paleo for the past 3 or 4 years, lost 100 pounds, and looks fabulous. As for me, I can no longer eat bread/pizza/pasta the way I could when I was younger. Foods heavy on white flour/gluten leave me lethargic and bloated and still hungry. I haven't done anything about it other than to be conscious about how much of those types of foods I eat, but I certainly feel better when I go even just a day or two without them. I generally eat far more than my recommended 5 servings of fruit and vegetables per day and I am very fond of protein. That may be as far as I am willing to go -- I can't see myself giving up fruit even if most of it is loaded with carbs. I need my vitamins and fiber.

I know we change rules around nutrition every 15 years or so, but I just refuse to believe that people are ballooning up to obesity by eating apples and plums. I have heard the argument that apples are sweeter than they were years ago - but really - eat a peach or a handful of cherries. I can't believe that we are in a world where 5 pieces of bacon is encouraged, but apples will kill you. No!

Hi! I’m 200g/day carb person, and in the last three years, it’s become a problem. I don’t know if it has to do with passing age 35, but I’m now the heaviest I’ve ever weighed including my second pregnancy. Eating, for me, is far more emotional than it should be. I can’t emotionally maintain it though. :/ My sister moved to Ecuador a few years ago, and she was shocked at how little processed/carb loaded food they have their. It was a big adjustment for her. She’s maintained her weight far better than I have and we’re the exact same body type. My SIL has been doing the keto diet this calendar year, and it’s worked well for her. However, I don’t agree that exercising is the forefront of weight loss. I agree - you can't out-exercise a bad diet - believe me. I run and run and run, but unless I switch my eating, my weight stays the same and I stay "skinny-fat." I agree.
More importantly, I think that exercise should be separated from dieting and weight loss and just become a habit like brushing your teeth. There will be periods of time when your weight is up due to your eating outpacing your exercise. Often, people become disheartened and unmotivated if their weight creeps up or their nutrition has degraded. So not only are they struggling with all that but they stop exercising as they see such a strong link and if there isn't any progress being made....well....the whole effort slows down. I suggest that the exercise element of one's life be separate. Habitual and maybe disconnected from weight loss, maintenance....at least until it is a sustainable habit. Something you'll continue to do without regard to the number on the scale or the amount of ice cream you've eaten lately.

Diet?...….Just.... Don't eat.....drink lots of coffee....BLACK....eventually, the weight will drop. When you hit your desired spot.....eat again. Unless, of course, you drop dead first But, what the heck...food eventually will be fatal anyway

I think exercise is good to help with weight maintenance after the weight has been mostly lost, but is a small part of weight loss overall, especially when there is a lot of weight to lose. It's not going to hurt to exercise, but agree with skubikky, and needs to become a habit. I need to get into this habit myself.

I should try the low carb thing because I have epilepsy and have heard it can help. But I get evil when I don't have carbs. I may not have seizures but no one will want to be around me I'm so mean!

When I lost my 150 pounds over two years, I did it nearly 100% through exercise. When I was rockhounding and hiking 3-4 days a week and carrying around 50-80 pound packs of rocks, I could eat whatever I wanted.
As a bonus, making my body work so much encouraged me to eat more cleanly because it gave me more enegery to hike longer and farther.

My nearly 40 pound weight loss five years ago was through regular exercise and watching the calories/foods I ate. Nothing outlandish, just making a concerted effort to take better care of myself. Watching what I eat will just help me maintain, exercise does all the work.

I would suggest doing low <10 to moderate 20-60 carbs. That might be enough to keep you from being mean. I was shocked at what had carbs. Taco seasoning for 1/4 teaspoon has 4 carbs. I switched to chili powder. Paying attention and doing small adjustments can lower your carb count.
For me, french fries. Low carber shun potatoes of all kinds. I really like Kielbassa beef sausage and chicken sausages. LC. Checking out the carb count for foods then make the LC choice.

2 years ago when I started LCHF, I eased into it by eliminating foods. First week was bread, 2nd week diet sodas, 3rd week sugar like candy or ice cream, 4th week chips.
All the while looking at carbs for all foods.

DH had an appt with our rheumatologist today, the one who put me on a diet 4 weeks ago. I had hoped to go with him but I couldn't. So I told DH, tell C I lost nearly 5 kilos. He told her I lost 1 kilo. I was furious!
So I texted her, DH got it wrong, I've lost nearly 5 kilos, not 1 kilo. She texted me back WOOOOW, not the same thing AT ALL, with a ton of happy emojis. It made me feel so good LOL. Ten days later, the low-carb bread hadn't arrived. Last week I emailed the site, the email bounced back. I tried another email, it bounced back too. So I told DH, well, it looks like I got scammed. Then my phone rang ... it was the manager. Apparently my package had gotten lost. He tracked it down, and as a sales gesture, he resent an identical order himself, with additional low-carb "gifts" I hadn't ordered.
So now I have 4 (small) loaves of low-carb bread and 2 boxes of low-carb cereal LOL.

As little as possible. Goofed and had some celery with peanut butter. But not much. No bread of any sort at all. No popcorn either.

Celery and peanut butter is fine zibazinski ! I hate celery but I have peanut butter on the low-carb bread for either breakfast or lunch. And I put a few peanuts in my (plain) Greek yoghurt for the crunch. Just make sure your peanut butter doesn't have added sugar. I told my sister, I've lost 5 kilos on this diet, but I keep reading about people who lose 5 kilos in one week, not one month, and I don't get it. My sister said, don't be stupid, stop complaining ... when was the last time you lost 5 kilos?! LOL

Of all the stuff I've read (and I've read a LOT) this is the one single thing I've found most helpful. I took a screenshot and printed it out. I keep a copy on my fridge and a copy in my bag.
For every category, the left side is low-carb, the right side is high-carb.
