My blood sugar numbers are high enough to trigger a Diabetes Type 2 diagnosis. I have to go low carb to get my numbers down and based on the information I was given and my own research I will need to be low carb for life. One interesting thing is that our bodies do need carbs for energy and I am following an eating plan where for breakfast half my plate is protein and half is carbs (still need to avoid refined sugars but fruit and a whole grain is fine), lunch is half vegetables, quarter protein and quarter carbs (includes fruit and whole grains) Dinner is 3/4 veggies and 1/4 protein no carbs since I don't need energy at the end of the day. I'm still figuring out what I like to eat and what I won't but it will need to be sustainable for the rest of my life. Hopefully weight will go down but really I need the blood sugar go down to ease the strain on my liver. Good luck on your journey!

engineerdoe my hairdresser did that same diet. It was recommended by one of her customers who is a nutritionist. My hairdresser lost a lot of weight (20 kilos/44 lbs) in a year. She has kept it off for 2 years. I'm considering transitioning to this diet when I hit my next goal. Psychologically the keto was good for me because it is relatively quick (10.7 kilos/25.6 lbs in 11 weeks). I needed to see quick results, and I was either on a reduced schedule or off for the summer so I could make it a priority. Some people do keto for life, but I'm not one of them.
Good luck! I hope you post your progress here! I think blood sugar and weight go together. I read the Reddit Keto boards for inspiration. Many people go on that diet because of their blood sugar, and as they lose weight, their numbers improve. I'm also planning to continue on the low-carb bread for as long as I can find it. My lunch sandwich (two days a week) is only 8 carbs! The small ready-meals I used to buy are about 50 carbs. (I checked.) This weekend I'm planning to have pizza bread (made with the LC bread) one day, and French toast (ditto) another day. (I ordered low-carb maple syrup on Amazon LOL.). This bread allows me to have more variety while still keeping carbs low. I NEVER have more than 2 slices per day. Maybe try different LC breads until you find one you like? Because even whole wheat breads are very high in carbs. You're lucky that in the US you can find a lot of LC products. We're hoping to visit DS3 in Brussels in Oct. If we do, I'm planning to stock up again!
ETA: Just to be clear, I'm absolutely NOT advising you to go on keto! I read those keto posts on Reddit because that's the diet I'm doing and they help keep me motivated. There are many ways to lose weight. I wish you the best!

debthaven I am not a big bread eater, I prefer pasta and rice so for me I switch out the rice with quinoa (whole grain with a lot of fiber) or riced cauliflower. Whole wheat breads are high in carbs but if they are actually made with whole grains they have a lot of fiber carbs that are better than sugar carbs. I am interested in looking into some Keto recipes to try. I am trying to keep my carb intake to 30 grams a meal or based on my plan 60 grams for the whole day. One thing I have learned with my research is that when they drop carbs in a prepared food, they add fat and when they drop fat, they add carbs.
My biggest obstacle is my inate laziness (hate to cook and exercise) and my fondness for soda and pasta. No zoodles won't always cut it for me. I am interested in trying the pasta made from chick peas. Good luck to you as well!

engineerdoe zoodles don't cut it for me either LOL. I am not a big pasta fan except in Asian food. I have never heard of pasta made from chick peas, I doubt it's available here but I'll look.
Per your carb intake, remember that some veggies and fruits have a lot more carbs than others. If you google "diet doctor visual guides" they have great visuals of every food group, with low carb on the left and high carb on the right. For example, I was so proud of eating JUST a banana as my one fruit of the day, until I realized it had more carbs than my daily allowance. Root veggies (my favorites) are much higher in carbs than leaf veggies that grow above ground (radishes are the exception).
When I started this diet I did a screen shot with all the visual guides, printed out two copies, put one on my fridge and one in my handbag. By now I know what's LC and what's not, but it was a HUGE help in the beginning! I think you'll find it useful, even if you're not doing a keto diet (because that IS a keto site). I find them really handy! I also don't have much of a sweet tooth (except for ice cream!) so know that olives, (some) nuts, pickles are all LC (as long as there's no added sugar).
Also, some people track their carbs/calories online, or on apps ... I am much lazy for that LOL.

debthaven Yes bananas and raisins are pure sugar. Luckily I hate bananas. I do like raisins but I won't miss them. I do love potatoes so that is another I will miss dearly but I do like mashed cauliflower so I will be able to cope. Corn and peas are another that are more starchy carbs like potatoes and giving up peas is going to be hard for me. Corn is good but I can do without. I have an app that syncs with my blood sugar meter and I can track what I eat with my readings. I even did some tests of eating foods I normally would and than do my test two hours later to see what it did to my sugars. Spoiler! It was bad. But I also found out I can eat 6 chicken mcnuggets and a kids size fries and the little bag of apple slices from a happy meal and my numbers were not too bad. Eating just a few fries is fine as I know in my head that I don't need to eat all of the medium size fries but I do anyway cause "you have to clean your plate". I always tell people that I am not a sweet person in every context of that statement. I would much prefer potato chips to candy/chocolate. I need to be careful of my sodium intake but I love olives and pickles too. Moderation is the name of the game and knowing what certain foods are going to do to my levels helps me make better decisions.

I finally hit 10 kilos (nearly 11!) today!
I'm so happy that I have decided to keep going. But I'll allow myself to be a little more flexibile in social situations (while doing my best to avoid them). DH wanted to take me out for an Egg McMuffin this morning (I love them) and I said no thanks. Also this is probably not the best habit in the world, but I switched from wine to gin (with Tonic Zero) a couple of days ago ... zero carbs . Congrats ...nothing wrong with gin either

Have one lower-carb fruit per day zibazinski (berries, melon, plum, peach). ETA: In every food group, left is lower carb, right is higher carb. If you click on each one you get more info.

So this was an interesting conversation. I texted my rheumatologist, who put me on this diet in June because of my hip issues. She is a friend, but not a close friend. I asked her if she thought it would be OK for me to transition from 20 to 50 carbs/day at this point, after nearly 3 months. She texted back, OMG, I NEVER told you to do just 20 carbs/day! Look at the sheet I gave you, I'm sure I told you 50g! She said LOL, no wonder you've lost 11 kilos! You should definitely go up to 50g at this point. I looked at the sheet she gave me ... indeed it says 50g! How did I miss that?! I'm very glad I did though! I've decided to keep going on 20 carbs/day till my 3-month keto anniversary on Sept 17, and then transition to 40g. I'm going to look into the Atkins 40 diet.
I want to lose another 5 kilos (11 lbs) but at this point I don't care if it happens more slowly.

A lot of the keto sites go off of net carbs so 50 total carbs, and 20-35 net carbs (but any issues and they want you to lower your total down to the 20-35) I'm guessing that you ended up switching it to 20 total carbs because they don't usually spell out if they're using net or total.

raeoflyte we discussed this when she put me on the diet, she explained net carbs, so I am sure she means net carbs. She told me I needed to start reintroducing one slice of whole-grain bread for breakfast (not gonna happen) and reintroduce complex carbs 3X/week. That's CLEARLY not 20 net carbs/day.
This said, she's SUPER SUPER skinny so I don't think she realizes that what she advised me would put me over even 50 net carbs/day (unless she's looking at the average of a weekly total, in which case that's possible).
In any case, I have worked VERY hard to lose this weight, and I'm not planning on taking her advice to the letter and risk gaining it back. I AM, however, looking forward to being a BIT more relaxed/flexible, and eating small quantities of foods I haven't eaten for nearly 3 months 2X/week (but not 3X/week as she suggests).
My dream is to order a bowl of rice at a Chinese restaurant, and to have either a half-ear of corn or a half a sweet potato once a week. And ice cream LOL.
I've gone without ALL of those foods for 3 months, I'm not worried about rationing myself. I made LC pizza last Fri. It was VERY unsatisfying, but it scratched the itch for pizza.
That's one thing about this diet, it really does change your eating habits. If I eat those things occasionally, I'll be back on 20g/day the following day. It's a lifestyle change, for sure.

Down only 1 lb thus week...Dw 3lb...I did notice the scale was not accurate, giving different weight within 2 min. I changed the batteries now it seems to be fine. If you want a chocolate fix .......1 pkg of sugar free chocolate pudding mix, 2 cups of heavy whipping cream....hand mix with wisk until super thick....cool very good about 4 carbs per serving.

Sometimes it's SO frustrating to see your recipes, because we don't have low-carb ANYTHING here. (I live outside Paris). I've been looking for powdered Stevia for months, I finally found some this week.
But I don't understand, because although it's zero calories, it seems to have the same amount of carbs as sugar! How is that even possible?! The LC (fake) maple syrup I ordered on Amazon finally arrived, I had LC French toast with whipped cream and blueberries. It was delicious, but the LC (ie heavily seeded bread) just doesn't cut it for French toast, any more than the LC pizza dough resembles real pizza dough.
But both the pancake/French toast and the pizza "itches" got "scratched", so I guess that's something.
The rice with Chinese food itch has NOT gone away, nor has the ice-cream itch LOL.There are NO low-carb ice creams here, I even wrote to the companies to see if they were available here, and they're not (although they are in the UK, but good luck transporting that here LOL).
I know there are TONS of Keto recipes, but I find that the "imitations" are really not very satisfying, although I'm very grateful to have my LC bread for sandwiches (because it's the easiest thing to take for lunch twice a week).

Debthaven, Stevia is much sweeter than sugar. You should use much less. Also, much of the Stevia that is sold, is cut with sugar or binders, because it is very sweet. The plus on Stevia is its known to help good gut bacteria grow, so its much better for you than artificial sweetners. I would think Paris would have better options than the US, but you might want to look at various websites and order a few things. America can get very trendy food-wise. For example, since Paleo made Coconut oil and coconut is general popular, its hard to avoid in some of the less processed foods because many of the health food producers have joined the coconut bandwagon.

I'm not going for low carbs, but I am aiming for much less added sugars in my diet compared to the past. My hope is that might finally clear up my chronic sinus infection which is partially there simply because my sinuses and nasal passages aren't really optimal for sinus health.
Is this a good thread to ask about how to avoid added sugars and do substiutes? Or should I start a thread?

If you can, switch to Stevia if you need a sweetener. Premier Protein flavored shakes are substituted for creamers and are high in protein. For most everything else, just avoid foods with sugar in them. Low carb diet cuts sugar including most sugary fruits and vegetables that cause the body to react similar to sugar i.e. corn, potatoes, root veges of most kinds. Within reason, blueberries, black berries and raspberries are low sugar fruits. Some low carbers avoid milk sugars also.
I hope this helps.

Powder stevia is that the same as granular? I use oganic stevia. In the raw it is less than 1 carb per packet.

Mine shows <1 carb PER TEASPOON. I have zero idea what one cup would have. iHerb.com will ship internationally. Amazon? It would be high cost, I'm sure. Low carb ice cream can be made with whipped cream mixed with sugar free pudding then partially frozen or mix in a few tablespoons of vodka to keep it from freezing so solid. I didn't get the ratio of vodka for the recipe correct as yet. Yogurt partially frozen for ice cream substitute. I gave up pancakes, waffles, french toast years ago. I will eat carbed pancakes after I have been ill like with the flu. I use low carb tortillas for bread and a pizza base.
Good luck.

ednkris yes I should have said granular. How is it going? I've stalled again, still 11 kilos lost at exactly 3 months of dieting (first week not on keto). I can't manage to break 11 kilos. New weight loss goal is 13 kilos which would put me under 27 BMI. I know that's still overweight but at 58 I'd be fine with that, it's still a vast improvement. (I started at 32 BMI.)
I've been doing IF on the weekends but I can't manage IF the 4 days/week I teach. Those mornings I have a LC cereal bar (4 net carbs).
I used to have a blueberry muffin once a week at Job 1, and a freshly-baked croissant once a week at Job 2 (breakfast bars the other days). I really miss that blueberry muffin LOL.
I drink very little water ... would drinking more water help me lose weight?
I take a calcium/magnesium/potassium supplement because I used to get terrible foot/leg cramps during the night. I started those well before starting keto. I STILL get cramps (less often) so I don't want to stop taking them. I can't find any carb info on them.

Low carbers or people avoiding sugar, what it the preferred limit of added sugars a day for a post menopausal woman? And what do you snack on if you want to avoid eating too much protein, which is pretty hard on the kidneys?

Doing well, I weigh in on mondays...are you taking in ènough fats that is crucial for keto to work right. Water is also essential..got to flush out I used to get leg cramps too bad for years, I don't think I had 3 this past year. I try to drink 1/2 to 1 gal of water daily at 250 lb I need the gallon. I was / am a diabetic been off the meds now for 6 Mos A1 went from 7.4 to 5.2. Everyday is a struggle I love to devoure carbs

Regarding water intake: In the US, there are two guidelines that people follow 1)64 oz per day 2) #of ounces = to one-half of one’s weight in pounds per day
At the moment, my goal for water is 50 oz per day. It’s currently a reasonable goal for me, and I get overwhelmed by the two goals I listed above.

I’m just posting that dahlia because I’m tired of seeing my food journal pictures whenever I’m in Tapatalk.
Also, I had a doughnut eclair this morning and an ice cream sundae this afternoon. Shocking that I don’t lose weight.

I have been drinking more, thanks for the guidelines.
ednkris that's fantastic about getting off those meds! At 26 lbs lost now. I'm still doing under 20g of carbs. I do plan to go up to 50 eventually, but not yet.
