When my ex left me (25 years ago) I used to sing "One day, my prince will come!" Now I sing, "One day, my hamburger/pizza/popcorn/ice-cream/root vegetables will come!" Pasta and bread I can live without (except for the convenience).
Carbs were never even in my Weltanschauung before. I don't plan to give them up forever, but once I'm done with this phase, I will definitely be much stricter and more intelligent about them.
Long term, a life without hamburgers/pizza/popcorn/ice-cream/root vegetables is not worth living.

I can’t imagine living in a city with excellent boulangeries on every corner and not partaking. I think I ate my weight in baguettes, croissants, etc. the 2 weeks we were in France.

I’ve survived Day 2 and onto Day 3. I don’t think I’ll hit ketosis but one never knows. I’m sure I’ll lose weight so that was my goal. Plus not killing anyone due to no carbing.

Years ago, before I realized all my dietary restrictions, I did the low carb thing.
Now, I am lactose intolerant so, No cheese, No eggs, No butter, No ice cream and nothing with those things in them - ie. I don't eat chocolate or Cake either. I occasionally eat Kringle, but if I get carried away I end up with issues. I eat bread - I don't worry about milk, eggs butter it it - I just eat in moderation.
I also realized a few years ago that Corn does not agree with me at all. So, No Popcorn (I miss this the most I think), No Corn on the Cob (Miss that too), and nothing that might have corn oil- so I am now avoiding restaurant fries too. Also, No Corn Tortillas which are a staple in my house. I do occasionally eat Corn chips with salsa.
Despite not eating all that I still managed to be slightly overweight. I recently started exercising 3x per week. Exercise has always been part of my lifestyle until life got in the way a few years ago and I started having tendonitis issues in my elbows. I dropped a few pounds now - I weighed myself last night and the scale said I weigh 130. I think that is wrong by about 5 lbs. I am going to try to drop another 5 lbs or so.
We try to eat healthy foods, but we eat rice, bread, and pan fried food regularly. We do a lot of fresh veggies and I have been bringing fruit for lunch on the days when I work out. I exercise Tues and Thurs on my lunch hour. My other exercise day is Sunday. I take a class at the local gym. If I leave myself to do it on my own - No motivation. In class I push myself to do squats and situps etc, which are good for targeting my problem areas.
I know you can't do some exercise Debthaven b/c of your hip problems. Maybe you could do a water aerobics type class?
How did you like your low carb bread? What foods are you eating? I find dieting really hard when I am home - it is easier for me to maintain my good behavior when I go to work every day.

Bean I don't love the low-carb bread but at least it's bread. I'm basically eating meat (chicken, steak, bacon), eggs, green veg and dairy (cheese and plain Greek yoghurt). One square of dark chocolate/day.

New site: My Total Daily Expenditure: MyTDEE.com This site tells you how many calories you are consuming and burning. The LCHF site I'm on says to have 1 to 2 cups of broth (not vegetable) a day for the salt to stop the Keto flu.

Day two of low/no carb. I feel mean. What carb goal are you going for? I seriously cannot get below 100. I have no will power. Most carbs have a low carb alternative. Do the best you can. If 100 carbs is what you can do then do it. I read some sample menus on myfitnesspal.com blog and they were well over 100 carbs.
This thread is helping me get back on track. Thank you.

What are people eating that adds up to 200+ carbs a day? Pasta? Sweets? Though, I don't keep track, but maybe I eat 200+ grams of fat a day. I should track it sometime, but I probably don't really want to know.

It’s super easy to eat carbs, a lot of them. Even lettuce has carbs. Carrots are 7 carbs per carrot. Of course there are different sizes of carrots so whatever “medium “ is. They’re in about everything healthy like fruit and vegetables. True total non carb is protein which too much of isn’t healthy either. I know I haven’t gone totally non carb but cutting out any bread, popcorn, sweets, is helping. I use romaine to put protein in. I am eating less and still working out so it should eventually do the job. So far I’m pleased. It’s not as severe or as fast acting as ketosis but I’ll lose weight so it’s good enough.

Yes there are carbs in everything, so "zero carbs" really means as few carbs as humanly possible.
This said, I'm not "allowed" any root vegetables (carrots, turnips, parsnips, etc). They are my favorite vegetables. But I've lost 11 pounds in 4.5 weeks so I'm motivated to continue. I cheated today for the third time in 4.5 weeks (half a small bowl of rice at a Chinese restaurant). I'm OK with that. I know I have to be extra strict tomorrow. Plus the portions are really small here.

zibazinski I really hate when people tell other people to lose weight/stop drinking/stop smoking. So believe me, that is NOT what I'm doing. Know that I mean this in the nicest possible way ... if you are serious about this, please don't look at it as "starting again", but rather as "continuing" something you've already started. If you decide to stop, that's fine too! All the best.

Yeah, I'm tired of dieting but I could barely squeeze into a dress last night so I have to stick.

The sneaky mean carbs are in dry Taco seasoning, A-1 steak sauce, onions, etc.
Riced cauliflower is very close to regular rice but it's not offered in restaurants. Grocers have that and cauliflower tots. I think the tots are higher in carbs, but a reasonable substitute. If I have a question about a food, I google it. Right now I am looking at keto ice cream recipes.

7.5 weeks and 7.6 kilos (16.7 pounds) lost. I "cheated" on vacation, I had two fruits a day instead of one. There used to be a great TV ad here, "Summer fruit, it's either now or next summer". So it was now. I'm amazed, I generally have ZERO willpower. I know I will not be able to keep this up once I start teaching again but I'm trying to keep it up till I go back. We were at a wedding this weekend and I spoke to a friend's husband who did this diet for 3 months. He lost 30 pounds. Now he stays low-carb, but no longer "zero" carb. He weighs himself every day, and when he gets two kilos (4.4 pounds) over his "goal" weight he goes back to zero carbs for 3-4 days.
I also cheated (a bit) at the (2-day) wedding. I should have bought food, but I didn't. Most weddings offer a choice of two dishes, so there is interaction with the wait staff. This wedding just served the same food to everyone. I wasn't expecting that, but I didn't want to be a PITA.

deminmaine thanks for posting! If you don't mind sharing, how much weight did you and your wife lose? Indeed it is a lifestyle change. Did you keep up with it? Did you gain any weight back? The diet I'm on is more like the Atkins 20 (first phase). I'm going into month 3. I'm getting fed up with the deprivation (although I stopped being hungry a LONG time ago). I want pizza and ice cream. My sister's ex boyfriend did the South Beach Diet, they came here that summer. He couldn't eat regular potatoes, but he was allowed sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes are my favorite vegetable. I also love parsnips and turnips. Alas, I'm not allowed ANY root vegetables on this diet, not even carrots. I know I won't be able to keep this up forever but I'm giving it my all till I go back to school in 2.5 weeks. If I cheat, I want to ENJOY it (like half a small bowl of rice at the Chinese restaurant) rather than eating potatoes and cake at the wedding because I was starving and too dumb to bring any food with me. Have you and/or your wife successfully integrated the changes once you stopped actively dieting? What do you do now that is different from before? That's the info I'm looking for.

A few thoughts. We can make a pizza but do it intelligently. Use the Santa Fe Grain/Flax Tortilla (net 5), Raos spaghetti sauce (If I spelled it correctly and your store has it). Measure your cheese. The meats. Choose your vegetables from the Adkins site. Join a LCHF FB page and read their pinned suggestions. This is also food porn but the recipes are low carb.
Search for keto ice cream recipes. I made some out of whipped cream, whipped, 2 tablespoons vodka and a single serving lemonade raspberry drink mix. It's good right out of the bowl. I froze it. It breaks into chunks but satisfies the ice cream need. I did have a hard time figuring out the macros on it. Ready whip now has Coconut and Almond whipped creams. To make your own whipped almond milk, you have to make your own almond milk to whip. The recipe is probably on Today Show webpage.
Halo makes a low calorie ice cream 200 calories per pint. I have not checked the carbs in it. I have not tried it.
There are almond flour bread recipes online. I use flax meal bread recipe but seldom eat it now. I freeze it in 2 serving sizes. Low carb bread can be bought online. I don't have a site.
Very expensive but Quest has a baking mix that is protein. Costs too much for me. I can do completely without bread. I learned y.a. bread added pounds quickly. Asiago, spinach chicken sausages have 15 grams of protein and are a great substitute for other sausages and hot dogs. The correct amount of protein is essential. I use Premier Protein shakes 30 grams to get mine up when needed.
Regarding scales. I put on 5 pounds at the start and finally, according to my scale, took that and another 5 off. (1 months since I got real serious.) I weigh at home and the scale seems to be stuck. I weighed at the fitness center on one scale and weighed 4 lbs more than at home. Dressed with shoes on and having had breakfast, liquids. I then weighed on the medical scale at the fitness center. I showed 13 pounds less. This was on the same day. The best tracking for weight is get a calendar. Put your weight on it then compare day to day (M to M, T to T and so on), same time of day. On the tracking apps. Don't be conned into eating the extra calories the say you get. I quit tracking exercise that way and put it in the comments section so I won't be dupped into the extra calories. Stay away from cheat days. They can have a hang over affect.
Watching electrolytes daily is important to feel your best. Women my age seem to have a lot of leg/foot cramps. In the middle of the night. I started eating mustard everyday. Pickle juice is part of the keto meal plan. One woman found Amish leg cramp remedy at a health store/pharmacy and it works in minutes. Self forgiveness for slip ups and begin again.

That's really sweet Artemis Windsong but I don't live in the US and we don't have those brands/products here. And frankly I'm not the type to make my own ice cream. ;-) I tried making keto bread but it was vile, so I buy it online.

I looked at keto recently, but I couldnt see how I could do that and eat with my family. I figured we'd have to make and prep 2 completely separate meal plans each week or my family would end up on a high fat/medium carb diet which doesnt seem like a good idea. Especially since keto encourages a lot of saturated fat.

raeoflyte three of my four kids are out of the house (ages 26, 30, 32). The 4th (20) is in college, although he's home for the summer, which is when I started this diet. A typical dinner might be protein, green veg or salad and a starch (pasta/rice/potatoes). I just don't eat the starch. With the recent heat wave here we've all eaten a lot of salads/melon+ham/tomato+mozzarella/carpaccio+parmesan. They eat bread with those, I don't (or I have a slice of my low-carb bread). So it's really not hard to all eat together. When it's just DH and I he eats like I do (ie no cooked starch) but he'll eat bread. When any of the kids are here, DH makes the starch and they all eat it, while I don't. We were on vacation for a week with 3 of the 4 kids and my DDIL and grandson. My DS1/DDIL/Baby! are here again now. This system seems to work well for us. So the only difference is that I skip the starch, but we don't make any special meals. I am the only person in my family with weight issues. It is true though that I stopped making tacos, pizza, hamburgers, etc. But I never made those often because they're not my family's favorites. They also eat more fruit than I do, and drink fruit juice, I don't. But again, that's me skipping something, not making something different.

That seems reasonable as a low carb diet, but what I have read of and discussed with a nutritionist and doctor about keto is that to truly do the diet you have to get 70% of your diet from fat. Too much protein and your body converts those to carbs negating the goal of ketosis. Originally I thought we could do a similar thing and dh and the kids could just add to the main meal with rice or potatoes. But none of our staples are high enough in fat.

On FB, iherb.com showed up. They have chocolate protein powder that has net 0 carbs. And baking mix that is reasonably priced.
