::Obviously one shouldn't let their normal duties fall to the wayside while doing so, but there is plenty of middle ground between moving the mouse around all day and being unable to take five minutes to draft a short list of things that need to be done.::
If all it takes is 5 minutes, then go for it. Maybe other people have much simpler, less technically complex jobs than I'm thinking of. I guess in my mind I'm not picturing a 5 minute punch list. I'm picturing the insurance company i work for, and just how much documentation is necessary to get things done correctly.

I'll clarify all of this tonight. Others have given their opinions, which I appreciate, but my concerns with this and theirs may be getting confused... I'm mainly having fun arguing with Hoops.

Sorry I am late to post. First, I don't feel guilty at all for leaving this company. I've been treated like crap and that has to stop with me removing myself from the situation. I have agonized over this many times, but the last conversation was the final straw. This organization has impacted my life in many ways, unfortunately more bad than good. Some of you know the history, but things particularly went bad after my son was born and I was only given two weeks maternity leave. I resigned from the company to work on a business that I had owned for about 5 years, and was already doing part time. That business was an accounting and consulting company for small business owners. Upon my resignation, this company asked me for 3 months notice versus the 2 weeks I turned in. They then asked me if I'd keep them as a client for my business, and I ended up still helping them for 3 days a week. I stayed 6 weeks as an employee training the portion of my job that was replaced. That part of my job was work I did in 10 hours a week. They were so far removed from it that it took those 6 weeks to train just the basics of that position. The relationship of them as a client lasted 4 months until the owner (the husband) asked me to come back full time as an employee. He presented an alternate opportunity, additional pay, etc. I accepted and closed my business.
The Wells Fargo ordeal that was referred to was business debt. I wouldn't say that the business failed. I was successful in the business, and would have continued it if the other opportunity hadn't presented itself. I closed my business and no longer generated a profit. I was personally guaranteeing that debt, along with resolving other personal consumer debt from bad decisions in college. That has since been resolved and had no impact on my personal credit.
When I say I will have a heart attack if they show me the door upon my notice, it would be from shock, not because I need the job for those two weeks. Having already been through this once with them, I know how this played out before and how they perceive their needs. Given their lifestyle changes in the recent months and upcoming calendars, travel, business needs in the upcoming months, I know they will want more than 2 weeks. If I am wrong and they show me the door out of anger, it may actually be a relief to me. The environment went from bad to toxic in short order and I know I have to pull myself out.
I also mentioned that our personal lives are very intertwined. We share a lot of the same friends and circles, we frequent the same restaurants, gym, salon, etc. I will constantly be seeing them out and about as I live my life. I am not trying to create a shit storm or burn bridges in the process. I'd like to leave my position in a good place and gracefully. If they choose to take this situation to a different place, that is on them.
I hope I've answered much of the questions or assumptions... I had a great interview yesterday and received a call back just a few hours later for the second round of interviews on Thursday. I have taken the time off and am really excited about the opportunity. The position takes my diverse skill set and applies all of it to this position. The organization itself and the culture within are a fantastic match for me. I have a friend who works for this company and feel I've got a good understanding of how it works there.
I am taking this whole process a day a time, one foot in front of the other and will see where we go.

Good luck and thanks for the update. And Mutt, I'm glad you're having fun arguing with Hoops. Not my cup of tea but whatever works.

Then my advice to you would be the same as what others have said, start documenting your job and be able to present it to them when you give your notice. If they show you the door or want you to stay on part time, I would just not take their phone calls. You need a clean break from these people.

Given their lifestyle changes in the recent months and upcoming calendars, travel, business needs in the upcoming months, I know they will want more than 2 weeks<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p> Considering how it went the last time and how you got sucked back in I’d say no. You don’t really owe them anymore than the customary two weeks. They can ask you to stay longer but you don’t really OWE them any more of your time. If you break with them for good, IMO it isn’t going to matter how nicely you do it. Once they realize they aren’t going to be able to talk you into coming back the shit is going to hit the fan. Someone who calls you a shitty person to your face isn’t going to take losing gracefully. So you’re going to probably have a lot of personal drama no matter what you do. I say pull off the band aid and then in your personal life be as nice/civil as possible and refuse to engage in gossip with others in your circle. If you remain an adult while they bitch eventually people will clue in that they are the ones with the problem, not you.

I THINK the problem is this though...she's interviewing now, and previously it took 6 weeks of in-person training to get someone up to speed on 25% of her job. So documenting her job in a meaningful way may not be possible if she gets a job offer soon.

A little documentation might go a long way. The reason it took 6 weeks before is because she let it take 6 weeks. This time, she will leave. If they can't figure it out, then they shouldn't be running a business.
What would happen if she (god forbid) got hit by a bus tomorrow and died. They would figure it out. If they had a little book that had 50 tid bits of good information, maybe it would be a little easier on them.
Think of it this way: If I died tomorrow, my husband would be able to get to all of our money, but it would be a lot easier if he had a piece of paper with all the log-on information. Without, he would have to send emails, make phone calls, prove who he is, etc. Does little piece of paper mean that he magically would manage all of our money perfectly and understand everything about it? Absolutely not. But, would it be helpful as he starts to learn everything on his own? I think so.

They'd probably get out the Ouija board and try to contact her from beyond the grave.

I think they'd find some gypsy for a magical potion that brings her back to life and binds her to that job so she could never leave again...

If you are running a business where employee turnover is a catastrophic event, then you don't abuse your employees. Documeting your work is the right thing to do, but staying at a job forever or staying longer than the customary 2 weeks is not an employee's duty.

I think she should document her duties to protect herself, not her employer.
From what we know about this company (11 employees, Maven has access to millions in cash), I am guessing they have revenues of at least 2MM a year. I am sure that losing Maven will cause disruption, but in the end, I am guessing they are going to be just fine.

I would just give my customary 2 weeks notice and stick to it even if they beg. your problem. You fell for it once, be wise this time. Get your job, get out. You don't owe them anything.

Holy holy! I had the second interview today and it went fantastic! It was a three part interview with various people throughout the organization and all went great. I am told I should hear back today or tomorrow! Fingers crossed.
The position and company feel like a perfect fit. I'll keep you all posted!

Well, if she gets an offer today, that negates the question of if she should prepare the documentation before she gives notice.

I'll keep that in mind if I ever leave this job. Although, I see very few co-workers on a daily basis. I would have to make a trip to the corporate office to get the real impact.[/span]

Congratulations MM ! I would think about what Drama said, and see how much of that you can accomplish in these two weeks. Even if you are only able to document a small part of what you do on a daily basis it'll be better than them having nothing to go on..
