I do not believe or disbelieve the existence of God. But, I wonder, how could he look down on this earth and see all the suffering; the floods in Australia where people have lost their homes, the third World countries with starving children, and all the catastrophies going on in the world. I know Christian people might say it is his will, but why? He has the power to fix things I'm sure. So, why do all this things happen? To prove people's faith? Faith in what? The only question I can think to ask is what are you doing to help all the starving children? It's not a question meant to be facetious, it's an honest question. God made people and you have to ask if everybody did everything that God wanted, and I mean everything, do you think there would still be starving people in the world? I'm not saying that bad things wouldn't happen, that is just the nature of the world we live in right now. I partially answered the question a few post earlier in reply #216.

that's something a lot of people don't get...He is not doing those things to us...in fact, humans bring most calamities on ourselves...we have not been good stewards of this earth and violent weather will continue to increase...
long ago people rejected God...i believe He intervenes when it's to further His overall purpose and plan, but otherwise is giving the people pretty much what they asked for...

Does only YOUR God exist? I can disprove the Christian god by pointing out that according to devout Chrisitians, God is infallible and the bible is his word, but the bible disagrees with itself fairly consitently. Therefore, God with a capital G does not exist.
But even if the Christian God exists, why don't the Hindu gods or Native American Gods or whatever gods exist? Or perhaps the Christian god murdered the gods that came before him and took all the credit for their work?

Try to look harder than goggling since any "contradictions" that you find can also just as easily be explained as not being contradictions by other sources.

Or perhaps the Christian god murdered the gods that came before him and took all the credit for their work? You know any other gods that have historically been proven such as Jesus? Lee Strobel did a decent piece called something like "The Case for Christ." I've questioned my faith, science explaining how different things work has only made it stronger. I've looked at the arguments that say God doesn't exist, and still have it because every logic used to explain away God is one I can use to strengthen my belief even more. You arguing that you can prove God doesn't exist isn't really all that "scientific" is it?

Jesus has proven to be a man, not a god. The god part is debatable. I think gandhi was a god. People have even written books about him!

People have even written books about him! We can debate it, and at the end of the day you will not likely change your views and I know I won't change mine. As far as Gandhi, I'm pretty sure his earthly body is still laying where people last laid it rest. I know you are going to now say that you don't think Christ rose from the dead after 3 days and we'll just go in another circle.

No, a rabbi told me that the bible was written by men and is therefore full of mistakes. But tell that to a devout (read: never actually studied the bible or applied rational thought to anything) Christian and they'll have a seizure.

I just want you to think rationally about it and accept that your way is not the only way and your god is not the only god.

Oh well obviously I believe in Zombie Christ. That's why I have a zombie preparedness kit that includes a sawed off shotgun and a chainsaw - so I can blow him to pieces before he eats my brains and turns me into a Christian

i believe the bible was written by men that were inspired by God...if one actually studies the bible, and let's the bible interpret itself, it'll explain the contradictions...too many people take one verse, out of context, and say that proves a point...that's not how the bible works

No, a rabbi told me that the bible was written by men and is therefore full of mistakes. But tell that to a devout (read: never actually studied the bible or applied rational thought to anything) Christian and they'll have a seizure. Mistakes are probably not the word I would use. The books are basically eye witness accounts of men inspired by God, who were giving a biography of Christ and what He did while he was on this Earth. You might find some events in one chapter of the Bible and not in others; it is not unusual for different authors to have different views of the same events or to find different things more important to discuss in their books. Again, my guess is all these contradictions you are talking about can also be explained as not being contradictions, depending on where you look. I am curious what your thoughts would be if every book in the Bible said the exact same thing (same stories, same numbers, etc)? You would probably argue that they all got together to come up with the stories. In a court of law, I think a good defense attorney would try to argue that the witnesses all got together beforehand if that were to happen. Also at the time the Bible was written, there were still witnesses to the different events that these men were writing about and if there were falsehoods, I can guarantee the Romans would have used those witnesses in order to stop the Christian movement before it started. Again, we will likely just keep going in circles on this one.

Ya but - zombie christ is funny. I mean, the story is that he died and then was walking around. He is like the original zombie.
Besides you are politically incorrect - but only on some subjects?

Man created god in his own image plus giving him power to forgive our own wrongdoing. Therefore, man can do whatever he wants and be absolved of any transgression by his own creation. What could be better? The idea of god is a liberal concept imposed with conservative principles.

But even if the Christian God exists, why don't the Hindu gods or Native American Gods or whatever gods exist? Or perhaps the Christian god murdered the gods that came before him and took all the credit for their work? Read more: notmsnmoney.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=fun&action=display&thread=2205&page=8#ixzz1CArtfcI4Have you considered the possibility that the "Christian" God, Hindu god and Native American god are all the same but have different names? I believe this based on the observation that nearly all religions have a belief in one all knowing entity (higher power). Whether they have other lesser gods depends on the religion but I noticed that there always seems to be one "big guy" that is above all of them. Even in Greek and Roman mythology there was one god that was above all the others. Personally, I believe God exists. I have questions and doubts and sometimes liberal opinions which I've found can sometimes put me at odds with my local Christian community. I don't "tow the party line" without question and they don't like that. However, I have also had experiences that have reinforced my faith in God. I can't prove His existence but in my heart I believe He exists. And to bring up something that no one else has - I also believe in Satan. I believe he has influence over man and that many of the bad things that happen are because he can influence some more than others. Some would argue that if God exists he would stop these things but I view God as more of a parent type entity who tries to guide us towards what is right and is there to help us pick up the pieces when we don't listen and make the wrong choices. I might be wrong but these are my beliefs and if someone else believes different who I am to say they are wrong. In the end, we'll find out the truth.

Of course they all have a big guy (or girl). Many species recognize heirarchical power structures and humans are no exception. Gods, having been created by man, naturally fall into the same patterns. This heirarchy reinforces societal norms and essentially keeps people in line. Even in non-pantheonic religions there is a clear power structure. God, priest, follower.
