It is going to be 117 degrees on Monday - no parades. Maybe that is why our state is slowly turning away from the republican party. Oh wait - no it isn't!
Last night I played Monopoly with my kids - I'm pretty sure they are growing up republican.

and let me guess, if they are Republican, then it's not brainwashing....but if they are raised Democrat or Liberal, then I'm brainwashing my kiddo?
You can read back and see where someone (not liberal) said that raising your child in line with your beliefs is brainwashing them....

Well - I'm totally brainwashing my kids. Why have kids if you can't spend 18 years manipulating how they think?! That was my whole goal - to turn them into two functioning adults who are exactly as crazy as me, no more, no less. And, it is even better if they grow up and share my view of the world - then we can be friends. I mean, it is really hard to go out and find people who share your beliefs - I thought it would be much better if I just created them.

People, people, people - You have got to read the actual study: www.hks.harvard.edu/fs/dyanagi/Research/FourthOfJuly.pdf... Our method uses daily precipitation data from 1920-1990 to proxy for exogenous variation in participation on Fourth of July as a child. The estimates imply that days without rain on Fourth of July in childhood increase the likelihood of identifying with the Republicans as an adult, voting for the Republican but not the Democratic candidate, and voter turnout. Our findings are significant: one Fourth of July without rain before age 18 increases the likelihood of identifying as a Republican at age 40 by 2 percent, the share of people voting for the Republican candidate at age 40 by 4 percent, and the share of people turning out to vote at age 40 by 0.9 percent. ... To our knowledge, this is the first study to use a natural experiment approach to quantify the effect of both childhood experience and a nation’s national day celebration on political identity and political behavior later in life. An important caveat is that we estimate the impact of rain on the outcomes of interest. While it is reasonable to assume that our findings are driven by variation in participation as captured by rainfall, this is something we cannot establish empirically given our methodological design. ... Hilarious.

Gee, when we go to the 4th parade, we chat about the bbq later, gardens, cool stuff in the parade, the fun the kids are having, and the fireworks later. I've never been given a Declaration or Constitution quiz or debate with the folks I was sitting next to. Guess I don't need to make every breath, every action, every thought a political "are you my enemy" game. Steff, you enjoy those things thanks to the founders who held the ideas expressed in the Declaration, and codified into the Constitution dear. You're welcome to enjoy all the good things conservatives-- those of us who wish to conserve the best of the founding ideals. Do blue states have good BBQ? You're welcome for that, too.

Until 'turning the country into a corporate shithole day' becomes a national holiday, the republicans do not have a holiday they can lay claim to. I'll give the democrats labor day though- doubt there is any opposition to that.

Warning to the Libs: That Fourth of July Parade is Likely to Turn Your Kids Into Republicans. And we don't want you at OUR parade anyway-- because as it turns out, it is OUR parade. Not yours. Turns out that the upcoming Independence Day celebrations and Forth of July parades in many American towns are just Republican political rallies. A just published Harvard study reveals that the fourth of July just doesn't inspire Democrats, but the celebrations- in particular the parades have the effect of making people more likely to vote Republican. The effect doesn't fade over time. weaselzippers.us/2011/06/30/harvard-study-july-4th-parades-energize-only-gop-voters-increase-likelihood-kids-will-vote-republican/Um, yeah. I never understood why libs got all panty twisted when conservatives insist we're more patriotic. We love the founding principles described in the Declaration of Independence. Lefties keep insisting the Delcaration isn't a legal document (it is) and therefore has no relationship to the country now. Of COURSE they don't celebrate the Declaration of Independence. They are too busy DENYING its relevance. As Ronald Reagan pointed out many years ago, "Republicans believe every day is the Fourth of July, Democrats believe ever day is April 15th". Lordy Palm, now you tell me..after all these years..and I always felt like after I got home from those events, the parades, the riding in the convertables of the older Vets, the marching along of the older ones with a old Sarg calling cadence, I was just reminded that I am so glad to be a American...son of a gun, wish I had known that before...what a waste of time I guess..

Molly Ok I totally get calling someone a douche that was a dumb question. But saying someone has delusions because they are telling the board a national holiday is only for a specific group of people and others not welcome I do not get. Sorry

That's not significant. Even an error of 4% could have it 2% in dems favor. You could probably do a study of people with brown and blue eyes and how they vote and get a similar finding. Oh look, "Why do fat people vote Republican?" www.knoxviews.com/node/11607 So, a better indicator for being a Republican (the top 8, 11th-21st states are all red) is whether you're fat or not. Read what the title is: Declaration of Independence. You know, a Declaration of Independence from England? That's about it. Ever hear of a law that's "Undeclaration of Indepencial"? Anyone sue because their "pursuit of happiness" has been denied? I suppose someone could challenge our Independence from England, I guess, so it can be used there. We're still free of England aren't we? So, take that, argument from a non-existent liberal! So he's saying Republicans think every day is a holiday and don't work? That's not a very nice thing to say about them, Ronnie. If that's the case, why are Conservatives always trying to introduce so many amendments? And let me fix your statement: palmbeachpaul's interpretation and implementation of the law tends to support conservatives and frustrates liberals. Self described experts who know next to nothing about liberals for one. Oh wait ... no, that annoys liberals. Am I a weirdo for not being afraid of that? Could you maybe point to some real examples or something? Honest, when I read your "liberals think/do/are" posts, it never relates to me at all. You mean an ineffectual Congressman who hardly, if ever gets any of his legislation passed and almost definitely won't ever become President? And there's his son Rand Paul, and um who's that other libertarian ... no not scared at all. We could easily pay for our deficit if there were an internet hyperbole tax. Honest, liberals don't have nearly enough hair to have on fire for all the times you Conservatives say we do and we'd have to be the size of Godzilla to have that much crap scared out of us. Yeah, it was about taxation without representation, not over-taxation. Any Tea Party people out there denied their right to vote even though they're paying taxes? Oh, and if they love it so much, why do flag-wrapping people like Bachmann and Palin always screw colonial history up? Except, you know, the ones on this board and any I've met. But I'm sure there's some out there somewhere.

As I see it, Independence Day is for all Americans, regardless of political party, ethnic origin, religion, hair color, eye color, sexual orientation, or any other factor used to separate citizens into little "pods". To even argue that it isn't is, to me, ludicrous. Patriotism is in the heart of the individual and is manifested in different ways by different individuals. While one person's way might not be the same as another's, both may be equally patriotic.

LOL! What a bunch of rubbish. I'm actually starting to think you're just posting this nonsense to wind us up.
But I will quickly explain where your error is. Your view of America is like that of a mother who dotes on her child. That child is spoiled, the child is "mommy's precious angel," that child can do no wrong. When the principal calls your house to inform you that your child just stuck a pencil in Little Johnny's eye, you claim your child would never do such a thing, you'll blame it all on Little Johnny, and then take your "precious angel" out for some ice cream to help ease the trauma your "precious angel" had to endure.
Where as I - and many liberals - see our relationship with America as a stern but loving father who knows that his child isn't perfect, that the child needs discipline, and that it doesn't always get everything right. We're not afraid to criticize our child when that child has done wrong, but we are not stingy with our praise when the child does well. We do not blame Little Johnny for the pencil stuck in his eye, and we understand that action must be taken to prevent it from happening again.
So, if you encountered the latter parent, would you claim that the father hates his child? Because that's what you're saying.

You're right, I just may. I've met many conservatives, and more times than not, after a little bit of debate and disagreement, we manage to find things we DO agree on, we focus on those commonalities, realize both sides aren't perfect. And the next thing we know, we're FRIENDS! Wow! And neither of us are calling the other "un-American," which is icing on the cake.
