I need to get the rules straight here. If a YM'er cleans out the shelves, it's OK as long as he/she is going to donate part or all of the "stuff". If a YM'er cleans out a shelf, it's not "hoarding". It's "stockpiling". If the person in front of a YM'er cleans out a shelf, it's "hoarding". And it's NOT OK even if they are going to donate the stuff. Have I got this straight? ;D You appear to be so tainted at times. You don't want to get it. So be it.

Well - when I talk about getting items to donate I got one toothbrush, one body spray and two deodorants. That's hardly cleaning out the store. I put them all in a box until there is enough to make the drive to my local pantry worthwhile.

Everyone pictures something completely different when you say that you didn't need the items because you have a stockpile while complaining about the greedy lady in front of you that bought said items. Especially now that you have shows like extreme couponing on TV, you should be more specific when saying things like that because more people are going to picture your stockpile as being just like the people on the extreme couponing show.

frugalpaininthebum: I think we're all getting a little bit frustrated with the increase in couponers. I assume it is as a result of the Extreme Couponing show, but it could equally be due to the economy. I don't mind sharing the sales, but I do think that there are A LOT of newbies that don't know that there is an unwritten couponer code of etiquette. Many new couponers will get frustrated thinking that they are going to acquire a garage full of stuff in a couple of months and stop when that doesn't happen. Many will spend waaaaay too much money in gas chasing not-so-great deals and will think it is all a farce. As the economy improves (whenever the heck that might be) some of the newer couponers will go back to their old ways. In any case there are not as many deals available and there are more people going after them, so I think this is the way it is going to be for a while. I am hunkering down for a while, just doing enough to keep my toes in the water, and waiting for the storm to pass. It might NEVER be the way that it was from 2007 to 2011 at the drug chains ever again. Maybe the couponers who push forward will say, "do you remember when....?" That is entirely possible. I've been at this for over 20 years and I had never seen it so good. In any case, hang in there and have a on me. ;D

I put them all in a box until there is enough to make the drive to my local pantry worthwhile. I like to be the lady who cleans out the shelf because it is all about me and I don't know when I might need that 300th toothbrush. You might also recognize me because I will be the one making the clerk ring every item up separately so that they are all in a separate transaction and I can get more. I will also be arguing with the clerk about using my WIC to buy poptarts (Hey, it's breakfast food, right?) and putting my stash into my 2011 Cadillac Escalade that is parked in the handicap spot. I was only shopping for a "minute" so it's legal to park there, right? ;D ETA: Oh, and keep your grubby kids away from my Coach purse. I don't want it to get dirty or to have to chip a nail while shooing them away...

Thank you for the apology (somewhat of one is better than none). Don't mention it, after over a decade of marriage giving half assed apologies for stuff I don't even remember doing is sort of a specialty of mine. DarkHonor: You crack me up!!

Okay couponers, while you're all in one place, I have a question - I have $5 off a $15 purchase at CVS. It expires in 3 days. Is there anything I can get there for super cheap? I won't empty the shelves, I promise ;D

Everyone pictures something completely different when you say that you didn't need the items because you have a stockpile while complaining about the greedy lady in front of you that bought said items. I have a very different definition of stockpiling. For me stockpiling is buying enough of your necessary items that you do not have to purchase them at full price. I like to buy things on steep discount. For example I have three of the deodorants I use in my vanity. That just means that I won't run to the store and buy it full price because I ran out that morning and need it right away. Hoarders are hoarders - they buy and keep far more than they could ever reasonably use.

Because I am alone, 1 of each used item is plenty for me until the cycle repeats itself. I'm a minimaist. I am better now than when we got married. I didn't see the need for a room full of furniture, I thought a bed, a kitchen table and a couch was enough. Boy was DH mad at me. Since hindsight is 100%, I see why now. But as a young married woman, I couldn't see it. On the other hand it was DH who taught me the importance of giving. I sure miss him. In 2 days it'll be 11 months since he passed. I'm thankful he taught me about giving to others. But, I digress.

I like to buy things on steep discount. Right, but most people don't stockpile at all. The only people we see "stockpiling" are the people on hoarding shows and extreme couponers, so that's what we picture when we hear the word. When Frugal mentioned having a stockpile in her first post and donating items to charity, I picture a huge stockpile like the extreme couponer weirdos. They all mention giving to charity when they run out of room for keeping stuff too. I was picturing an entire room or garage full of stuff, and they always have more bath products than any one person or family could use in a decade. That's why it struck me as so hypocritical for her to be complaining about the lady who cleaned out all the toothbrushes.

I figured that's what you were picturing. That's why I tried to explain what some of us mean by "stockpiling" and "donating."

Have I got this straight? ;D It is never okay to clear the shelf the first day of a sale; if it's the last day of the sale it is generally more acceptable because the sale has been going on for a week. The Extreme Couponing show is featuring couponers who are not following the normal code of ethics. For the sake of getting their totals before sales prices and coupons as high as possible, more than one has been shown clearing a shelf/shelves. This has given the new couponers watching the show the impression that such practice is normal and acceptable among couponers - it is not. It doesn't matter whether you're a YMer or Joe Blow, or whether you plan to donate the items or buy them for personal use. Big, huge, binder-carriers are always suspect in my mind. It is probably unjustified, but why else would someone go through all the trouble to do all that clipping and filing to carry around a binder that is heavy, chuck-full of coupons if they didn't intend to use as many of them as possible? I AM NOT SAYING that ALL binder-carriers are shelf-clearers because I know very well that they are not, but I would suspect that most shelf-clearers do carry a big, fat binder. In any case, veryone has to let their conscience be their guide.

I think I need to find another buzz word. No real couponer has big spaces like that. We 'stock' until the next sale cycle. All of the stores have them. Like today my grocery had buy 1 loaf of bread, get 2 free of my favorite bread. I got the 3. I'll freeze most of it because I know the 3 loaves will last me a month or more. That's what I mean when I say stocking up. Your young family would probably use that in a week.

Most people do not have the space for the kind of "stockpiles" that you see on Extreme Couponing. For the most part, expiration dates (mostly food items) would dictate that a lot of that stuff be donated or thrown out. I suspect that many of the couponers featured who do actually donate, keep more product for the sake of showing off a stockpile for the show's sake and then (uhm, I mean donate ) a lot of it right after the taping.

In all seriousness, you are correct with the recommendations (I think it is technically every 3 months but whatever...). You could probably get longer use out of it (and push it to a year between changes) if you cut down on the usage.... ;D

I'm sorry to hear your story, Frugal. I can't tell you how many times I've gone to the store to use up one or two coupons on a super great deal only to find the shelf cleared out. I've never caught any in the act, though ;D I think I might have reacted rather immaturely if I did.
I can see a few posters misunderstood you and thought you were being hypocritical. I wanted you to know that I didn't get that impression. I get the meaning of stockpile and possibly everyone who I've ever visited at their home has had one.
My stockpile is two pkgs of tp, 3 boxes of dryer sheets, 5 bottles of bodywash, 2 bottles of body lotion and 2 bottles of dish soap. Not really hoarder-esque, is it? I love the definition that we're just buying enough to last us through to the next sales cycle.

Would they not give you a raincheck? And I know someone on here said that a store had to have a certain amount of items if it is listed in the sale paper. Even if it's just 2, they still had to have the items in stock. That has happened here in our town. On Sunday when the sale papers came out, we went to a drug store that opened at 12:00. We got there around 12:30. They were out of 12 pack of drinks. We weren't the only ones there asking about them. Apparently they didn't have any when they opened.

I won't empty the shelves, I promise ;D I am not sure if you are serious Mid, but this is what I did this week at CVS. 1 Crest Pro Health rinse $4.50 1 colgate toothpaste 2.79 1 Oral B Pulsar toothbrush 6.00 Total $13.29 Minus $3.00 man coupon oral B, -$2.50 man coupon crest rinse, -.35 man coupon colgate for a total of $5.85 in MC. For a sub of $7.44 for which I had $7 in ECB's from a prior purchase. With tax I was just over a dollar out the door. For me that is a pretty good deal. And I got $7.00 in ECB's on my receipt for my next transaction. If I had the $3 off $15 I would buy an extra of the oral B toothbrush and use that coupon in place of the man one you wouldn't have an extra of. It will increase your total OOP by $3.00 but you will have an extra for next time and also get an additional $3 ECB's for next time for a total ECB's of$10 for your next transaction. You could get your out of pocket even lower if you did multiple transactions. You would need to decide if you would want to do that. Hope it helps.
