Yep, I'm a bad mother too. Had an (emergency!) C-section, can't breastfeed so have to use formula, I work, etc. It's a wonder my little 4 1/2 month old hasn't already turned into Chucky!

Ok, I get it about not using one that has been in a wreck. That is like helmuts. But we can be sure that a seat owned by another family member has not been in a wreck so that is not an issue. And are you telling me that plastic, which I have been told all my life to recyle because it is not biodegradable in landfills for millions of years, will deteriorate so much in 5 years it will be dangerous? And if so, why aren't they improving the quality of the plastic or using rubber or something?

I am worse because I let DS watch TV and eat Spagettio's which are apparently the nutritional equivalent of twinkies.

As I said, they don't know exactly when the plastic on the car seat will fail, but do you want your child being the crash test dummy. Car seats sit in a car and are subject to heat and cold over and over and over (unlike a plastic bottle) and that causes fatigue. Honestly, $150 every 5 or 6 years to keep your child safe is a drop in the bucket compared to all the other expenses of raising a kid.

There was a video a few years ago of an accident where the harness actually ripped out of the car seat shell (seat was 8 years or so old).

The plastic is the reason I've read for having expiration dates on car seats and that it is the law they have them. I don't understand it either and so far no one has pulled me over to check the expiration date of my car seat, so I don't know. I don't see why you couldn't use it. Only used one I refused was my MIL's because she got it from "some guy" who had it in a warehouse somewhere and assured her it had never been in a wreck. umm. .. no. It's been quite awhile since anyone in Dh's family or mine had a kid, so no one had any car seats that would be up to current federal standards. "Youngest" car seat is from 1983.

You can use any seat you want. As drama said, nobody is going to check the date on your seat (unless you go to a car seat safety check). But then again, why would you want to knowingly use a seat that has expired and has the potential to fail in an accident?

It isn't just weight/age for when to switch them to forward facing. Our seat said to switch when the baby's head is within 1 inch of the top of the seat, so we turned him around at 19 months. (This is the 2nd car seat. The baby bucket was packed up at 10 months).
Thank goodness I can commisserate with the other bad mom's out there. I hurt my back this weekend so we literally parked ourselves on the couch with the TV on all weekend. I probably ruined ds shot at harvard.

However, different seats have different shell heights, so if you have a short shell, you may need to buy a different seat to keep them rearfacing longer. The AAP just recently changed their stance that a child should be facing to a minimum of age 2, instead of 1.

We're not going to do the extended rear-facing thing. I might be able to convince DH to go a little while after his first birthday next month, but it won't be more than a month or two probably.

I might be able to convince DH to go a little while after his first birthday next month, but it won't be more than a month or two probably. why would he not want to keep his child safer? Well, for one thing he can't ride in the passenger seat of our car because the seat has to be all the way forward. In the van it's not as big a deal for room-wise for the people in front, but our son is really big and already is having to bend his legs to sit and you can't get in and out of the van on the side his seat is on. Plus, they're just happier forward-facing (at least my first was). They can see everyone and the DVD player in the van...which is a godsend on long trips.

Something like 70-80% of carseats are installed incorrectly and a huge percentage of children are able to undo the harness, so I expect that carseats will be safer in a couple of years as manufacturers make them easier to install and deal with the harness issue. That's part of the reason that the LATCH system came into use.
Plastic thats exposed to heat and sunshine gets brittle. It doesn't melt away but it does shatter under stress. Also parts loosen from use and wear.

This has got to be a f***king joke. Really?? You are going to roll your kid up like a pretzel and tie them in when they are 5 years old?
I really, really thought this was a joke until someone started defending it. I'm glad we are legally past child-seat age.
dramaq- I find it hilarious that you gave us a huge lecture about child seat safety and then told us how old your car was. If you are really safety concious, you should buy a car with enough airbags to save all of your lives. So, your kid will come through the crash without a scratch, but no parents. That won't mess them up at all.
I couldn't get them out AT ALL. I couldn't get them out ONE TIME, when I had carpooled and a third co-workers car broke down and asked me for a ride. It took us 25 minutes to get the stupid thing out and my hand was bleeding.

The LATCH system only attaches the seat to car, not the kid to the seat. Kids being able to undo their own harnesses isn't solved by permanently sodering the car seat to the frame of the car.

The AAP just recently changed their stance that a child should be facing to a minimum of age 2, instead of 1. The larger car seats don't fit in our car rear facing (that is if you want to be able to sit in the drivers seat). Even in my parents cars with the bigger fancier car seats he was at the top of those shells and had to be moved to forward facing. He is a tall skinny kid. We had planned to keep him rear facing until he was 2, but it didn't work out that way.

"A good mom would keep their child rear facing until kindergarten. "
A GOOD mom would never allow her child to ride in a car. Those things are deathtraps.

Apparently they have kids rear-facing until that age in Sweden. I've seen the pictures. The LATCH system only attaches the seat to car, not the kid to the seat. The LATCH system was supposed to help with the issue of incorrect installation.

Scared the crap out of me when I decided to try it on display. I told DH the kid will live but probably have massive brain damage. Good grief. I'll pass on that safety feature.
