I am every passing day more grateful that my DS2 and DDIL decided to move with their kid (now 2 kids) to Europe. I am fully aware that no place in the world is 100% safe but there is just too much killing of kids and too little will to actually do something about it here. G*d forbid there would be any restrictions at all imposed on the gun nuts! Same for my nephew who moved to Toronto. I don't worry myself about J. Guns are illegal except for hunting in Canada. I do worry about the great nephew and niece who go to school in the US. My "wonderful" sister told me "you get used to it" Seriously?

In the United States we have a constitutional right to resolve conflicts using the Second Amendment. We need to just accept that this individual right will lead to times that individuals will use it in situations others don't agree it should be used.

She is a retired teacher. She hated the drills they had to go through with students. She was afraid she couldn't protect the kids or herself and now she's like that's not a problem.

He said that in the winter when there was a school shooting in Perry, Iowa. So comforting for those who have lost their loved ones.

Yes, the kids started back to school today. Half days until end of October, after Fall break. The section of the school where the shooting happened will NOT be used for the foreseeable future. The option for remote learning (internet classes) is available to any student who isn't comfortable returning at this time. Next semester good old fashioned "T shacks" as those of us from the 80's know them as will be moved on campus to accommodate the classes no longer being held in the Math wing. the old "bad kids" school (alt. learning center) is just up the street from where I work and it will be holding certain classes that were in the section closed. Students will be bused there and then back to the CHEE campus. The alt campus is being called CHEE East for now. I noticed the new sign up a couple of days before I heard about it.
I had one of the young ladies that was shot come in last week. She was with a bunch of her friends and they were buying stickers and ribbons and things to decorate her wheelchair with. She looked very frail still. But you could tell her friends were definitely helping and holding her up thru it all.
This sounds like bragging, but it's not. The flower arrangements I made were donated to the school board & they are now being displayed in the media center at the school where the counselors and therapy personnel are set up. Next school year, they will be put into a display cabinet memorial for those that passed. It wasn't much, I didn't spend a dime (my work did), but I feel like I did contribute something small to the healing process.
Last weekend, UGA and Georgia Tech honored The CHEE during their halftime routines. 2 football players were honorary captains the the Falcons game along with the entire football team in attendance. The team was also brought out to watch practice and meet players earlier in the week. Doesn't seem important in the big picture, but it was Homecoming week when it all happened. 2 football games have been cancelled. Homecoming was cancelled. The big yearly rivalry game between the CHEE and Winder Barrow was the Homecoming game. There's some talk of trying to do a charity flag football game or something to keep up the yearly game tradition and not have it be taken away too.
And unfortunately the CHEE marching band was in the process of fundraising to march in the 2025 New Years Day parade in London, UK. That has been postponed. They want to try for 2026 now. 3 marching band members were injured by gunfire. There will be a GoFundMe put up when the final decision is made. I'll share it with anyone interested when that information is made available.
There is still a LOT of parental anger and questions. Demands for metal detectors, clear/mesh backpacks and of course, it's the South, arming the teachers. For now there will be a constant and much larger police presence on campus. There is however an INSANE amount of copycat threats floating all over Georgia and other states. It's just crazy.
It is comforting to see how many blue and gold ribbons are on mailboxes. To see all of the Love Will Prevail / CHEE Strong signs in yards and on fences. All the stores and anywhere with a sign outside still have their words of support up. We're still wearing out blue & gold ribbons at work. I see probably 50 or more people every day in Apalachee tshirts. There was a charity car show last weekend that had over 5000 people show up. Texas Roadhouse did a 100% donation of every $$ they made last Monday. One of the local tattoo shops did $13 Apalachee tattoos. They had 5 designs you could pick from for $13 (and a $7 mandatory tip). The wait was 7 hours at one point. The line was out onto the side of the frigging highway. cars just parked on the side of the highway for miles. It started at 11 am Friday and they did the last tattoo at 3 am Saturday! 70% of all they made was donated to the school fund. Someone on FB mentioned that while not every student was injured or was even close to the event, every student will still have needs that can't be met. She then suggested that everyone donate to pay off the overdue lunch accounts. Within 2 days, every late account had been cleared and had a positive balance that will carry them thru the rest of the year. Sadly, Barrow county does NOT have free lunches for students. Students who can't afford lunch are still given the old "peanut butter sammich and an half rotten apple" shit lunch that makes them stand out as a poor kid. Now every one of them will have a hot lunch for the rest of the year.
Completely sucks that it took such a tragedy to see what unbelievably amazing things a community can do together.

Then it all became a big conspiracy Instigated by the "hate speech" spouted by the opposing party's leadership. Still opposed to taking any action beyond increasing HIS protection

Here in Iowa, teachers can be armed. Several school boards have taken it upon themselves to not allow teachers to be armed in the school. They are not trained to kill someone shooting with an assault weapon and I would hope a teacher would not have an assault weapon in school.

Shelby country (mine) school districts opted out of arming the teachers. More problems than not if they were armed. I can imagine an unstable student somehow finding access to where his/her teacher stores their firearm and using it against the teacher and students.

Not all teachers are stable either. A stable teacher doesn't have sex with students and that happens every single school year.
Neither students nor teachers are trained to deal with this type of situation.
The police deemed it to dangerous in Uvalde.

There have been an even higher # of threats against a high-school in the district tomorrow that have been deemed not credible but credible enough to have armed police officers at every door all week. The middle school dc attends has less credible threats but dc says several students are asking to stay home. I'll let dc stay home if they need to. I hate everyone who thinks this is reasonable. Visceral hatred.
