All members of the Armed Forces who have been issued an assault rifle must complete a shooting exercise at a rifle club every year until the last year before they are discharged from military duty. link You know, kinda like "A well regulated militia "...

The biggest problems are domestic violence and suicide. These mass public stranger on stranger shooting with assault rifles are spectacular and grab attention - but handguns and rifles are involved in a significant number of deaths.
That said - Switzerland does have additional requirements to acquire semi-automatics.
We would be wise to do a little work around the gun culture - encouraging safety, mental health and education. But I have no faith it will happen in my lifetime.

I'm going to babble for a moment about things that you don't think about and wouldn't seem to matter much, but in fact are much more in depth than anyone would probably realize. What happens when the community comes together. Just in what we've dealt with at work over the last 2 days.
Tomorrow is the first memorial service for Mason. We (the craft store...NOT Hobby Lobby) are donating 600 blue and gold balloons for the memorial tomorrow. That means our store manager spent this afternoon driving to 6 different locations to take ALL of the balloons they have. We have 20 volunteers that are customers coming in tomorrow morning to blow up all those balloons. Our store is donating all the helium tanks that will be used. Today we had 3 volunteers, literally customers that walked in and asked "what can I help with" cutting fabric into squares, adding rocks & ribbons to make balloon weights.
We are sold out of all the dark blue tshirts, all the white tshirts, all the gold tshirts and when I left we were down to less than 10 yellow tshirts. Monday, when I stocked tshirts, we had almost 900 white tshirts. Today we had none until 2 others stores sent over all theirs. This afternoon the Athens store manage showed up with all his dark blue & gold tshirts for us. We've sold out of all the blue & gold vinyl used to make tshirts/logos/stickers. Again, other stores sent theirs over or were picked up by our manager making the rounds. We sold every single roll of dark blue, gold, yellow and every shade of blue ribbon. Literally hundreds of rolls of ribbon and we had NONE of the school colors left at all. Not a single one. Last night I sat here at home and made over 150 blue & gold ribbons that we handed out to everyone today. They were all gone in 3 hours. My manager dropped off 10 more rolls of blue & gold to me tonight to make more ribbons. We've sold out of every last bag of blue and gold beads. Alphabet beads, bracelet strings. We didn't even sell out of everything when Taylor Swift came to Atlanta. Came damn close, but nothing like how many we've sold or given away over the last 2 days. One of our managers spent last night making all of us bracelets that we wore today.
We made a poster board for people to sign or put sticker hearts on that we will deliver to the school at the end of next week. I had to make a 2nd board after a couple of hours. A 3rd board was being made when I left today. On Monday we are putting out boards for everyone to sign for the First Responders. There was a line around the counter where the boards were of people waiting to sign. On a personal note, I'm sick to death of reading & hearing "Thoughts and Prayers". Tots and fucking pears people.
I'm the "flower" person at work. I make fake flower displays & decorations that are used in our entry way decorations. I made a display yesterday that we will be donating to the school when we deliver the signatures. We've had parents and kids stand there and just cry. It's heartbreaking. I don't want to just throw my instagram page out here, but anyone who wants to see, I'll send the link if you DM me.
And everything we've sold that had anything to do with The CHEE, we've been doing it at half price or even free. You got a basket full of vinyl and tshirts? half price. You making them for The Coach's class? They're free. The 600 balloons? Free.
Today one of our volunteers who just walked in and asked "what can I do?"...well she had been diagnosed with skin cancer this morning. She said she was going to go home and get drunk and then decided that she'd come by us to get something to craft instead. she said she had to find something to focus on because her mind was too scattered & panicked. She saw what all we were working on and said that she wanted to help to focus on doing something good & getting her mind off her own problems. Can you even imagine? Hey, you got cancer. Ok, I'm gonna go donate my time to help for the memorial service for one of the victims. THAT'S community.
Signs in front of businesses and all the fast food joints, everyone last one has been changed to honor the ones lost. Yard signs, stickers, buttons, tshirts are being sold with all the proceeds going into funds for each family. Winder Barrow HS students coming in wearing The CHEE tshirts. Wanting to help. Rumors still going around that WBHS was also a target that day. Once rivals are now holding each other close. Today we saw a LOT more students from The CHEE out with their parents. A large group of students and parents went to thank the first responders last night. Our Sheriff broke down big time. Grown man ugly crying. It was heartbreaking. They were planning to make the rounds to all the hospitals over the weekend to thank the doctors and nurses. I can't even imagine being able to function much less thinking about going to thank others. A local towing company is offering to tow any cars left at the school to their owners/homes free of charge. I had a teacher today who couldn't get her card to work, then we found out its a temporary card because her purse is still in her classroom. Never even thought of those kinds of details. I voided her order and simply gave her everything for free. Barely managed to do that without crying. She said she has no idea when she'll get into her classroom. There's just so much that goes on that I never even thought about or wondered how it all comes together. It's been mind blowing, fascinating, inspiring, and all around amazing to watch and to be a small part of. I'm off work tomorrow, but I'll be there bright and early to blow up balloons and pass out more ribbons. I'll eat a Xanax when I get home to numb out instead of crying more. We're all cried out, but there's always more to cry over. It's emotionally brutal and we're not even victims, just the community. I can't even begin to image what those kids are really going thru, what those parents are dealing with, what the first responders saw & dealt with, or the loss that so many are feeling. The new normal isn't normal at all. Hugs your kids. Then hug them again.

When my Dad was a kid (Great Depression) the boys could bring their hunting guns to school, leave them in the coat room in back, and hunt on their way home. Never heard about school shootings back then. If they'd done something stupid, (Dad or his brothers) Grandpa would've given them a whipping to remember. I know a lot of folks don't believe in spanking, but at least kids respected their elders. We've lost that respect somehow. Kids swear at their teachers now, which would've gotten a kid from my generation kicked out of school. And, parents blame the teacher when their kid is flunking, rather than confronting their kid & taking away privileges. Something has to change. We need to somehow teach kids to respect others, and that lashing out at the world when you're angry doesn't work. steff, thank you for sharing your stories the last couple of days. Can't imagine how it must feel, being so close to all of this.
That said, I wish to hell that everyone would stop using balloons for events. When they break, the small pieces can look like food to animals. Ingesting them could be deadly.

Long video from the Daily Show about gun control. My question after watching it is if we sign over car titles when selling cars to relatives, why is it such a hardship to do something similar with guns? After all it's not like guns are necessary in everyday society to go to work, buy groceries or take your kids to school. And when cars are stolen, having paperwork to back up their history prior to that is often very useful for law enforcement.

The 2nd amendent was written when no one could have imagined assault rifles.
It's the guns.
I witnessed how the Columbine community came together. I also saw the news broadcast about a year later where the mother of one of the kids who was murdered killed herself in a gun store. She didn't even own the gun. She was having them show her how to use it, grabbed it and killed herself. Her grief was too much.
And please stop with the balloons.

If you are willing to message me your or the shop’s Venmo, Zelle, Apple Pay , etc. account, I want to donate to your efforts.

Just saw this editorial cartoon. Ouch! But then, sometimes the truth hurts: At the uncouth risk of making this about me, I’ve saved this cartoon as it the book inspection is a real, current, frustrating issue where we live.

Because the way you transfer ownership of firearms is via a specific person and it costs money. They are also rather scarce.

When transferring the title of a car in NJ some consideration has to change hands, usually at least a dollar. If you have clear title, you sign it over and then the buyer gets an official new title through the DMV. Not sure what the cost is, but I do not remember it being that much especially for older used cars. What does it cost now to do the above for guns? Given there are so many guns being bought and sold it seems like a good time to do something given doing similar with cars happens almost every day. Maybe the title or gun ownership cert can happen at a local police station in the future. JMO

To be able to transfer guns, you need to have an FFL license and jump through those hoops. There is a buttload of paperwork involved. Cops don’t have federal firearm licenses, not many do. Until recently, there were 3 in a 50 mile radius of us. I know at least one has been shut down to inadequate record keeping. These are federal requirements, not state or local.

Looks like much needs to be done to create a workable system.

The issue is mental wellness with gun ownership. Are the gun carrying persons in our cities with major gun crimes are they registered. Like controlling drugs you are dreaming in controlling guns in our US society. The politicians are selling you an empty dream.

My book collection would make their head spin. If I owned a bookstore, I'd have an entire section of "banned books". Education is a great tool against ignorance, something that the average MAGA doesn't understand.

I think darn near every book I read as a kid/tween has been banned at one point. DH had an aneurysm trying to figure out why Charlotte's Web is banned. It's because of talking animals. Which I said is a bit rich considering the people who are banning it read a book with a talking burning bush in it.

What does it mean now - banned book? Maybe not in the library or on reading list. But choices always need to be made for these. Obviously the reason the book isn’t bought or chosen is open to criticism or ridicule or praise
Banned books years ago meant selling importing or buying a banned book was illegal and subject to fines, jail etc

Now I realize different books are banned in different states, but in Florida some of the banned books include those I was required to read in school: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer Flowers for Algernon Anne Frank's Diary The Handmaid's Tale (I guess they don't want anyone to know the goals of the GOP)--no, I didn't read this one in school
