Sadly even though guns are highly regulated in NYC, gun violence isnt rare. Lately with random attacks (not gun related) , the perpetrators when caught have long lists of offenses. Often it includes a gun charge. Little or no consequences for the illegal guns. What use are the stringent laws if there’s little or no consequence One stereotype’ thoughts and prayers’ Another stereotype ‘ more gun control’ Both seem ineffective Personally I’d very much like to have ban on assault guns with big consequences . Ban on machine guns as a good functional model A mandated systemized look at perpetrators of mass violence. Characteristic in common? What to do with these to prevent violence Dysfunctional familly members not allowed to buy or keep guns. Universal Background checks should uncover these - domestic violence, drug use, previous felonies, drunk driving etc. Prosection if possession of guns Need some way to assure responsible gun owners ( and there are many) they’re not ‘going after their guns’ Just some thoughts Laws don’t mean a damn thing unless they are ENFORCED! Illegal persons working illegally would disappear if we were ENFORCING existing employment laws and prohibiting corporations from skirting the law would go a long way towards getting our immigration issues under control. Of course creating a better immigration system would help too. No, I don’t have the answers to that. Since most of the illegal guns in NYC originate in VA and further south, no amount of enforcing the gun laws in NYC will make a difference unless the pipeline is shut off at the source.

You make nyc seem like a dystopian hell hole. A little honest perspective about nyc would go a long way to my respecting your comments. You have the same republican talking points about nyc, instead of being honest about what the statistics show. If NY/NJ are do bad, there are any number of conservative utopias you can move to.

Teachers were allowed into the school this morning to collect their belongings, put their rooms back in order, and organize the kids belongings. Basically clean & put their rooms back to normal instead of desks & furniture piled against doors.
Parents were allowed in this afternoon to gather their children's belongings. Then tonight there is a Parents only meeting to be able to ask some questions & hear more details about what happened and the timeline.
What we're hearing is that the mom was on the phone with the councilor for anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes. While she was on the phone, the councilor was also on the phone with the police. There were 2 officers there along with the 2 campus security officers (who are armed btw). There was another student whose name is almost exactly the same, they located him first & realized he's not the one they are looking for. The CSO & police officers were actively searching for the kid, but no lockdown had been enacted. They were systematically searching the freshman hallways where the kid should be in class. They were 1 hallway away when the shooting started. It's why the CSO's were able to confront him so quickly. Still no definitive answer as to how he got the gun into the school unnoticed.
Barrow County schools go back to class tomorrow. Currently there is NO TIMELINE for Apalachee students to return to school. There's talk they may do remote learning like during Covid for the time being. There are students who don't want to return and students who are determined to return. Right now, everyone is taking it day by day. There is a plan to eventually take students thru the school if they want to. To deal with that first initial anxiety and fear. No one is saying it's a perfect plan, but they want to have all available mental health personnel there for that first return and not have the students first time back in the building be the 1st day back to school.
There is a LOT of anger pointed at Jackson County school district. They dropped the ball in telling Barrow County just how deep their trouble with this kid went. It was only his 2nd day at The CHEE. They knew what a time bomb they had and they didn't forewarn Barrow County as they passed the bomb over here. And of course, talks of lawsuits against Jackson and Barrow County Schools.
Something that stood out among all of this. Kids didn't know their parents phone numbers by heart. They had to leave their purses and backpacks. Some kids didn't have their phones with them. When offered phones by teachers or other parents to call or text their own parents, they didn't know their phone numbers by heart. TEACH YOUR KIDS TO REMEMBER YOUR PHONE NUMBER. I'm guilty of not knowing my husband's number by heart & I'm now working to fix that. It sounds silly, but we just hit "call mom" and don't know her actual number. We have to retrain our kids to have that info in their heads like we did as kids.
Hug your kids & tell they you love them.
Oh yeah, since I've been gone for awhile...have I mentioned that we're going to be grandparents in February? I've decided I can live with being called Nana. I'm so not a gramma or gawd forbid Meemaw. oh yeah, it's a boy! my name choice of Wolfgang aka Wolfie got shot down.

That is actually a good idea to talk to my kids about that. I am pretty sure they have my number memorized and their grandpa's cell memorized, not sure about house phone.
I need to make sure and have them memorize DH's number too if they haven't already.
I have DH's memorized and both of my dad's phone numbers. I need to work on memorizing the kids phone numbers.
DH and I were talking about how easily we lost the skill to memorize numbers after we had them available at the push of a button. I used to store dozens of phone numbers in my head and now I only remember at most 2 or 3.

My heart has been you and your community. Thank you for sharing in the midst of community pain. Congrats Nana! I decided on Babcia, which is apparently the Americanized version of the Polish word for grandma. I don’t feel like a grandma either, and quite happy with Babcia. Best wishes for the health and well being of mom and baby.

steff I'm in Atlanta so the local news has been filled with stories coming out of Winder including all the support from the local community. Lots of different images and interviews from various craft shops making ribbons and poster boards for the memorials. I don't know if one of those stores is yours but I have been thinking about you. We were at the Braves game on Saturday and the flags were flying at half mast as a memorial.

Home today because our school district shut down due to threat, not surprising. I'm not high enough on the food chain to get details but sure they will eventually come out.

This hits too close to home. Our school district (my kids are in elementary, but the elementary and jr/sr high are hooked together) had a bomb threat yesterday and the kids were evacuated. Everything was fine, but the person who did it (note found in a HS bathroom) was a new student who, I hear, has had issues elsewhere. I can't even with today's world. Side note: My kids know my phone number!

I remember my phone number from growing up. If I called that number right now, a Jackson Hewitt office would pick up. That is how easy of a number it was to memorize.
There were threats of schootings where I live and in the Boulder CO area today. The Boulder police are asking people not to call 911 for a status update because people with emergencies can't get through.
I read on Twitter, which I know is not a very good source, that the shooter was new to the school district.

so this was the shooters first week at this school and had previously been in a different district? yes. He had been at a different high school in a different district last year. The threats that he was investigated for last year were directed towards that school. Exact details on why he switched schools hasn't come out. don't know if he was booted or transferred. Last years threats didn't go anywhere near dealing with him. Don't know if he just hadn't been going to class or started the day before the shooting. There's rumors that he just skipped school the first month & showed up to case it all the day before the shooting. Again, those are just rumors.
It was Mason S's 3rd day at The Chee. He was attending school at Winder Barrow, but The Chee has the better special education programs so he transferred over 3 days before the shooting. It was also his 1st day without his aide. He felt comfortable enough to feel like he didn't need his aide who was always with him at WB. Yes some feel like if he had his aide, he might have survived. He was actually identified as the first victim because he family worried that he had just wandered off in the chaos. They hoped he had. His pic was all over social media early on and he was the first victim named because of it.
I had a teacher come thru today that was in the Math cluster & the shooting happened in the rooms around her. To say she looked shell shocked was an understatement. Sadly, I was the one who triggered her by asking if she was okay & if everyone she knew was okay when she said she was a teacher there. Then she said she was a math teacher, no she wasn't okay and her friends weren't okay and we all fell apart all over again.
The kids have no date to go back, but all the teachers went back yesterday. I can't imagine.
A lot of teachers from surrounding schools (WB, the Jr high, & elementary schools) have come thru and bought crafts because they aren't "teaching" this week. They're healing. This week is all about mental health & trying to heal, not academics. I do find that part an amazing idea and not one I expected to hear. We've had them get adult coloring books, tie dye & tshirts, tons of beads for bracelets, air dry clay, paints and all sorts of young kids craft kits. It just feels smart & good to not shove it all back in the box and move on as fast as possible. Hugs your kids! and teach them your phone numbers!

I'm too exhausted to discuss but in the last week my kids have shared what the teachers tell them will happen if it's not a drill. I've never even thought of that conversation happening. Ds said some teachers keep baseball bats by their doors. Dc's science teacher said that she would be by the door and would do everything she could to stop someone from getting in with scissors and chairs. While the student teacher will handout textbooks to hold in front of your face. I can't get that thought out of my head. How many times a year are kids forced to face the reality of a violent death? Statistically unlikely but likely enough that every school has multiple drills a year. I don't think it's video games that are fucking up our nation.

Here in Memphis this week, multiple high schools and multiple times received anonymous school shooting threats.
There have been several alleged arrests but more to hopefully come.

Thats happening all over I think. I just got an email that the dc school has been cleared with no credible threat found this morning. But every school in the district has been targeted in the last week with threats. Utterly exhausting.

There have been multiple threats right here in my corner of NE Iowa since the shooting in Georgia.
I can't imagine living with this constant fear.

Scissors don’t seem like an effective tool against an assault rifle.

Scissors don’t seem like an effective tool against an assault rifle. Which is what makes me want to cry and laugh and hug her at the same time. There's not much that is effective against assault rifles, except surprise and luck. The gun nuts would say the answer is to arm the teachers. Ignoring every way that would make things worse. Even armed police don't run in shooting in these situations but plenty of people will say more guns in schools is the answer.

Yes, the rescue fantasies these would be Rambo gun nuts have is ridiculous. People who have training don’t run into these situations half cocked, but an untrained civilian is going to stop these cold. Nonsense

Here they say arm the teachers. Well, the police in Uvalde deemed it to risky to go in the school.
Some school districts here allow teachers to carry in the school. That's a disaster waiting to happen.

I am every passing day more grateful that my DS2 and DDIL decided to move with their kid (now 2 kids) to Europe. I am fully aware that no place in the world is 100% safe but there is just too much killing of kids and too little will to actually do something about it here. G*d forbid there would be any restrictions at all imposed on the gun nuts!
