Taking book out of a library because it has talking animals in it or is about a wizard school or has a gay kid in is wrong.
Books are supposed to be a safe place.
Books are supposed to open your mind, challenge your world views, expand your horizons.
I will fight with my dying breath for people to have the right to read whatever book they want. It may not be my taste, I may not buy it for myself but I have zero right to demand it be removed from public places so nobody else can read it either.
Especially public school and libraries. Those are paid with state and federal dollars so church and state are supposed to remain separate.
Age appropriateness is subjective. I trust myself, the teacher and librarian and my kid herself to guide book choices.
Nosy Nancy who thinks Harry Potter is satanic can go shove a broom up her butt.
Just send it back if your kid checks it out. You have no right to control my kids choices at a library.
Libraries are supposed to be havens for kids and adults who cannot afford to purchase them.
Rich people who have the money to lobby Reynolds to get their way can shove their views on books where the sun don't shine.
You have no right to deny anyone the book of their choosing just because you're terrified your kid may wake up and realize your brainwashing isn't what they choose for themselves.

Here in Iowa an idiot tried to get Anne Frank banned because it doesn't show a balanced view of the holocaust so it shouldn't be in school.
Very concerned that anyone thinks there is "another equally valid side" to the holocaust.
The holocaust isn't or wasn't taught till 8ty grade and at least when I went was a multi class unit from history to English.
br] There are kids, now adults, who freaking lived it.
If my kid can't handle so much as reading about it I have some major work I need to do.

Over 300 bikers rode thru Apalachee HS today. They grouped up in the parking lot in front of the store, got blue & gold bandanas we had cut from fabric for them, and rode up to the school. They will be attending the memorial service tonight for Mason.
On another horrible note, today I learned that Mason lived around the corner from me. In our neighborhood. I pass that cul de sac every day when I leave the neighborhood to head to work. A flyer was passed out in the neighborhood letting everyone know that they can go to the cul de sac his house is on after the memorial service. His family wants everyone to come out and come over to honor him & be together. the police have it currently taped off and the HOA dropped the "no parking on the street" rule for this weekend.
Here's a short list of things going on and sites to donate at: Light in the Dark
A Light in the Dark event is taking place from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 6 at Jug Tavern Park, 139 E. Athens Street, in honor and sympathy of the victims of this week's tragic event at Apalachee High School. This event will pay respect with a memorial service for those who lost their lives and the families affected. Grirgf counselors will be on site and available to those who need support. Motorcycle Ride
Rally Around The Chee is happening at noon Sept. 7 in the parking lot of PetSmart at 916 Loganville Highway, Bethlehem. All bikers and anyone else who wishes to participate is invited. Once assembled, there will be a ride to Apalachee High School. Benefit Show
A benefit show for Apalachee High School will take place at 9 p.m. Sept 7 at Moonshiners Braselton, 6750 GA-53, Braselton. According to Moonshiners, they will donate 100% of the door charge, 10% or all sales, and any donations made to those impacted by the shooting at AHS. Online event
The Haus of Transformation is hosting an online community hall at 6 p.m. Sept. 8. The gathering is a space for moms to connect, share, and support one another through this difficult time, according to their Facebook post. GoFundMe
GoFundMe has set up a special page for the victims of the Apalachee High School shooting. The GoFundMe fundraisers listed on that page have been verified by GoFundMe. All donations made to the fundraisers listed by GoFundMe are covered by the GoFundMe Giving Guarantee. More information here.
It is not advised to donate to a GoFundMe that has not been verified or that you are unfamiliar with (i.e. not acquainted with the person who established the fund or the person(s) who will benefit). Barrow Community Crisis Fund
The Barrow Community Foundation, which is a nonprofit organization partnering with the Barrow County School District, has set up its own fund.
The foundation has set up the "Barrow Community Crisis Fund," with all donations going to those who need support during this time.
Donations can be made here or by calling 770-410-8655. Other
The 7/20 Memorial Foundation in Aurora, Colorado, is collecting paper cranes for the victims of the mass shooting at Apalachee High School. The origami cranes can be sent to them at 7-20 Memorial Foundation, 15151 E. Alameda Parkway, Aurora, CO, 80012, or dropped off at the Aurora History Museum. Or, they are inviting people to leave a comment on one of their social media accounts and they will add a crane for you. More information here.

What does it mean now - banned book? Maybe not in the library or on reading list. But choices always need to be made for these. Obviously the reason the book isn’t bought or chosen is open to criticism or ridicule or praise Banned books years ago meant selling importing or buying a banned book was illegal and subject to fines, jail etc Usually the decisions of what books are in the library is made by librarians, and what is on the reading list is made by teachers. If there is a perfectly usable book in the school and a government body forbids it from being in that school and has the book removed, and dictates the book is not allowed to be acquired again - that is what we are calling banned. They are banned from that school district or from all schools.

At the uncouth risk of making this about me, I’ve saved this cartoon as it the book inspection is a real, current, frustrating issue where we live. My book collection would make their head spin. If I owned a bookstore, I'd have an entire section of "banned books". Education is a great tool against ignorance, something that the average MAGA doesn't understand. Yeah, the problem really comes when the above-average MAGA has been elected to the school board.

Did anyone see the mom called the school to warn them?
I'm trying to figure out if that was separate from the other warning call that was made the same morning as well. Where someone called the school and said there would be 5 school shootings, starting with this one..
I hope more details bear out about how this information was or wasn't acted upon.
Gun laws are important. I don't know if that's the only answer to fixing the issue.

For everyone saying getting rid of the guns wouldn't work - how do you explain Australia? Didn't they do just that? 1 school shooting and the government banned certain ASSAULT fucking guns and bought them back from people. And no more fucking shootings.

As far as I'm concerned every person arguing to keep assault weapons in homes is directly responsible for killing our kids.
I live within 10 minutes of Columbine, Arapahoe HS, and the Stem school shooting. I didn't know anyone personally at Columbine, but did at both of the others. It is gutting. Just the drills are bad enough. How many people here are going to willingly work somewhere that lockdown drills are a realistic precaution? Those of you that love your guns? Are you teachers? Are you signing up to protect our kids? Protect anyone? Or just the kind of protection you think your offering by your concealed carry purses that has been proven in what... 1% of incidents? Probably less. I live about 20 minutes from the Aurora theater shooting.
I am so fucking angry.

Your justifying your party banning books because they're not going to face jail time. Sure. No jail time. The guns aren't killing kids, only people are. So we should accept the guns wholeheartedly and what? What's your answer? There must be one. Make the people dumber? Because that seems to be the goal. But I can't see that working. Why are you do pro assault weapons? We've responded to your questions about school shootings before Columbine. They were there, they just couldn't do the same amount of damage. So with that info? What's your answer?

I'm not talking about stereotypes like the loner kid that spread like wildfire when I was in school right after Columbine. I get that would make things worse. I'm talking about hey this guy said X, hey this guy has an entire manifesto on Facebook might law enforcement like to read it ASAP? The whole "oh it's mental health" thing is bull shit. I understand your anger although because of my location I thankfully do not have the experience you and Steff have had. I was unaware until recently that Georgia does not even have safe storage laws for guns. And a red flag law would help as well. I did not save the article, but I read one where the mom did call the school worried. Apparently, a kid with a similar name was searched for not the shooter. It will be interesting to see what is found out and revealed to the public in the future.

For everyone who loves their guns, when was the last time you toured a school? Have you walked your child or grand child's schedule and thought in every fucking room - where will they hide if it happens in here? The new schools are great, big closets for the elementary school rooms and pods, so that shooters are somewhat contained and only have access to 120 kids at a time.
Older schools don't have that, and by middle and high school obviously that's not realistic.
Just lock down is terrifying for me for ds because if he has a low without access to sugar or medication he could die. When it goes on for hours like it did - at his high-school - there doesn't gave to be a shooter for there to be an emergency situation up to and including death for me. Is he supposed to carry 8 - 10 hours of sugar and meds on his body at all time just in case he is locked in a single space without access to medical care?
I saw a video from the kids perspective the drills are teaching their classmates how to hunt them. Seems pretty accurate. But God forbid we take away anyone's assault rifle. No one successfully hunted before assault rifles came along.
I hope you can tuck your guns in tight at night, read them a not banned book, and sing them a story. Pray over them too for good measure to keep them safe.
Because you love them more our living, breathing, and murdered children.

2 things can be true.
There are too many guns We need to determine why these things are happening.
But again, attacking which of those things first will lead to fewer of these events. Restricting guns could be done tomorrow if Republicans wanted to do something. Changing society is a long term process.
To everybody who says we need to figure why this is happening- what do you do with a patient with lung cancer? Tell him to stop smoking, or treat his cancer while helping him to stop. Which approach could actually help his acute problem?

The solution does't have to be perfect, it just needs to be better. Again, changing society will take time, during which more people will dies. Want to try to determine why these things happen? Let the CDC do studies on these things to see if we can determine ways to decrease their frequency. But Republicans banned the CDC from doing studies on gun violence.

Sandy Hook did not happen far from where I live. My oldest son's best friend in Medical School went there. My wife was caught in traffic due to the response to the shooting when she was going to NYC that day. t has affected the entire area. Gun fanatics aren't going to be happy until schools become fortresses. Are they willing to pay the taxes required to make schools impenetrable? Going to be great for mental health. This has also happened with hospitals. My hospital has closed entrances and locked every door it can. Hospitals used to be welcoming places, but they have had to change because of security and ongoing threats. It has not been a change for the better IMHO.

If it is true that she is a noncustodial parent that has a drug addiction, there could be a history of emotional calls from her. Did she truly warn of imminent danger or just express a need (again?) to immediately drag her son out of class and talk to him? Dealing with irrational parents is challenging for school staff.

I hope you vote and act in ways to support that too becauseit didn'tcome actoss at all. Human history has always been violent. I don't think what causes the need to inflict harm is new. The holocaust and slavery are recent past. Grotesque, gruesome, and public displays of human suffering that were celebrated by large parts of the population. Angry, sad, struggling people wanting to make other people suffer isn't new. Power hungry people wanting to exert control isn't new.

Noy yet known. I think the article I read included the school psychologist saying the kid had threatened to shoot up the school again. IDK. It was one article and I did not see others like it, so I wasn't sure if it was accurate or true. Hopefully by Monday more will be revealed to the public. FWIW. I think she had more on her rap sheet from selling drugs. I don't want to decide who she is simply because she is female and linked with drugs. I don't want to do that kind of profiling. Mom and Dad are both a mess, but I have read about too many cases where scary husband makes wife do all the dirty crime stuff and keeps his hands relatively clean. A landlord spoke to one newspaper on how he remembered her being afraid of him and he had a bad feeling about them. In the end he never recovered $3K they owed him, and two dogs were left behind as well. The latter being a horrible sign to me about the adults involved.

Fuck your partisan bullshit. The vote on the bill was in July 2022. Your 'balance of power" numbers reflect what happened in the November 2022 midterm elections. Those numbers weren't in place until January 2023. Realty from your link: The bill passed in a largely party-line vote of 217-213, with two Republicans voting for the measure and five Democrats opposing it.
The level of GOP opposition indicates the bill is unlikely to advance in the evenly split Senate, where it would require the support of at least 10 Republicans to defeat a guaranteed filibuster. It’s also not clear if the measure has the support of all 50 Senate Democrats.

Would you post the accurate numbers in house and senate for the 2022 bill I looked and really thought I posted the correct info. So I was correct that it passed in house What were numbers of R/D in senate then?

Yes, she got that wrong, but she did use sources like Bloomberg etc. She just didn't check the dates. We need to change minds not become partisan purists. MO.

This is personal for me to. The same people desperate to keep their guns are voting to strip public of funding and send tax dollars to private schools. I've read a lot of non-sense about private schools being safe options. I swear it's from their play book.

Bills I could not find the info easily on the House link from Bloomberg. Easier to just Google. Congress composition changes every two years. Info probably from Copilot
In the 2020 United States Congress elections, the composition of Congress was as follows:
House of Representatives:
Democrats: Held a narrow majority with 222 seats. Republicans: Held 213 seats . Senate:
Republicans: Held 50 seats. Democrats: Held 48 seats. Independents: 2 seats, both caucusing with the Democrats2. This resulted in a closely divided Congress, with the Democrats holding a slim majority in the House and the Senate being evenly split, giving Vice President Kamala Harris the tie-breaking vote2.
Is there anything specific you’d like to know more about regarding the 2020 Congress?

Reread post re senate. Evenly split but first post says even not all democrats senators in favor of the bill Whatever, very sad situation that assault weapons weren’t banned. Seems big objection is ban on just one type of gun gets conflated into a ban on all

Doesn't matter what the Senate numbers are. Democrats could have 55 Senators, but still need to have Republican support to counteract a filibuster. Unless you are in favor of ending the filibuster.

Her first link accurately reported the partisan split on the vote which doesn't reflect positively on her partison preference. Therefore she posted the additional links to (inaccurately) support her partisan preference.

I've mostly stayed out of this thread because this situation is so upsetting to me--physically, my chest is incredibly tight right now just typing this.
Regarding calls that school offices get reporting violence (And every state is different, so I'm only speaking to where I live which is NOT Georgia.) DH told me that there was a report the mom had made a call to the school that morning. The report is from the mom. There is cell phone documentation that a 10 minute call did take place. I'm going to ask you to not pre-emptively judge this situation. You have no idea what this mom has done before or was screeching about that morning. I understand four people are dead. I understand we want something fixed. Blaming the school staff is not the answer. The mom could call weekly and make threatening statements to the staff, and they've learned to treat it as a "call wolf" situation. A substitute secretary could have answered the phone and not realized the situation. There are a million possibilities of what that conversation was and who it was with. Don't you think the person who answered the call and the school principal are devastated right now?
Much of school administration has become investigating potential threats. (Which is not why I went into school admin.) Here's a specific example from last September at the school at which I was principal. Secretaries arrive at 7:30; school starts at 8:00am. By 8:45am, I've left the building to go to to a meeting. Secretary calls me; there's a voice mail left in a child-like voice that says "I'm gonna shoot up the school tomorrow morning." Message was left the evening before. Many protocols went into action. There are so many what-ifs that could have happened. Everyone did the best they could. And the mom couldn't understand why I wouldn't let the kid back into the school when "he didn't really mean it".
We don't allow kids to draw guns on their binders; they still do and we have to have them remove it. We don't allow kids to say "I'm gonna kill you" in jest or frustration. They don't mean it that way--except what if they do? So we punish them for saying something like that. We remind them all the time to report stuff even if they don't think it's serious--because what if it is? We're doing the best we can. We make mistakes. Do you have any idea what it's like to be responsible for the actual lives of 350 children (which is the number of students in each of the three buildings I've been principal of)? Do you know what it's like to lead a class of 25 to 35 students through and ALICE drill and try desperately not to cry during --just the drill--as a teacher?
No one is working in a school because they wanted to be a part of this paradigm. Please don't blame us.
