Taylor Swift conspiracy theories engulf conservative social media

Conservative social media is engulfed with a Taylor Swift conspiracy theory centered on the idea that the NFL is rigging games to ensure the pop superstar and boyfriend’s team both make and win the Super Bowl — just in time to give a nod to President Biden in the presidential election.

Swift, coming off a year in which her “The Eras Tour” broke records, her concert movie boosted the box office and her romance with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce broke the internet, is perhaps at the peak of her popularity and fame.

That’s attracted attention from the political world, with the Biden campaign said to be interested in a “dream” endorsement from Swift, according to an article published Monday by The New York Times. Swift endorsed Biden in 2020 and has been somewhat active in politics, also endorsing Democrat Phil Bredesen against Republican Marsha Blackburn when the latter was first elected to the Senate in 2018.

Swift’s incredible popularity is also bringing to the forefront various ugly sides of 21st century American life, from explicit AI-generated deepfakes of the superstar that briefly closed down Taylor Swift searches this week on X to unfounded conspiracy theories.

Kansas City has been to three Super Bowls in five years and won Sunday in a game that featured terribly timed turnovers and careless penalties by the losing Baltimore Ravens. While Kansas City was the underdog, the victory was hardly a big surprise.

But that seems to matter little with those fanning the conspiracy on the right.

“I wonder who’s going to win the Super Bowl next month,” former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy wrote the morning after Chiefs victory.

“And I wonder if there’s a major presidential endorsement coming from an artificially culturally propped-up couple this fall. Just some wild speculation over here, let’s see how it ages over the next 8 months,” said Ramaswamy, no stranger to conspiracy theories.

Vivek is a Trump mouthpiece by choice. Wasn't Melania and DJT as a couple artificially propped up by Trumpers during his term and beyond? Only nut jobs would take this nonsense seriously which explains DJT's jump on the bandwagon assuming he did not start the rumor himself.

Maybe DJT hopes this will be a Valentine's Day gift to Melania since his public denial (verifying the truth of it) of the golden showers included Melania in the fake denial story probably lost him points with her. I would think all his public repeated lying must be getting to her, but maybe it is not. Trump Jr. and Eric are still willing to make stupid provably false statements on behalf of their dad. No reason to join in when others are wisely staying silent.

Wisely and silent is not something Vivek is capable of. I don't think he understands this is the US and not India. His brand of lies here will fail simply because his skin color is obviously not white.

A crucial factor in this bleak reality is that the incentive structure in conservative politics has gone awry. The irresponsible and dishonest stars of the right-wing media kingdom are motivated by vastly different goals than those who are actually trying to advance conservative causes, get Republicans elected, and then ultimately govern in office.



For a right-wing online influencer, the top incentive is to amass video views and shares — all in a bid to increase one’s social media footprint and, thus, power and treasure. When viewed from that vantage point, peddling increasingly outlandish, attention-grabbing junk makes sense. The same goes for Fox News hosts and talk radio personalities, who are simultaneously quietly worried that more provocative newcomers to the scene might eat into their audiences if they aren’t hardline enough.



In effect, declaring war on popular institutions like Disney and celebrities like Swift makes business sense for these media personalities. It delivers them the attention they so desperately crave while appealing to a sliver of the population — enough to carve out a lucrative career in this arena.

The problem is that lies and conspiracy theories can cause enormous harm to the body politic. And the figures who traffic in mis-and disinformation have amassed great power in the Republican Party. In fact, right-wing media stars have far more power over the GOP’s direction than most of its actual leaders, like Mitch McConnell. Don’t believe me? Just talk to Kevin McCarthy. The people standing at the helm of the ship, actually charting its path, are the handsomely paid talk-show hosts who command legions of fans and excite them into participating in the culture war battles on a weekly basis. Not the boring Washington politicians. Donald Trump is successful because he falls into the former camp far more than the latter.



The problem for the diminishing few in the Republican Party who hunger for responsible conservative governance is that these MAGA Media celebrities are leading the GOP down a path of isolation, which could ultimately result in its irrelevance with the rest of society. These conspiracy talk hosts have little-to-no incentive to behave in a way that results in Republicans getting elected to higher office. In fact, arguably it’s just the opposite. The right-wing media kingdom thrives when Democrats are in office and there are political opponents whom they can demonize.

it depends on what one means by "popular".

if it means "well known", then maybe.  the problem is that there are many places on this green Earth where American music and celebrity is more well known than American politicians.  Swift is a worldwide phenomena to a degree that DT is not.

I thought the republicans were just mad at her because she encouraged young people to register to vote, but she is very inclusive and pro human rights, and really regretted not endorsing Clinton after seeing what Trump did in office. Her boyfriend is sponsored by Bud Light and appeared in ads encouraging people to get vaccinated, so I can see why conservatives are raging about them as a couple.

An unintended consequence of the Dads and Chads hating on Taylor is how many men are coming out hard as allies. It's giving me the most hope I've had in a lot of years.

I remember a poster on here kept arguing the only reason I could support Clinton is because we both had vaginas.  If I was thinking logically I would realize she was not a good choice.

He didn't appreciate it when I said by that logic if he was voting for Trump it must be because they both have a penis.  

Out of both sexes I don't think it's women that rule the world and make laws based on that body part.  Maybe we should give it a try we certainly can't make things any worse.
