No good deed goes unpunished, huh? Do you ever think about what a country this would be if Republicans wanted to work to solve this issue? For that matter, any issue? This is from the linked article in the OP. She called on the federal government for financial help, and more urgently, expedited work authorizations to allow the new arrivals to more quickly find jobs and start earning a living, she wrote in a letter to U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas. In the letter, Healey pointed to work authorizations as a primary driver of the crisis. Currently, she said, it can take weeks, months or more than a year to receive the authorizations.
“Our new arrivals are most eager to work. The last thing they want is to be dependent,” she said.
Screw the jobs build a dam wall. a wall can be breached in under 5 minutes, unless you have guard towers every 1000 feet to defend it. that is 40,000 guards (assuming 24/7 patrol). that is $4B/year, in addition to the cost of building the wall and maintaining it. that is more than the cost of illegal migration. from a business standpoint, it makes far more sense to have a federal statute for E-Verify, and charge $50k/violation. that would stop illegal migration in a heartbeat.

The thread title is “Sanctuary Cities/States overflow with illegals“. Illegal what? It might as well read "Sanctuary Cities/States overflow with brown people." Yeah, I figured that. Just wanted clarification while deciding whether or not to read the thread and possibly increase my blood pressure.

meanwhile, net migration continues to decline: econofact.org/the-decline-in-u-s-net-migrationThe current net migration rate for U.S. in 2023 is 2.748 per 1000 population, a 1.29% decline from 2022. The net migration rate for U.S. in 2022 was 2.784 per 1000 population, a 1.28% decline from 2021. The net migration rate for U.S. in 2021 was 2.820 per 1000 population, a 1.3% decline from 2020.if you are wondering how this compares to population growth, population growth has not been as high as 1.3% since 1993. population growth is currently about 0.1%, thanks to all of the people that are dying prematurely from Covid19 and other preventable diseases.

the reason that migration is declining is that since Obama, deportations have continued at a record pace, despite the "flooding of the border" rhetoric/reality.

if GDP is growing 2.4%/year, then employment should be following suit. which means that with 0% population growth and -1.3% migration growth, we are going to see unemployment continue to drop for the foreseeable future, until we change our immigration policies.

the only alternative would be for employers to move to places like India that have a good supply of domestic workers.

Sadly Oregon. It states - Oregon’s sanctuary statute was enacted in July 1987, making it the first sanctuary state.
The law prohibits the use of public resources to arrest or detain illegal aliens whose only crime is violating U.S. immigration laws.
In 2020, Democrats in the state legislature attempted to force the Northern Oregon Regional Correctional Facility to stop contracting with the federal government to detain illegal and criminal aliens. And it's been in trouble ever since. Releasing illegals who have committed crimes from jails without notifying ICE as to their legal status if any. City, County and state officials are whimps on punishment. The law needs to be repealed. But it wont since this is a liberal Democrat blue state. You do realize that not all crimes in Oregon are committed by "Releasing illegals who have committed crimes from jails without notifying ICE as to their legal status", yes? Most likely, the vast majority of crimes in Oregon are committed by U.S. citizens in Oregon as is the case in every state in the country. I didn't say ALL crimes are committed by illegals who are released. You read into that what was not there. I'm sure a lot of them go back to their families and lay low. As with other states, crimes are committed by legal citizens most of the time regardless of their racial status.

i guess nobody disagrees then?
good. because those are the facts.
migration has been declining for over a decade.
and it is the reason WHY the UE rate keeps falling year after year.

I guess any person could read between the lines and read "Illegal" into the governors statement but the Democrat governor was just being politically correct for her voters by saying migrants. How many of these people in her state presented legal documents issued by the US to legally allow them to enter the US at the border in the first place? I say if they don't already have a papers or a visa issued by the US govt prior to entering the US in my book they are illegal.

you don't need to present legal documents. so, your book is, simply put, wrong. if you are fleeing oppression, you won;t have much more than the shirt on your back, all you need to do is suggest that you are seeking asylum, and then you will be granted an asylum hearing. if you are found to NOT have a valid case, you will be deported, the vast majority of asylum seekers are deported, rip. i get that you don't like "illegals". i will pretend to understand why for sake of argument. but they are not really "illegal" until their asylum case has been decided.

"Asylum seekers" would imply that people want to be granted asylum from war and oppression.
If they are hispanic, they are economic migrants who want citizenship..... there is no War to give them asylum from.
Taking the moral high ground is where we went wrong. We are now in a situation which is completely unsustainable, with extreme lefty lawyers thwarting any attempt to get it under control.

Here is your PSA for the day: Asylum seekers are not "illegals."Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. Ok, please explain the difference. “Illegals” enter or stay without permission. asylum seekers show up at the border and request asylum. They are granted entry while their asylum request is precessed. perhaos you’ve never heard of google?

So all the Canadians who come over to shop at Walmart for the afternoon are here illegally? They dont need a visa or “papers” from the US government to enter the U.S. have you ever actually crossed an international border? You are really quite ignorant of how it works.

If they are hispanic, they are economic migrants who want citizenship..... there is no War to give them asylum from. asylum seekers can also be REFUGEES. if there is a massive earthquake, drought, economic crisis, etc, then asylum seekers can seek refuge under international law from that.

For Rip:
Mexico is one of our biggest trading partners (China is no longer our biggest...).
I thought trump's "Mexico will pay for the wall" was a euphemism for America putting pressure on our biggest trading partner to better police (spend it's own money - not ours) it's own borders and population to keep them from crossing thru Mexico OR providing betting living conditions for their own people (so they didn't need to to flee to America for a better life.)
But, I was wrong and trump and it seems Republicans want to just literally build a wall (which seems terribly inefficient - why not just lay down land mines? - probably would cost less over time and would probably be a good solution for where American towns/cities/houses are close to the actual border - no view ruined by an ugly "wall". <-- seems like a Republican thing to do. (added - it's a military thing to do and America loves it's Military!)
With that said - do the Republicans have any sort of foreign policy they would use when it comes to Mexico and the flow of people GOING THRU Mexico as well as Mexico's own citizens crossing the border?
Shouldn't we be able to make a deal with Mexico to better policy it's own borders? Shouldn't we as a capitalistic country be able to figure out how to profit from getting Mexico to step up it's own immigration issues?
Putting band aids on wounds that aren't ever going to heal - is kind of stupid and expensive.
(and one other point... I'm guessing some Americans would get rich from building a wall along the southern boarder - what a great way to rob everyday Americans. The wall to me - is the RICH taking from everyday American Citizens without giving any of them anything in return. )
