I don't know about your area but I'm not seeing any Trump or Harris ads on TV. I haven't seen any on my local TV channels ABC CBS NBC or cable channels. Is this by design? Where are the ads being run. Just social networks?
the ads are only being run in swing states, as far as i know.
I was wondering about how they determine where to run them, in this streaming age.
Seems like when we had cable we got flooded with campaign ads. Now we have direct streaming, and I only see them when watching two shows - MSNBC News and the CBS Sunday News shows. Rarely any state candidates, usually just presidential.

10 former top military officials call Trump ‘a danger,’ back Harris
Ten retired U.S. military generals and admirals are backing Vice President Harris and warning against picking former President Trump in the upcoming election, according to a new letter.
In the National Security Leaders for America letter, first reported by Axios, the former officers write that Harris is the only presidential candidate in the race who is fit to serve as commander in chief, while painting Trump as “a danger to our national security and our democracy.”
Harris “has demonstrated her ability to take on the most difficult national security challenges in the Situation Room and on the international stage, from rallying our allies against Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine to standing shoulder to shoulder with our allies in the Indo-Pacific against China’s provocative actions, to advancing U.S. leadership on space and artificial intelligence,” they write.
They add that Harris is a staunch supporter of service members, veterans and their families, while Trump “continually disrespects those who serve in uniform, including wounded warriors, prisoners of war, and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.”
Included on the letter are three four-stars officers, Adm. Steve Abbot; former deputy Homeland Security adviser to President George W. Bush, Gen. Lloyd W. Newton; and Gen. Larry R. Ellis.
The former military officers highlight the chaotic 2021 U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, placing the blame on Trump’s shoulders for leaving President Biden and Harris with no plans to execute a withdrawal after his administration made a deal with the Taliban to pull U.S. service members from the country.

I am getting a ton of those cardboard mailers.
I live in GA, the deep red rural part.
you can actually segment markets by area on the internet now. i work a bit with advertising, and it is possible to have an internet license for music (as an example) that covers only the Eastern Seaboard, or Canada. North America is also quite common.

I stream, YouTube TV mostly. I live as close to Cape Cod without actually being there, as possible. very southeastern MA. the majority of the political ads I see are fear-mongering NH state-level ads. NH is a two hour drive without traffic. I am the opposite of their target audience. I cannot wait for election season to be over.

Same!
I have not seen too many tv ads because I watch almost no network TV, but the texts, the phone calls and the mailers have been relentless. And nearly all the things I've been getting in the mail are negative campaign ads from the Republican party on why I shouldn't vote for this person or that person. Almost none are "Hi, I'm so and so and this is why I'm running and what I want to do".

I'd be more on your wavelength if the stuff I was seeing was even remotely related to my vote.
or perhaps it demonstrates how much i am willing to endure.
touche, but you know from our PMs that I have an exit strategy in place if the big race doesn't go correctly. so my bullshit tolerance is a lot lower than the average voter this time around.

gas prices are the lowest since February, 2021, and about the same as they were (with +/- variation of course) under Trump.
so much for Drill, Baby, Drill.
if energy prices go much lower, they will STOP DRILLING for economic reasons. the cost per barrel for fracked oil is between 46-58, with costs as high as 90 for the deeper, dirtier, and more difficult oil. oil is now in the mid to upper 60's, which means that VERY SOON the US supply will STOP and we will be back to importing oil.
one of the keys to energy independence, if we really DO want it, is paying enough to extract that energy. that would mean maintaining wholesale gas prices at or above $1.50/gallon, which is about 20% below where they are now.
in other words, there is not much juice left in this lemon for ANY president. Trump, Biden, etc. if oil prices drop much more, we will lose our energy independence.

The other day I paid $1.79 a gallon using my Krogers customer card and gassing up at their stations.
this is the Invesco commodities fund. it is -12.5% since Independence Day. that is an insanely sharp move. and will find it's way into wholesale inflation.
so, that is good political news for Biden, but i don't think it is very good news for the US. it is pre-recessionary.

the Harris/Walz campaign could legitimately ask "you filled up your tank lately?" they probably won't, though, because some obnoxious Trump voter will say that they paid less than $1/gallon under Trump. which is true. that was when oil futures dropped below $0, and the entire WORLD basically stopped drilling.

The Atlantic’s October issue on Trump’s antidemocratic actions, and the Republican politicians who bent to his will
For its October 2024 issue, The Atlantic looks to the presidential election with a package of stories––and a striking cover illustration––examining Donald Trump’s antidemocratic tendencies. Articles cover the Republican politicians who bent easily to Trump’s will, and the threats that a second Trump term poses, with reporting by Tim Alberta, Anne Applebaum, Mark Leibovich, Helen Lewis, Elaina Plott Calabro, Hanna Rosin, and Sarah Zhang. Stories are publishing this week and next; please reach out with any questions or requests to interview The Atlantic’s writers on their reporting.
On the cover: The illustrator Justin Metz borrowed the visual language of old Ray Bradbury and Stephen King paperbacks to portray a circus wagon on its ominous approach to a defiled Capitol. Something Wicked This Way Comes, Bradbury’s 1962 masterpiece, was a particular inspiration. Over the course of The Atlantic's 167-year history, only very rarely have we published a cover without a headline or typography.

not only that, but they will soon discover that other than shithole countries, the places they want to go are MORE liberal than here.
we've been having that discussion on another thread here. someone thinks she wants to retire to Italy. 🤣
well, they have a neofascist government there, right now. but that is not really the trajectory for Italy, in the long term. they have universal healthcare, and treat lunch breaks like they are religion. you are allowed to travel home and have lunch with your family. in fact, it is encouraged. they have paid sick leave, mandatory. minimum wage is higher there than in the US. and there are tons of "other people" all over the place, living there and on vacation.
if it weren't for their shitty government, it would still be way up my list. as it stands right now, they rank in the top 5 still, for absolute sure. terrific place for liberals.

....in other words, i can totally see why one would want to move to Italy from here. but they don't have much tolerance for our type of conservatism, there.

I am liking his grimaces even if I am so sick of his fake stories about how this person or that person said how great he was and the related crap that goes with it.
