The Official 2024 Presidential Thread

We only have two major candidates that have even shown an interest so far publicly.  Here is what I see for both of them.

First we have Trump.

Last week, he had his worst favorability showing since he left office, but then THIS poll happened:

i have not analyzed this poll, but it is a WILD outlier- about 15% out of whack with every other poll.  of course, Harris is a distinguished pollster, so it can't be entirely discounted.  But we really need a confirming poll to judge it.  and, of course, favorability and approval are different.  favorability polls are for those that don't hold office- just what you think of them as people.

net result is that Trump was on a long downtrend in favorability, but we will see whether the Harris poll is just a blip, or something more "solid".

Next, we have BIDEN:

this story is pretty much a mirror image of Trump.  Biden's approval is hovering at around a 1 year high.  he is about where Clinton, Trump, Reagan, Obama, and Ford were at this point in their presidencies.  i would describe that as "normal".

so, if Biden runs, his chances are AVERAGE, imo.   if his competitor is Trump, it is probably somewhat better than that.

I see it as a blip.  In my opinion only, the majority of U.S. voters see trump as his own worst enemy.  trump's very poor sportsmanship (to say the least) at losing the 2020 presidential election was and continues to be childish and deplorable.  That won't change and appears it will continue for some time to come.

Should trump run as a Republican and lose in the state primaries,  I can see him continue running for president as an Independent.  If trump ends up in the general national election as an Independent, he will draw votes away from the Republican who will end up losing.

trump won't take kindly to Republicans asking him not to run.  That will only cause trump to be more determined to run.  Republican party be damned.

I think Trump will run in (and mostly lose) the early primaries, and will do a lot of damage having melt downs against his GOP rivals. He’ll be doing his usual heavy bombardment of small donors and big buck donors, sucking up a lot of donor dollars and, as usual, not sharing any with other GOP candidates for any office, which will damage their ability to run strong campaigns.

Trump will continue to lose MAGA supporters as he’s done with every stupid wrong footed thing he does (like the current NPT baseball cards) but as he loses some of the early primaries, he’ll continue with his ‘corrupt voting systems’ and his ‘I’m the most put upon president ever in the universe’ and that will keep his most devoted MAGA devotees close. I agree with Tn that if the early primaries fail to go his way, he’ll dramatically declare the start of the MAGA party and turn against the GOP, further dragging down the party. At that point all the ‘real’ GOP voters will have left, but enough will remain MAGA voters, it will make it easier for Biden to win re-election, until the GOP can produce a very charismatic new leader (I don’t think DeSantis is the right guy to win against Biden, but there are other potential less far right candidates who could).

I see it more likely that he will attempt to commandeer an existing third party structure to run under.

i changed the first sentence of the OP to overcome this objection.

in order to make a reasonable run, you have to register support in a sufficient number of states to garner 270 electoral votes.  i doubt any of the list you just posted will make it.

that doesn't mean they can't run, and win.  they can.  but only as a write-in candidate.  please correct me if i am wrong.

First off, I was mainly joking around with the list. I agree that no one on the list will be elected president in 2024 (including Donald Trump).

You did ask to be corrected if wrong so ... there are quite a few individuals on the list who indicate they are running as a Republican, Democrat, or for various other political parties. Those people could technically receive a party nomination and, if that party has or can gain a ballot listing on a state ballot, they would not have to be a written in candidate.

I have no idea if any might be competitive. I tend to sit back and let the process take care of identifying such individuals. It is a long, long time before I will have my very, very minimal say.

Unfortunately, without ranked voting, the nominees from both parties will continue to be a weird smattering of luck and strategy, instead of qualifications and likeability. Trump passed before because better candidates were edged out. Unless the Republican Party has one good candidate to challenge Trump, it is entirely possible he will sneak through again with a small, but loud, group of supporters.

If trump does get the presidential nomination - isn't it about what States trump would win in the actual Election? He doesn't need to have the most votes from American voters to win again... he just needs to win in the right states to get him back in the White House.

You are describing how trump got into the White House as a result of the 2016 election.

The winner who has the most electoral college numbers wins the election.

correct.  so the question THEN becomes: could he win the same states that got him elected last time?

i would entertain serious doubt about that.  Michigan has gone wildly blue since his election.  PA?  it is hard to imagine that as a Trump state now.  even Arizona is cause for question.  

in short, i think all of the purple states he got are not likely wins for him.

i get the objection.  

Trump presents a unique problem, because it is not really that he is too far right.  he is not really even a conservative.  so he ends up appealing to a lot of people that would not describe themselves as either liberal or conservative.  and if Democrats field a candidate that will not appeal to them, they will lose them.

i guess my point is that i don't see that happening.  but sure, it is possible.
