Elsie. People look at it and call her Elise. That is very Scottish! Short for Elspeth? No. I might have been happy with that. It’s very pretty. As far as I know DH’s grandma’s given name was Elsie. Then again, I might have gone with Elsie anyway. , I always introduce myself by my name which is pretty common and people automatically use one of the many shortened derivatives. It annoys the shit out of me because I didn’t introduce myself that way.

I didn't use my ex middle name since he was a JR. People called his dad "Ike or Isaac" then they would refer to his dad as "little Ike" and I had visions of people referring to my son as "baby Ike" I like the name Isaac but just opted to replace it with something else for the reason above. Funny how names evolve just because. I had a minimum of two people in my class with same name for years in school. Mine was "shortened" and I tried to get people to call me by given name but NOPE!! Sign of the times?? I did acquire a nickname from time to time "Jo" but that was due to my last name I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this thread!! Very interesting. I politely tell people the first time they shorten my name that my name is <my name> and not<shorter>, thanks. they get one mulligan qirg a gentle reminder, and then I just don't answer them. they get the point eventually. My ex told me the story of, shortly after meeting my older sister, the following conversation took place: "It is Nancy, not Nan." "But Bill calls you Nan." "Yes. That is Bill. My name is Nancy." Man I love my sister.

I do exactly the same thing. I happen to like my name. It's not too unusual, not too common and very easy to pronounce. People always want to shorten it or give me a nickname, which I hate when that happens. My name is ***, not ###!!

DD is named Felicia, we think a very pretty and meaningful name But somehow in MS her friends started calling her Fish. She still has most of these and they still call her Fish - an ugly name We’ve always called her Felicia very rarely Lee. Her DIL is named Felicity I went to Middle school with a girl who had the last name Walleye. Everyone called her Fish. She did not like it at first, but just quit fighting at some point. I did not say in my earlier post buy DD has Middle name after DH's mother, and DS we picked a more unusual name that went with the first name. My niece used his middle name for her son and had no idea it was DS's middle name until DD told her.

Sister has a variation of your name and that has always been her policy. Her husband's name is Richard. In college he was called Furnie because he was as quiet as a piece of furniture, so I met him as Furnie. After college, he asked to be called Richard so Richard it was. All the farmers around here call him Rich but all of the family calls him Richard.

Friends of ours have a kid named Lennon. I’m guessing that is spelling since they say he was named after Beatles guy. But I just think of Lenin. And kid is 2 and has a mullet - another bad parent choice.

I share a mutual friend with another poster here, her daughter's name is Lennon. her son's name is Rush. the parents are a couple years younger than me in their late 30s, the kids are jr/sr HS. the whole family is just super cool.

Elsie. People look at it and call her Elise. This is the only Elsie I've heard of. Sorry. Elsie the Cow is a cartoon cow developed as a mascot for the Borden Dairy Company in 1936 to symbolize the "perfect dairy product".

I think I missed this rule of yours, what was it? and, either one of these kids can choose to go by their middle names at any time, just like anyone else.

When you have the responsibility of labeling a human being, take into account that you aren't just naming your kid but also a 45 and a 65 year old adult who may move into a segment of the world in which they wish to be taken seriously. Yes, there are work arounds that adults can use if they feel they must.

Apparently, 'Bubba" is a real name. Don't name your kids Bubba.

I still call her “Weesha” because that’s how DD said it when she first started talking. A lady at my job is named Felicia. I’ve always called her “Weesha” too. I’ve “given” several people at my job names, for no particular reason. Tina is Tina Marie, Sabrina is Sabrinda. Larry is Harry. One coworker did it to me. My my middle name starts with an S, so she decided it must be Sheree. She always calls me “first name Sheree”.

I wasn’t going to let other cultures hang ups keep me from giving my daughter a good Scottish first name to go with her Scottish last name. Both of our surnames are Scottish so Elsie worked with either of them.

I was about to tag you with the same comment When I first met her (at a Kindergarten event), Lennon was a toddler and I thought she said her name was Lemming. I must have had an odd look on my face so her mother repeated that it was Lennon like John Lennon. That story reminded me of when my eldest was in Pre-K and one of her little friends had a newborn sister named "Salami". I checked with her mother who said the girl was named Celani. I didn't think they would name their child after a piece of meat!

Being a Beatles fan, I know lots of people who have named sons and daughters Lennon. Not a parenting fail at all. Most of these were younger fans who started following the music of the Beatles in the last 10 years. I know of people naming kids Harrison and McCartney, too. Some have used Starr but I only know of people using Ringo for pets.

Both of my kids names were really just names we liked. Ds has my middle name (Rae) as his 2nd middle name - meaning it's not used.
Ds has dh's last name and dc has my last name. A random comment I made years before having kids that I don't like how woman's surnames just disappear and thought boys should carry dad's name, and girls their moms. When we were pregnant our marriage wasn't technically legal and it was going to cost 2-3k to have a lawyer draw up paperwork to mirror rights and responsibilities of a marriage that I really didn't want to spend. I said that my biological kids should have dh's last name which is what we did with ds and was my plan with dc. We argued a bit, but I'm glad my last name has gone on at least 1 more generation. That first year or so, people who knew us, but didnt KNOW us were weirded out by the different last names. I think the assumption was that dc was my affair baby.

But each to their own And, as I mentioned, I definitely have issues when it comes to names!

Just remembered, our 2nd choice in name for dc was Cordelia. But their 3d ultrasound picture looked exactly like me - and even when they was born, they looked so much like me that I just thought the teen years would be awful looking like me with an out there name. They looks nothing like me now though so maybe we should have gone for it.
3rd choice was Mary Jane. Figured we'd call her Janie. But she was born the year the state was lobbying to legalize recreational Marijuana. I asked everyone I knew what they would think of the name. 85% said they'd assume we were pot heads. 10% thought we must be big Spiderman fans.
DC actual name is a nickname and every baby girl we met those first 6 months was that name or a variation of it. I really thought about changing it. Doesn't seem to be as much of an issue in school. Only 1 other kid with the name and it was pronounced differently.

you're close enough to the border that you should know of the Canadian band.... and I'm with you on those rhyming new versions of "Aidan" with extra letters. but Aidan Quinn has been around awhile longer than me, and I've always loved the name. that one doesn't belong in the list, IMHO.

My daughter wanted to name DGD1 Kai Ann. We have a distant relative named Kai, and DD liked the name. I actually liked Kai Ann, but I told DD I could imagine what ugly boys and men would say to DGD as she got older. “Hot like cayenne pepper” came to mind immediately.
DD hadn’t considered that, and chose an entirely different name.
