First was Sarah, don't know why. Middle name Elizabeth was to give her a number of derivatives if she didn't want to use Sarah. Not sure where Leslie came from either but after we decided on it, my ex refused to allow Morlie as a middle name. Here lays the body of Les Moore Killed by six shots from a forty-four No less, no more We settled on Marie for a middle name. Elizabeth is the best middle name. Options galore. Oh hello, fellow middle Elizabeth! Lol

My mom wanted to name me Mairead and my dad liked the name Stephanie, Meghan was the compromise.
No kids on my part, but ima tell you about my cats. I'm a fan of full names for pets and I started a literary pattern after Miss Katt von Cat. We had a Henry Chinaski and currently have a Charlie Asher. I wanted to name our next male cat Billy Pilgrim, but husband is the one who officially adopted him and decided to keep his foster name, Dudley. No last name, just lots of nicknames. But my next female cat will be Beezus so I HAVE to get a Ramona.

Yes, cat names, in order Benjamin William Late Name of Significant Other who always hated that the vet records had his last name on them Tillie because it was one of the names we made fun of when I was a kid. Sadly she didn't even live a year because of FeLV. Get your cats vaccinated. They didn't exist then. Maggie May after the Rod Stewart Song Tuzzie AKA Tuzarina One of my roommates had dated a CU basketball player and brought this freshman around to the apartment a lot. By the time the cat came along, the freshman was no longer a freshman but I still had a crush on him. The Significant Other came over with this kitten because I was wanting a baby. He said this was all I could have. The player had actually fallen in to my lap at a game the same week the kitten arrived. Hence the name Paulie and Abbey two kittens with Beatles references Lady Paulie McCartney and Sir Abbey Road same references. Adopted two kittens from the Humane Society. I was told Abbey was female but I had figured out that was not the case by the time I took him to his free medical check up. The bond had been forged so the name stuck and he became Sir. I mostly called him Sir. Honey Pie after a Beatles song Lucy Cat after Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds Ameila was a name I liked. Maddow was named after Rachel Maddow. If I had been thinking properly, Amelia would be named Rachel, but it didn't happen. Of course they all end up with a ton of nicknames

Oh, if we're doing pet names: Fizzgig - that stupid little furball from The Dark Crystal-this cat was just as bad
Zeus - my baby
Hera - wife and sister of Zeus.
Tortue - she hated me
Atoosa - the one-eyed wonder Persian Bones - he was a bag of bones when he found us

DD1’s name is a varient of Jane, pretty but not too girly. I wanted something strong, I read it means Victorious. We’ve only heard of a few others with her name.
DD2’s dad says we named her after the comic character Red Sonja. Um, no. I named her that because again, it was a strong but pretty name.
My mom “stole” my name from a friend who mentioned what she wanted to name a baby girl. My mom had a girl before her friend so she claimed it for me.

LC was DH’s favourite grandma’s name. It’s a lighter variant of Elizabeth and as a bonus, is pronounced the same when spelt with 2 letters as with 5.
The downside is most people flip the “I” and the “S” in their minds and call her the French version rather then the Scottish version.
We couldn’t agree on a middle name so DH finished the paperwork with my first name as her middle name. He must have given the clerk the whole story when he found out we’d gone to school together. A couple of years later when I was dropping off name change papers for a client, she assumed I was changing my daughter’s name. DH obviously made an impression, just not a good one.

My first two kids have family names..We took from our parents and grandparents. After the first two, we felt we did our "duty"
My third kid is named after my favorite literary character (from gone with the wind) My last kid is named after a baseball player.
DH loves his baseball. If the peanut had been a boy, we had a baseball related name picked out.
Gone with the wind? I read that as Wind in the Willows. I was going to ask you if it was Ratty, Mr Toad, Badger or Mole. 😀

Like gs11rmb , given my experience with people struggling to say my name correctly, I was not giving my children complicated names. Although it is unusual, Idk why my name is so difficult for people since it’s pretty much pronounced like it’s spelled. But people see letters that aren’t there, my name starts with an “R”, but people want to pronounce it with a B or W, and just regularly make a mess of it. When I was in high school, a girl I took study hall with had twin little sisters. Their names were Kayla and Shayla. I thought those were cute names, so I gave my daughter one of those names. Not very common at the time, but not complicated like my name. Her middle name is my godsister’s middle name. I teased my Mom my whole pregnancy, telling her if I had a girl, I was going to name her Jameesha. My Mom did NOT approve, so I had fun messing with her for months. My son is named after their uglass Dad, Corey. Simple. My brother’s daughters, their Mom gave the oldest one my initials, and her middle name is the same as mine. The younger one, her first name is similar to my daughter’s first name, and the same middle name. I thought it was very sweet for her to use mine and my daughter’s names when naming her daughters.

Both DH and I have common names that were popular when we were growing up so many kids in our class with our name. We didn’t want that with our 2 DDs.
DD1 shares the same name as my maternal grandmother (DD1’s great grandmother) that has passed away 3.5 years beforehand. It’s an old-fashioned name and still haven’t heard her name in any kids we’ve met yet. With her middle name, I choose it and just really liked it.
DD2’s legal name was what DD1 called her from the day we told DD1 I was pregnant. Her name is old-fashioned but we call her a nickname instead. At first, we weren’t going to use that name but we couldn’t come up with a name we liked better. DD2’s middle name is her paternal grandmother’s middle name.
The “funny” thing with DD1 and DD2’s names is my maternal grandmother had 2 sisters and 1 brother. A sister and the brother passed away in infancy (this was in the early 1900s so medical was different than now). Her sister lived into adulthood and had died 2 years before my grandmother passed away. The living sister was 10 years older than my grandmother, and has the same legal name that DD2 has (and came to DD1 when I was pregnant with DD2). DH and I found it freaky as we never talked about the family background beforehand.

We tried not to give the kids the same first name as anyone in the family, except DS2 who "had" to have the family first name like his father, grandfather, etc. Many of them go by their middle name, especially the ones in the generation where they *all* had the same first name but different middles. Of course, a month or so after DS2 was born, we were visiting Great Aunt G in the nursing home at Easter, and another relative told us about *her* new grandson - with the same first name as DS2's middle that we call him by. Even more ironic, his mother and I have the same kinda rare first name (she married my cousin). So 2 D's born a month apart to 2 E's!
The middle names are often from relatives. DD3 was born a month after MIL died, so we used MIL's middle name (which she was known by) for DD3's middle. DS4 has my brother's first name as his middle. DS5 has a variant of FIL's middle as his middle.
Most of their names are biblical, or at least very old/ classical names, though I was trying for less common names. Succeeded with DD1 and DS5's nickname. DS4 turned out to become very popular just a few years later. Was also trying to give them options for nickname - DD3 has lots of choices from her name, less so for DS4.
It's funny when DS4 talks about the other employees at the feed store where he works: Butch, Jed, Cody, Ethan, Evan, Dylan...

Why does everyone just hint at the name instead of just printing it. Not like anyone can trace it. I love the stories but end up wondering what the name really is.
Some have mentioned variations of Elizabeth. That's my sisters name. She was never called Beth, which I think is a variation. She has always been Liz. My niece is also an Elizabeth and is called E.

My DD was named after a character in a sitcom - Kelly who was a hand full and my DD also is. Kelly is also a family sir name.
H. at the time would not discuss names. Then after I'd filled out the birth certificate, he comes in and says to name him Fred; his Dad. No way.
I had chosen Sean. But I didn't know how to spell it. So he was named Luke. So since we are Biblical, he is Sean going as Luke! First GrS is Joshua; his son Caleb.

I suck at middle names too. I let DH pick those. I didn't really care too much what they were. What?! Didn't you know that as a mom when you got angry you are required to yell at them using entire first.middle.last name? You should care that it had a solid ring to it! Middle names are important! A friend said to go outside and call the proposed name. Call the kids home at night. Some names are ridiculous.

That was my choice had I had a girl. I always thought that should have been my name but alas I got one of those common names of the times along with millions of others. I'd been searching for a name to go with DH's French last name. At one of my late pregnancy screening lab tests I was waiting when a nurse came out calling for Genevieve - it was a lovely elderly lady who answered to the name, but as soon as I heard it the search was over! It was perfect. Of course, DH nicknamed her Gennabeaver.

DD has my middle name, Jennifer, as her first name and my DSis's first name as her middle name, Anne. DS goes by his middle name, Phillip, as he is a 3rd after his grandfather and father.
When DD was in third grade she was one of 3 Jennifers in her classroom, so she changed her name, awing all of her classmates. She used her new self-designated name, Ruby, on her homework and test papers and quickly had everyone calling her that. Even the office used her new moniker when they asked for her.
Her excellent teacher waited until parent-teacher conferences to ask me what I thought of it. She had told Jennifer/Ruby that she might not be able to use a new name before speaking to me. I told her it was up to her, but I'd keep calling her Jennifer at home. I thought she might have some administrative issue or find it too inconvenient. But, no. She just thought I might have an issue with it. I said, it's not up to me. Then the teacher and I speculated about where she got the name. I thought maybe it was from the song, Ruby Tuesday. I asked DD later and she said it was from Anne of Green Gables.
It was funny, other parents did have an issue with name changing. There was a Jennifer in DD's girl scout troop, daughter of the troop leader. The mother asked me about my DD's name and I told her, yes, DD had changed her name. She told me that she forbade her daughter from doing the same thing; that it was the name she'd been given at birth and she must use it. Honestly, that never occurred to me.
When Ruby started 4th grade she went with Jennifer.

DD is named Felicia, we think a very pretty and meaningful name But somehow in MS her friends started calling her Fish. She still has most of these and they still call her Fish - an ugly name
We’ve always called her Felicia very rarely Lee. Her DIL is named Felicity

I didn't use my ex middle name since he was a JR. People called his dad "Ike or Isaac" then they would refer to his dad as "little Ike" and I had visions of people referring to my son as "baby Ike" I like the name Isaac but just opted to replace it with something else for the reason above. Funny how names evolve just because. I had a minimum of two people in my class with same name for years in school. Mine was "shortened" and I tried to get people to call me by given name but NOPE!! Sign of the times?? I did acquire a nickname from time to time "Jo" but that was due to my last name I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this thread!! Very interesting.

I politely tell people the first time they shorten my name that my name is <my name> and not<shorter>, thanks. they get one mulligan qirg a gentle reminder, and then I just don't answer them. they get the point eventually.
