Where did you get your kids names? Are they named after anyone? How did you come up with the names?
DS: Seth. The creator of Family Guy is Seth MacFarlane. I love that show. I hadn't really heard the name Seth before that. I liked it. As an aside, I thought Seth wasn't super common. There are 4 Seths in his grade.
DD: Madeline. Named after the children's book Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans.
In an old house in Paris
That was covered in vines
Lived twelve little girls
In two straight lines.

Mine are totally biblical, which is funny since I'm not religious in the slightest.
ODS - Samuel (Sam). My ex and I fought over the sex of the baby my whole pregnancy, he wanted a girl and I wanted a boy. I read in a baby name book about Hannah and how she prayed for a son every night.
The Bible says "the Lord remembered her," and she became pregnant. She named the baby Samuel, which in Hebrew means "the Lord hears" or "the name of God." When the boy was weaned, Hannah presented him to God at Shiloh, in the care of Eli the high priest.
YDS - Elijah (Eli) because why not? A couple of fine Amish sounding names says our Amish farrier. Also thought I was picking an uncommon name with my first, but there was Sam's everywhere. He had 3 in his scout troop alone. Eli is doing a little better being original.

DS's full name sounds very Jewish. Neither DH or I are remotely Jewish, lol.

Lots of kids have for first name Irish family names, Kelly, Etc or place names, Brooklyn YDS was supposed to be Mark. He was baptized right after birth as still in danger. I had fainted, Jerseyguy was distraught and couldn’t remember what we had picked. He was born on Nov 22 so priest chose John Robert for the Kennedys.

Sarah came from the song, though I spelled it with an h.
Sara, Sara, storms are brewin' in your eyes
Sara, Sara, no time is a good time, oh
Sara, Sara, storms are brewin' in your eyes
Sara, Sara, no time is a good time for goodbyes
I was leaning toward Hunter for DS, and learned that Chase meant hunter - it sounded better with his middle name (DGM's maiden name.

First was Sarah, don't know why. Middle name Elizabeth was to give her a number of derivatives if she didn't want to use Sarah.
Not sure where Leslie came from either but after we decided on it, my ex refused to allow Morlie as a middle name.
Here lays the body of Les Moore Killed by six shots from a forty-four No less, no more
We settled on Marie for a middle name.

My first two kids have family names..We took from our parents and grandparents. After the first two, we felt we did our "duty"
My third kid is named after my favorite literary character (from gone with the wind) My last kid is named after a baseball player.
DH loves his baseball. If the peanut had been a boy, we had a baseball related name picked out.

Mine aren't really named after anyone, I just liked the names. T1 is Marcela and T2 is Isabel. I wanted to name her Rebecca, but baby daddy had a cow in Mexico named Rebecca so he vetoed that name.

DH picked out DD14's name before we were married. It's a unique enough name without being way out there. Sometimes people spell it slightly wrong but it's pronounced the same. Nicole was his middle name choice, but as I got closer to giving birth, I realized it had no meaning. So I suggested Mae after his grandmother Bertha Mae whom I adore. Turns out she actually spells it May. DH still teases me that he was right and I was wrong about that one. We confirmed with Grandma before official naming took place.
ETA - his choice for a boy was Wolfgang. Again, talked about before we got married. Shortly after our wedding, we got a cat and I quickly named it Wolfgang...DH didn't realize the preemptive strike until 7 yrs later when we got pregnant ROFL.
DD14 was 4 when I was expecting DD10. She insisted the baby was going to be named Sarah. I couldn't saddle my second daughter with a 'plain' name after a beautiful one for our first. So I went searching for names where Sarah could be a nickname. Came up with something perfect although ironic bc DD10 is far from the meaning of her name.
ETA - Big sis never called lil sis Sarah. On her first visit in the hospital, when I told her the name and explained that she could still be Sarah. She said no, mama, her real name is too pretty. Win! It's still a nice family story.
Nickname choices were a requirement of both since my name is too plain to make nicknames and I always wanted one. Both names have at least 5 variations and school friends have added more. I love that for them.
My mom's middle name is Faye which she isn't too fond of, but we used it as inspiration of DD10's middle name Faith. My mom was pleased with that choice and both daughters like having namesakes.
Wanted to use Lorelai after Gilmore Girls or Veronica and nickname Ronnie after my fav uncle but our last name is an R so DH thought it sounded too matchy, matchy.

Although it came out after she was born, my Sarah's song was Sara Smile by Hall & Oates. Her mother and I would be out dancing on date nights, it would get played, and we knew it was time to head home.

Having no children of my own, I only have other people's stories to share.
I might have mentioned this before. A colleague's neighbors, who were both mathematicians, named their children Seven (boy) and Trillion (girl).
Now that I think of it, I do have my own anecdote. My family has a habit of recycling names through generations. I could have been a Hester, a Magdalena, or an India. Instead, my parents chose the dullest, most common and boring name from the available collection. I hate my name.

DD1 - Harper - Always loved the name, love To Kill a Mockingbird. Middle name is half of my favorite aunt's first name.
DD2 - Chloe - Random name thrown out while I was in labor. Her name was supposed to be Adaline Rose, but she came out stubborn and 8 pounds of squish - not looking like a dainty Adaline Rose at all. Wish I would have given her the middle name Jane after Jane Austen, but I suck at middle names.

DS1 was named after two of our grandfathers. Edward (was still living) Stephen (deceased). DS2 was named after the next door neighbor Paul. No it was a popular name in her family.

SIL has beautiful names Genevieve Yvonne. Her brother, Jerseyguy, had a wicked side. He convinced her to choose Bertha (after a great aunt) for her confirmation name

No kids for this 50's baby.
My grandmothers' names were Bertha Mae and Flossie Mae. So the middle name was easy.
The first name was picked because they liked it. They thought I was going to be a boy so only had boys' names picked out.
There were 5 kids with my first name in my kindergarten class of 12 students.
I have always been happy with Mae as my middle name.
Bertha Mae has over 50 grandchildren so she couldn't make quilts for all of them. She decided to make quilts for the ones that were named after her or grandpa. Three of us got quilts. I am so happy with that quilt. It is so special and I have had so many cousins tell me they were jealous I got one.
Grandma never told her children she was going to do this until most of them were born.

For both my sons I used grandfather names for the middle names. They both sounded good with their first names too, so it worked out well.
(oh and those are biblical too! LOL)

Wanted to use Lorelai after Gilmore Girls or Veronica and nickname Ronnie after my fav uncle but our last name is an R so DH thought it sounded too matchy, matchy. I apparently did this, as a 3yo. my mom named my sister a particular spelling of a common name, in order to give her a less common nickname. think "Teeny" vs" "Chris" for Christeen, for instance (not my sis's name, but you get the point). my wise-ass self instantly shouted "Chris!" when I saw her in the hospital nursery, and no amount of Mom pushing for "Teeny" would get me to budge. so my sis goes by the nickname my mom hates and was trying to avoid with the alternate spelling. oops?

I just picked names I liked. Only requirement was to have an A middle names. So I have Kimberly, Ryan and Jeremy.
The only controversy was when I had my first boy and I wanted to name him Jeremy. DH’s grandmother told him he couldn’t because his cousin had a boy named Jeremy, and they had same last name. So older boy is Ryan. But for 2nd boy, said to heck with it, he is going to be Jeremy. We lived 200 miles away from DH family, and have only seen the other Jeremy twice at funerals. Of course my Jeremy now lives in Atlanta area and so does the other one, but they have a fairly common last name.
