Good Lord. We are still going on vacation and Gwen listed to me this morning everything she was going to pack. I said she's acting like a Victorian with her steamer trunks getting ready to go on a trip to Europe with her spinster aunt before settling down into marriage. I read too much. She's free to figure out how to pack it all, I'm not doing it for her and I've already told her no we are not buying her a second suitcase. We were going to jersey shore for a week, leaving after I got home from work Saturday. Well DH let the kids pack for themselves, no directions other than going to beach for a week. That night opened youngest suitcase - filled with toys and a big phone book. No clothes. Asked him what the phone book was for - making paper airplanesNo problem, he went to sleep as dressed and next day bought him a bathing suit etc Actually I worked with a woman in marketing. When she traveled to meetings she often didn’t pack if her life was hectic. She bought toiletries and clothes there, usually some sort of resort. This made me LOL.

It's 104 degrees out there. A friend invited me to the Lachine Rapids, maybe do some kayaking. This heat is deadly for people with heart conditions, so no. I'm sitting here with the fan on, watching an X-Men marathon. I never liked Wolverine. I despise sideburns with every fibre of my being. That guy is all sideburns. Footloose is on CMT, if you have that channel. solid soundtrack. No, I like the X-Men series. I just hate his sideburns. Did you know many of the X-Men movies were filmed in Montreal? CMT? Isn't that a country and western station?

We just finished meeting with the attorney to start our new estate plan. We both really like her and her common-sense approach to things. She had opportunities to upsell us on stuff but didn't. I'm looking forward to having things in place by end of year latest.

Isn't that a country and western station? fair enough, and yes. Country Music Television. but, they air older movies on weekend afternoons. the next one in the queue is Varsity Blues. that was 97-99ish? I was in college. 🤷♀️ I've seen it, it hasn't aged well at all, and I'm all set now.

My cousin's parents would never tell her when they got married. No one in the family knew either. Mom said they showed up at a family dinner and cousin's mom was pregnant.
She is the one who lost her dad this past winter. She found out they got married a year after she was born. She found the paperwork and they went from Des Moines to Omaha to get married.

I did get the house vacced, but still need to mop and dust.
We went to our shrimp peel and we got a ton of shrimp. DD and I could not begin to eat them all so brought the rest home. I had cole slaw and baked beans, small servings, she only ate the cole slaw. Then DD had a couple of cookies. Since we haven't had a lot of calories today, I treated us with DQ. DD a small blizzard and me a medium shake. We are so full we are about to pop. but it was a nice treat for us. We don't do this often anymore, so now it is a treat.
Just don't know anyone anymore, I saw one guy hubs and I know in the VFW, that's it. Our age group is either dead, or too ill to go for the most part. We are losing everyone we know. Another older man hubs knew passed away last week. Our age group is thinning out here. DIL is begging us to move there, I told her give it a year or two, we may be able to. She said he acted more relieved, yes, having to worry about and deal with his mom was tough on him. It bothered him to see her in the state she was in.
Now I'm thinking about showering and putting my jams on. Mopping and dusting, still need done, sigh. But I have a sweet kitty curled up beside me on the recliner and that makes my day.

I need to update our will. It's pointless to leave half of everything to DD, will just go to the government. Her trust only kicks in after both of us are deceased anyway so we keep putting it off.

I need to update our will. It's pointless to leave half of everything to DD, will just go to the government. Her trust only kicks in after both of us are deceased anyway so we keep putting it off. As part of the package, we are getting new wills, durable POA's, medical POA's and, of course, the revocable trust. A local bank trust department will be the secondary trustee for both of us. She agreed there is no way we can ever qualify for Medicaid and reviewed our LTC policies, finding them very adequate which is gratifying given their cost. I really like that elder law is her specialization, nothing else. It will take a bit of work on my part to get things re-titled into the trust, but after we reach the goal line, annual maintenance should be minimal. She's working to set up an annual membership structure where members would get X hours annually for updates to their trust for a fixed fee, which I like. The bank's trust fee would only kick if they actually acted in their trustee role. We decided, at this point, not to create guardianship-of-the-person documents as she feels the medical POA is adequate in 95% of cases.

All of the other documents are done, we just need to change the split of assets in the will. Hubs wanted 50/50, I told him it's pointless. He agrees, I just haven't done it.

Soupandstew, seems your lawyer went to your house? I’ve never heard of that, maybe cause you’re having so many documents? Anyway good to have it done My sister was disabled and mentally challenged but very sweet. I was advised not to be her guardian although I was her SS representative, had financial POA . Her nephew, my son, is a physician and was her medical representative. Attorney thought medical rep was better as there are just so many possibilities that it was not reasonable to actually name them all. We all loved her snd wanted the best possible life for her. At the end she was in hospice
Rationale - one person who was on sisters care team told me (she had a very disabled child) was that a person who had a guardian’ ceased to have rights’?? Never had any problem with banks hospitals etc

Never had any problem with banks hospitals etc Yes, the attorney came here as her office is 20+ miles away and we don't drive on the freeways any longer. Our next meeting will be via Zoom, and the final meeting at our house to sign the documents. If one or the other of us becomes incapacitated (and that's a very broad category) under law and the medical POA is deemed inadequate or challenged, the capable spouse will need to go to court to be declared guardian. The most common circumstance is dementia. We discussed the possibility of DH's increasing hearing loss being used to declare him incapacitated, and she said as long as he could communicate by other means such as writing, the POA should be honored. We talked today about whether to go with a more elaborate medical POA that listed a lot of circumstances and possibilities. She accommodates clients' wishes and has some who do very specific "do this but don't do that" list. She advised against it because it's her experience that it opens up door to challenge if a circumstance is not specifically listed. Every state is different, but usually a person does lose their rights if a guardian is appointed. I think the situation is somewhat different for someone like your sister who has probably not been capable of managing her affairs for some time, versus a situation where a stroke, dementia, stroke etc suddenly takes away their competency which might happen to me or DH. Your sister is blessed to have you and your son watching over her interests.

Ye, they do lose their rights with a guardian. They are not considered competent to make decisions for themselves. You act in their best interests and are appointed by the court. I have to make reports of her assets every 18 months and to the state more often. But I could see where they could easily be abused both financially or physically without anyone realizing for years.

And that is exactly the problem if you don't have family member or good friend to accept the role of guardian. The court will appoint someone, usually a local attorney, to take on the responsibility. While I'm sure that many of them are decent enough, our local courts have a sad history of appointing some attorneys who only seek to line their pockets financially. You rot, they profit. We have just enough $$ to be tempting and I have no desire to play vegetable while funding someone's European vacations and mistresses

My whole body hurts. This is what it's like living next to a farmer that can't let anything go until morning! Got home from the party and my neighbor was in my yard pulling my camper out ouf the shed. I'd asked him to help me with that tonight so I could get it fixed up. Now it is oppressively hot and humid here today and I had spent the entire afternoon outside at a party. I was so ready for a shower and AC, but I don't turn down help when it shows up at my door. So, this is how my evening went. Got home at 5 and never got in the house since neighbor was already here. He got the camper out and I mentioned the ratchet thing wasn't working when cranking it up, and what I was told to do to fix it, so he says lets give it a shot. An hour later and three times cranking it all the way up and it's reset and working fine again. Great! Productive night! Let's call it a day! Nope, hold the phone. He brought his impact wrench to get my bad tire off the lawn mower so I can take it in to have a tube installed. There are wheel weights on it, so it was a bit of a PIA. I told him I would take the tire into Fleet Farm tomorrow, but was in no hurry to get it back because I needed to figure out what was going wrong with the deck. Well, that ended up with us taking the deck off, cleaning it, replacing the blades, greasing the pulleys... Everything seemed to turn fine by hand so we put the deck back on (no easy feat) and he tells me to give it a shot. It's like 7:30pm now and I'm dripping sweat. I don't want to. I figured if it didn't work I'd be all depressed after all the hard work, but agreed. Fired it up. It didn't work. It locked up and started smoking almost immediately. His response? Let's take it off again and figure this out. Well, we did, and we did. The idler pulley was locking up. Luckily I have 3 identical decks and one is a junk one so we pulled the idler off of that one and swapped it out. Then put the deck back on again. It runs beautiful now...well...it's missing a wheel at the moment so I can't drive it, but the deck sounds really good. He left at 9:15. Four hours and 6 beers after coming over to pull the camper out. I took a long hot shower and a fist full of ibuprofen.

Back from brunch with MIL at the Flying Beaver (no dim sum). We sat outside and watched float planes take off and land. It was a nice day to sit outside. My meal got horribly screwed up though.
Went to Starbucks, got a drink and chatted a little longer. I guess we got home in the afternoon. Harriet got left at home, it was too hot for her to stay in the car while we were eating.
Fingers crossed the patch on the waterbed holds.

I am up at an hour where I should not be. I am so hot and I cannot tolerate the missy in my bed when I'm hot like that. Fingers crossed when she shares a bedroom with the peanut, she'll stay in her bed.

Farmers usually make good neighbors. Their etiquette says help when you can and help will appear in return.
Mpl - sorry for your late night and the timing of the help. The way you described it reminded me so fondly of my farm upbringing so thanks for that. Wish us city dwellers could figure that out. I offered DHs help to our neighbors today as the husband is tackling a whole revamp of their family room TV area - blank wall with typically TV furniture going to mantel, electric fireplace, shipklap, and mountef tv. I walked in Fri night to collect dd10 from her playdate and they had six holes in the wall. I offered to host all day sat playdate which is not unusual. I said DH could help for a couple hours if they needed extra hands but the wife said she'd be able to handle it.
I took dd10, their dd9 and 6 to mcds for lunch. Can't remember the last time I've sat in one instead of doing drive thru. The older two became tweens somehow and the little one always cracks me up. Then they played here all day and I didn't even see them til they rustled up a snack. Then both families packed up easy dinners and went down to the pool which we shut down at 9. Great summer day.

I'm debating getting moving. my phone's weather widget says it's only 76 degrees out right now. I could be deep cleaning my car before it gets too hot.
ETA - would someone remind me to put in a Yankee Candle order before the end of today? I have a code for 40% off my whole purchase (ending today) and I hate trying to navigate their site via mobile. thanks.

OMG, my car was gross. I used the slime I bought right before it went into the shop, and there is dirt more powerful than that in the back seat where the pups sit. 🤢 at least I got all the pollen and dog fur out of the front/dashboard/gear shift/windows. I gave up when the slime was starting to stick as it melted. I'll try again tomorrow morning for the last few spots.

I made eggplant parmesan for dinner last night, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it turned out. For some reason, it's not a dish we had while I was growing up I've only made it a few times now.
My sisters and their children will be here along with my mother for a family dinner this evening. My youngest sister moved to Ecuador several years ago, so I don't get to see her very often.
I will spend the morning and afternoon preparing.
