I will bake the cookie dough I made yesterday and decorate the wire Christmas tree in about an hour or so. We must have started something yesterday - now other neighbors are decorating their houses outside, too!

Even Des Moines, Iowa was redlined and had deed restrictions.  Then the freeway came in and all of the houses were gone.  That was about the time I left so I don't know where Black people live in Des Moines now.  The Des Moines suburbs are very, very white.  

The neighborhood I grew up in is mixed race.  There are actually children living on the street again.  It's been merged with another school that has closed.  

Once we all grew up, the elementary school I attended is a magnet school.  This is what the Des Moines Public school system says about it:


In addition to general education students, Garton also serves students throughout the district with mental and physical disabilities. Special Education, Title I and ELL (English Language Learners) students are integrated in the general education classrooms through the inclusion program. Garton has 4 and 5 sections of grades K-5. Garton has a population of over 600 students comprised of diverse racial, religious, cultural and socio-economic back grounds.


It's been merged with another school that has closed.

Junior high is also a magnet school.  It's a Baccalaurette school and any student within the school district can apply.

Both of these schools were brand new when I attended.  Both had additions built while I attended.  During the last week of 5th grade, we were told we were going to junior high for 6th grade because there would not be room for 6th grade at Garton.  At the semester of 6th grade, an additional classroom of 6th graders was added.  That's how fast the schools were growing.

Then I went to high school.  My high school was considered the Black high school.  It had the reputation of being the most dangerous high school in the state.  It is still considered to be the most dangerous high school in the state.  DN3 had a job offer there and my sister talked him out of teaching there.   Some schools forfet games rather than play home games.

We had racial strife in the school in 1968 and 1969.  Black and white kids did not get along.  White kids were racist and didn't even try to hide it.  We had a riot in the student center.  Kids were injured and later expelled from school.  

All of the houses in the neighborhood by the school were where Black students lived.  They have all been torn down.  I don't know when or why but they are gone.  

I'm rambling to try to explain the neighborhood where I grew up.  Now this small town is also racist and also does not like anyone who isn't Catholic.  That means I get shunned here by the people and families who have been here forever.

I just wrote a check for the first time in idk how long. I'd gotten a quote to power wash my house a few weeks back, and decided to wait on it for now with all the work shit going on. the pups and I were out walking, and the kid messaged me to say they had availability today and they were in my neighborhood. he could be there in 20min, and knocked $100 off the price. okay then! house looks great now, and that's one thing off my projects list for in between jobs.

Sitting down for a bit after baking the cookies and getting the last load into the washer. Looked over the holiday ads (we do not get a paper Thursday, so the ads came today). Found a wine that my manicurist loves, so she will be getting that.

Well, my intention was to work hard on Friday and Saturday and be a slug on Sunday, but that didn't work out. My neighbor and his son and grandson came over with the tools to take my tire off and then decided it was a good day to clear all the boxelder trees off the property line.  So we did that for a few hours.  I now have a really nice bonfire pile in the pasture.

Anyone want to buy a pretty sterling silver Tiffany key ring for $200? It's pretty but so useless to me. My company gave it to me for my 5 years of service. I looked it up and it's $275.00!! I would lose my keys in a heartbeat if I used it. I keep them on a shoelace on the kitchen door so I don't lose them. I've trained myself well. I need to clean up the house a bit and stop emptying out the bank account. Of course, I have 3 8-year-olds to buy for and I want to get something small for their cousins who are here as well. One kid already has her skates sitting on my office floor. Now I need to find Legos that won't kill my bank account. Oi! At least they're the only kids I have to shop for. Sister and BIL are getting gift cards and my core group of Bible study ladies are getting small things and I'm done. Oh wait! I do have a work friend I'll probably get something for. Crap. I need to shop. Online. Stores are a pain in the ass to go to lately.

J's Christmas gift has been purchased.  I knew I would get a link for clothes from NIL and that is what I got.  

DN3 still hasn't sent any ideas.  For his stepson's birthday, his wife said not to get him anything.  I hope she doesn't act like that again.

I would just get that little boy an age appropriate Lego set.  If you have some photos of the baby, look at the style of the clothes she  is wearing and get a cute little sweater in that style. If you buy by age (x months) it may be a bit too large with her health challenges but the winter is long and she will grow into it. Have Amazon (or whatever you use) add in a note with "with love from TheOtherMe. Happy holidays" on it

How about Willie Nelson's "Still not dead". I just love the humor of that song and then there is the fact that, while I am not a great fan of country music, I just plain love Willie

well, I just shut the laptop down for the last time. I'd been streaming YouTube TV since I switched over on Friday afternoon as I closed out of work. if it was still streaming, the screen saver would never kick on. 🤷‍♀️ I had football on, the laptop screen is bigger than any other I'd use to stream stuff while cooking. but the feed buffered long enough to kick the screen saver on, so I'm out. oh well, the Pats game wasn't really worth watching anyway. I pulled up the stream on the old tablet and found the end of A League of Their Own, followed up by My Cousin Vinny on CMT. I will *always* opt for ALOTO.

I'm almost done with pup prep, another ~7lbs of beef and the kale is wilting now. I froze about half of the laat batch, and plan to do the same with today's work. it will be one less thing to have to do while trying to pack for myself when I bring the pups to mooch and M at the end of January. they would survive if I just packed a gift card, but I'd never hear the end of it from him.

I don't love heavy rap, never got into dance music or EDM for the stupid lights. but pretty much every other genre of music is in my list of shit to listen to.
