Ugh! I'm remembering today why I rarely go to Hobby Lobby. First, they ran an ad in the Sunday paper advertising 50% off on a bunch of Christmas items, including paper plates, napkins, etc., so I went this morning to pick something out early. That shipment hadn't even arrived at the store. Then, I find one item not originally on my list that I'll get since I made the trip, and they have only one, slow cashier working. Some manager came up & began to ring up a few people, but then she left, so I'm guessing I waited about 20 minutes to purchase one item. I'm not going back anytime soon. I don’t know if policy has changed but last time I bought something as a gift they didn’t issue gift receipts! That was last time I purchased a “gift” there. Most stores will give gift receipts if you request. Heck, around holiday shopping stores ask if you want gift receipt. Little annoyance in the grand scheme of things I know.

That's not a city.....it's a small town. I'm a Big City girl. To me, small town is under 1000 people. A couple bars and maybe a corner store. We have 2000 people, one bar and a great general store that will be gone with the one of the two brothers that owns it dies. We did just get a Caseys, so we have 2 gas stations.

Okay, ever since Hurricane Helene I have been watching videos posted by Mountain Mule Packer Ranch as they used their mules to get supplies into damaged areas not accessible by vehicles. Now I want a mule! A friend of mine commented that a mule and a horse both have 4 feet, but the mule has a brain too. Having owned horses, they are 100% correct

I'm done with designing the 2025 calendars. I'm going to start a thread on how to order just in case anyone is interested. I can get a discount on them if I order within the next week, so I need a show of hands. I want one!

For those with house cleaners - how much are you paying with approximate square footage? I haven't had anyone since before covid. Trying to get an idea of cost before I start looking for quotes. I've never paid by square foot. I pay for the job. I describe what I want done and they do that. If I ask for extra things, they will do them and they charge for it. The last cleaners I had here were $120 for 2 people to come for about an hour. They cleaned the bathroom, 1 bedroom, kitchen, living and dining room. It would cost more to have the 2 other bedrooms cleaned but they are not used as living space. I know there is a minimum because of the time it takes to get here. That is monthly. I can't afford weekly or bi weekly.

Every size of community has plusses and minuses. We lived in Corpus Christi, Texas up until 1981, population 249K which seemed like a pretty big place to me at the time. Then we moved to Victoria, Texas, population 45K. That seemed really small in comparison to Corpus Christi. I could go from my desk to my horse's stall in under 30 minutes. But there was nothing to do there but cowboy, rampant racism, and a very high crime rate because it's on the drug route from Mexico north and small-town law enforcement can be understaffed, ill equipped and corrupt. Then we moved to Houston in 1991, population then about 1.7 MIL. We truly fell in love with the sheer craziness of this place, home to everybody from across the globe with all that means both good and bad. I honestly can't explain it but there is a spirit here, a flavor, that is both maddening and exhilarating. The global feel, the fact that we are minority majority, that our city and county is a very blue island in a red state, is very, very important to us. We deliberately chose to live in a community that many shunned as dangerous at the time. We will have lived in this house 30 years next summer. We've never been burglarized, we come and go from pre-dawn to late night (in my working years I sometimes got home at midnight), we haven't activated the burglar alarm in years. I got the surveillance cameras because of threats from neighbors unhappy with my community association work. And absolutely no place on the planet will hone your driving skills like Houston . That's what I love about living in Montreal, a city of 4.3 million people. Every language spoken under the sun, people in colourful agbadas and turbans wandering around, every ethnic food you can think of (not much Mexican. ...don't ask me why.) tribal music, concerts, the biggest jazz festival in the world, artistic endeavours from around the globe and more. There's no neighbourhood I'm uncomfortable walking in at all hours.

We $100 for about 3 hours of cleaning. That generally covers 2.5 baths, including primary bathroom which is fairly large, the kitchen, and probably 1000 sq feet of hardwood floors.

My cousin wants me to come over more and hang out. He lives 30 minutes away! That's so far! Are you really walking everywhere though? Hey, there are some I don't drive through in the daytime. The trick is to be smart about where you go and what you wear while doing it. You want to get followed home and robbed - head to the fancy restaurants in your Merc wearing the diamonds or shop the Chanel store at the Galleria. You have to watch out going to the bank because the odds are you will be followed if you leave with cash. It's simple - don't offer bait if you don't want the big fishes to grab it.

We get, but not often, which means people are clueless when it happens. They also drive through underpasses that are clearly flooded even though they put flood gauge markers on the side of the road. You can't fix stupid. It's not the weather that hones the skills as much as the other drivers. We were coming back from lunch at a little taqueria a couple of blocks away on a two-lane, 30 mph street. And here's a big black SUV coming at us head on in our lane. All DH could do was pull to the curb and let them go their merry way. They were driving well, did not appear drunk or stoned, just in the oncoming lane. Had local plates too. People turn across multiple lanes going left from the right lane, right from the left lane and so forth.

While walking alone late at night is generally safe, it's advisable to stick to well-lit streets. If encountering an inebriated person, maintain confidence and continue walking. While they might engage in conversation or sing in French, there's usually no imminent danger.Jan 29, 2024 chasingpoutine.ca/is-montreal-safe/#:~:text=While%20walking%20alone%20late%20at,there's%20usually%20no%20imminent%20danger.

I made a new friend in SA. I’ll call her C. She called me today and we chatted for almost 3 hours!

She doesn’t hang out with the people from her facility, so on the 2nd night, when we were at the outing, she met the ladies from here. One is my boss’ administrative assistant and she brought 3 of her friends with her. I’ve known her for years, but had never been around her socially until she went to a seminar the first time, when we were in New Orleans. Let’s just say it was surprising. I drink adult beverages, but they DRINK, DRINK.

So when we got back to the hotel after the outing that evening in SA, C was sitting with them at the smoker’s table on the side of the hotel. That was when I first met C. One of the friends had already gotten loud as we were leaving the place where the outing was, so I knew what kind of shenanigans were about to unfold, since I’d learned my lesson in New Orleans. So when that friend arrived, it was time for me to go. C didn’t know what she was getting into, so she stayed.

C is 40yo and says when she first met them, she thought they were some nice little mature ladies (the loud(est) is the youngest, the others are early 60’s and up) and C said she thought she might get some new recipes or something or maybe they’d teach her how to knit or something. She was so serious about what she thought hanging with them was going to be like lol.

It didn’t take long for her to realize why I’d left. They were drunk and loud. The AA went and got her Bluetooth speaker and they were blasting Cardi B and other music like that, and singing along with raunchy lyrics, and some other bs.

The next day, C told me when she met them and went to sit outside with them, she didn’t realize she was joining a gang lol. She said they tricked her by appearing to be some mature church ladies or something, and she ended up getting into a gang and she guesses when she gets home she’s gonna have to start a gang chapter in her hometown.

She said she is a very curious person, because she was shocked that they weren’t what she first thought, which is why she didn’t leave the first night, and her curiosity got the best of her again, so where did I see her the next night? Sitting outside with them again. I stopped to chat with her and she said she was hungry, so I walked her to the pizza truck in front of our hotel so she could get something to eat. She took her pizza back to where the gang was, and I skedaddled after she got settled with her pizza. When I walked through again a little while later, they were still out there. I chatted with C for a minute, and disappeared again.

I think she felt like she was stuck because they’d befriended her. But heck, I knew them and I still wasn’t hanging around for their antics. They are good people, but I don’t like being around people that draw attention like that, I prefer to just chill and fly under the radar. Especially out in public like that. I also wasn’t trying to catch a drunk and disorderly charge, even though I wasn’t being disorderly myself. I’d had some drinks, but I wasn’t drunk and I was acting like a normal person. I don’t know if everybody would’ve gotten arrested for a few people’s antics, or what, and I wasn’t trying to find out.

To be fair, most of us had started drinking during our lunch break. The organizers know what they are dealing with, there is always free food and an open bar at the evening activities. But there are only a couple of people that are known for getting sloppy drunk, and the “gang” is now known for how they act when they get drunk. And they’re GONNA get drunk.

It was just hilarious to me that C kept saying she thought she’d found some nice mature ladies to hang with, but she ended up unintentionally joining a gang. Idk why she started calling them a gang, but it was SOOOO funny to me.

I don’t tell people’s business, so I’ve never told anybody how my boss’ AA rolls when she’s out. People that really know her know, but it’s not for me to tell anybody that doesn’t already know. So I can’t tell anybody IRL about the “gang” stuff, so I had to tell y’all.

Welp, this is how my life goes. Every time I have a have a happy moment, some bullshit comes right behind it.
As soon as I made my last post, my Mom called me crying and stuttering because the utilities are shut off at my house for non payment. She was talking about how she has nowhere to go, hinting that she wants me to come get her and bring her to my house. I told her I’ll call her back. I feel like a piece of shit, but I’m not gonna go get her. I let her come to my house during winter when an ice storm was forecast, because I figured my house would lose power, and it did. But that is different from shit being cut off due to non payment.
She has no money to get the utilities turned back on, and won’t have any until next month.
FUCK ME!
Excuse me while I go cry.

I am speaking of persons who leave a store with $30-$250K in merchandise. They are also usually driving a $200K car and perhaps wearing another $100K in jewelry. Sometimes it is a setup with store personnel alerting their pals, sometimes it's simple observation. Either way that's a big payday for the thieves. Our Galleria is the most notorious location because they have all the designer stores. When a single purse can run $10K or more...

I think your momma needs one of those little signs that say something like, "Oh look, there's the consequences of my actions". Unless someone put a gun to her head and stole her $$, she knows what the utilities cost and when the bill is due. And most utility companies don't disconnect on the first month missed, especially for the elderly, so I'm going to guess she is something like 90 days behind. I'm going to take a guess that she's been eating well lately instead of paying the bills. STAND YOUR GROUND!

Just got back from Costco. For a rainy Monday, the place was crazy busy. $350+ later, we are home. The dog needed food, she had about a day left in her bucket. At first I thought they had stopped carrying it, but it was in an end cap. I hate it when they move things around on me.

I reminded my Mom that I’ve been telling her since I moved, that she really can’t afford to live in my house. That was during and after the time when I kept cutting up about her being in my pockets even after I moved.
When I reminded her of that today, she said she knows, but every time she has applied for senior housing, she got denied because of her credit. First of all, as far as I know, she has never applied anywhere. She certainly has not told me she did. Second of all, the last time she said she couldn’t move because of her credit, I told her that she’d been in my house since 2018, and she could’ve started fixing her credit during the time I still lived there and was paying all the bills, but she was making new bills instead, that she didn’t pay. So her credit issues were still her fault. I didn’t even get into that today.
But third, somebody here said that because she gets SS, her credit doesn’t matter for senior housing. Is that really true? I am certain that one of the reasons she doesn’t want to move is because wants to be able to pick and choose when and if she pays her bills, and doesn’t want anybody having control over her money and be forced to only have what’s leftover from her necessary expenses to spend, with no room to try to finagle.
It’s been so long since I did something just for me and actually had a good time, that I’d forgotten that it always comes with some bulllshit right after. That has been how it has been for me, for some years. Any time I dare to just enjoy myself, something crazy comes along the same day or the next. That is seriously a pattern, so much so that before I forgot how to have fun, I did it with reservations, because in the back of my mind I was wondering what SHIT was coming after it. Sometimes while I was in the middle of trying to have fun. True story.

I can see if you're downtown in a big city but your new house didn't seem like it was in a very walkable area and that you'd have to drive to go anywhere. Why do I have to walk everywhere? I lived 3 miles from downtown KC at the last house. It was ghetto and there were constant drive bys. I wanted to live NEAR it. The new place is about 10 minutes from downtown. So I can still go there easily and get to things or meet friends. Driving an hour or more one way to something is not my idea of a good time. ETA: I now see the line in my post you're questioning. My bad. I drive to downtown and can walk around all day doing things since everything is right there.

I'm sorry about the crashing into cold hard reality, aka your mom, Pink Cashmere. That sucks. You deserve a good time away with no bucket of ice water on your head following.

The seniors I work with that go to senior housing do have their credit pulled. However, I guarantee they don't all have stellar credit. The apartments are very interested in evictions and if they paid that landlord the judgement amount. YMMV.

so I found out some news last night that I refused to believe until this morning when I saw multiple friends posting about it. a fun loving guy from NYC that I knew from my music cruises apparently passed away almost a month ago, and none of us knew. he had abandoned FB after he got hacked a few months back, but I'd figured people kept in touch. we hadn't been especially close, but we always had a good time together.
Riz was 42, and passed due to complications of heart failure. 🥀 please keep him and his mother in your thoughts.

Mister apparently got a hair up his ass (like he accused me of doing a couple of weeks ago when I started shoveling shit out of our house), and drove the old John Deere mower to the curb, because he’s ready to get rid of it (thank God!).
But I was nervous about it just being on the curb and some random person thinking it was okay to just take it, so I told Mister he needed to at least put a “free” sign on it or something, making it clear that it was okay to take it.
So I posted it on FB, because I preferred someone I know to get it. We weren’t selling it, we were giving it to anybody that would come get it. I got some PM’s about it, then about an hour ago Mr. T called Mister and asked why it was on the curb. Long story short, he came and got the key from Mister and drove it home lol. I was wondering why he would want it, he has a zero turn, but he told Mister that he and their son would tinker with it to fix it, so that is a good enough reason. It runs, but it’s still problematic. I guess it’s something simple for him to teach his son as a beginner about working on stuff. So that’s great imo.

Mom, went into senior housing. They had to have some income, I'm sure they didn't pull credit as she had none, ever. They paid something like 20% of her income, SS for rent. It included heat, water, sewer, electric, cable. All she had to pay was for a phone and to use the washer dryer. The rest was hers. Her SIL was there and almost didn't qualify as her husband was retired from GM and got a good pension, it was on the edge of being too much. I had to take mom to sign up, you may have to do the same, good luck.
She should have been on many lists the last 6 years.

Mister decided to start grilling some food an hour or so before it got dark. Then, because it’s kind of cool outside, he asked if I wanted him to light the firepit. I wanted a firepit for years, even at my other house, but never bought one. He bought one after we moved here, but I’ve always been nervous about using it, because our deck is made of wood.
So at first I just said no. Then I said he could light it if he wants to. And I sprayed the deck down with the water hose and left it laying nearby instead of putting it away.
So now we are sitting on the deck with the firepit lit. And because I am a Nervous Nelly, I keep looking to see if the water underneath and around the firepit has evaporated or whatever, so I can put more water down.
But other than my worries about a potential fire hazard, it is a relaxing scene. Idk what’s going on with the grill, or even what he is cooking. That was his idea, and I’m not concerning myself with it.
