Happy birthday Greenthumb59. I hope your DH recovers fully.
I am driving a new car! DH bought me a new 2024 RAV4 Prime! It is a metallic blue color called Blueprint. Very pretty color. It has more bells and whistles than my old one so I have some new tech to get used to. This morning it gave me a verbal warning that traffic was slowing down ahead on the freeway. Also when I was on the offramp my screen display flashed a picture of the cars around me. Pretty cool, but really there was nothing I needed to see. DH warned me about that. His truck also has that feature.

i'm up the roofers are here bright and early. They are tearing off the old roof. I called hubs and told him whatever they are scrapping off just looks like paper. It doesn't seem to be tarpaper like they have now.. He said likely what they were using at that time. Since this place is 18 years old its time. Hubs aid it might have made it 5 more years but why take a chance on it leaking, so new it is. We got a white or gray color, since we don't have a lot of trees near us and no industrial smoke I'm hoping it stays nice. They didn't have a color like was on it and I didn't like many of them. It's architectural shingles. Now the outside of the house will be in good condition. Last big expenditure that I know of. The living area is 1900 sq ft and then a 2 car garage, don't think its included in the sq foot, so over 2000 for $15k. But we got a price concession and we think its a very good investment.
I hope we can sell some houses or we may be eating lots of beans and cornbread. Luckily we like it, LOL!

Care to share how that works? Do you have rewards categories that are higher than others. We get a hefty chunk of change back from our Costco card each year…..usually in the $3000 range. You get 4% for gas, 3% on travel, 2% in Costco and 1% on everything else. We try to run as much of our travel as we can through the Costco card and every bill we can pay by credit card goes on it too. I do that with my Sam's CC.

Glad I got to see her perform, wish it had been a decade ago. Oh well, easy venue, good ticket pricing, had a nice night out. She's written so much music that I didn't know about 1/3 of the songs she sang. Friend and I were absolutely mesmerized by the ASL translators. The two of them took turns absolutely rocking the translation. I bet they travel with her as they were on point with her music and lyrics.

I used to get 5% back on gas grocery and drugstores with my amex. Now it’s just groceries with a larger pre spend before it gets to 5% It’s no longer my primary card. Fidelity visa has flat 2% back on all purchases which seems like it would be a better rate than $1K back on 100K total spend, no? I pay that one out of my investment account though so I only put parent or inheritance related purchases on it. My go to card is 1% on all purchases bc a. history, had it since I was in college and b. I’m too lazy to spend a lot of time chasing rewards or closing and opening accounts.

Out of curiosity, I asked TD how much we put on the card last year. We got $2600 back from spending a little over $100k.

DD2 just text me and said she has a laptop for me. Yay! Now, I shouldn't need to get a new phone. I'll be able to use the laptop, for online banking and stuff. That makes me happy.

We thought we might be replacing this roof too soon. I just went out and looked they are replacing a lot of areas of plywood under the roof. They did the whole length of the edge on one side, so definitely not too soon.

I hate people. I just got an email saying a customer is creating another entity to maintenance their vehicles and they need insurance today because they move in tomorrow. Why do people do that?! That's like saying you need a home quote and close tomorrow. There is so much that goes into this. Asking me to complete a 30 day process in hours is insane.

I suggest you might feel wonderful about that!
You have lived long enough to enjoy the fruits of your savings efforts throughout the years. Even if you don't need it, it gives you the opportunity to figure out how to enjoy it.
Mine is coming up in November. I've been taking RMDs monthly since the beginning of the year.

And for the record: I have decided that the weather people here are not nice at all! I don't like any of them anymore. They had the guts to go on air and tell me that this week it will stay in the 90s every day, with the exception of tomorrow when we will be in the triple digits again.
I mean tomorrow is the start of October for crying out loud! This is not nice, not nice at all!

I agree, not nice at all, NastyWoman. When I was there, the weather was so hot! So atypical of the area, and especially atypical for it to be that hot this long into the season.

After breakfast I spent a wonderful hour puttering around the yard trimming and weeding and so on. The squirrels, cardinals and a very vocal woodpecker kept me company. Then it was shower time, lunch, and a stop for more bird seed. I'm going to trim my nails this afternoon. What an exciting life, huh?

My husband has a surprise day off since his place of employment had their power cut last night to fix something or other. He was very excited to pop behind me during a meeting to say hi to my teammates.

Just sent off a payment to pay down some of my principal - not too much - having misgivings since its a very low percent loan, but also want to pay off my mortgage before we get too old. My DH is talking about retiring in the next couple of years - my work has settled down a lot, so there is not a lot of pressure anymore, but paying off the mortgage will give us options. If we buckle down and pay every extra penny we have, we will be able to payoff in the next 3 years. We are still maxing 401Ks, Roths, putting 10K each in ibonds and also investing a small amount in after tax. I don't want anymore exposure to the stock market and given we don't have any pensions, I feel this is the best course for us. Anyways, the money has been sent, so no looking back

Anyways, the money has been sent, so no looking back Yeah, this is why I said I should be paying down the mortgage instead of letting my $$ accumulate in Money Market accounts so we can possibly buy real estate. I ended up with a new car. I was running errands on my lunch and I am very much enjoying it though, so no regrets. I am making extra monthly payments on the mortgage though. Mine is about 2%, and it should pay off before I hit 65, so I am not too worried about it. DH sounds pretty serious about selling his Mustang though, so that + the sale of my existing car should put us ahead of the purchase of my car. He had some Dealer Description of his car that the guy that wants it wants to see, and we don't know what happened to it. I gave it to him a few months ago, and then he decided not to sell the car, and I put the title away, but we are not sure where that info is. It is probably mixed in with the mess of paperwork re: mom's stuff and our tax return which is greatly delayed due to everything with my mom.

To me that's what wise money managing is all about - having options. When a person's financial situation puts their back against the wall, they don't have choices. We all know that life throws curveballs, but if you have some wiggle room life is much more bearable

DH has - finally - sort of found a car he's interested in so I expect a purchase within the next 6 months depending on how badly the longshoremen's strike (if they strike tonight) affects dealer inventory. He wants me to go ahead a buy one too so I'll start looking soon. I truly, totally, HATE car shopping and may hurt a salesperson or five before it's done.

The committee for my 55th class reunion surprised me with some fresh flowers that arrived this morning. I was so surprised.
They said they sent the flowers because of the help I gave them in using Ancestry to find many deceased classmates that no one knew about. It's nice to know what happened to them, but sad they are no longer with us.
The class seems to have had a good time. All these people I remember from 55 years ago and they have white hair, just like me! Most are recognizeable to me. A class of over 500 so I didn't know everyone. It's impossible to in a school that size when I spent several class periods and homeroom every day on the 3rd floor attic area. It's actually been deemed unsafe. That happened when an addition was put on about 10 years after we graduated.
So many of the football players are quite obese now. I had noticed them growing larger at the reunions I attended.
A good friend's crush and his wife drove up from Florida because their flight was canceled due to the hurricane. I think he is the only guy with a full head of hair. He had beautiful hair in high school and it still looks beautiful.

Isn't social security a pension of sorts? Social Security is not a pension. It's a government program where your monthly income is based on what people paid in based on their earnings. Not all positions are covered by Social Security, like government positions. 401K's, Roths, etc are what people save for retirement for themselves and use to pay their monthly expenses. I have a government pension that has an annual COLA because I worked for the federal government. Our pension system is no longer in existence for paying in to for employees. It's just waiting for all of us to die who couldn't be convinced to go to the new system. I had paid in way too many years to get in to a new system. My dad's pension had no COLA, so that $500 per month didn't go very far.
