Just sent off a payment to pay down some of my principal - not too much - having misgivings since its a very low percent loan, but also want to pay off my mortgage before we get too old. My DH is talking about retiring in the next couple of years - my work has settled down a lot, so there is not a lot of pressure anymore, but paying off the mortgage will give us options. If we buckle down and pay every extra penny we have, we will be able to payoff in the next 3 years. We are still maxing 401Ks, Roths, putting 10K each in ibonds and also investing a small amount in after tax. I don't want anymore exposure to the stock market and given we don't have any pensions, I feel this is the best course for us. Anyways, the money has been sent, so no looking back CA may be notoriously expensive to live in, and even more so here in Silicon Valley, but with a paid off mortgage and prop 13 which keeps property taxes under control it really is not bad at all. There is a reason why I can do what I want (for the most part) and still can save living on just SS and a small pension: low housing cost. I had expected to face some major money worries when I retired despite calculating my position over and over again before retiring. As it is my SS is significantly higher than I thought it would be and the only time I worry is when I think I don't worry enough LOL.

Whelp that test I took for the city was apparently not just for the lab tech 1 position it was also for the other city lab job I applied for. I got 40% on it for that job so got rejected from it too today because teh requirement is I get 60% to pass. Back to square one with job hunting. Should probably not consider any city jobs on the table in the near future. I don't think I have it in me anymore to cram all the equations I need back into my head in 24-48 hours before I take the test again. Trying to relearn them now just in case is pointless I will forget them again by the time a new city job I qualify for rolls around again. The two I really wanted the one in clinical research and the other cancer research as a coordinator have completely ghosted me. Trying to make the best of it. I only have three months left to go in this year. I'll just take the job one day at a time and remind myself that at least I am getting paid which allows me to enjoy life outside of work.

Jim Jordan’s doppelgänger was seated behind us at a late lunch. I had a serious double take. I would've been tempted to smack him. That might actually have been Jim Jordan. Just read an article in the paper that he was in town Sat at an event with Sen. Marsha Blackburn and Rep. Diana Harshbarger.

Thank you everyone for the bday wishes! I do appreciate them!
Spent several hours at the hospital with DH. He is recovering well. Surgeon came by and checked him. They have xrayed his lungs and the damaged lung is staying inflated. He hopes he can come home tomorrow. I'm thinking Wednesday but I could be wrong.
My DS2 and I will go back in a bit to hang out with him more. I'm glad he finally agreed to go and get checked out. What I don't understand is why we had to wait a full week before he was willing to do it?

Very East European argument between Jerseyguy (Polish) and Russian housekeeper about lunch Housekeeper wanted him to eat homemade mushroom soup, Jerseyguy wanted no part of the soup but wanted kielbasa Went on for a while but finally she said kielbasa isn’t healthy. A knife in the Polish heart!! Finally he agreed to small bowl of soup and told her it was tasty. When she left the room he said he was afraid she’d put her Russian mother on FaceTime and yell at Jerseyguy in Russian She did that once before when he wasn’t eating well at all. Russian mom yelled and he started eating! They both agree pierogis are good fried in olive oil with sour cream ( really? That’s what they both consider healthy)

It's booby squishing day. Hope it was uneventful. Sort of - as it did not happen. I had the time incorrect. Rescheduled for Saturday morning. They could have fit me in later today, but work travel planned.

It sounds like your housekeeper was an excellent choice, and I am glad for you and jerseyguy that she’s been so helpful when you have needed her. Jerseyguy not wanting her to call her Mom to fuss at him again is funny, but also sweet because it shows that she actually cares about him and his health.

You've waited this long, you can wait another 24 hours - or drive yourself.

He FINALLY went to the hospital to get checked out, and ended up needing multiple bypass surgery. It's gotta be a guy thing. They make themselves keep going until they can't.

chiver78 can you post a link for the salmon oil for the dogs? My mom said her lab has been digging at his skin a lot. The tags jangling wakes her up.

It’s a guy thing for sure. My uncle had high blood pressure and didn’t know it. He just popped pain pills for the headaches. The high blood pressure caused kidney failure and he still didn’t realize there was a problem. When he so much fluid overload that the fluid in his lungs was causing breathing problems, my aunt still had to drag him to get medical attention.

It's not just men.
My mom didn't tell my dad she was having arm pain because she didn't want to scare him.
I don't think I repeated that to him and if I didn't it's going with me to my own grave. He doesn't need that burden.
I was so upset because if she had told one of us, especially me earlier I could have put it together. As part of working at UNMC all employees had to be trained to recognize potential stroke or heart attack.
Would it have made a difference? IDK arm pain in women is usually not one of the first symptoms. The rest aligned awfully close with fucking COVID and since it was at the forefront neither me or my brother who has had EMT training figured it out.
DH may think I'm paranoid and I'll admit it did go into overdrive with mom's death but it will never be said I'm not extremely vocal about how I'm feeling.

My husband had told the urologist the year before he had a weak stream when urinating. they gave him some pills, not sure if he was supposed to go in for a test or not. I didn't go to that visit as he has a tendency to downplay his issues. But I remember him telling his primary that a couple of times. don't know if it was he or hubs who let things go an extra year. But it also got all mixed up with that annual wellness deal medicare does. I did it once and got out of it all it did was confuse things for me of what I was to do and why. Well it did hubs too, the thing is pointless if you have a primary. I told him to drop that, I will make sure he does up here. But he was never sick and he has been really good about following up with everything and doing what they tell him. I'm actually surprised, but he is.
I think they have our roof done, they are cleaning up out there now. They replaced quite a bit of plywood up there. And the one guy said at one time there was a ridge vent or something along the top and they must have taken it out when they added the garage and room and said it left a hole up there. I don't know if it was a hole in the plywood underneath, but I'm thinking its where the inspector saw the nails sticking up, probably nothing to nail in to. They also hand nailed it all, no nail gun. Hubs said that really makes for a better job if they don't get the pressure on the gun right, Not enough and doesn't nail good, too much and it cuts the roofing and it comes loose. I think we will get the same quality as the furnace job I hope. I like this company.
Assembled my shoe racks, each will hold 18 pair of shoes, they are a heavy vinyl with wood covered shelves, but seem sturdy. They fit in the spaces nicely. Getting one for hubs, shorter and DD for her shoes, then all that will be off the floor. Trying to neaten areas up with storage items now. Also going to declutter some more as I go along. And I need to go on painting doors and trim, not my favorite thing to do but will.

Those nasty weather people really don't know when to stop. Now they forecast three days (starting tomorrow) into the triple digits and the rest of the week skirting that number. It is 94° right now at 6pm. Grumble, grumble, grumble. I see a rollaway bed in the living room in my near future

I'm up way too late after the day I've had. Currently watching Forensic Files about the Coors heir who went missing. I should be sleeping because tomorrow will be even more. At least I can make my own hours, but I really need to sleep.

Both my dad and TD were/are pretty much always on top of health issues. In fact, when TD and I got off the last cruise sounding like we needed to be in a TB ward, he was the one who went to the doctor. The only prescription he got was for an inhaler….which when he used it made his coughing much, much worse. I have no idea what we had. It wasn’t covid. Neither of us felt sick, just had this horrible cough that left us gasping for air.

Good morning, health-aware invisipeeps, maintaining your and your family's wellness to the best of your abilities. Welcome to Tuesday, the first day of October. I hope your day is a happy one. I hope no one and nothing pees in your Cheerios. I took a stab yesterday at clearing out the guest room of our photography supplies and empty boxes. Will continue today until it's done, plus sweep off the front porch and hang some pictures. Every day I will be doing more up until Saturday in preparation for the birthday bash on Sunday. We also went out to eat yesterday; it was delicious. I had shrimp scampi. DH had chicken fettucine alfredo. We shared a bottle of riesling. I also went to the grocery store yesterday and bought some ingredients for the marinades, and some things for DD who is still feeling poorly. She is looking for work and in the meantime signed up for some gig work as a flu shot nurse for a company that staffs these events in companies. So she'll work some this month, at least. Yesterday's sunrise was lovely, and the before dawn sky was fantastic with a red cloud leaking into the bay water below.
