Bawling all over again. The vet sent us a sympathy card. Oh no! I'm so sorry. What happened? Right now I'm trying to explain to my 18 year old cat why he has to take his thyroid medicine and not to spit his pills out. I'm finding pills all over the house. He's not listening. We had to put our almost 17 year old siamese down last Wed.

OK. This will be long. I appreciate feedback. Here's the details: The job pays about 10K less a year than I currently make. That is more than a 10% pay cut. There is possibility for pay increase down the road. Raises are generally 2% a year. Benefits all stay the same. My pension is based on my 3 highest years of pay, not the last three years I work. I've confirmed that 3 times. I have no way to move in my unit. There is no moving up. There is no lateral. I have tried since Fall of 2021 to figure out a way to move laterally, and it's not happening. In the next level of my organization, there is no where to move to. There is no change in leadership in my unit in the foreseeable future. Which means, no vision, no direction. Just watching products be run into the ground (one has lost almost a half mil of profit in the past 3ish years) without any changes. I do not know what this new job will bring in terms of mobility within the unit and within the organization. They want me. And I want them. I don't know how exactly my paycheck will shake out. With a lower income, we'll get more in our tax refund. It also could look better for DD1 in terms of scholarships. Here are the menu of options for bridging the income gap: 1. I'm working on a consulting opportunity. I can't do it now, because of my current work situation. I am having a chat with folks involved on friday. Note: I will have to give the OK to check references before I know if the consulting gig is official. I may not get the consulting job. If this contact does fall through, I could have other options down the line. 2. We ask for scholarship money for tuition for the kids's 4k-8 school We won't get the full bill covered, but it would help. 3. We use some of leftover 529 money to cover tuition for the kids'. Note: tuition is 10K a year, total. This is only for 2 years, before the peanut goes to high school. Also, note, we might be able to use some combination of 2 and 3. 4. My second job could be enough to fill most of the gap. Especially if I continue to stay full. 5. We can pay off our mortgage. We almost have enough Roth contributions to cover it all. We could try to scrape up the cash. We could ask to borrow the rest from family. This would free up about $400 a month. Probably half of what we would need to cover the gap. 6. DH has already signaled that he's willing to find some additional part time work to fill in the gap. 7. We can ask DS to start contributing to the household. Even if we ask for $500 a month, he'd still be saving 1.5K a month. I know it's not his 2K a month clip. If you had all of these options, would you go ahead and take the job? I already know what my answer is. I committed myself to a bigger paycut just for a deck, so yeah, I wouldn't think twice to $800/month to not be miserable all the time.
How does that work?

giramomma generally one's best raises come when one changes jobs. But, I understand, you want out of your current job. I would tell them that you REALLY want to accept the job, for X/Y/Z reasons, and you're considering it. But are they aware that you'd be earning 10K less? Ask them if they can make an effort towards bridging that 10K gap.
Even if they give you 2-3K more, it's a win. If they give you 4-5K more, even better! But you need to tell them/ask! Good luck!!! ETA: Do they even KNOW it would be a reduction in salary for you?! Have you even told them?! If you don't tell them, they can't know. They're not psychic! So tell them, and see what they have to say.

BTW. DD1 is very impressed at how quickly you all provided input.

I told her it was kinda like wife swap. She giggled.

Also, I think taking the paycut now is cheaper than me trying go back to retrain to something else.

There is no negotiation. It's pretty much take it or leave it.
Remember this is not the private sector.
Once I've proven myself, there could be bonuses and pay raises.

OK. Thanks for answering. I'm glad they know. In that case, I'd still take it, because you really do need to get out. Good for you for getting a new job, and trying to negotiate.

The other thing is that once I know how things run in this different area of my organization, I become more attractive to other jobs in this area. Future pivots won't be so drastic, if I decide to do it.
And honestly, I'm kind of excited that I have no idea what lies ahead. It sounds like a great adventure.

How does that work? Well, apparently I have to pay for it! Damn them for not letting me know as we went. Which, unless I raid my Roth, means loans (aka paycut)...probably until I retire.
I might get creative, we'll see.

Which is why i hated taking vacation when i had my own office. I would work twice as hard two weeks before vacation, 2 weeks after vacation, and often field emails and texts while i was on vacation. I must have really been gone a while bc I remember you having your own office. I'm guessing that's no longer the case? Nope. I work for the state.

well, ignoring the elephant in the room. was nice while it lasted. 😕🤦♀️ around 630ish, some small booms started, it was still daylight! wtf. anyway, LD started pacing. so I gave him a CBD treat, and Punk got one too since she was right there. maybe a half hour later, I'd packed it all up and came inside. we've been downstairs ever since. A/C is cranked and the basement French doors are closed. we can't hear shit down here, which is exactly what he needs this weekend. I fucking hate people.

I took a jump off the high dive we'll see if it works.
I decided to just plug "science jobs" into Google to see what would come up.
It came up with an early career environmental scientist.
Pay is higher than mine currently. Doesn't require specific environmental science experience.
What caught my eye and I made sure to get into my resume is they want someone to assist with PFAS research which we have been looking at in my current lab and I was part of an experiment involving it.
So we'll see. It sounded promising IDK if it will go in a black hole or not.
I think I'll try Google again it can pull across multiple search engines and sites that would take me forever.

I think everyone who is looking for a new job now needs to rub giramomma's head for luck. Let's see if our gang can switch to something they all like better.

I did some work again. I went through upper kitchen cabinets. I filled 4 trash bags to be dumped. 2 boxes of spices and items for cooking to be shipped. 3 boxes of food and items to go to sale or blessing box, some from my pantry. I'm making sure the top shelves are cleaned out. I'm putting the items I'm going to use for cooking the next few days in one spot. I'm cleaning inside as I am going so I don't have to go back and do that. A lot more stuff is going to go, that's for sure. Hubs said I have plenty of time,no I don't We have 2 more docs appointments and a hair appointment that will eat up time. And a sale will eat a day or two plus prep time. It will speed b

If Disney owns the Muppets does that mean Miss Piggy qualities as a Disney Princess?

Good morning, insightful invisipeeps, cheering for giramomma while preparing for your own adventures. Welcome to Thursday, the 4th of July the world over. I hope this day is not painful for your pets but offers tremendous picnic fare including ice cream, of course. We were very rudely awakened at about midnight by the smoke detector in the bedroom blaring. One was also triggered in the basement. Have no idea what it's about but they have gone off twice more in the hours since. I was thinking maybe low battery but the one in the basement is quite new; I just placed it when our hot water tank was replaced last year. Can't reach the one in the bedroom. That room has a cathedral ceiling so the detector is maybe 14' off the ground. I do not have an extension ladder. Not sure what to do. We can't do nothing, obviously. And it just may possibly be that they're detecting something that's triggering the alarms. I wish it were not a holiday. Should I call the fire department? Or what? Aargh. Poor Franklin the Dog just wants to get away from the noise. In the meantime I've made a key lime pie for today's festivities and will bake a peach bundt cake, too. DSis is providing hamburgers, hotdogs, potato and regular salad. YDB is bringing the shrimp. It will be good. Just need some sangria. The actual sunrise yesterday was not terribly interesting but its prelude was beautiful, ethereal in pastel colors:

Phew. Franklin the Dog and I got back from the beach and the alarm had stopped. I think it just went completely out of battery. Good thing.

This will be a nice long, mostly lazy, weekend. Might make a pass through the kitchen cabinets to top off the charity box. Might run out later and grab some Maryland blue crabs.
After tapping out early and leaving DH to redress his foot on his own most of this week, I stayed up last night to watch the O's west coast game. When it was over he asked me if I would redress his foot. I thought he might have gotten used to doing it himself, but it must be difficult for him because he very rarely asks anyone for help with anything.

Yeah...not the same Gira I've "known" for many years. And! Last night I looked at DH and said, "You know, we just should go ahead on spending the $300 on a weekend away. We'll just tack it on to our heloc. It's not going to make a bit of difference in 5 years." And I *still* might even get that quilt kit I have been lusting after. DD1 saw it and liked it.

You go, giramomma! Life and work should not be a threadbare misery fighting for scraps of approval. It is like you've got a new lease on life.
