So the consensus is my career is ruined, they don't like me and will make my life miserable if I go to HR and I put my job at risk? What exactly changes? I am looking but in the mean time I have bills to pay. We aren't quite in a position where I can walk off. But we're close enough if they fire me so be it. We will be fine and I'll wait tables for a but again. I'm done being scared. I'm done having panic attacks. I either take what little self respect I have left or I should at this point just roll over because life refuses to get better. If that is wrong so be it. Again what exactly do I have to lose? My pride? My sanity? A promotion? A good relationship with my boss? A positive review? I'll never work at this company again? I don't use Mt management as a reference which will somehow cause me to never work at all? Not my first rodeo with crappy managers. I've never had it stop me getting a different job. Seriously. There is nothing anymore. Might as well go big or go home. If you can quit and do something else, (wait tables, work at target) why don't you just go that route now? Quit and do that. Resigning for a different job is always perceived differently than being fired. And frankly, that's what most people would prefer. There's less paperwork. One thing I learned, actually, is that my perception of the situation wasn't really the same as others. I was perceiving things as Defcon 1 and well, it wasn't. That is exactly a me issue. In retrospect, even what I experienced was a nothingburger according to HR. You are spinning. I am also not advocating that you just lay down and take it. Maybe you will be lucky and won't need to use anyone from your current job as a reference. For me it's about 50-50. Some jobs want current manager, some are happy with previous manager. There is no "Please don't contact my current employer" checkbox. I have no choice if I want to move to something different. What do you want to get out of your talk with HR? I would at least come in with actionable items. You want your supervisor to get some training. You want a third party in your 1:1 because you feel unsafe. You want real data to support the feedback you are getting within x amount of days of being given the feedback. The fact that you are talking about life not getting better makes me wonder if your current mental health management is working for you. If your therapy and/or meds isn't working, you need to try something else. I'm team Get Fired because at least you will get unemployment in the meantime. I was let go from a toxic job several years ago and collected UE for a few months until I got something else. When it came up in job interviews, I just said we weren't a good fit for each other (which wasn't false). But you have to do what's best for you and that's also feasible right now.

It's going to be a long summer here with the newcomers in the neighborhood. One was chatting with some of us oldtimers about storm prep and asked the usual "what do I do to get ready?" We ran through the routine - water, batteries, tarps, manual can opener etc. And then someone mentioned being sure we knew which houses are vacant. New person ask why, and we said those are the trash cans we fill with the spoiled food from the refrigerators. New guy said, "Why would we have spoiled food, the power will be back on the next day, won't it?" We just stared at him in dumbfounded silence. Too bad stupid is not an event in Paris this summer

Ugh! I cannot even make up stuff this dumb. I ordered exactly 4 items from Kohl's, and found out they'll be arriving in 4 different packages, but all within about 4 days of each other. Really? I hate wasted resources (extra packaging, gasoline to deliver, etc.)

That's where I leave it and I am happy to provide coworker references and HR can confirm I was employed. They don't need to talk to my manager. That has only not worked for me once with that weird interview I went to a few weeks ago. I work with someone that knows that manager and he said I dodged a bullet. That manager is a lifer, his very first job ever was at said company and cannot fathom why anyone would want to leave their employer. It explained the very odd line of questioning like "Well if everything was magically fixed would you stay at your job you currently have?" Well yeah if they gave me a raise that reflected 11% inflation, promoted me to the level I should be and all the managers were awesome but I live in the real world. People leave jobs for all sorts of reasons. Which I explained very validly about salary increase, benefit changes, title increase and out growing a job. He looked at me like I had three heads. He just kept grilling me about every single job I had and why did I want to leave. So yeah I am not missing out there. UNMC would be very hard for me to get back into they don't do external candidates often and I am not sure I want to go back anyhow unless I could find a non-grant funded position. Even if I could I am still going to run into the problem of the state doesn't want to approve so much as a routine 3% raise a year and would need to leave again anyhow. And even there I could get around it because I worked with enough people there who speak very highly of me. That would carry more weight than random people I worked with outside the university. Especially that I am published under two of them.

NomoreDramaQ1015 I don't necessarily think that it's a bad idea to involve HR. You'll now have a paper trail and, after sitting through a lot of discrimination training, it seems as if retaliation is worse than the actual offence. Most HR departments want to avoid being sued and allowing retaliation is a good way to have that happen. Cutting her loose is an easier way to make sure retaliation doesn't happen. Employees are disposable. Leadership, not so much. The higher up you are the more egregious your conduct has to be to get you fired. Peons are always the first to go. I had a manager from hell and I invoked HR. She intensified the bullying until I snapped one day and yelled at her. I was promptly fired. Her problem was that I was basically running that team and hid most of her incompetence. Once I was gone, stuff started falling apart. Employees started quitting right and left. It still took 20 employees quitting citing her as the reason why before she got fired. The only time you should complain about your boss is in an exit interview.

Despite middle-of-the-night insomnia, up at 6 and showered. I gassed up the car, grabbed a kolache and we were off to Whole Foods before the crowds. I am very jealous!

I'm tired but have to keep going. I'm going to pack some more. DIL wants all the items, dolls and everything hubs got in Africa. I'm glad as I'm losing one of my display cases. Not sure where I was going to put those or our photos. We may have to eventually buy something. They have a lot of masks from all over, hubs sent a few and these will be a nice add. I have women dolls in costume, really pretty, carved animals and items like that.
Went to the store, they had the first local corn on the cob, got 6 to add to my BLT's. Also one of the first cantaloupe's it tastes wonderful. They raise a lot of wonderful tasting vegetables and fruit here in the summer. I am full of canteloupe now. I'm the only one here that likes it. Hubs will eat some watermelon. DD used to like both but doesn't now, I have no idea why.
DD has a wondering eye again. She had it when little and they had prisms in her glasses. The one has been fine for years but the last couple of months I've seen it going to the outside of her eye. I'm going to have to have an opthamalogist look at it and see if they can help her again. I'm wondering what has caused it now.
Need to finish DD's closet and the underside of the entertainment center. This packing, and sorting, and purging is getting old and I'm far from done.
Tomorrow cleaning at the dentist for me and a filling for DD.

I have a lovely little Smokey flopped down beside me. He was in bed with me snuggling this morning after hubs fed him. My spoiled baby. Tigger has thrown up about 3 times today, but I'm betting he has been eating grass again. He sheds so much and cleans himself so I'm sure he swallows a lot of it. I need to brush him daily again. Not had time with everything going on. I'm about to fall asleep for a bit.

I also managed to gain a life long customer I'm told. The lady was super frustrated with her current agent. She needed an umbrella and they kept putting her off. They finally gave her a $20K option so she came here in a tizzy. I pulled the coverage out of thin air for $2,500 so she transferred her other coverages over. I noticed she was paying a lot with who she was with, so I marketed the other coverages since it was renewal time anyway. Saved another $40K with better coverage. Since I managed to do that I also got the coverages on a sister company they own. The producer was quite pleased with me. I hope he remembers that the next time I screw something up.

yum. I bought some sweet corn the other day, looking forward to cooking that on the grill over the holiday weekend!
now that I'm more mobile and driving again, I'm trying to plan long weekends to go visit friends before the summer is over. and I'm looking at the vacation hack memes I saw on FB today, where I can get stretches of 9-12 days for minimal PTO usage over holidays and long weekends. I may not travel for all of it, but I definitely see myself taking more time off this fall.

The best one was he told me he didn't even care if I could do the job he just wanted to know if I had the right personality. Run! Run away! I mean personality should be a part of it but shouldn't you at least make sure I know how to use Microsoft because there are still people out there who can't. Personality can't fix if I don't know how to use a computer.

Too bad stupid is not an event in Paris this summer Lol, that made me laugh. In new people's defense, the longest power outage I ever experienced was roughly 12 hours. Longest power outage since we've been in our house has been three hours. Intellectually, I know power goes out for a good long while when hurricanes and other such disasters hit, but I'd probably ask a dumb question or two before I knew what I was saying.

We were almost 2 weeks powerless after the last big one, but I'm cautiously optimistic it might be less now. So much depends on how many tornadoes are embedded in a hurricane because those are what take down the big transmission towers like the derecho did about 6-7 weeks ago. We routinely have outages of 4-8 hours when someone's tree drops on lines. We're also facing a problem if we get heavy rains from Beryl because there's a dam failure watch for the Lake Livingston Dam which supplies 70% of Houston's water. They are working to stabilize it but...

Before I started working from home full-time my designated work from home days were Tuesday and Friday. With all those Monday holidays it felt like an extra cushy break not being in the office for a long stretch.

We just had a whole house installed last month. I feel some peace of mind about that. now if we could get decent cell service out here, I would really feel better. All of the major players service maps show a donut hole of little to no coverage right where we are. We have to depend on piggybacking the WIFI for cell phones. If the wifi goes, we are screwed for communication. There is no such thing as hard wired phones anymore.

First time this year we have reached triple digits. I think this is quite enough so can we be done now*? I don't even want to go to a mall or something as my car would be out in the sun and too hot to get back into...
*Tomorrow has been forecasted as the hottest day of the week. I'm not looking forward to that - even going to the pool will be too hot

When we moved to FL our nearest neighbors were kind enough to warn us that the longest power outage they ever had was 2 weeks. I did appreciate knowing that, as a newbie. She was originally a Northerner like me, so she was also kind enough to warn me about what insects to avoid, like fire ants. In time we discovered we had a nest of those nasty things in our backyard.

Lol, that made me laugh. In new people's defense, the longest power outage I ever experienced was roughly 12 hours. Longest power outage since we've been in our house has been three hours. Intellectually, I know power goes out for a good long while when hurricanes and other such disasters hit, but I'd probably ask a dumb question or two before I knew what I was saying. we were out for 10 days with "Hurricane" Sandy. that sounds right, or maybe it was Irene? in any case, my old townhouse was in a really shitty area for outages. and we were always the last ones to get power back on. in an area of MA where the "worst cases" were out for 2-3 days, my complex was out for 5-6. I remember whatever year that was, I emptied my freezer into my parents' multiple times that year.

Sandy was the 12 hour outage for us. Obviously SEPA wasn't going to be as hard hit with that, but still. I was out of the country when Ida hit my town and flooded an entire neighborhood but I'm pretty sure our power stayed on. I don't know why we are always so lucky, plenty of surrounding areas lose power for a couple of days, but we've always been spares the worst. I'm going to knock on the biggest piece of wood I can find.

I need to take time off too. I'm sitting at 115 hours of PTO that I need to take off before the end of the year. I'm going to take a week off to move, but that still leaves a ton of time left. Make that 2 weeks to move. Moving is tiring and you want to build in a few days to recuperate

I may not travel for all of it, but I definitely see myself taking more time off this fall. I always take extra PTO around our paid holidays. Give me all the days off! Before I started working from home full-time my designated work from home days were Tuesday and Friday. With all those Monday holidays it felt like an extra cushy break not being in the office for a long stretch. M used to do Tues/Fri for her WFH days, as long as I've known her, for that same reason. it's sound logic! as far as holiday time? we also have a company shutdown between xmas/new years. so this is all on top of all of that. I just checked in with a friend in FL that I'd been looking at spending a long weekend with this past weekend......until I wiped out on the stairs. her kid starts school mid-August, but she said that's not a limiter in planning a visit. I think I'm looking at early Sept, around my birthday. I can take four vacation days to get 9 days off in a row. I can plan travel dates around flight pricing, either $ or points.

I went fine. I do not want her fired. That is not realistic and would be me coming across as petty. I went with AAM advice and laid out why I feel things aren't working and what I would like to see done.
I said I fully admit I am not a perfect employee. I admit I make mistakes. I will own my performance was not top notch during the first half of this fiscal year and that is enough to judge me warranting a four for this review then so be it. I disagree, that has been noted, that is what I wanted in that regard.
What I want to change is I want to be treated like a person. I said it is very frustrating that I am held to a much higher standard than the rest of the lab and that my mistakes "destroy" the entire lab whereas others mistakes don't. I said there is supposed to be redundancy in the process and while I am fine getting in trouble for a mistake on my step but if it gets to the analyst and they don't bother to do due diligence that should be addressed too.
I shouldn't be told I ruined their productivity. We both failed. Yet for them it is "just a mistake" for me it is further proof I can't handle my job.
I said I want real time feedback. I said what seems to happen is I make a minor mistake and instead of "hey you did X can you correct it" it builds and builds and becomes yet another brick in the "DQ can't do her job" wall. That then gets thrown at my head from what to me seems like out of nowhere. I am not asking to never be corrected.
I said I also want proof. I said if the food scientists are upset I want to read the comments so I know exactly where I need to improve. Not just be told to trust my manager they dislike me and I need to smile more. That's not proper feedback. While it will never happen I would prefer tracking. I said if for example our error rate is expected to be 2% well if I am 10% that is obviously a big problem and I need to really hunker down. But if I am 2.5%? Does that warrant me being drug through the mud? I will NEVER be 0% that is not realistic and I am tired of being pressured to be so. Especially when others are not expected to be the same.
I said since we don't have those things or proper benchmarks regarding roles it seems to be up to whatever my manager's mood is or what the department feels like should be my job. Which makes it impossible for me to know how to perform because the goal posts change with the wind.
I want concrete benchmarks so I can actually see and have documented I moved the needle. Not just depend on her deciding I moved it because that never happens.
And I said I would like a more balanced review. I said it gets really tiring to always be beat down. Surely I must be doing SOMETHING right to be employed almost 3 years. I said that is an overall lab management issue not unique to mine.
I had examples I made sure to jot it down in a notebook. It also helped that after my email she wrote questions in direct response to help guide the conversation.
I want a better working relationship with management. That's all I want. If the lab is going to function we have to figure out a way to get along. I said it's bad for my morale and it's bad for my coworkers morale because they don't feel like they can help if I need assistance or ask questions if covering for me because they know I will get in trouble for it. That's BAD.
Probably will have a meeting with HR to mediate. I think that is the best route to take. I'll let her know next week because I was stressed in the meeting I confessed that this was really hard and I have had a lot of conflicting advice on how I should handle things so I wasn't ready to make a decision yet. I said my main goal of today was to take the first step to get my side out there to someone other than my manager.
