I need to take time off too. I'm sitting at 115 hours of PTO that I need to take off before the end of the year. I'm going to take a week off to move, but that still leaves a ton of time left. what is this "unused PTO" you speak of? I don't know what that is. One thing I'll always do is use up ALLLLL my PTO that year! IDC if I'm sitting around the house doing nothing, I'm taking it! LOL The goal is always end the year with zero hours. I have the one week (35 hours) we're allowed to carryover, that's going to be a nice check when I finally retire and I have a couple of months saved in my extended leave bank. I'm using all my time! I have to check my balance on Monday, I know I have 200+ hours left but I always take two weeks on in December so I'm hoarding a little.

I am so jealous of whatever your electric company has going on in your area. the whole house generator here is a large part of why I bid over asking price for a house that has had so many issues since I moved in. the generator hasn't puked, yet. We just had a whole house installed last month. I feel some peace of mind about that. now if we could get decent cell service out here, I would really feel better. All of the major players service maps show a donut hole of little to no coverage right where we are. We have to depend on piggybacking the WIFI for cell phones. If the wifi goes, we are screwed for communication. There is no such thing as hard wired phones anymore. that generator will help, hugely. I have that setup here. the only thing that's knocking out my network is if the chest freezer trips the circuit it shares with the network equipment. I really need to bring an electrician out again to look at that.

My oldest passed her driving test. We just told her she was having an individual lesson. Instructor said she was the driver she was use to this time, vs the nut case she was the last time. Okay she did not say nut case. Youngest had a doctor appointment today, she has stopped growing, she is 5'7 and same as last year. SO she pretty much stopped growing at 12, same as her sister.
Tomorrow I pick up the rental for the trip up to Michigan to visit my aunt. A, myself, and the kids. We are driving 1/2 way and seeing the Aquarium in Detroit, and then the rest of the way to where my aunt lives in the upper.

We had a landline for the longest time because of power outages and sometimes it being hard to get reception. I should probably have them fix that it's still bundled into our internet because it really drove down hte price to bundle. It would be handy to have with all the storms. Our phone lines are underground so they don't get disrupted during storms.

yum. I bought some sweet corn the other day, looking forward to cooking that on the grill over the holiday weekend! now that I'm more mobile and driving again, I'm trying to plan long weekends to go visit friends before the summer is over. and I'm looking at the vacation hack memes I saw on FB today, where I can get stretches of 9-12 days for minimal PTO usage over holidays and long weekends. I may not travel for all of it, but I definitely see myself taking more time off this fall. I need to take time off too. I'm sitting at 115 hours of PTO that I need to take off before the end of the year. I'm going to take a week off to move, but that still leaves a ton of time left. I have 208 hours to take yet.i need to get on that.

If it costs anything like the ridiculous price for crappy satellite internet, that would be a big ole no. We don’t have the satellite internet anymore, thank goodness! The local power company started up a fiber optic internet division just before we bought the house. It was being installed in sections throughout the region. Our section was supposed to go live in summer 2021. I was thrilled when we went live ahead of schedule in Dec 2020. We bought the house in summer 2020. I was happy to kick the satellite service to the curb and had no problem paying the early termination fee. I kid you not, one project took 6 or 7 HOURS to upload completed work to the server.

It's going to be a long summer here with the newcomers in the neighborhood. One was chatting with some of us oldtimers about storm prep and asked the usual "what do I do to get ready?" We ran through the routine - water, batteries, tarps, manual can opener etc. And then someone mentioned being sure we knew which houses are vacant. New person ask why, and we said those are the trash cans we fill with the spoiled food from the refrigerators. New guy said, "Why would we have spoiled food, the power will be back on the next day, won't it?" We just stared at him in dumbfounded silence. Too bad stupid is not an event in Paris this summer Lol, that made me laugh. In new people's defense, the longest power outage I ever experienced was roughly 12 hours. Longest power outage since we've been in our house has been three hours. Intellectually, I know power goes out for a good long while when hurricanes and other such disasters hit, but I'd probably ask a dumb question or two before I knew what I was saying. I was dumb as a red brick when I moved here in 1964. No clue about hurricane. Then Betsy got in the Gulf and hit NO, then Camille followed, then Fredrick hit. What brand generator do you have? We’re considering getting one after we move to the new house as they do have power outages there. We’re on the same grid as the hospital where we are now so rarely have a power outage longer than a couple of hours.

We put in whole house propane Generac generator after Sandy. We had a whole house diesel but it broke down after 3 days during Sandy. We have well water so no electricity no water to even flush the toilets. Majority of houses here have generators as power goes out maybe once or twice /month usually not more than 12 hrs
We get bad phone reception at home either for cells or our home VOIP phones. Thinking of going to ATT and asking about getting a hard wired home phone again. You know the commercial - can you hear me? Can you hear me yet? Folks on top of roof trying

I have coworkers that regularly have what we call “must leave” at the end of the year, which means that if they don’t take it at the end of the year, they lose it. And some of them lose it, instead of using it. I don’t understand. Historically, we could carry over up to 440 hours of vacation leave into the next year, and anything over that, if you didn’t use it, you lost it. Since COVID, it is now 520 hours, I think. I always felt like I was doing good if I carried over 8 hours or more lol. But vacation leave is separate from sick leave, we can carry over an indefinite amount of sick leave during our entire career. So even if you use all of your vacation leave, you can still have sick leave available to use for health issues.

There are fireworks happening. One cat has taken to the basement for cover.
It is 5:44 PM. It's not even close to being dark.

But how many mistakes am I gonna have to clean up when I come back? Plus, just one day off usually produces at least 100 unread emails to wade through when I get back. It's almost not worth it.

Make that 2 weeks to move. Moving is tiring and you want to build in a few days to recuperate It would take me a month to catch up at work if I did that.

Need to get tires for my Tesla. I’ve never bought tires for any car except for replacing a flat. I see Michelin and Pirelli in tire stores near us and seems like off brand? kumno?Any recommendations for or against? National stores or local? Guess depends on tires but front seems pretty low on ridges ( not sure what this is called) and back seem better. Rotate? Have 38000 miles maybe all 4 new? I’ll be keeping this car for a long time!

I've driven Japanese cars for a long time, and Yokohama tires are recommended outside of the US where Michelins are recommended here. look at that brand.

I wasn't expecting any noise that time of day, and I actually jumped. After dark, it can be anytime. Someone nearby was shooting off fireworks after midnight last night. DH slept through it, but I didn't.

I am the only person in my group who knows anything and I do not want to have clean stuff up. Plus we both WFH and do not have small kids, so taking a minute for a doctor's visit does not equal burning a full day.

But it all eventually got back to normal. Look back now as an adventure in making do. ![](https://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff155/JiminiChristmas/ymamsmiles/rofl.gif) Sorry for rambling. Just dredged up memories. A couple years after Mister and I were together, a big storm happened and even though we lived almost 30 minutes apart, both our homes lost power for several days, as did much of the local area. We were at my house at first, and the first day without power we were both off work, so I tried to be positive and I said “it’s an adventure”, and I fired up my charcoal grill for us to cook breakfast on it in a cast iron skillet. That’s how we cooked dinner too. Then we used the grill to cook some of the meat in my freezer. I had a cooler that we’d filled with ice, but it could only hold so much, and then there was the question of how we could reheat the cooked food. Then, while taking a shower by candle light (the water heater is gas), Mister ran out of the bathroom covered in soap suds because a big ass waterbug/cockroach/whatever they are, startled him, crawling up the wall during his shower. The “adventure” had already worn off for me by then, and that was my last straw. The next day, we went to his home to shower, and used the last of the lukewarm water in his electric water heater. The water was cold before we were done. The next day we showered at his parents’ house. They were out of town, but their house still had power. But we didn’t stay there, we just took showers and took a break after cleaning up behind ourselves, then left. All of the food at my house was a loss by then, so we were wandering around every day, trying to find restaurants that had power and were open, so we could eat. Both of us carrying backpacks with necessities for wherever we landed that night. Mister worked evenings at the time, and I remember being in my bedroom at night with candles burning so I could at least see a little, and very uneasy because I had the windows open because it was so hot outside and inside, and being so scared that a critter with many legs, 4 legs, or 2 legs might try to come through the windows, while I waited for Mister to get off work. After it stopped being an adventure, that was honestly more difficult for me than the first time I lost power for several days at my house, when Hurricane Elvis came through. That time, it was also hot as hell, AND I had children to tend to, but I also had my big dogs that were protective of me, my children and our home, so I felt a lot safer even if I had every window and door in my house open, vs when I was home alone while Mister was at work when it happened again.

We can roll over one year of vacation a year.
I ended up doing that since Covid. When you are stuck in your house with your kids, and school is shut down for a year..there's like no way to vacation.
Taking PTO, but staying in the same small house with the same people in your face 24/7. No. I'd argue what's the point.
Now, my workload is such that I really can't afford to take time off.
I totalled up my work, I'm now doing 6x time work I did when I started. Sure, some of it is due to better technology over the past 2 decades....
I wish I was joking that it's not worth working 12 hour days at my dayjob a week prior to my vacation or the week after taking 5 days off. The scramble to make up the work-completely negates the vacation.
If I need change of scenery, that is easily accomplished by working in a different venue.

I am thankful. We just went from 2" of rain overnight down to less than an inch.

what is this "unused PTO" you speak of? I don't know what that is. One thing I'll always do is use up ALLLLL my PTO that year! IDC if I'm sitting around the house doing nothing, I'm taking it! LOL I just don't have time most of the time. I'm the only transportation AM in our office. The other ones don't know anything about trucking. Can a non trucking AM and producer limp through it while I'm gone? Yes. But how many mistakes am I gonna have to clean up when I come back? Plus, just one day off usually produces at least 100 unread emails to wade through when I get back. It's almost not worth it. Even though I mostly hate my job, one of the perks is making decent money while not having any responsibility besides doing my job when I am there. Early in my career, I use to worry about things getting done if I’m not there to do my job, but years of being told how expendable I am and having that beat into my head, made me realize that it was true. Years ago, after a coworker with over 30 years of service DIED on the clock, in a stall in a restroom where he’d gone to try to get himself together because he wasn’t feeling well a manager said, in reference to his death, that the job is going to go on, even if we die. That was SO fucked up to me and made me SO mad, because how could you even say something like that, even if that’s how you think?! But it was indeed said, and I will never forget that that is how us peons are viewed. So if I take some scheduled time off or am too sick to go to work (or my children were really sick when they were minors), it stopped being a concern years ago, about how me taking off work when I schedule it or really need to even if it’s not scheduled ahead of time, affects my workplace. Even if I die, they won’t skip a beat, so why would I not choose to keep myself ALIVE and HEALTHY, over my damn job? But there is also the thing where I am so expendable that I can be off work for legitimate reasons and whenever I do go back, whether it’s after days, weeks, or even months, there are not mountains of work piled up, waiting for me to deal with. So me being so easily replaced because I am so unimportant and have so little value, works both ways as far as I am concerned, and makes my decisions to take care of me first when I need to choose, not even really be a question, or a decision to wrestle with.

What brand generator do you have? We’re considering getting one after we move to the new house as they do have power outages there. We’re on the same grid as the hospital where we are now so rarely have a power outage longer than a couple of hours. it's a Generac, 1100kW. Are you sure? That seems an awful lot. I know bupkes about generators so I actually went and checked my power bill and that is more than 5x* what I use in an entire month. There is a reason my power bill is ridiculously low. Not only am I in a tiny pocket of low electric cost but I also use not all that much.
