Decided to make the hamburger helper Gwen made for dinner tonight. Added too much pasta. With the amount of liquid it's taking we'll eat probably sometime in August. How do you add too much pasta to Hamburger Helper? Don't you just use what's in the box? I made it from scratch. It finally cooked but we'll be eating it for weeks.

I make Hamburger Helper from scratch when DH wants it. I can't get on board with the boxed stuff anymore. Recipe please? We like it but could use a variation from it.

I used it one time, didn't care for it.
We went to The Brick tonight and had pizza. I had a chef salad so I wouldn't have indigestion. Pizza is not one of my best things to eat
Little guy is back and says he is bored, he is wanting to play on the phone or watch you tube. Like his folks I'm trying to keep him off much as I can. I gave it to him for an hour and I'm watching a movie.
I guess he threw a fit wanting to come back this morning! But he also just likes being here I guess. It's always different at grandma's. I loved the few times I was able to stay at my grandma's but didn't get to often.

The make-up set sounds lovely. Are you able to post a picture? I've never figured out the picture thing - sorry That's OK. Neither have I.

Sushi is such a smart little man. I just turned on the air conditioner, and he flew into the room, landing on the couch where's its closest to the machine that makes it cold.

Good morning, you beautiful people of Y Ma'am, finding answers and progressing on all fronts. Welcome to Monday. I hope your day proffers additional handholds for your climb into the future. And if you didn't celebrate National Ice Cream Day yesterday it's not too late! Mondays cry for ice cream, especially in July. The rain is supposed to end any time now and then we'll have a clear and very warm day in the 80's. Yesterday DH and I went to the town beach with Franklin the Dog. Dogs are okay on the beach, leashed, when no lifeguards are on duty, so when it is not busy. Weather was iffy yesterday, so it worked well. Franklin was delighted. DD got her butt in gear and began looking all over the state for affordable housing. I'm glad. She's owning the process, 3 cats and all. I'm going tomorrow to Maryland to take back here a carload of her stuff. Interestingly she found several possible apartments in a town my grandmother went to college in. So this could work. It must work! Today I'm going to clear out the shed, to hold DD's Stuff, and the guest room just in case she winds up coming back with me to look at apartments. Leaving on the train very early tomorrow. This was dawn yesterday before the rain moved in:

It gets made most often to use up milk. Something changed with the milk a couple years ago. It doesn't matter whether I buy it at Aldi, Walmart, fancy grocery store, warehouse club it is all bad by the date. It used to be good for several days after the date.

I had the same problem with milk going bad until I switched to organic milk which is ultra pasteurized. It stays good forever. Yes, it's more expensive but, for us, less expensive than pouring out spoiled milk. The 1/2 gallon in my fridge now has a use-by date of August 22 and it will last that long

Hugs to all that need them. I forget if I mentioned it here, but FIL is in a skilled nursing facility right now, having fallen out of bed and broken his leg. They were pretty worried about him for a while but he’s doing better now. So between ferrying MIL over, supplying blueberries and grapes to fruit-addict FIL, catching up on weekend chores and the neighbors annual waterslide birthday party (5+ hours, of which DS is willing to miss 0) it was a full weekend and I am once again not prepared for it to be Monday. Progress on the pool and we are hoping water might go in in the next week or two…beyond the rainwater, that is, which is presently host to a thriving population of tadpoles and mosquito larvae. Can’t kill the larvae without harming the tadpoles but maybe they’ll eat them? This week’s extracurricular to do list: car inspection, schedule kid dental appt and watch for inherited accounts to go live. I am mildly annoyed that the latter got delayed long enough to be showing some capital gains.

yay, I had two calls get cancelled today! I cleaned the bathrooms I kept putting off yesterday during the first one. the second is the noon one that f's up my Mondays every week. I will be able to take the pups for a stroll around the development.
right now, I'm about to log in to an app to crank out a few keystrokes for approvals while I wait on water to boil. breakfast today will be the last piece of chicken piccata from last night's dinner. I used the end of one box of pasta last night, and will finish off a different curly cut this morning. definitely need to get better about that lol...

Bad news, that means I need to clean the effing house

One of the neighborhood realtors leaves a jar at every house once a year out here as a tasty marketing gimmick This is reminding me that we once made a pilgrimage back to the Midwest, hit an early apple cider mill and bought apple butter there only to realize later that the label said it was made about 40 mi from our house in MD

Monday observation. Every drug store, plus Costco, has an entire aisle dedicated to products to assist with digestion and elimination of food. Fiber, pre- and probiotics, gas reducers, acid reducers, stool softeners, heartburn treatments, anti-diarrheal. and more.
I am not a scientist, but it's my understanding that living organisms (including humans) have two basic drives - survival and reproduction. Survival mandates consumption and processing of food. How have we humans arrived at a point where a lot of artificial assistance is needed to perform a core function?

I just read an article about this the other day www.popularmechanics.com/science/health/a42735157/human-microbiome-going-extinct/ The slow death of the human microbiome is thanks to our modern way of life. We use antibiotics to kill off bad bacteria. But antibiotics kill off plenty of the good stuff, too. Blaser says the more antibiotics given to a child, the more likely they are to develop a range of illnesses. Blaser adds that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates about one-third of antibiotic prescriptions are unnecessary, leading to the overuse.

The associate microbiologist position posted this morning. I am going to go for it and see what happens. Thanks to inflation I am hitting a point again where 3% raises once a year aren't cutting it I need to increase my salary in a significant fashion.
I suppose that is a bright side of not going for my PhD. I'd still be making peanuts but have a mountain more of student loan debt to show for it.
Could not have predicted a once in a century pandemic that would cause inflation the likes of which we haven't seen since the 70s but damn I shouldn't have stayed in academics as long as I did. It really cost me in terms of salary increases. With as much of a hash as I have made of exiting I suppose the impulse to do so in hindsight was good timing. I could be in such a worse position if I still only made $39k a year.
ETA: And I figured it was good to capitalize on the networking opportunity that landed in my lap. It is the sign of a very good boss boss but I was still floored when he told me that handed my resume to the head of the micro department because he knows they are looking for flow cytometry skills and that it is potentially a good fit for everyone. I would be absolutely stupid to waste an introduction like that.

How have we humans arrived at a point where a lot of artificial assistance is needed to perform a core function? Some could be related to poor diet. Some could be related to the aging population. (I once had a doctor tell me that everyone over the age of 40 has some degree of reflux. I don't have reflux to my knowledge. But I imagine there could be a connection between reflux and age.) And some could be related to the notion that there are now better supplements and OTC drugs to aid digestion compared to the past. People don't need to suffer like they did in the past. Steve Jobs once advised to eat food as our medicines, or our medicines will become our food. I know my digestion is much better from a few changes I made: drink more water, quit taking magnesium supplements, and limit alcohol.

Enjoying a quiet day on the river. DH is fishing while I am catching some rays. We will float the kayaks tomorrow. Much needed quiet time away from home.

I've seen in this neighborhood, that I need to use a bungee cord to keep my trash bins secured from raccoons and that I'm the only one that has to do this. this isn't a comment about me being high and mighty or anything like that, b/c we also know what my recycle bin sounds like when it's dumped <clink > but it's more to the point of me cooking fresh foods for the pups. the majority of my trash is scraps, bones, vegetable peels and such. perfect pickings for wildlife.
