My MIL was prescribed Cipro like it was candy because it was "easy" to appease her hypochondria with. I often wonder if that had anything to do with a lot of her gut problems. I wouldn't be shocked if it did. And if you want to talk anti-biotic abuse look at the meat industry. Not only is it cheap to treat them with but A LOT of them are used as growth stimulants. I had to run sensitivity tests on a lot of bacteria and I wanted to take pictures to post because talk about anti-biotic resistance. There was one particularly nasty Ecoli that was resistant to 23 out of the 24 we tested and well on it's way to being resistant to Amikacin which is one of the last resort drugs for Ecoli. This issue is not solved by not eating meat either. The antibiotics that are not absorbed get passed through and go into our water supply. We're unwittingly taking massive amounts of antibotics without even being aware of it.

The associate microbiologist position posted this morning. I am going to go for it and see what happens. Thanks to inflation I am hitting a point again where 3% raises once a year aren't cutting it I need to increase my salary in a significant fashion. I suppose that is a bright side of not going for my PhD. I'd still be making peanuts but have a mountain more of student loan debt to show for it. Could not have predicted a once in a century pandemic that would cause inflation the likes of which we haven't seen since the 70s but damn I shouldn't have stayed in academics as long as I did. It really cost me in terms of salary increases. With as much of a hash as I have made of exiting I suppose the impulse to do so in hindsight was good timing. I could be in such a worse position if I still only made $39k a year. ETA: And I figured it was good to capitalize on the networking opportunity that landed in my lap. It is the sign of a very good boss boss but I was still floored when he told me that handed my resume to the head of the micro department because he knows they are looking for flow cytometry skills and that it is potentially a good fit for everyone. I would be absolutely stupid to waste an introduction like that. Minor nitpick: in the sciences and other STEM you would typically be paid a stipend during a phd that would just barely cover single person with roommates living expenses as well as tuition, so hopefully no more loans. But you’d also be moving out of the area and working crazy hours for 5+ years only to find your potentially increased earning power severely limited where you could choose to live. I was horrified at how hard it was to find a job in my field that also accommodated reasonable career potentials for DH…basically we could live in the Bay Area or Boston-Cambridge, and pay $2M for a starter home. Feeling pretty lucky that we landed in just a HCOL where we could live on the outskirts rather than a VHCOL with no outskirts within 2 hours’ drive. I am so glad to hear your boss has your back Good luck!

Opoids also significantly slow down food elimination and cause constipation. We americans like our drugs.

I am not made for waiting or nervous anticipation. We're leaving for Aruba on Saturday. Yay! I woke up with my stomach in knots. Boo. I am just antsy to pack and get TF there already. Generalized anxiety is for the birds.

Monday observation. Every drug store, plus Costco, has an entire aisle dedicated to products to assist with digestion and elimination of food. Fiber, pre- and probiotics, gas reducers, acid reducers, stool softeners, heartburn treatments, anti-diarrheal. and more. I am not a scientist, but it's my understanding that living organisms (including humans) have two basic drives - survival and reproduction. Survival mandates consumption and processing of food. How have we humans arrived at a point where a lot of artificial assistance is needed to perform a core function? because a lot of what people are eating today is shit for food? I've seen in this neighborhood, that I need to use a bungee cord to keep my trash bins secured from raccoons and that I'm the only one that has to do this. this isn't a comment about me being high and mighty or anything like that, b/c we also know what my recycle bin sounds like when it's dumped <clink > but it's more to the point of me cooking fresh foods for the pups. the majority of my trash is scraps, bones, vegetable peels and such. perfect pickings for wildlife. We have city provided carts. I don't think anything but a bear could tip the cart. I certainly have digestive issues. we do cook a lot from scratch and eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. Now that I am following the Low Fodmap diet, I was questioning if I can eat more things that have a lower % of lactose. yesterday DH and I went to breakfast and I had a crepe with fruit in it, and American fries that looked to have a lot of butter on them. I made sure to just eat one crepe and only about 1/2 Cup of the fries. Then I ordered two pizzas for the crew putting the roof on the gazebo and tried 1/2 a slice of pizza for the first time in about 15 years. I think the pizza was a bad idea. It would be good to be able to eat pizza socially, but I have already gotten used to not being able to eat it. I won't try again. I felt some pressure to try some of those foods that are borderline maybe ok b/c we got an invite to a wedding we want to go to, but I won't be able to eat most of the food. As we are not close friends or family, just co-workers, I did not want to reply to the special dietary needs query. DH said he would take me to get something to eat before we go to the wedding, or we would leave early. The venue is really cool, so we wanted to attend. I was just feeling too "extra" when I was trying to explain my dietary needs. I was kind of relieved DH said either say we will attend, and don't request any special entre, or we just won't go b/c that is exactly what I was thinking. My neighbor is almost always outside in the evening at her firepit, and I had gone over to discuss with her and her 18 year old daughter. The daughter is gluten intolerant, and she plans to become a dietician. The neighbor is a naturalized citizen, originally from Poland. She has one brother in Poland and one living in France. So, she was telling me that she went to France last fall to see her brother with her daughter. They had ordered a GF entre for the plane, but their original flight was delayed and cancelled and then they did manage to rebook them on a direct flight to France, but b/c they did not have 24 hours advance notice, they could not get a GF meal. She said when they got to France, they had a really hard time finding anyplace that had GF food. She said her daughter called her Dad and asked him to book fer a flight home, and that her brother thinks the DD is a spoiled brat. I don't think their kids are spoiled or brats at all. I did tell my neighbor that I especially seem to have digestive issues when travelling, and that I also eat very little when I am travelling. I told her once we went to LaCrosse, WI with the family and we had 2 rooms. DH and DS, DD and my Mom and I. The kids were already adults, but rather than get 3 rooms, we split Girls/Guys. I said I was so sick, I changed my clothing 3 times and cleaned the bathroom. My Mom claimed she slept through everything and did not notice, which made me feel better. I was wondering if a Cruise would be a good vacation option for their family? Have those of you that travel via cruise noticed if Gluten Free items are readily available? This family is fairly well off, I think the issue was just that she was staying with her brother and he is a bachelor. They have gone to Poland numerous times, but they stayed with her Mom or in her Step Dad's house and probably did their own cooking there. DD goes to Germany tonight and will be home Wednesday thru Sunday then she will be in Florida for a week. She will stay with her boyfriend but will be on an expense account for meals, so she says they will well take advantage of that. DD left home Monday the 12th. Business Trips wrapped around vacation days. She is probably lucky that she will be home for 4 days before she goes to Florida again as she had a really hard time packing. She took a carryon bag and a Vera Bradley overnight bag. She could check another bag for free, she just did not want to.

I'll defer to others on their comfort level with cruises and their food restrictions. I have felt particularly unsafe (and adjusted my choices accordingly) on the cruise line I currently sail for music festivals. but as the music cruise management is now owned by that line, it's either sail with them, or miss out. I pack snacks. right now, I'm shaking my head at a delivery that just landed....and that I f'd up on. I ordered a pair of those red-capped clear Rubbermaid shakers, to replace a cracked one. I abuse these things, using them for mixing marinades, homemade salad dressing, stir-fry sauces, or for shaking up cocktails. I can mix those for a party or for one. well, I typically buy the 1qt size. the two that just arrived are 2qt. I'm wondering if I erred b/c there aren't any options for 1qt on Amazon rn. it didn't occur to me to check the volume, the bottles look the same in pics. oops.

Generalized anxiety is for the birds. Quoting not because I like it, but because as I get older, I realize that I actually am anxious and realize how it has affected me through my life. I didn't understand what I was feeling.

How have we humans arrived at a point where a lot of artificial assistance is needed to perform a core function? True, but once upon a time people either died or were made utterly miserable by these issues too. I remember a time where my grandmother had a prescription for Metamucil. She took this crap as long as I can remember because it helped ameliorate the issues she had with pockets in her colon. Those problems still existed back then too. It’s not so much needing assistance, but gaining relief from age old problems. Why should I suffer from heartburn (damn chili seems to be the most common culprit for me) when I can still enjoy it and get relief when my gut rebels? There are aisles full of allergy pills, pain meds and eye drops also. My allergies aren’t going to kill me, but popping a couple Zyrtec before bed assures that I can still breathe through my nose at 2 am.

bean29, the cruise I was on had plenty of GF options for every meal and snack, plus vegan, kosher and everything else. FYI

If I have to hazard a guess, your friend’s daughter did no5 look in the right places. I have a gluten intolerant friend and she easily gets food to eat where ever she goes. About cruises, yes……dietary needs are very well dealt with at Viking. I was having dinner a few cruises ago and the chef came out to discuss this woman’s needs. She had a very long laundry list of things she could not eat and the chef said she’d eat well, but she needed to decide which restaurant she wanted to eat at and he’d have things for her.

We used Norweigan Cruise lines last month and I noticed that gluten-free options were offered in all the restaurants, both seated and buffet. I think gluten sensitivity has become so widespread that most larger lines will have the alternatives.

I'm going to the pool in a few minutes. My friends go to another, Olympic-sized outdoor pool in another neighbourhood, and they invite me to come along. There's absolutely no shade. They stay for hours, but I can't deal with all that sun and no shade. It's not like I can get in my car and leave. I'll stick with my smaller, indoor pool, thank you. There's a patio off the pool where you can sit and get some sun if you like.

I did not get the position I interviewed for last week. Which was not surprising to me. I know who got it, it's who I assumed would get it. I said I wasn't shocked at all concerning who got it and kinda figured it would go that way. I may stand a decent chance of getting the associate micro position though. My resume was passed onto my boss's boss's boss and the head of microbiology. Both of them want me to apply for at least one of the positions. I am not interested in lateral right this moment, I am shooting for associate. I can always circle back to the technician positions if they are still open. My bigger concern is do I end up being just stuck there as a technician again? It's one thing to make the leap knowing it will get me where I want go. It's another to make the leap and end up in another dead end. If it is the latter I might as well stay where I am currently and secure and wait for additional associate positions to open up. I will think about it though. Honestly applying for the other position while it would have been nice to get it was a stretch exercise for me and to prove to myself I am not an idiot. Working at my last company especially with Peacock and stuff wore down my self esteem/value. Then while I loved my PIs I never quite realized how crushing it was to work in an industry where your sole value is the piece of paper you have in your hand until I was out of it. Then add on last year where everything was a clusterf*ck because I was hanging on by a thread. Just getting past the recruiter had me tickled pink. It showed I can do it, I do have value, that the 14 years I've put into this stupid career path are worth something.

Gosh, DIL started on something I wasn't going to do for awhile as I'm tired.
She started peeling the wallpaper off the main bathroom without asking me. It's just that I know I will have to fix it, she said, oh you need to teach me. I have to wet it and peel it and fix some, I guess its drywall. It looks like there is some kinds of plastic? behind it but not sure.
That bathroom is awful, green bathtub, ugly flooring and horribly outdated wall paper. I was looking at flooring the other day and didn't find anything I liked. The master bath, has some paper to come down around the sink and behind a door so it won't be bad, but not something I want to do this time either.
So now I will have to work on that before I leave.
I'm seeing if grandson will come with us and we will fly home early and I will bly him back up and stay a couple of weeks. He wants to see grandpa and spend time with him and DD said she will stay home this time, so that should work.
We will see what his dad says about it.

I'm going to that Hillbilly BBQ in a few hours. I suspect that this is something that will require a lot of weed. Oh well, at least I'll get supper out of it for 6 bucks. Should be interesting.

I should be able to finnd something I like easily I have been playing, and winning, the "I don't wanna" game for a month now. I will be on a plane to SE Asia in 3 weeks so I need to get mu butt in gear but...I don't wanna
Oh, and the week before I fly DS2 and his family will be here for a visit so I really am down to just 2 weeks. Still don't wanna

DH still has hope that he can catch fish for dinner. He had luck earlier but released them. I have not eaten since 930 this morning. Just get the firepit going so I can have a hot dog.
ETA - Thunderstorms coming in about 3 hours. No fire started means no fire. I'm just going to eat a couple of beef sticks, cheese, and chips. He's on his own.

How do you add too much pasta to Hamburger Helper? Don't you just use what's in the box? I made it from scratch. It finally cooked but we'll be eating it for weeks. Send leftovers to MPL's house. Her boys will knock it out.

Logged another 3 hours on the bylaws project with DH's help proofing. I'm really hoping to get it completed tomorrow because my hair needs cutting and my kitchen needs cleaning.

I feel this. I spent way too long in personal lines. I cost myself a lot of money not making the switch earlier. I just look at it now as I have 20 more years to work at a much higher salary, so I'm still better off.

I finally found a spot in the cell phone lot at Logan. I know L has landed, but she checked luggage and stuff. this lot is in a different place than where I hung out waiting for andi, and it's packed with creepy guys standing around - Uber/Lyft waiting for pickups. glad I have the pups with me. some of them looked at me sideways when I drove through, looking for a space.

Got the bill for flood insurance renewal, $797, up $110 from last year. Sucks, but only a fool skips it. Mother Nature is cranky these days

It has been a really long, mostly horrible day.
I am still upset with Mister. I managed to have a non explosive conversations with him this morning, but I am still upset about a lot of shit.
I went to the appointment today with the urologist that my PCP referred me to., because I had microscopic amounts of blood in my urine, I still have blood in my urine as of today, and I don’t really want to talk about today’s visit. I kinda had a small meltdown while I was there, so they probably think I’m crazy too.
I blocked DD on my phone and on FB not too long ago, because she is a serious source of stress in my life, and I just can’t with her, not right now.
I have 2 envelopes sitting on my kitchen right now, with the rest of the mail, from my job. They are probably more nasty grams. I can’t with that right now, either. Idk why they don’t just say what they have to say while I’m at work, but that’s probably best too, because I’m so on edge, there’s no telling how I might react.
I don’t even feel anymore that if I just say fuck it and give up on today and just take my ass to bed, maybe tomorrow will be better. I’m so tired.
