It's been a weird day in my area. At 4am the power went out, and the fire whistle in the village was going off. At 6am the school district robocalled to say school was delayed an hour due to the power outage - they must have been promised that the power would be back on ASAP, because what are they going to do once all the buses show up? DH and I never heard the phone, because of course the cordless landlines don't work w/o power; DS4 heard the ancient corded phone upstairs and answered it. Power came back on just after 7am - DH figured it out because he suddenly got emails (when the wifi came back on) from both NGrid and Spectrum that our service was out! Nothing, not a peep, on Firewire about WHY 1200 people lost power. Mid day, Firewire's FB is blowing up about a boat capsizing in the caves near the canal - 36 people (or 28 or 29), conflicting reports about entrapment. Lots of parents in the chat aren't sure if their kids on field trips are on a boat in the caves, or on a boat thru the canal locks, so all calling their schools frantic. Also lots of disagreement on how deep the water is in the caves (2-4', or more) and how large the boat is - most said no way the boats hold that many people, the caves are narrow at points so boats are small. News says 1 60yo man died, 11 injured/at hospital (water is cold). The story DH heard is that they were primarily hospitality workers, organizers were trying to pump up interest and promote the boat tours. There's kind of a what's next feeling, because this weekend there was a small plane crash (fatal) and first responders were searching the canal because it appeared someone jumped off a bridge. The plane crash is all over the local tv news, but haven't heard about the canal search (saw it on twitter in passing days ago). Too many freak deaths here lately.

Funny thing is that I grew up in Baltimore, so I was surrounded by crime my entire childhood. DH knew no crime until he was grown. The area that we live in is very low crime, a complete 180 from my childhood, and I am more lax on security than DH is. I always make sure doors are locked and such, but DH is always on high alert about EVERYTHING. It exhausts me, mostly because he acts like I don't know how to protect myself. Dude, I've seen things I'd never tell you about. That would only put him way more over the top. My American husband from NYC moved up to Montreal and was always on high alert for nefarious doings. Drove me crazy. Relax, dude!

a British friend of mine posted this earlier tonight, and I felt like I took a kick to the teeth. the first thing that came to mind was a new poster here - do any of you remember the young soldier that somehow found our board a number of years ago? I want to say that young man was Russian, but I honestly can't remember. what I do remember, though, is that his colleagues took the time to find this board to let us know he'd been killed in battle. *I'll edit this post if the formatting doesn't translate. www.facebook.com/623305376/videos/252499764049163/It's not working. I'm sorry we lost a poster in battle. Although, I am wary of a Russian poster. In case we were chatting about military conflicts.

From my observations, Canadians are in what's known as condition white. Not paying attention to the environment and who is in it. Aware Americans are assessing the situations, environment and people. Choke points and escape routes. Red flag people. Anyone seen more than once in a few hours. Big city people are even more vigilant.
I got my purse picked by a bunch of teenagers I saw sneaking in the back door of the movie theater. First, they targeted me at the ticket counter to see where I pulled my money from. After the movie, there was an unusual rush of people when I got pushed into a pillar. Zip, money gone. I don't use a regular wallet but a calling card holder for cc and a little cash. A small cell phone size purse. Easy to tuck away.

Susana congratulations! Maybe the new owners would want to buy the love seat and couch? No, they are turning it into a rental house. They are going to charge $1875 a month plus you have to do the half-acre yard, which currently costs me $250 a month. I started making myself sick at the thought of spending half my take-home to live in my own house while waiting for something to open up. I wasn't sure how long I could do it, but I thought maybe until the first of the year. Now you see why I am so excited. Not only did I get a house where I want to live, but I don't have to pay all that rent. Honestly, my house isn't worth it. Congratulations! I bet you are every bit of happy and relieved with the outcome. How awesome!

Oh, now a local blogger just linked to news about *more* changes to the healthcare in our area. Backstory: Catholic health absorbed the last remaining hospital in the county seat L* and immediately planned to shut it down, building a new facility in a different location - which sounds like less of a hospital and more of offices (which won't be done before our hospital shuts down in days). There is a hospital on the *far* side of the county - far enough away we might just as well go to hospitals in the much bigger metro area south instead. But at least there's one big-ish hospital still functioning in the county, in case of emergencies, right? "other Catholic Health hospitals" would be those in the much bigger metro area to the south. Gee, thanks! Why take over a hospital, mothball the existing campus, build new facilities in new locations, while scaling back services because you can't afford to do everything? And then do it AGAIN in the same under-served county? How is building NEW on new land cheaper than using current facilities? Maternity, dialysis, surgeries have ALREADY BEEN *transitioned* from L* TO N*, now you are dropping them at N*, too? What services will be left at these NEW facilities? Stop consolidating hospitals at the center of an eight county region, in a downtown on the waterfront of a Great Lake (i.e., transportation deadend).

Carrot's hiking shoes bought (size 12.5!!), new gate latch installed on Gus's stall, missing bag of grain replaced.
Still not packed. Plus, I almost burned my barn down tonight! I was trying to find some screws to install the latch and was digging in the back corner I never do. There are overhead shop lights which I flipped on. I had a few seconds to register that the lights weren't very bright before I realized the light cages were filled with bird nests and they burst into flames and start dropping little fireballs of hay all over. Thank god it was the side of the barn not over loose hay, but there was all kinds of crap in that corner, waste oil and junk as well as piles of loose insulation. It took what seemed like an eternity to get a hose untangled from the mess to spray it down. I won't be able to get the light cleaned out before I leave so I'm going to tape the switch up so nobody accidentally flips it. Unlikely but not taking a chance. Stupid sparrows. I hope I at least fried some eggs.

Sorry about your almost fire, glad your barn is still intact. Critters do do that unfortunately. Sometimes a bird builds a nest in my exhaust fan housing. Sometimes it is a wasp colony. For some reason wasps always seem to build into the pipes into the stove so sometimes I get that nice burned wasp smell or a couple come flying out of whatever burner I am using. The flames will look pretty bad for awhile on that burner but luckily so almost kitchen burning. Is Gus feeling better?

ETA Just got this in my spam folder about my mcafee account being renewed!! dawud0544@gmail.com> Google has to know that this people are sending out thousands of email under gmail domain - you would think and yet they do nothing about it I still have a land line and I still find myself receiving calls from myself. 🤔

Good morning, adventurous invisipeeps, wending your way through the days. I hope your Tuesday is productive and satisfying and includes ice cream. We are home. Going to pick up Franklin the Dog from ODB's later this afternoon. The trip back was uneventful in the end. Loved Oslo. DH had bought tickets for a fjord sightseeing cruise in Oslo that was just perfect. It included a lovely lunch on board. We flew premium economy which was well worth it. More reasonable than business class, but many of the same perks including food and drink and entertainment and extra space. We have nothing scheduled for this upcoming weekend, but for the 4 weekends after, we have shows scheduled for our photography. Need to plan for those and make certain we have enough prints. It's going to take some time to sink back into a routine here. We really could have used another week of cruising. For those of you going on cruises, take The Walk of the Penguin Mich's advice and get magnetic hooks for the cabin walls. You will find them very useful.

You will find them very useful. We have this problem too…..even after 6 months on board! What we are adding to our bags for all cruises now are magnetic hooks, a collapsible laundry hamper and a little white board. All of these items are cheap, so you can ditch them if you have no room at the end. However, they are very valuable.

Catching up on some work things that I should have completed weeks ago. Biweekly meeting with boss tomorrow should be interesting. Oh well, getting a new boss next week anyway.

Waiting on MIL to take me to pick up my car from the shop, where it got an oil change yesterday. DH worked yesterday and today and does not get home until 8pm. Last night I said it could stay until Wednesday when DH was off, which freaked DH out. Understandably, because I am usually on edge when my car is not in the driveway. Now that I WFH it does not seem like a big deal, and we still have a 2 seater truck that I can drive if something were to come up.

Last night we had dinner with the other 9 world cruisers on board who are getting off in NYC. I learned some interesting things.
When I got Covid, I did what I was supposed to do and got tested. I isolated with a positive test. One person, an MD no less was hacking all over the ship. God knows how many she infected, but she knew she was positive (she told one of the women she infected who was at dinner last night) and continued to hack. She refused to go to the med center and get tested, and they couldn’t force her to. Selfish people. There were an incredible number of entitled people on the ship.
Then there was the story of the panty thief. Apparently one woman was convinced that there was a panty thief after an event that happened in the laundry room (a short woman needed help putting clothes in the dryer, so a woman waiting for her dryer to end helped her. A taller woman came into the laundry room and removed panties from the dryer.). Now this can be easily explained….my best guess was that there were no fewer than 20 same sex couples on this cruise. Same sex couple, spouse accidentally put partners panties into the dryer, and the partner went to retrieve them? Anyway, a pantry thief rumor started. So this woman writing a blood brought 14 pair with her in FL. By the time she got to Indonesia she had 8 pair (2+ months later). The panty thief struck! Now……panties and socks stick to the tub of the washer, and there is a spot in the dryer that you have to fish clothes out of. I triple check both, but many don’t and we have frequently found socks and panties in our loads that aren’t our’s. We take them back to the laundry room. So she went to the GM complaining and wanted cameras put up in the laundry room.
There were laundry room battles, and deck 5 where we were seemed like it was the epicenter. 2 guys came to blows because one guy left his clothes in the dryer 10 min after it stopped. Another guy removed the clothes, put his clothes in the dryer and decided to fold the clothes he had removed. The owner of the clothes saw him folding his wife’s panties, and hit the guy with his cane. Guy folding clothes slugged him back. Both got tossed off the ship in Hawaii, with their partners. That was an expensive 15 day cruise!

Reading an article about the lady who killed her husband and then wrote a grief book for children about it. She tried to take out a $2 million dollar life insurance policy on him right before he died. This is Discovery ID 101 people! You don't take out the life insurance policy right before you murder them. This is a long haul game you take that policy out YEARS before you decide to kill them! But seriously what a twisted story. I cannot imagine being so callous as to not only murder my husband but then profit off it by marketing myself as a grief counselor to kids.

Is this the one where she was slowly poisoning him with arsenic? I didn’t realize she was trying to get a life insurance policy out on him. That’s not very bright. Timing is everything.

At the very least I would not eat or drink anything that was handed to me by someone I suspected of trying to harm me.

What I don’t understand is why he would stay with her if he thought she was poisoning him? At the very least I would not eat or drink anything that was handed to me by someone I suspected of trying to harm me. Maybe he chalked it up to other things: Maybe he decided he was letting his imagination go wild after his affair? CNN's article alludes to the fact that he was a partier. I don't trust my thoughts in an altered state. For me, it was long term sleep deprivation. After 9 months of sleeping about 4 hours a night, broken up, I swore DH and I were going to divorce. I also had that niggling feeling that he was getting high. I was right. He was. And I gave him the benefit of the doubt when he lied to me because I was working 60+ hours on very minimal sleep, and all my energy was focused on producing so we continued to have a roof over our head and food in our bellies, especially with a baby. IOW, I knew I was becoming irrational outside of my job. So, it was plausible that my accusations were also irrational.
Who knows what the truth was. If he was a fairly hard core drinker, got high, and had an affair, he doesn't seem to be the greatest catch. They live in Utah. Not exactly a state with a history that is kind towards women. Clearly there had to be stuff brewing with her. We don't immediately turn to killing someone when we've had it. It's the kids that have to live with all of this. They are the ones that have to pay the price for whatever that parents didn't address.

In today's culture of true crime mania I can see talking yourself into believing you are paranoid because come on would your wife really be that obvious and poison your sandwich? There are a lot of other things the signs of poison can be. Arsenic for example builds up in your system over time so if you are ingesting small doses you may not put together that someone is putting stuff in your drink you may put it down to the flu or seasonal allergies.

What I want to know is how we in this small universe of Y Ma'am have so many so learned in the ways of poisons and poisonings, and what we should understand from that?
