I apologize for not already knowing this and being too lazy at the moment to google it, but what started these fires?

We’re getting haze and a smoke smell today in SE Virginia. I found some particles on my windshield when I went out to go to the grocery store. The weather guesser is advising that people with health issues like COPD, Asthma, etc, stay inside and run the air conditioner with windows closed. If we didn’t have the haze, it would be a beautiful day.

My livingroom windows are massive and I'm not strong enough to take them out to clean them. An entire wall of windows. They're so grimy I could barely see through them. I live on a major thoroughfare with lots of dust and dirt, truck exhaust and construction across the street. I called window cleaning companies and they won't come for one window. I've been begging the super to clean them for two years. It's not his job. I finally offered him $100 and he came yesterday. He did a great job, and they're sparkling, but I still can't see through them very well. It's the damn smog from from the fires.

We've had no rain and lightning starts most of them. Then there's human stupidity, like campfires when it's bone dry.

I wonder if I am doing the right thing, selling my home in hopes of buying one in the only retirement community in my area. Oh, there are senior apartments elsewhere, but they are either expensive or depressing. I can buy a cute little garden home here. And I have friends here. Anyway, my neighbors are buying my house, and I am doing a rent-back. Um, the rent-back is for $500 more than I am currently paying and double what I "have" to pay, and I am still responsible for paying for a lawn service. So all in all, I am going to pay $2000 a month to live in my old house. The plus side is no deposit, security or for Penny (at least that they have mentioned), and it is strictly month-to-month. Pet deposits are horrific, running about $500 and are non-refundable. And they still charge you monthly rent! I don't have to figure out a way to store stuff, particularly my appliances, which I would if I moved into an apartment. Someone on here is sure to suggest that I delay closing until I find something, but I don't want to do that. I want to be able to make a clean offer for a quick close when something comes up. And it will. The last time I made an offer, that was one of the reasons that I was rejected. I told my BFF that I have to look at this as a short term problem. Lawn care ends in October, and won't pick up again to March or April. As a renter, it will be April. So in four months, it becomes $250 cheaper. Still, you have to wonder sometimes if you are doing the right thing. I have fallen twice in the last three months. This house really isn't the one for me these days.

I think with any big changes, there can be short term costs. They can be big, and mellow out in the long term. I think you are being very smart. I know what the alternative is when you stay in a house you shouldn't be living in. It's not something I would wish for you to go through.

this is putting you in a much better/more flexible position to be able to buy your next place. is it ideal? no. was my "summer rental" ideal? hardly. but it let me put in much stronger offers when the market was starting to get stupid.

I think its smart too. That is our problem, we want to sell this one first, if we do sell before we buy so we know exactly what we can spend. Even the mobile won't help us totally because of all hubs garage stuff, but we both plan to sell quite a bit. The boat, the truck, and the motorhome. Then later the backhoe, so that alleviates a lot of big stuff we can't move.
I just hope they don't get pushy and want you to move before you can buy a place. Be sure and agree on how long you can stay.

I was in a panic a couple years back when I thought I was going to be unable to walk. For me I got really lucky in finding someone to help with my weight. But if it had not happened I would now be in a world of hurt.
I know I am one of the rare ones that was able to pull myself back at my age and believe me I am thankful. I am finding walking up and downstairs more is helping me be more stable and developing muscles in my legs again. I need to use my exercise equipment down there too, I just need to do it. Not raising a garden and canning is giving me a lot more time. Am I like I used to be, of course not, but its a vast improvement. Now if only I could get DD to move more, I had to help her walk at the festival the other day and that is just of her own doing, lying in bed all the time. But she has no interests, she used to try and do all kinds of things, but poor girl doesn't have good fine muscle control, can't follow directions, so someone has to help her do anything. So I think she just finally gave up. She can't read well and knows it and they would put her in the low reading group and it hurt her feelings. She is smart enough to know but yet lacking so, it must be incredibly frustrating for her. So I am going to have to help her get around! I can't do that forever either.
We had lunch, her a cheeseburger, me just a burger with pickles, no bread. The only kind of bread I really like is home baked bread and I rarely make it.
I did get my laundry room closet cleaned, that was dirty and now have room for cleaning products in the bottom plus some boots.
Also I did something I rarely if ever do, I pitched a small wastebasket of makeup from my makeup drawer. That sure needs done more often. I have a storage container in my closet that I'm going through and donating the stuff or pitching, I have another bag started for it.
Need to finish dressing and run to town to pay the attorney and pick up a couple of things at the store. Not all the stuff I was going to do, but I'm doing things that need done. And laundry of course, always laundry.

DD is coming over for dinner tonight. She is bringing the main course, and a salad. So, I'll be baking some apple crisp for dessert. (I rarely make a dessert with a meal, but I tend to when DD is here.)

thank you! You are correct - that's the word I should have used. It's not a question of affordability - it's a question of equity where one person pays 100% of something that benefits two parties. The tenant has already paid out several thousand dollars in materials for the back of the property which he built himself with outstanding workmanship. Materials for the remaining joint side would cost $1800. She refuses to pay a dime for a wooden privacy fence, but wants him to pay 1/2 of the 4' chain link she wants. Wooden privacy fences run about $60/foot currently, more with metal poles like we used on ours and he uses. Re-fencing the three sides of my house would cost in the range of $12,000-$15,000. Why is chain link the hill to die on? I know I'd much rather have a 6' privacy fence over 4' chain link any day. Do either have dogs? A 4' fence is way easier for a dog to jump over. Plus, why have people see into your yard if you don't have to? It's a hill to die on for her because (1) it's cheaper and $$ are her god and (2) it's forcing her choice on someone else. Both have dogs, she has 2-3 terrier size-he has 1 mid-size and 2 very large Great Danes. She likes having people see in her yard. She's been feuding with the neighbor on the other side for 30+ years. The police have been called numerous times over the years because she would put up large plywood signs with spray painted insults, profanity and ethnic epithets (neighbor is German). Once they were called because she was walking around her backyard nude with "kiss this, b----- written on her butt cheeks. She would love to do the same going forward against this neighbor, he's Jewish which would give her all sorts of signs to put up or on her body Nothing she does makes sense to sane people unless you remember that money comes over anything else and she hates everyone.

I have to say when my neighbors built a 6 foot wood fence between us on the West side (neighbor on the East side already had a 6 foot wood fence, my back yard instantly went from seeming spacious to being like a box. The house was to the north and the garage to the south and the yard wasn't big to begin with. It totally changed the feel of the yard and I really hated it. It was more private for sure, but it seemed so tiny and stuffy after.
eta: this was years ago when I lived in town.
I had never seen a yard without a privacy fence until I went to Missouri on vacation. It was pretty cool, but their lots were much larger. Here there's 10 feet from wall to wall between us.

We got the daily special bento box at lunch today and it was great - some of our favorites. It included pork katsu, lettuce and cucumber salad, shredded and pickled carrots and daikon, a salad with seaweed, cucumbers, and diced octopus, grilled fish collar, 3 slices of a spicy tuna roll, and of course rice.

I hope you enjoy! Also, there's no 'e' in whisky We're heading to Scotland next week to see my family. I don't like whisky at all but my (American) husband does so we always visit a distillery and bring back a bottle or two. Hmm... I recently bought a bottle of Crown Royal. It definitely has an "e" in Whiskey. I don't think I've ever seen (noticed?) it spelled without an e in it. Maybe it depends on where you live? It depends on which country it’s from. Ireland, with an e, Scotland, no e.

Local social media is getting interesting today. On Nextdoor a post about re-potting a plant somehow devolved into two neighbors trumpeting "All Hail Satan" . One of them is a lead (local forum moderator/administrator) and he apparently decided to delete a post about a local vacation Bible school

It's so different here. Fences are not very common at all, especially not privacy fences and in the newer subdivisions the HOAs don't even allow them.

I now love my neighbors. When they redid their fence last year they just told us they were redoing their fence and we said thanks for letting us know! They went from a wooden shadow box fence to a PVC fence so I have three wooded fence walls and one PVC with a slight gap between us. Is it ugly? Sure. Do I care? Nope! A new fence is part of a long-term plan (reno mudroom, add parking spot in back, redo fence). Our neighbors do want to redo their concrete front steps and we are going in with them on that since we're connected and it will look better as one continuous step than an obviously new and obviously old block of concrete.

I'm done. They refuse to give me a copy of the care plan and refuse to answer my concerns about Tylenol and threw in my face I refused to be medical POA.
I also got chastised for missing the meeting in the same breath even though I owned it was my mistake.
Fuck it I'm done. I'll keep signing checks and I'll do her Medicaid form and then I'm out.
Stupid fucking bullshit.

I should have known better. It was going to be thrown in my face eventually. I have a right to question why she's being charged for 186 Tylenol but apparently since it's medical they can tell me it's because they said so.
Okey dokey.
And the peanut gallery wonders why family stops being involved or showing up after awhile.

That's ok, most people spell it with an 'e' but Scottish whisky doesn't need to add anything extra to either the name or the spelling. In case you didn't realize, I was teasing . The only thing that kind of irritates me is being referred to as "Scotch". People from Scotland are called "Scots" - we might have a reputation for drinking a lot but we haven't actually turned into liquor! One of my great grandmother's and her family are referred to as Scotch Half-Breeds in the Census' for the late 1800s thereby offending everyone equally.

Regarding fires, BC has abandoned Fire Season and has just made it a year round thing to match the new reality and make sure they have some staff available all the time.
Don't expect things to get better in Northern BC anytime soon. We are expecting a day or 2 of 30+ Celsius and the 7 day forecast isn't expecting any rain until maybe the 7th day.

Thank you for the explanation and I'm really sorry for everyone that is suffering. Hopefully, the extra man power coming in to help will do some good. They're coming from all over the world to help. However, this is the new normal. It's going to happen every year. Excessive heat and lots of lightening. And less moisture or at least moisture at the wrong time in the wrong form.
