THANK YOU!!! I wish I could get this thru to my sister - she won't get vaxxed, didn't vax her boys (who've both now had Covid), feeds mom this Fox news nonsense so she didn't get vaxxed, either. Sis claims she knows the truth, because she gets the CDC etc reports at work, blah blah blah. To tell if it's weaker, you have to look at cases in unvaccinated people who also haven't had an earlier variant. Even in the first round of cases, majority weren't *that* bad, even though high numbers were quite sick and/or died. Covid has likely culled our most fragile over the past two years, so that there's a shrinking percentage of our population left that's as highly susceptible to dying from it. Still some, but a much lower number unprotected. But omicron is so much more transmissible, and we've dropped nearly all mitigation measures, so it's mostly just a matter of time before everyone is exposed. Like mom (80s and militantly unvaxxed), ... and then dad (90s and beginning to shuffle, and only had J&J vax). Anyone who has the courage to mention that you can only die once and how this affects the mortality rates of infectious diseases gets a star in my world.
I have no memory of anyone else having the same poor taste. Hence you get a thumbs-up for courage. (Is there a rule against starting a written sentence with the word "hence"?)
If you can direct me to other folks making the same argument that Omicron and its sub-variants are not necessarily less virulent / we just have more immunity, I'd like to read that. Nobody else seems to be saying that, but it might be due to lousy data and the tyranny of good taste.
I'm following a number of researchers on work Twitter, so I'm not sure who/where I first heard it. A quick Google search has official CDC policy "it's less severe" at the top, but this Marketwatch article makes my argument. May be paywalled. link to underlying study.

This happened long before there were vaccines or home tests available. She and her husband had to quarantine for 10 days, I think. Hubby was working for H & R Block. It was right at the end of tax season. He got his Covid pay and his season was over.
He was sicker than she was and he was not tested.

My turn hit this week. I thought it was allergies until I started coughing. Ive had worse colds. the vaccine worked. I had it a few weeks ago. It knocked me on my ass and then went away. So glad I was vaccinated/boosted.

I have always wondered how many people who suspected they had Covid did not get tested, for whatever reason. For instance - my parents got sick around the time that my sister and her husband tested positive (11/2020). Mom babysits in her home for sister, so neither got tested - just assumed that was what they had. My dad ended up hospitalized, where he was tested, but mom never got tested. It made me see that people who did not have to report at work, who are responsible to stay home when they are sick (they were actually too sick to do anything anyway, and other than family they live a fairly isolated life), or those who did not get any severe symptoms did not have strong reasons to get tested. I tested positive 9/2021. Went to an Urgent Care facility so that I would have the info to work quicker, and received a $230 bill.

I tested myself at home and did not report it officially to anyone who is counting.

The boss I had at my last job was antivax. She had a hellacious cold that she swore was just a summer cold. She refused to get tested because they were just going to tell her she had it. She had not done any social distancing at all which is probably how she got it. I'm pretty sure she didn't quarantine while she had it because she didn't believe that it was a thing. She's a big reason I left that job.

And now with at home tests, we don't know how many are positive. I tested myself at home and did not report it officially to anyone who is counting. I agree. Our positivity rates are up in my area but I feel like the population of those testing and reporting changed. We've gotten rid of a lot of the routine testing of people with no symptoms (teachers students, etc.). I've had 3 at-home tests that were negative- no symptoms but possible exposure. Never got into the official stats. Even if I were to test positive with an at-home test I'd be under the radar since I'd just self-isolate unless it turned serious. No idea what this is all doing to the positivity rate. It's up to 21% from about 2% a year ago but incidence rates, after a post-Christmas spike, are WAY down. Too many moving parts.

My positive test was not reported. I don't know if there is a way to report it.
In Iowa, only the first time a person tested positive was ever counted. I don't think it was the same for negatives, so the numbers were always hogwash.

Since June 1st - more people "close" to me are getting sick and testing positive for Covid (they are vax'ed and boosted). I'd say it's 50/50 - either they are really sick (enough to be in bed with a fever and a cough) OR they are kind of "uncomfortable/off color with a cough" for a couple of days and then start feeling better quick. The more sick people said they lost either taste or sense of smell... and it's taking longer to recover. It is kind of like the flu - where you are really sick for a few days and then it takes 2 to 3 weeks to feel back to normal. So far, even with some exposure to someone just coming down with symptoms - I haven't had symptoms or felt worse than a normal/typical "not feeling good" (and if that's Covid19 - then I've been suffering from it on and off for years and years). I'm not sure if I've had Covid19 or not. I really only get sick when I get a Covid19 shot (vax or booster)... I'm sick with a fever and aches within 12 hours of a shot. and that lasts two days sometimes into a 3rd day. Back in May, I had a stuffed up head when waking up and red dry eyes a couple days in a row (the symptoms eased off as the day progressed) - but the trees were doing their spring thing and I was sleeping with the windows open. As soon as I shut the windows and turned on the A/C all the symptoms vanished literally over night. I don't think that was Covid19... I think I'm in the "Yay! Go Vaccine Go Vaccine!!!" crowd. At least I haven't been sick and had to miss any spring/summer events! unlike some of the people 'close' to me.

I think most of the reporting of Covid19 levels is coming from testing waste water... so it's more at the community level rather than number of individuals.

I just messaged a neighbor to see when I could drop off a donation for her animal rescue. I was worried about porch pirates if she wasn't home. She said come by any time, she's at home after testing positive today. Someone without symptoms sang in the church choir last Sunday and now 5 choir members have it. Harris County positivity rate is 23%

Well there is one meaningful statistic, the red areas have a higher death rate from covid. I would think they would learn.

Study of vaccine effectiveness according to a model says that vaccines saved 20 million lives worldwide between 12/20 and 12/21. Incredible accomplishment

We've got around 4,600 new cases here today. Our state is one that the governor is at least trying to be honest on the new case count. I don't know if Summer will get worse here, now that all of the kids are out of school, or if back-to-school time in September will be worse.

Case counts and positivity rates are going up in my neck of the woods. Before we had the home tests, I had reason to trust the numbers, since they made it so damn easy to get tested. Now, with the home tests, it’s harder to tell. But an uptick in cases isn’t that surprising with summer travel in full swing.
I plan on getting the whole family boosted right before school starts. I’ve read that getting the flu and Covid at the same time is pretty deadly, so I want to make sure we have a fresh vaccination for flu season.

We're thinking that we'll get our boosters around the same time, formerroomate99. I'm expecting another surge when the kids are back in school. It appears on WorldOMeters that the daily counts are going up again. I'm hoping we don't burn out our hospital workers again.

I’m hoping that there’ll be updated vaccines this fall. Updated for the new variants. Will get regular flu shot earlier than usual also
