Thanks for all the concern. We are all prepared for her fathers passing, he was nothing more than skin and bones before this, no one expected him to live past Christmas. As for my MIL, she's so stubborn that we expected her to live forever. Although if she's willing to die just to confirm her ignorance, no one will stand in her way. I'm so sorry you, your wife and your in-law are going through such a sad, yet maddening, ordeal.....

I'm so sorry tractor. We're dealing with the same with some of DH's side of the family. They'd rather "own the liberals", than take care of their health. So sad & unnecessary.

My SIL lost her mother, her stepfather and her BIL within a few weeks of each other just before Christmas. Mother was vaccinated- I don't know about the stepfather- but they were elderly and frail to begin with. BIL was over 60, overweight and smoked but he didn't need no stinkin' vaccine. So her sister lost her mother, stepfather AND her husband, all just before Christmas. My darn brother (married to this SIL) is STILL not vaccinated. He's 66 and runs 5 miles every day. Now that Delta isn't a big threat and Omicron is fairly mild I suspect if he gets it he'll be OK (which will prove, of course, that vaccines were unnecessary) ). My amateur opinion is that the virus mutated when the Delta variant ran out of hosts after so much of the population died or was vaccinated, so he can thank those of us who DID get vaccinated for the weaker variant.

My SIL still isn't vaccinated and takes Omicron as proof it wasn't needed.

THANK YOU!!! I wish I could get this thru to my sister - she won't get vaxxed, didn't vax her boys (who've both now had Covid), feeds mom this Fox news nonsense so she didn't get vaxxed, either. Sis claims she knows the truth, because she gets the CDC etc reports at work, blah blah blah. To tell if it's weaker, you have to look at cases in unvaccinated people who also haven't had an earlier variant. Even in the first round of cases, majority weren't *that* bad, even though high numbers were quite sick and/or died. Covid has likely culled our most fragile over the past two years, so that there's a shrinking percentage of our population left that's as highly susceptible to dying from it. Still some, but a much lower number unprotected. But omicron is so much more transmissible, and we've dropped nearly all mitigation measures, so it's mostly just a matter of time before everyone is exposed. Like mom (80s and militantly unvaxxed), ... and then dad (90s and beginning to shuffle, and only had J&J vax).

Yet people are still dying every day But she hasn't died. And round and round we go! She tried to use MIL being in the hospital with COVID as proof that she was right about not getting vaccinated. I told DH to keep her away from me if he wanted to maintain his "no family drama" stance because it was going to go down like Donkey Kong if she said something like that to my face.

Could have saved yourself a lot of money if you had just listened to Professor Google instead. Should have been like me and gone into the global domination gig otherwise known as scientific research. Our lair puts Google campuses to shame.

How is the Covid caseload at your hospital, pulmonarymd? Are you seeing improvement, or are the numbers going up again?

Our positivity was high last month but it did not really lead to a significant rise in cases. Infections now trending back down. We did not even get a mini-surge, The vaccines work

My ICU was filled with COVID patients during the Omicron surge. Most of them died like the first 2 waves. If it is "weaker" it is not by much Is there any common thread among the ones who land in the hospital? Unvaccinated, co-morbidities, elderly? I've seen a LOT of recent cases among friends and family in the last 6 months or so, all of whom are vaccinated. Most are 65+, some had a second case. It's been through my son's family twice, in November and earlier this month (adults vaccinated, kids not). All have been mild cases. I can't think of anyone I know who's been hospitalized with it lately other than SIL's family mentioned above. To my knowledge I haven't had it yet (never had symptoms, tested negative any time I might have been exposed). I figure my turn will come.

The severely ill patients are unvaccinated or have an underlying disease such as cancer. The major our admissions this spring we’re admitted and tested positive but were not sick with Covid. Most infections were simply a cold or bad flu. As swamp said, the vaccine works

Anyone who has the courage to mention that you can only die once and how this affects the mortality rates of infectious diseases gets a star in my world.
I have no memory of anyone else having the same poor taste. Hence you get a thumbs-up for courage. (Is there a rule against starting a written sentence with the word "hence"?)
If you can direct me to other folks making the same argument that Omicron and its sub-variants are not necessarily less virulent / we just have more immunity, I'd like to read that. Nobody else seems to be saying that, but it might be due to lousy data and the tyranny of good taste.

My Faux watching sister says Covid is over and it's just a cold. That's basically been her opinion since the beginning but she has been vaccinated. She now says she is through with Covid vaccines.
She also still says her positive Covid test in the summer of 2020 was a false positive. It was a PCR test.

Mich has said that COVID tests don't distinguish between live and dead viruses- that requires tests that are a lot less practical for large-scale use. That fact has made me nervous the two times I HAD to show a negative test result to travel- my Alaska cruise last year and returning to the US from Munich last month. It would really stink to have your trip cancelled or interrupted due to a positive test when the vaccine worked as expected and you're shedding only dead viruses.
