I disagee with your opinion. what part?
there is absolutely no doubt that we could have stopped the virus in it's tracks back in Jan or Feb if we had done just TWO things:
1) had a viable testing program 2) have quarantined and contact traced each infected individual and quarantined anyone who was in contact with them.
that is what they did in SK. their death rate? 50 per million. that would have given us 1650 dead. that is what they did in NZ. their death rate? 5 per million. that is 165 dead.
even if you give Trump some wiggle room for bungling the testing (I don't think you should, but lets say you do), the early estimates by HIS OWN PEOPLE were that we would lose 50-65k.
I hold Trump PERSONALLY responsible for 90%+of the deaths so far. you may CHOOSE not to, but you are going to have to make a case for WHY, and defend it, if you do.

FDA approved the Pfizer vaccine. We will now see a rush of people get vaccinated! Surveys show a consistent 20-25% of people who say nothing will make them get the vaccine. Just heard of a healthcare worker quit because the governor would not allow nursing home employees to get an exemption. There is a significant amount of crazy out there. Trump ran into it on Saturday. He deserved it, because he fanned the flames. But we will all pay for it.....FOR A GENERATION.
for those that don't understand this, here is why.
1) loss of knowledge and skill capital. this disease tends to strike people who have a lot if interaction with the public, and such people tend to have more skills and public value than those that have little interaction with the public. 2) loss of labor/productivity. I will leave that right where it lies. 3) long term chronic illnesses/cost to the medical system. I will leave that one, as well.
because of these factors, nations that fare bad during pandemics tend to underperform those in terms of GDP growth FOR A GENERATION.
Trump spent his entire campaign bragging that he would turn the economy into a raging inferno. rather, he has doomed us to be one of the worst performing economies in the world FOR A GENERATION.
Not to mention the effect on healthcare. I suspect you will see a higher number of people retiring earlier than they might hav without this. I can tell you this has likely moved up my retirement. Replacing that workforce will not be easy

Another thing I wonder about - i know they cut some of the teams around the world that look for and manage diseases before they get too big. If the teams had been robust, would they have caught it earlier, slowed the spread in China, kept it from leaving China, kept it out of the America's? I know it shouldn't be the job of the USA to keep the whole world safe, but often we keep ourselves safe and the rest of the world benefits. It seems like this one would have made it around the world regardless, but we won't ever know the impact of the decision to cut at that particular spot.

mary2029's comment was part of a multi-post back and forth concerning Trump's vaccine comment at his rally. Reading the totality of it would answer your initial question.

I was curious about how many people travel into and out of the US each year.
I found this via the Google for 2020. I'm guessing the number of travellers is higher when the world isn't locked down due to Covid19. So, there must be MILLIONS who have travelled to and from the US in 2021:
There were other sites with more detailed info (tables with years and countries and what air carrier brought them here...) that I couldn't parse down to an easily digestible number.
Percentage Calculator: 100000 is what percent of 19000000? = 0.53.
(I bumped up my guesstimate for how many migrants there are at the borders or just over the border to 100K cause it seemed like a nice round easy to digest number. )
I like how .53% of people who MIGHT be infected with Covid19 coming into America are of so much concern and the other 99.5% of people who also MIGHT be infected with Covid19 coming to America are not a problem! I guess it's easier to digest and get angry at a small percentage that one could concievably do something about (complain about no wall...) than to acknowledge a bigger problem that little can be done about.

However, with Trump as President, this is really moot because he wasted all the advance time he did have. There were things he could have done (that dusty Pandemic Playbook on the shelf) that sets up all the things you need to do, and what services do what. Instead, we got a clusterf#$&. You can have all the information available to you in the world, but if you don’t know what to do with it, information is useless.

People coming into the US (regardless of whether they are migrants or visitors) pales in comparison when you consider that roughly 150 million US residents are still unvaccinated. Effective the beginning of this year, visitors arriving by plane can get in with a negative covid test. Crossing at the land borders, there is no such requirement. Unlike other countries like Canada or UK, or a myriad of others, there is no requirement to quarantine once you are here. Certain states (Hawaii) did have quarantine requirements, there might be a few others, but I have no idea how vigorously they were enforced.

Since you feel that way, you might as well stay away from physicians in general, since, in the grand scheme of things, physicians are in what you would consider the “elite”, because we are highly educated

my understanding is that Delta started in India. so, how do Mexicans spread it, again? Joining this discussion late, but wanted to respond to this. I'd seen an article examining exactly this point (sorry, it was a week ago, no idea of where I saw it on Twitter). Some % of Mexicans crossing the border may have Covid, but it's not likely to be the delta variant - that's not rampant south of the border (yet), but is dominant in the US. I was talking with my sister, and she was livid about an article (AP, maybe) saying that Border Patrol was testing everyone coming across the southern border, because she claims BP is emphatically NOT testing anyone. She works with BP and DHS, but northern border. She's also quite miffed about sending agents from here to the southern border, because they immediately get Covid and have to quarantine, every one! "Why am I sending people down there just to have them go into quarantine?" So I asked, logically, why are you sending them at all? "Because we need more bodies there, and there's nowhere else to draw from." Leaving us shorthanded here - she's doing the jobs of 2 people, plus after-hours remote working a second job processing travel stuff for moving agents around; just learned her boss is unexpectedly in Germany to handle Afghanistan visas and relocation, I think.

I wouldn’t assume that what happens on the northern border happens on the southern. BTW, I have been across the northern border twice. For me to get into Canada, I had to have a negative PCR. So chances are a second test to get back into the US wouldn’t say anything different for day trippers than it did to get into Canada.

CNN, THE MOST UNTRUSTWORTHY NEWSITE IN AMERICA I think you should look up trustworthy. it does not mean "worthy of trust". it means "reliable". so, you are saying CNN is unreliable? I beg to differ. they are quite reliable. so is FOX.

Yep, we are very familiar with procedures here on the northern border. Local politicians have been agitating to open the US side to Canadians ($$), as soon as the Canadian govt opened the border everyone itching to cross the bridges learned exactly what they had to do... Sis was talking about the southern border situation. Yes, she's not there, but she's seeing reports, sending agents, hearing from agents cycling back here, etc. This article from NBC isn't the one she was talking about, but covers the same stuff. You have to read closely - it's semantics. My third bold is exactly what sis said - BP doesn't test, but if they show symptoms they are sent to local providers for treatment. What she didn't include was the info in the article about testing being automatic when LEAVING BP custody, or being transported. I'm learning sis is selective in the info she uses as proof. Not clear if she is deliberately editing for effect, or she's being fed edited info, or is misinterpreting sciency stats. A few weeks ago she was spouting something about vaccinated people being the superspreaders, and she sees the reports from the CDC that I don't see. A few days later I recognized in news reports a kernel of truth that linked back to her claims, but it was all misapplied statistics.

So the take home message is that if they are negative when they arrive, there is a good chance they’ll be positive when they leave. But you won’t know that unless you read between the lines. And the semantics that the BP does not test is true, but someone else does. LOL! I know this well. My sister does the same thing too. She recently posted on Twitter about ivermectin. It was actually a peer reviewed journal report, and they only posted that ivermectin use reduced viral load a few days faster in a hospitalized patient population. What the article did NOT mention was whether it lowered the risk of death, severity of symptoms, length of hospitalization, etc. Reading articles like this, it is important to look for what is NOT said. There is no doubt that the study she quoted did look at those more important metrics, but they were not statistically relevant, therefore not mentioned.

It's also occurred to me that the agents transferred to the southern border and immediately getting Covid are much more likely getting it from A) the local population they are bumping into immediately (hotel, fast food, transportation, etc); B) new co-workers bringing them up to speed on duties; and lastly C) immigrants they come in contact with during their duties.
Which groups are the most likely vectors? Especially if they get ill and need to quarantine IMMEDIATELY...

She is correct, no one is being tested going across the northern border……mainly because until a few weeks ago, it was closed and only essential workers were crossing. I wouldn’t assume that what happens on the northern border happens on the southern. BTW, I have been across the northern border twice. For me to get into Canada, I had to have a negative PCR. So chances are a second test to get back into the US wouldn’t say anything different for day trippers than it did to get into Canada. Yep, we are very familiar with procedures here on the northern border. Local politicians have been agitating to open the US side to Canadians ($$), as soon as the Canadian govt opened the border everyone itching to cross the bridges learned exactly what they had to do... I understand this. Locally, this down has been harmed by the lack of Canadian traffic. I read one report that Canadians provided $550 million in tax revenue to this county. That is not insignificant. Locally, you have to schedule for a PCR a week in advance to travel. There was some bitchiness on NextDoor about travelers taking all the PCR tests away from those who need it for possible exposures. There are a lot of other places where you can get tested, but limited places for a specified PCR. I scheduled earlier this week for our flight next week.
