I want to try to keep politics out of this if possible here Anyone following hospitalizations in the border towns on Texas/Mexico border? Some hospitals are 80% occupied with covid patients, but not with citizens. They have crossed over the border and our government releases them to the communities to deal with. Estimated 17,000 covid infections so far from the border crossers How is this different then back in the 1800's when the Army and traders traded infected Blankets with the Indians spreading Smallpox throughout the tribal lands? Can we not agree it is time to temporarily close the southern border due to pandemic conditions when we still do not allow travel from Europe or Canada to happen without these people proving they are not sick and spreading disease across the country? A simple response without politics, yes or no, would suffice to me. This is beyond political theatrics at this point, imo.

There are far more problems with this than the border. If Texas was taking significant steps to mitigate the spread amongst its population, instead of continuing to remain open, then this might be effective. Otherwise, from a population standpoint, this is a spit in the ocean The population of Texas is what, 20 million. The vaccination rate is about 45%. More than enough victims for the virus. A few hundred thousand is going to make the situation worse, but, unless other measures are also instituted, make no meaningful difference.

Close the border. Both ways except for necessary commerce.

Currently Louisiana and Florida have the highest rates of Covid infections. Do you not care about that? What about the 8th grader in MS who just died after being diagnosed with Covid?

www.nytimes.com/2021/08/11/us/covid-texas-hospitalizations-icu.htmlThere's probably a paywall or an article limit. Part of me is starting to strongly dislike that I can't share an online article I paid for. Atleast when I use to buy a newspaper I could let someone else read the same stuff I read. It's getting to the point that the free stuff is more easily available - and of the same quality as "free stuff" in general. If you want anything that isn't intended to be "ooo look! low quality free stuff that looks cool! it's Craptastic!! " you gotta pay for it. According the article (from 5 days ago): 10,000 Texans in hospitals with Covid19.

How many hospitals along the border in all those "small towns"? I didn't think actual Texans were getting Covid19. Texas hasn't exactly been asking it's citizens to do things that prevent the spread of Covid19 - I'm guessing because it's not a big deal down there and Texas feels it can handle any healthcare crisis on it's own - it's prepared. (you know Texas is independent and does it's own thing. Texas will take care of itself. Or maybe each family will take care of their family. I'm guessing Family is important. I'm not sure if ALL Texans are "family" or just some of them.... Family is tricky that way. You gotta decide who's family and who's not. I find the whole "family" thing confusing. )

A few hundred thousand is going to make the situation worse, but, unless other measures are also instituted, make no meaningful difference. And California and Arizona also share a border with Texas. Looking at the curves of new cases, they are not as bad as Texas. Assuming its people pouring over the border AND actually being admitted to Texas hospitals seems unrealistic and fiction. In the initial wave, quite a few people died, citizens, because they couldn't even get into the hospital. I will not believe without proof that magically Texas is the recipient of a bunch of non citizens that they chose to admit to their Covid wards. It really feels like fiction to ignore Texas is choosing to blow itself up. The OP might also want to look at various maps in this URL updated Aug 15 2021. The majority of the cases are not in border counties and many of the border counties have the highest vax rates in Texas. apps.texastribune.org/features/2020/texas-coronavirus-cases-map/

The whole question is based on a false assumption. Reality: the majority of people become infected from interaction with someone they know, namely family. The majority of infections statewide are in residents of Texas. The majority of the population is susceptible to COVID. Blaming this on illegal immigrants is going directly to the right wing playbook. Infections in Texas can be controlled by masking, social distancing, and vaccination, just like they can be elsewhere. The disease is now endemic, it does not need anyone from the outside to spread it. And if we allow spread to continue, mutations will happen, and given enough spread, the delta variant would eventually occur here since it is more effective at causing infection.
Again, the pandemic ends when enough people are immune. You can get immune by vaccinating. If you choose not to get vaccinated, it highly likely you will get infected. I am not sure why that is so difficult to understand after 18 months of this.

By that logic, only one person needs a subscription, and they can just post links to all of the articles. That said - there were only 2 ways to share your newspaper - you hand it to someone you physically interact with, or you cut the article out and put it in the mail. You can still do the first one - hand someone your phone or tablet. Let everyone hold it and read the article. So, sure, you can't clip the article and send it to one person - maybe you could print it, or copy>paste the whole article into an email. But you saying you should be allowed to post an open link on a public forum, with a bunch of random people that don't even share their name with you seems excessive. Maybe you don't understand how business works?

I am not sure why that is so difficult to understand after 18 months of this. I found one article on the OP's premise I was willing to read that was current. It shared that the city of Laredo was bypassing the charities and organizations meant to screen these people so its not a federal issue as much as it seems to be a Texas or regional issue. Did not see anything that had legit stats on people testing positive and then being in such shape they needed to be hospitalized. The article had that 150 people had been put on busses per day and that would go up to 350 a day in the near future. Some recent Texas case counts per day have been over 17,000. Given that how can 150 people really peg the meter? They can't, even if they all had the virus. BTW, while Mexico isn't doing great, it is doing better than the US in relation to Covid.

I guess I'm just trying to compare sitting around face to face with everyone talking about this kind of stuff... where a newspaper or phone or tablet could be shared. The threads here sometimes feel like that "face to face" give and take kind of in person conversation. The ability to go -here read this newspaper article as I hand over the paper is what's missing.

Apparently it is hard as this article does not reference border hospitals at all, let alone admissions & stats.

Granted it will not show the 80% number and will not admit covid is rampant among the migrants but does list the numbers of covid migrants coming over and it is nt a couple hundred people......... If everyone here is fine with covid coming in on the southern border, so be it. I am not.

Unless you have real stats of who comes, who gets deported versus who stays, its hard to take the argument seriously. Again, Arizona and California aren't doing as badly as Texas. And Texas, in spite of everything is not doing as bad as Louisiana and Florida who are bordered by water and other US states. I'm fine with solving Covid in the US and starting with migrants is not the correct course of action given where most of the cases are. Perhaps noticing in the article you referenced, they aren't allowed to go anywhere until they are clean, might serve you better.

If everyone here is fine with covid coming in on the southern border, so be it. I am not. COVID does not need to come over the southern border. There is more than enough of it here to go around. Your conclusion is incorrect. In addition, what is the test positivity rate in Texans? I suspect it is fairly significant as well. COVID is being spread by American citizens quite effectively. About 1/2 of the population of Texas is still susceptible to infection, so they need no help to be in they disaster they are in now. And I repeat, it would be more cost effective if Texas spent it energy on getting everyone vaccinated. While waiting for the vaccine to become effective, they could mask and social distance, have masks in school, and if the outbreak is severe enough, good forbid, cancel football. All of that is likely to control this outbreak more effectively than deporting people. Since Texas does not see fit to do these things, I will assume that they do not see this as a crisis, so I see no reason to be concerned about what has you so worried.

It's bad to have 2 or 3K people held along the border where maybe 1K of them have Covid19 but it's good that Florida (and Texas) let anyone and everyone do whatever they want if they have Covid19? The World-o-Meter says Texas had approximately 8k new infections on 8/16 and that Florida had 17K new infection on 8/16. Hmmm... be more concerned about less than say, 10K people at the border with covid19 - who are most likely contained and not walking around breathing on other people .... or be concerned about the 100s of thousands of people walking around happily ignoring the threat of Covid19 and spreading it freely about the US. Life is full of tough choices... 10K people (contained and possibly with Covid19) or 100s of thousands of people (American Citizens who won't mask or vaccinate) .... damn....soooo hard to choose.... not. I'm guessing ValueBuy is going with get rid of the migrants at the border as a way to stem the Covid19 tide. Cause doing small things eventually leads to big things being done?? Or because he feels that American's have the right and freedom to spread Covid19 amongst themselves and stemming the Covid19 tide isn't really the issue... but rather it's the prestige and honor of getting if from a fellow citizen rather than "imported"? Is this a MAGA thing? American "spawned" Covid19 is better than "imported" Covid19?? Maybe people should be wearing patriotic stickers/pins that say: " I got my Covid19 from an American! MAGA!!!"

Is this a MAGA thing? American "spawned" Covid19 is better than "imported" Covid19?? Maybe people should be wearing patriotic stickers/pins that say: " I got my Covid19 from an American! MAGA!!!" Bolded. More like 9,000 to anywhere near maybe 19,000 cases. They only know of the cases they have tested. Not everyone gets tested, and there are thousands of migrants who never were caught or turned themselves in so we do not have anything near a true number of cases coming incountry. Now just take the cases they report. How many go into the hospital because of complications? None? One? Ten? One hundred? Everyone has to realize some migrants are in the hospital system. Now let's talk vaccinations of the migrants. Look how many have had one dose. Where do they get the second one? They are not held for a month to get the second one. We know we need two. The J&J shot might be the one they are getting, Idnk, but it is less effective too. Look at the numbers refusing the vaccination. And yet they are turned lose into the country ......and yet posters here talk about the trumpettes refusing the vaccine and are called all kinds of names here on the board. The dirty secret is that it is the black and brown population failing to take advantage of the shots for a variety of reasons, some legitimate, some for lack of knowledge about the virus and dying in higher numbers than their white counterparts in many sections of the nation. Former President Obama could go a heck of a long way with public service announcements to those communities and for the life of me I do not know why they are not carried 24/7 on local and cable channels. Sorry for drifting off topic. www.cbsnews.com/news/ice-ramps-up-vaccination-of-immigrants-in-u-s-custody-but-thousands-have-refused/

You keep missing the forest for the trees. From what I can see, texas is not acting as if they even have a crisis. The are doing nothing to mitigate the spread. COVID is here. I would care more about this issue if they were truly acting in a manner to stop spreading the virus. I am sure Friday night Football will go on. No masking in schools. Still have under 50% of their population vaccinated.
Again, the reason Texas is in the shape they are in is because of the policies they are following. The migrants contribute, sure, but it doesn't add up to a major component of it. And if you are afraid of them spreading it, wear a damn mask and get vaccinated. So much for the party of personal responsibility.
Just another way to take the focus off the real issue.

Ya, I'm having a really hard time being sympathetic. Your politicians whined and cried forever to get us to open our border with you (I'm Canadian). In the meantime we are on lockdown while American numbers are crazy and you are running wild. Ya, no sympathy here.

Texas governor Greg Abbot tested positive for the coronavirus. Maybe he shouldn't hang out with migrants!

Sorry for drifting off topic. www.cbsnews.com/news/ice-ramps-up-vaccination-of-immigrants-in-u-s-custody-but-thousands-have-refused/I think you are missing the point - a couple 10 thousand of people compared to HUNDREDS of thousands of Americans spreading the virus right this very minute. Is this like when a rusted out car dripping oil and transmission fluid and takes at least 30 seconds of grinding to start (it might need a new battery or ignition switch) is considered sellable for TOP dollar because it's got new tires - look at those new tires! Totally worth buying this car - look at those new tires and you might be able to get the seller to drop the price by $50.00! (and when the transmission fails on the expressway going home - and the engine locks - hey... you got those awesome tires!! it's a WIN! ) OR, like when you've just had an awesome time out - a live show, a wonderful dinner, company you enjoyed - but it's totally ruined because you got a pasta sauce drip on your suit - making it the worse night out and you will only ever complain about it because of that red sauce stain?? FWIW: I am concerned about people with the virus... am I willing to focus all my attention on what is a small detail in the bigger Covid19 - no not so much. I think it's better and more productive to focus on getting Americans who haven't been vaccinated - vaccinated. Do I worry more about 20 thousand or the HUNDREDS of thousands? Right now - I'm worried about the HUNDREDS of thousands of Americans spreading the disease because they are more of a threat to me than the migrants at the border. I don't fall for a used car with shiny new tires especially when the car is probably gonna die in a few days (if I dont' keep pouring oil and transmission fluid into it). and I don't let a pasta sauce stain ruin a great outing with someone whose company I enjoy. If you are more worried about migrants spreading Covid19 than AMERICANS spreading Covid19 - I'm not sure there's much here to talk about.

I'm confused at the point of this thread....I thought Covid19 was nothing more than a hoax, so why does anyone care of a bunch of migrants are crossing over with "nothing more than the common flu?" Isn't Texas one of those states that thinks its not that big of a deal?

A professor of preventive medicine was recently quoted that given the extensive transmission already in the U.S., "the immigration contribution is akin to pouring a bucket of water into a swimming pool. It’s hard to measure and pretty trivial."
Those trying to blame immigrants for the high transmission rates in southern states are divorced from reality. Those who actually believe it are, to put it bluntly, "Dumber than sh**." High transmission rates are the result of a large number of stupid people doing a large number of stupid things. Anyone remaining unvaccinated at this point (assuming they are medically able to receive the shots) should be forced to pay for care up front if they become infected. Cash. No insurance. If you want to make that choice, fine, but you own the consequences. They are ALL on you.

no, I don't trust NBC.
so, we were actually looking for a source for your claim that 80% of hospital beds are occupied by non-citizens. back it up, please.

Texas governor Greg Abbot tested positive for the coronavirus. Maybe he shouldn't hang out with migrants! if he dies, who takes over?

I didn't find 80% nor the word hospital in the article you linked. www.nytimes.com/2021/08/12/us/coronavirus-migrants-border-covid.htmlThis is from the NY Times. Granted it will not show the 80% number and will not admit covid is rampant among the migrants but does list the numbers of covid migrants coming over and it is nt a couple hundred people......... If everyone here is fine with covid coming in on the southern border, so be it. I am not. what makes you say that? do you know the claim is false? if so, would you mind editing the OP?
