I had not seen this conflict discussed in our media here in the D.C./Maryland area. Of course we have our own race and class struggles.

The Iowa Legislature is trying to not allow schools to teach the 1619 Project. We want to continue teaching the lies that have been taught forever.

We don't just contribute in this state we ARE the environment.

Let's take a look at a recent conversation I just had:
I posted a meme that discussed privilege as it relates to being able use hand sanitizer, socially distance, and lockdown/work from home.
A friend said "DELETING" Me: Okay, well, just scroll on by. 🙂 It would suck to have to consider that India experienced an increase of 1 million new cases in the time that we gained 100,000 i.e. two days. Them: posted a clapping emoji and then commented "one million that won't be coming to this country...our country....to take over." Me: Wow! Did you really just celebrate the death of one million people? Why would you do that? That is epically RACIST!! Them: posted a bitmoji with the caption "judging" Me: Yeah. I judged the crap out of you with that statement. You were happy that one million people died simply because they were Indian. THAT IS NOT COOL. Them: I'm NOT trying to be cool! I just want them ALL gone!!!!

They are refugees and we should welcome them with open arms.

How about Arabians? Iranians?" because someone they consider a friend was Iranian and I'm hoping to have a chance to bring it up if they say something like "Yes, all of them."

I won't be friends with people whom I know to be racist. Good luck to you. I unfriended them after that. (just now)

Got this in my DMs:
I'm not racist, I'm opinionated. [my uncle] and grandpa very opinionated!!! I loved Fred. He was an exception. Grampa and I were very on board with situations. Sometimes we didn't agree but we respected each other's differences. He would never have unfriended me....
I didn't respond. My deceased grandpa was racist. He didn't wear a white hood but it was there, in his language. Same with my uncle. That's the foundation that I fight to overcome each day.

Yup, 'uncle' Toms or 'pet coons' are OK. All others are not. I'm glad you took a stand. That's so sad to hear someone wish for genocide. I always hope for compassion but don't see it like I wish to.

It's no secret but it's not uncommon for folks to lump Indians and Arabians together 'cause...desert. It's like assuming all Africans are dark skinned. Or that all Asians look Chinese.

Huh? What situations would those be? Because it's obviously not the situation of brown people being alive in the world. But like other situations....totally on board! Some people are just unfathomably stupid.

How sad is it when you realize you don't know people as well as you thought you did? Thanks to social media, I am horrified by the blatant racism of some people I thought were good folk. But if course, they don’t think they are racist, they just worry about the plight of the white man since he is so down trodden now

FB has been a big eye opener for me about my extended family, as in cousins. For the most part, I don't care if I ever see them again because they are racist and anti-vax

I lost respect for one of my in laws after the whole pedophile pediatrician thing. I cannot respect someone who would mouth off like that about a FOUR YEAR OLD CHILD. Then she's just kept going with the Trumpism and all that. DH has a friend I also lost all respect for. I told DH I don't care if they hang out together but don't expect me to come. DH tried to say that's not who he is he's probably joking and I said that posting what he posts as a "joke" still makes you an asshole. On the flip side to my surprise I found out I actually agree with my brother more than I thought I did. It makes me wonder how my parents have swung so far the opposite direction. My brother and I must have learned our positions from somewhere.

My husband had a policy to keep those of differing opinions in his feed. He says he wants to understand the other side. It was not very healthy for him. After some discussion, he decided to stop Facebook for a while. He would still pop on occasionally, and he recognized that he was searching for anger when he did get on. He is backing off now, and letting go.
After seeing his plight, I paused the worst of my people. It has been glorious.

I unfriended most of them. It wasn't to cut them out of my life (they were not being blatantly racist like this, mostly just stupid with politics), because they're family, but I think its bad to just see the worst of people all the time, which is what ends up happening when mostly what they post are things you find distasteful. It just spreads hate. I'd rather just keep our relationship in person, in that case.

At first I thought I should not hide or unfriend people because I should hear all view points. After a while I realized life is too short for stupid and hateful people. Bye bye racists. I kept thoughtful people with differing viewpoints because they usually give me a perspective I did not consider.

My brother and I must have learned our positions from somewhere. perhaps your parents are like my mom - solidly lower middle class as I was growing up, who watched the welfare and (now)SNAP recipients appearing to live large while she meal planned out of necessity and dinner was sometimes a huge pot of 4 boxes of Kraft dinner and a pound of chicken wings....for five of us. I grew up in a solidly "Kennedy Democrat" house, under my grandmother's eye. I always knew Mom was drifting more right, but it took a solid turn after Nana passed in 2004. we were talking this morning about stuff in general, and she told me she left President blank on her ballot in 2016. but I know she told me she voted for Romney the time before. just food for thought.
