I saw this report. Even though you have a 10 year old lung transplant, you are on lifeline immunosuppressants, right? I have a friend with AI disease and she has had no response to the vaccine. There are probably a lot out there. Do you know of any work being done to help this group? For instance, the flu vaccine for the elderly has 4x the amount of protein antigen and contains an adjuvant, which is unlike that provided for the rest of the population. They are on lifelong immunosuppression, so she is high risk even 10 years out. I saw a report where they were giving transplant patients a third dose. That did improve the number of people who developed antibodies. We will have to see how that translates into protection, given the cell mediated immunity deficits in these people due to their drug regimen That’s what I thought. 10 years is a good time for a lung transplant, isn’t it? I had a friend who died on the transplant list for lungs. Back then, the 5 year survival rate wasn’t great.

I have had 2 patients transplanted, 1 died about 11 months after transplant and one made it 9 years. She had complication after complication that first year, but did ok for a few after that. It is definitely a tough row to hoe for these people

I'm waiting to hear about what people on immunosuppressants for other reasons need to do. It's all so unknown still.

The immune-suppression is another reason I have concerns about DH prospectively receiving a kidney transplant. Quality of life is the priority for him. To constantly be concerned about contracting something that would be of no concern to others is a problem.
I am thankful we have the vaccinations available and wish everyone would get over themselves and get shot.

I am thankful we have the vaccinations available and wish everyone would get over themselves and get shot. I go back and forth between wishing people would just do it and saying screw it. Let Darwin take them out. When pulmonary posted the 18K stat, I was thinking, "well, there's 18K less Trump supporting conspiracy theorists". But, of course, not all are and some of them can't be vaccinated, and even the people just being stupid have family that depend on/love them, so then I feel guilty.

The county where my stupid extended family Trump supporters live has a vaccination rate of 32% as of yesterday. It's changed 3% in the last month. University of Iowa epidemiologist believes in those counties it's mostly the elderly and nursing home patients who are vaccinated, especially because the numbers are not moving.
At least my county is at 60% vaccinated. Not enough but way better than 32%.
The Iowa Veterans Nursing Home is now having it's 5th outbreak. The guess is unvaccinated employees brought it in.

The Iowa Veterans Nursing Home is now having its 5th outbreak. The guess is unvaccinated employees brought it in. My Dad's LTC facility in SC had that happen and they think that was the source. Dad and (AFAIK) the other residents had been vaccinated. One of the items on the oral surgeon's COVID questionnaire yesterday was whether or not I'd been visiting anyone in a LTC facility recently. I can see why.

While we're in the land of vaccinations, anyone have any idea how much rabies vax for humans cost? Asking for a friend🙄 A quick Google says it's a series of 4 shots over a 28-day period, and ranges between $400-$1400 depending on geographical location and doctor. I don't think it's something the average doctor keeps in stock so you may need to hunt around a bit. I know our local hospital ER's have it for treatment of dog bite victims. They recommend boosters every 2 years for those at risk such as vets, vet techs, those working in wildlife rehab etc. This is the reason I'm more than a little irritated at my friend who refuses to vaccinate her dogs more than once every 5 years. If they bite someone, they are NOT considered vaccinated, they will be impounded at her expense, and the victim has to have the rabies series.

In a bit of POSITIVE news about vaccinations, my friend who survived Covid last year only to be told she might not be able to carry a child due to early indications of heart and lung damage, successfully completed cardiac and pulmonary rehab and was green-lighted to conceive. She is now 7 months in to her pregnancy and recently completed her 2-shot Pfizer series (they told her to wait until after second trimester). Baby is fine and, other than 24/7 "morning" sickness which has caused her to be hospitalized twice, she doing great. For the record, she had the same level of morning sickness during her 1st pregnancy. She's hoping they authorize the vaccine for little ones someday soon so her 2 year old can be protected.

My daughter and I went to the mall. It was 112 outside. My (fully vaxxed) daughter put on her mask, so I did the same. We went into 2 separate dressing rooms and I noticed the skin on my arms was all splotchy and I felt hot (not like fever, just like there wasn't enough AC for me). I took my mask off to see if maybe I would cool down a bit and the red would go away. I forgot to put my mask back on. Later my daughter asked why I took my mask off. I don't know if taking off the masked help me cool down - maybe just lessened my anxiety, but I am not super excited to wear the mask while it is this hot. I am having trouble regulating my body temperature this year - is that menopause or age?

We are required to be masked on the streets and all of a sudden I couldn’t breathe. I pulled my mask down and took a few breaths of unmasked air. It did help. Normally, I don’t have issues but haven’t worn a mask when it is as warm as it is here. I did rip my mask of& as soon as we got onto resort grounds.

I'm a fainter, and I'd likely faint under those conditions.

Heat, mask, age and menopause in combination is likely the culprit. One thing about hot flashes - they're always bothersome but after a while you get used to being hot and bothered.

We do not have to mask on resort grounds, but we do when leaving the grounds.

Looks like the symptoms for Delta variant may be different.
More like a summer cold.... runny nose, headaches.
The official line is that they are looking in to it........ but loads of anecdotes about people not realising they had it.

Looks like the symptoms for Delta variant may be different. More like a summer cold.... runny nose, headaches. The official line is that they are looking in to it........ but loads of anecdotes about people not realising they had it. That's not illogical. A virus needs a host to survive. It is a delicate balance between being virulent and not bumping off your host before they can infect others. That's why Ebola is concerning but was not worth near the hysteria it got. Ebola is so virulent your patient ends up immobile or dead before it can really spread far and wide. That's why the people who get it are the people who were coming in contact directly with the patients infected bodily fluids. The flu meanwhile might make you feel like crap but you are up and walking the entire time you are infectious. The flu is much more efficient at sharing its wealth. COVID can only mutate so much before it starts wiping out more hosts than it can infect or it can no longer infect us at all. While we need to take variants seriously there was a whole bunch of unneeded hysteria, viruses do not tend to mutate to become MORE deadly because that isn't in its self interest (so much as a virus can have self interest). Those strains eventually go extinct leaving the ones that are not as virulent but are much more efficient at passing themselves around. That's the dance that has been going on for millions of years. We drive virus evolution, virus evolution drives us. We'll be here again eventually, hopefully we learned this time but so far I am doubting it. It depends on how much the generations below us learn from our mistake.

Welcome to the club Cutting back severely on sugar while going through it, seemed to reduce my temp issues to almost zero. I'm past that, and I can eat sugar to excess again, without trigging female heat issues. Your experience may be different.

DS is vaccinated. It took him long enough. I guess all the wide-open places, no appointment needed and the incentives will bring in stragglers and that's worth it. DDIL has a mammogram scheduled so she needs to wait till after that. I am relieved. Kids too young- oldest is only 7.

Iowa doesn't have a state incentive. Governor says Iowans will do the right thing so it's not needed. Neither does WI. Anyone see the pictures of all the people packed into the Deer District yesterday to watch the Bucks Win the Eastern Conference? My DS was there, we can’t convince him to get Vaccinated. #FearTheDeer
