And herein lies the problem….. None of the current testing that is available tests for live virus. So as the number of vaccinated in the population increases, testing for screening is going to say a lot less than in an unvaccinated population. In a vaccinated population, a positive test is not going to differentiate between an actual covid case, or someone who has encountered the virus, their immune system killed it and you are shedding dead virus…..which is EXACTLY what a vaccine is supposed to do. Being positive and vaccinated is now an ambiguous answer with the current tests, and the current methods of testing for live virus are very labor and time intensive.

Thanks for that answer- as always, I appreciate the input you, pulmonarymd and others have contributed to this subject. That makes me feel slightly better about the positivity rate in the nearby county trending up a bit (14-day average of new positives/new tests was at 4.0%, now 5.1%). OTOH- it means that I could test positive just before my Alaska cruise if I fought off the virus and am shedding dead virus. Oh, good- I always need SOMETHING to worry about!

So what percentage of vaccinated people do we need to reach herd immunity? My county is currently at 80.6/72.7% for partially/fully vaxxed. The other 8 counties that make up the Bay Area are within spitting distance aka just about the same. If you throw in a coup,e of percent for those who had Covid but did not get vaxxed I think we should be getting close, but I am not certain. Can someone tell me this please. I want to know if we have reached the gold or fool's gold level
The percentages above are for all residents 12+ years old

The State of Iowa is shutting down it's free testing sites on July 16. Everything is fine here.

Since 5/1, we have had 10 positive tests out of about 880 tests. 3 vaccinated people tested positive. I know one was asymptotic. Since 4/1, everyone with severe Covid was unvaccinated. We will be dealing with this next fall/winter, but if you are vaccinated the risk will likely be low

Thanks pulmonarymd . I have been fully vaxxed (2 Shots plus 2 weeks) since mid March. As I had said before once it was my turn I would be there as soon as I had a chance - and I was...

The vaccine turns infections into a “cold” for most of us. If you live in an area with a high vaccination rate, your risk of hospitalization or death will be extremely low. I feel more hopeful than I have in 15 months

Your risk of testing positive is lower, but a positive test is still a positive test. We need to have a negative PCR to leave Belize in a couple weeks. This is always in the back of my brain too.

My employer has rolled out a $50 incentive to get vaccinated. And now all who show they have been vaccinated can forgo masks at work. I imagine that will mostly be the honor system. You are supposed to show HR your vaccine card, but not sure who on the floor would be in charge of identifying maskless, unvaccinated folks.

We had in-person meetings this week, and noone wore a mask for even a little. I do not believe they are all vaccinated. Half of them are rural-ish (or people who maybe identify as rural) Republicans. And at least one told me they would wait "to make sure all the at-risk people got their shot first". He said that like 2 weeks ago. We have had a surplus for months.

I feel more hopeful than I have in 15 months It was such a relief to have the whole immediate family vaccinated. For the most part we can't control what other people do, or even if they expose us to the virus, but we can reduce the potential for exposure with some precautions, and protect ourselves with vaccination that would hopefully do just that, turn the infection into a less severe disease. Again, what a relief to have vaccinations available!

Today is my fully vaccinated wife's first day at work with no mask required. The timing is perfect with local temperatures forecast to be triple digits for the next few days. She is excited. As am I. I will be mask free now also (having been fully vaccinated for a while but not wanting to risk sucking in virus and sharing it with her).

Tuesday was the first day that I ditched the mask at work and at the gas station. I've been fully vaccinated for six weeks but I delayed ditching the mask for a while for a mess of angry reasons. If you'd asked me about it, I would have said that I was wearing a mask to make it easier for unvaccinated and partially vaccinated people to do the right thing and wear masks.
But when my employer allowed fully vaccinated persons to ditch the masks, I changed my mind. Unfortunately, what changed my mind was seeing many of my coworkers go mask-less before the store opened and mask up when the doors opened to customers. I have no idea whether these people have been vaccinated or not, but I don't want to be part of their group. I don't want to be seen as a vaccine resistor and I don't want to send the message that I consider the customers a threat to me.
Being able to speak with my face again was glorious.
ETA: I am not a cashier. I might have made a different decision if I was chained to a register three feet away from an endless stream of people, many of whom wanted to talk. If I were a cashier, I might just keep the mask on because it shortens customer chatter and the cashiers are evaluated on speed of check-out.

It's been 8 weeks since the DW and I received our second Moderna.
Its been a couple weeks of mask free for us.
Still seems wrong to not have one on, still backing away a bit from people etc. when talking.
Haven't heard much on it, but still wondering if there will be a yearly shot for this like the flu, maybe combined.

We still wear our masks in stores and restaurants, except when actually eating, although we have switched to lighter weight surgical masks vs. the KN-95's which are very hot in our mid-to-upper 90's.

Here is another indication of how much better everything would be if everyone would get vaccinated.
More than 18,000 people died from COVID last month. Only 150 of those deaths were in fully vaccinated individuals. In addition, almost all hospitalized patients are unvaccinated. We have not had a positive test at the hospital in 2 weeks. If we could get a sufficiently high uptake of vaccination, we could be talking about a few thousand deaths/year from this.

No, it was part of my daily newsfeed from one of my association. Didn't break it down. But I would assume it tracks with what the previous statistics showed. More important would be to see what underlying conditions those individuals had, and why the vaccine was not protective. I would expect they are most likely old or immunosuppressed, like you would see with influenza

Yes some of our Delta deaths have been double vaccinated .... Its hard to say how many but they said 50 on TV last night. I don't know if its got anything to do with it.... but there is mention of a fungus in Covid patients.... and the deaths may have have had comorbidities. Our infection rate has risen 46% in a week. Europe are bracing themselves. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-57594954

I was supposed to take off for Albania tomorrow. I moved it because I was flying through London both ways and a few months ago they started getting really cautious about quarantining everyone. The rules were vague at the time and of course subject to change. As of now, I might have had to quarantine on the way home since I was staying overnight near Heathrow (thus technically entering the country) and since the trip included Albania, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro and Slovenia any one of those could have landed on the "red list".
And, as luck would have it, I just got back from having a messy decayed tooth extracted under light sedation. Probably not a good idea to get on a plane in 24 hours.

Just saw a report about a women who had a lung transplant 10 years ago. Fully vaccinated. Died from Covid.62 yo. I suspect the majority of the deaths in fully vaccinated individuals will be similar cases. We have a patient with Covid in the icu now, first one in about 3-4 weeks. 60 yo, unvaccinated, caught it from her son. We will continue to see cases as long as we have a large enough cohort of unvaccinated individuals

Has Delta made significant inroads into NY or the Tri-state area?

Even though you have a 10 year old lung transplant, you are on lifeline immunosuppressants, right? I have a friend with AI disease and she has had no response to the vaccine. There are probably a lot out there. Do you know of any work being done to help this group? For instance, the flu vaccine for the elderly has 4x the amount of protein antigen and contains an adjuvant, which is unlike that provided for the rest of the population.

They are on lifelong immunosuppression, so she is high risk even 10 years out. I saw a report where they were giving transplant patients a third dose. That did improve the number of people who developed antibodies. We will have to see how that translates into protection, given the cell mediated immunity deficits in these people due to their drug regimen
