Well, I love casseroles, and I didn't have them as a child. I was only introduced to them at church suppers as everyone keeps mentioning. The whole idea of throwing everything--meat, vegetables, etc.-- in a pan and letting it cook itself is awesome. I like making pot roast for the same reason. Oh I love stir fries for this reason... and braising, I'll also throw a whole meal in the crock pot... but casseroles just don't do it for me.

I love casseroles. I almost never make them, and I pass on green bean casserole because I hate green beans, but tater tot hotdish (MN for casserole), and most other cream of crap concoctions make me happy.

I have no idea what I do wrong with my crock pot but I've never gotten the delicious meals out of it people here do. Everything tastes grey to me when it comes out of the crock pot. I only use it when I want to do something like cook pork shoulder for taco meat.
I do love me my air fryer though I haven't mastered it yet. I got a couple new recipes to try and see if I have better luck.

If god had wanted me to eat tater tots, I'd have been born in Minnesota. You know, the uff da place.
If god had wanted me to turn up my nose at green bean casserole, he wouldn't have led my grandmother to the recipe the first time it was printed on the soup can label in 1955.
For those of you who dismiss casseroles altogether, it's because you've never had hot pineapple casserole. Or sweet potato casserole. Neither one has cream of crap soup. Both are to die for. I'm old and know stuff and wouldn't think of telling an untruth. So there.
Hot. Pineapple. Casserole.
Sweet. Potato. Casserole.

The egg casserole with hash browns sounds good. The other one described, with tater tots on top, does not. I make cheesy potatoes, which are good. Most of the other cream of crapseroles, I don't like. I developed a tolerance for the green bean one, since that's usually my MIL's 2-minutes-or-less-of-work contribution to Thanksgiving dinner every year.

Hot Pineapple casserole? I looked up the recipe. That has got to be a regional thing because I have never heard of it. No thanks. Though I suppose if you like Hawiian pizza this casserole may be right up your alley. I don't care for sweet potato casserole personally but DH and my brother LOVE it. My grandmother makes it every year for Thanksgiving. She uses brown sugar as a topping instead of marshmellows.

Mashed sweet potatoes, apple pie filling, spices, no marshmallows.

My idea of a good casserole is beef n bean burritos buried under a layer of ground beef (that's been mixed with tomato and enchilada sauce) and further buried under a pound or so, each, of shredded mozzarella and sharp cheddar.

We aren't much on casseroles I guess. DD and I like one with ground beef, vegetables and soy sauce with the crispy noodles on top. Also like something like scalloped potatoes. We don't use creamed soups, I like green bean casserole but not fixing it for just me. Noone else likes it. I like cream of mushroom on fried chicken, but again only me, not worth it to do that. I just read that the chicken producers are wanting clearance and getting it to start processing chicken with tumors and cancer. they have relaxed safety standards with meat producers. We don't like chicken anyway at our house and will likely buy and eat even less. Politics & Policy Diseased Chicken for Dinner? The USDA Is Considering It A proposed new rule would allow poultry plants to process diseased chickens. That’s the last thing Americans need. Recall that the president first pressured meat-processing plants to remain open after many had become Covid-19 hotbeds. Since then, federal agencies have suspended meatpacking worker protections, lowered plant inspection standards, eased labeling rules for manufacturers and relaxed enforcement of pollution restrictions for chicken and pig farms. Read through this article, its pretty sickening what is being done. www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2020-08-11/diseased-chicken-for-dinner-the-usda-is-considering-it?

First, 88%/12% ground beef at Costco is up to $3.99/pound which is ridiculously high. At least a $1/pound more than normal.
Second, you people talking about sweet potato/apple pie casserole are whacked.
Third, I've been making green bean casserole from scratch the past few year's. I use Martha Stewart's recipe.
Fourth, chicken and rice casseroles are great!

The big storms that happened here on Monday will be causing food prices to increase. Approximately 43% of the corn crop was destroyed. I just heard on the radio this morning that MN and WI are expected to have record corn crops this year at 20-30% more than normal so maybe we'll pick up the slack. You will have to. The estimate is up to 50% now.

Curious, anyone else grow up eating cream of mushroom as actual soup? I think we had one or two family casseroles that used it as an ingredient, but we mostly just had it as is. I don't buy it at all now. For recipes I just make a bechamel with some mushroom umami seasoning. My quest to make the perfect mushroom soup has been much more difficult as the canned version is not on my radar. I had some at a restaurant in Armenia 15 years ago and I just can't find it's equal.

Yep, for us it was never used as a filler for casseroles, but as soup. Mom spiked it with things to make it better though. Now, I make my own cream of mushroom soup, and have spent a LOT of time perfecting my recipe. I found that to make it best you really need to kill a ton of mushrooms for the base. If you’re interested in my recipe, let me know. Last time I ate canned soup was when I had no hips and TD was feeding me and working. I wasn’t about to bitch, and he did choose some of the better brands of canned soup.

You might want to look into Polish mushroom soup recipes. I'm not fond of mushrooms, myself, but I'm betting they're among the better recipes out there.

I'm so excited, I found the tubs of disinfecting wipes at the grocery store today! They are knockoff Lysol wipes, but I don't care. I haven't seen wipes since March. I don't even know how much they were, lol, I just grabbed them.

Somehow I only spent $80 at the grocery this morning. Despite buying meat for 9 dinners (for 2) and a bottle of Champagne. I guess this makes up for the $170 last week.

I don't even know how much they were, lol, I just grabbed them. Home Depot has their own store brand, HDX. I'd never have known except while looking for Clorox wipes, an employee happened along and pointed them out. They also have a store brand spray. About that cursed cream of mushroom soup. Blech. Our first night in our "new" house when we came back after the war, we'd gotten all moved in but by the time it was done, the grocery stores were closed. My mother had to serve whatever she could scrounge up...we had bread, butter, milk, and a can of cream of mushroom soup. I was six and had never tasted it before. It was beyond awful. I had buttered bread and a glass of milk. The soup sat in front of me until it got cold, and my mother gave up trying to get me to eat it. I haven't eaten it since then except when it was incorporated in a casserole recipe. Ew.

I had some cream of mushroom soup the other day. I was sick as a dog and chicken noodle made me nauseous and gave me indigestion.
I dropped a couple hundred dollars today between boxed.com and Amazon pantry. Both have some things that are decently priced that I wanted.
I'm starting to seriously restock for this fall. I can't tolerate wearing a mask long enough to do long shopping trips locally and have decided that since they don't make people wear masks here and most don't I will order what I can online or drive to a larger city with better enforcement.

I couldn’t get back to sleep and went to the grocery store where they had them in stock-grabbed the last large canister and one of the last small ones (limit of 2). Felt like I’d won the lottery. I’ve since ordered a giant pack of unbranded wipes off amazon-made in the US, quaternary ammonium salt active ingredient, $95 plus$25 shipping for 12 packs of 80 each. I decided it was worth the markup to not feel guilty about sleeping in on Saturdays

SOS is a regular here with lots of sautéed mushrooms, shallots and diced bell pepper added. But ours ends up as SON, because we serve it on egg noodles.

DH used to eat Progresso cream of mushroom soup. It was one of his favorites.
