Terrible is relative. Some residents of northern fly over country have been known to eat cod fish that was processed in lye. At least it’s not snails, or ground organ meat stuffed in a sheep stomach. I've had escargot once. It was okay. But I AM a big fan of chorizo con huevos. It's the Cali woman in me. I had chorizo con huevos this morning. Good stuff. Had no idea how much smoke you get in the kitchen when you sear chorizo, but it was really good.

I haven't had kidneys in decades but I remember them as really good. Beef heart too.
MIL made head cheese - that's one where the texture bothered me a lot.

And I've had snails. They're good, but then again, they were steeped in wine, butter, and garlic. Those three things make almost everything taste better. I am no fan of liver, kale, or tripe, but with enough wine, butter, and garlic, I would probably eat all three of them at once, with some good French or Italian bread to clean up the plate.

Just some oriental food. I will use pork, chicken, or beef, with some veggie broth, a package of likely sweet and sour, plus veggies and tofu. Or just tofu and no meat. Then when serving top with sweet and sour or soy sauce and rice noodles.

Packaged sauce and soy sauce are REALLY high in sodium, even the low sodium ones are high. You are a good cook and a good reader, get online and find an equivalent sauce that you can make instead that is healthier. 😁 you CAN do this!

I don't fix it enough to worry about the sodium. Besides believe it or not my heart doc said to eat more salt to get my blood pressure up, LOL! It was 104/67 today.

$527 plus $45 to replace some groceries I lost, so $672 Plus $70 from today so up to $742. Getting way up there again, its only the 17th.

I just added. We've spent $280, but $220 of that was a recent stocking up order to Boxed.com and Amazon Pantry that haven't arrived yet.
DS and I plan to stock up on meat the next few times we have to go to the store. Once we have a full freezer, we can easily go a month or longer without having to do any shopping. My goal is 2 months, but there's always ordering online if necessary or making a trip to a larger city.

I decided that I'm going to start fresh in the new house. I'll keep spices, but that's it. spices have either been up in the kitchen cabinet or sealed in packed boxes for the duration in this rental. I rooted through the non-perishables that have been in reusable shopping bags in the basement office, and pitched anything expired. anything unopened is getting donated to the local food pantry, anything open is getting pitched this weekend (in case I end up using it this week). I dropped off a bag of canned stuff tonight when I went out for fresh produce for the week, including the reusable bag. I'm going to pitch whatever's left of them on my way out. goal is to minimize the filth from this house that comes with me into my new place.

Olives are cured in lye. Didn’t know that. But I did know that several food products are processed using lye. But the idea of eating somethings made with the same ingredient as Granny’s Lye Soap was just too good a visual to pass up.

I still have some of the super emollient hand creams left, along with a couple of speciality olive oils. Best olives ever. I think I ate my weight in olives at breakfast each morning.

I did a meat run at Publix all because they sent me a $3 digital coupon. Lol. Ok, I wanted to pick up a few of their BOGOs, too. Most notable would be the cheese slices at 2/$5. These have gotten harder to find lately, but these have long expiration dates. Of course, they do--they are processed. I don't care.
I got 3+ pounds of ground chuck and divided it into 4 packages when I got home. A full pound of meat is unnecessary in most recipes like spaghetti, chili, sloppy joes, etc. In fact, I make my chili as a double-batch with less than a pound.
I also bought a pot roast. I haven't had roast in forever with carrots, potatoes, and onions. I think I will halve it and freeze half before I cook it.
Anyway, I spent $42 (after my coupon but including tax since groceries are taxed here). I got the ground chuck, the pot roast, some Chewy Chips Ahoy (also haven't had cookies or any sweets for awhile), 2 packages of cheese slices, 2 packages of chili mix (using one tonight), 2 packages of Scrubbing Bubbles toilet gel, and 2 packages of Scrubbing Bubbles toilet cleaning pads. The Scrubbing Bubbles products were BOGOs so cheaper than Walmart.
But it isn't much for what was really $45 worth of groceries, was it?

That doesn't sound bad to me. By adding a few pantry staples you've got enough for 6 main dishes for 3 or 4 people. Plus cleaning supplies. If you like chili, you should check out Budget Bytes' chili seasoning recipe: www.budgetbytes.com/homemade-chili-seasoning/Yummy! I'll never go back to the packaged mixes. Her fajita and taco seasonings are really good, too. I leave out the salt in all of them.

I leave out the salt in all of them. you should seriously just start playing with spices on your own. if you're willing to go off grid, so to speak, and mix your own taco seasonings at all....figure out what you like best. I keep a jar of "taco seasonings" that I mix once for a few months and my recipe is basically this - spices in a bowl and mix til it tastes good. I am a little heavier on the cumin and garlic powder than the average bear. YMMV. 🙃

Yes. I do that, too. I'll add a little extra cumin and cilantro to almost everything, just because I like them. Sometimes I'll add brown sugar to a recipe, too. My rib rub, steak rub and prime rib seasonings are all experiments I've come up with on my own. I still adjust as I feel like it.
I grow and dry a lot of my own spices, too. This year is my first for cayenne peppers. I hope they aren't too hot for me lol.

People around here must be stocking up for school breakouts. Dish liquid is hard to find again, paper towels OOS, and the only bleach that can found anywhere is the small 30 ounce bottles.
I broke down and ordered bleach from Amazon, it arrived in 2 days.

I think it might be a combination of school, pandemic+flu season, impending winter storms, and the potential for social unrest around the election. I spent about $150 yesterday on Amazon yesterday with a combination of the above in mind.

Yeah, I started thinking about my "winter stock up" early. Pre pandemic I would stock up in late oct/early nov for Dec/Jan/Feb (our coldest bad weather months) so I wouldn't have to think about "staples" during the end of November thru end of January "holidays" and the weirdness that is work in January/early Feb. I'm starting to buy stuff to "store" (as it's available) that I'll use during the winter months/early spring. I'm sure the stores will still have curb side pick up during the winter months.. I'm more concerned about availability. I can't wait for the cold months - when people just give up and go to large indoor gatherings and get sick. My "circled wagon" group(s) are already posing ideas for ways to safely do "fun social" things once the cold keeps us all home 7/24 because we can't gather in groups (indoors). I feel really bad for the extroverts in my groups -it's gonna be a cold, dark, lonely winter for them

Rural area of Virginia, about 1.5 hours northwest of DC. Only grocery stores available are Walmart, Martins, Target, Aldi and Costco. And all are wiped out. NONE of them have ever gotten a good stock of canned soup, hand sanitizer, wipes (including baby), TP, paper towels, dish soap, or bleach since March. You could usually find 1 of something, but definitely not all.

I never saw anywhere that was out of canned soup or baby wipes, but the other things you listed were hard to find in March, begining of April. This was the first time I had seen the Clorox wipes in a long time and there weren't very many. In general, Target has been the quickest to restock on things around here.

Publix has started to bring back their BOGOs. I got boneless skinless chicken breasts this week on BOGO. I didn't look at the ad first so I'm going back for the hot dogs I like and the canned white meat chicken (Valley Fresh) that I use to make chicken salad and a few other things. Both are BOGO. I'll put some hot dogs in the freezer. They aren't the healthiest, but they ARE protein. And I only eat one when I eat them.
I'm trying to clean out some of the older stuff in my freezer. Then I can buy new stuff before winter. Lol.

SS....can we believe it's going to be the first of September? In the past I was already thinking about soup making.....today I'm thinking I really need to clean out my pantry. I'm also trying to get my steel shelves in the garage a little more organized. The garage freezer is another issue of it's own.

I still have the 10 pound bag of rice I bought early when I didn’t know if we could get groceries without going to store. But Instacart and Amazon enabled us to get groceries. We’re both high risk so we were not chancing grocery stores. Chinese colleague always kept a large barrel of rice, he had been through the cultural revolution and knows what starvation means. Now I feel comfortable going to local quiet store where all wear masks, no longer wash down groceries as I did at first. The news that Covid is very unlikely to be transmitted through touch really made me much less anxious So what do I do with the 10 lbs of rice? As I’m typing thinking should donate to food kitchen I’m doing genealogy and many ancestors were from Ireland, read during the famine thousands of families were removed from their land, houses demolished. Famine occurred so often in many countries, Armenia, Ukraine, China, Ireland..... we are the fortunate
