Jersey Girl....I was the bravest of the 4 Golden Girls.......I sneaked off to Walmart to get thread and some fabric, bought some groceries, even drove to the post office while the other 3 ladies were shaking in their shoes and being so careful. I also was shopping at Hobby Lobby for more sewing supplies. As it it today, all 4 of us are fine, we've all cleaned our houses more than once, 1 lady had to make a trip to Mayo in Jacksonville by plane...she made it with her daughter and all is well.
The question is now for a couple of us is when and if we rehire our cleaning ladies.

My grandparents and father remember the holocaust. My DH starved as a child (should have been taken away from his parents). We'll eat the rice, beans, dried corn, etc I stocked up on earlier this year this winter. No sweat.

A few weeks ago when it finally became available, I switched from Whole Foods delivery to Whole Foods curbside pick up. However, my local (new and LARGE) Whole Foods (4 miles away) didn’t offer curbside pick up so I had to drive 3 towns over for it from a smaller store with fewer options.
This week, my local Whole Foods finally started offering curbside pickup and my grocery shopping results are now almost at the pre-pandemic level. 🎉🎉

I went to Trader Joes after more than 5 months - they have a good system - allow only 3 people at a time, make sure they have people waiting 6 feet apart and only allowing people wearing masks inside the store. They have a tent outside on a section of the parking lot for the people to wait since it has been very hot here.
Last time I went was on 3/13 and the shelves were stripped bare. Other than 1 item, I was able to get everything else today.
We also went to the farmers market today and were able to get our favorite fruits.

I actually did a little stocking up on Publix's BOGOs today. The expiration dates were late 2022 and 2023. I figure it's not hoarding if it isn't in short supply. I do think grocery prices are going to rise even more. I don't have a lot of room in my freezer, but I have room for canned stuff.

Publix has started to bring back their BOGOs. I got boneless skinless chicken breasts this week on BOGO. I didn't look at the ad first so I'm going back for the hot dogs I like and the canned white meat chicken (Valley Fresh) that I use to make chicken salad and a few other things. Both are BOGO. I'll put some hot dogs in the freezer. They aren't the healthiest, but they ARE protein. And I only eat one when I eat them. I'm trying to clean out some of the older stuff in my freezer. Then I can buy new stuff before winter. Lol. I noticed the BOGOs are back at our Publix stores as well, though not as many as I'd like to see. Paper goods are still stupid expensive here, like $8 for a six-roll pack of TP and $12 for six rolls of paper towels. Zero sales on any of those things. I am very glad I was stocked up before the pandemic, AND had the room to stock up. No Clorox wipes or Lysol spray here since March, (I hear Target carries both, but there's no Target near here; I may break down and check Walmart this week). A special back-to-school food ad section came out today, with stuff like peanut butter, drinks, and snacks on sale - I may head to the store tomorrow and buy some of the items in the insert, mostly because they are shelf-stable.

I have a Costco sized bottle of Lysol concentrate that I do for most cleaning. It’s now down to the dregs of the bottle, I’ve got about one more spray bottle I can fill from it. So this is on my list for the week.

$742 plus $142 of the meat I bought so $882 was the ending number.

I checked in that section back in April in curiosity, but have not been back to that part of the store since then.

I still have the 10 pound bag of rice I bought early when I didn’t know if we could get groceries without going to store. But Instacart and Amazon enabled us to get groceries. We’re both high risk so we were not chancing grocery stores. Chinese colleague always kept a large barrel of rice, he had been through the cultural revolution and knows what starvation means. Now I feel comfortable going to local quiet store where all wear masks, no longer wash down groceries as I did at first. The news that Covid is very unlikely to be transmitted through touch really made me much less anxious So what do I do with the 10 lbs of rice? As I’m typing thinking should donate to food kitchen I’m doing genealogy and many ancestors were from Ireland, read during the famine thousands of families were removed from their land, houses demolished. Famine occurred so often in many countries, Armenia, Ukraine, China, Ireland..... we are the fortunate I would hang on to the bag of rice through this winter, just on the off chance that things get bad again when the flu season hits. If you make soup, you can always use it up a little at a time by adding it to the soup.

The rice bag is an example of why it's always advisable to stock up on things your family already eats so regardless of what happens it won't get wasted.
The easiest way to do it is to simply buy multiples of shelf-stable things you already buy.

I've been using down the freezer supply of proteins a bit, so tomorrow's trip to Aldi will be a little stock-up-Cornish hen, lamb chops if they have them, turkey tenderloin, steaks. Pantry is still solid as I replenish anything used during my weekly Aldi run.

Our pantry is still well stocked. I'm starting to use things again now that we have a working kitchen, but I tend to replace things as I use them. Our freezer is starting to open up again. I can start looking for mark downs on meat and good sales again. Anything but chicken. I have a lot of BSCB.

I’m good for a long time again.

I saved the August receipts to add it up. $526 which is a lot lower than I thought. It was around $500 back in spring 2019 when I tracked a couple months.

We are stocked, I will top off some sugar. The biggest sugar refinery in the US closed, guess it was hurricane damage. Also the oldest. So going to add some to my stash.

Grocery spending was $454 in August, excluding alcohol but including nutritional supplements, which can get expensive. It still seems high- I'm a one-person household except when BF comes over for dinner, which might be 3X/month, and I might buy chicken or fish at Costco once a month. Very few restaurant meals, takeout or otherwise.
I wouldn't say I'm "stocked"- since a lot of my diet is fresh vegetables I can't hoard those unless I blanch and freeze them. I've got plenty of protein substitutes such as quinoa and chickpea-based pasta and a good supply of dry beans. If I run out of meat and fish, no big deal.

I spent $493 in August for two people, which isn't bad since it was a month with 5 shopping days for me. I've been picking up groceries once a week on Saturdays.
I am getting to the end of the side of beef I bought last year, but I don't want to free up enough space in the freezer to buy another one. The beef prices are rather startling after not looking at them for a year.

By switching to grocery pickup, August spend was less than $600 for family of 4 (18YO & 21YO still at home) - and I include paper products, cleaning materials, OTC meds & vitamins.
Very surprised -Normal spend is usually closer to $1,000!

I budget $200/mo for one person. August figures were wiped out when cleaning up YNAB, so Sept. is a fresh start. I'm still budgeting $200.

Over $880 plus last month.
So far this month $26 plus $51. So $77 for Sept. I have ordered a case of paper towels and 2 bottles of avocado oil, so $68 more. $145 and I'm going to need horse radish. Can't order it.

There was almost nobody at Aldi this morning. I think folks are completely stocked up and only replacing perishables like veggies and milk. I got apples, bananas, nectarines, strawberries, mushrooms, bell peppers, potatoes and wine. My freezer is full of proteins and the pantry has all my packaged staples.

I ordered 3 containers of DW pods and 4 containers of Allergy free All. Plus AZO and some yeast infection stuff. Would help me get through a day if I couldn't get to a doc.
Purchased us a new blood pressure cuff, the old one didn't stay fastened anymore and DD's glucose meter quit working. Everything at once. But better now then later.
I never got my sleeve of lids from Lehman's likely backordered forever, I think there is enough to finish this year.
I clean with ammonia and cheap Pine Sol, those I purchase from the Dollar Store or anyplace cheap. I used a lot of that cleaning at the house, so need to replenish.
Will add items as I think of them.
