Maybe I should have said northern flyover country. Nope. No cheese. Classic tater tot casserole is layers of browned ground beef, mixed vegetables, cream soup, usually chicken or celery, and tater tots. If a person wanted a Martha Stewart version, you could grind your own flank steak, add a selection of garden fresh veggies, cover with a home made bechamel sauce, and top with tots. Usually, right next to the tater tot casserole on the pot luck table is that other church basement classic, green bean casserole topped with crispy French’s fried onions. That sounds terrible. lol. Terrible is relative. Some residents of northern fly over country have been known to eat cod fish that was processed in lye. At least it’s not snails, or ground organ meat stuffed in a sheep stomach.

I have no idea what I do wrong with my crock pot but I've never gotten the delicious meals out of it people here do. Everything tastes grey to me when it comes out of the crock pot. I only use it when I want to do something like cook pork shoulder for taco meat. I do love me my air fryer though I haven't mastered it yet. I got a couple new recipes to try and see if I have better luck. You might try seasoning your meal during the last half hour of cooking. The long cook times required with crock pots tends to mute the flavor of many herbs and seasonings.

The big storms that happened here on Monday will be causing food prices to increase. Approximately 43% of the corn crop was destroyed. I just heard on the radio this morning that MN and WI are expected to have record corn crops this year at 20-30% more than normal so maybe we'll pick up the slack. Add in the fact that the reduction of cars on the road has reduced the demand for ethanol and I think corn will be plentiful this fall. Not a windfall for small grain farmers.

It stinks to high heaven while it's cooking...who'd want to eat anything that smells bad? I tasted it to be polite and didn't even spit it out, but I certainly did want to.

I'll try most things once. I got tricked into eating cat when I was in Okinawa. For the record, it tastes like a fattier pork chop. I loved Mountain Oysters as a kid. Can't eat them now 'cause...balls. lol.
As for the grocery front: I paused Imperfect this past week but will probably get a few things for this coming week. Just not cheese. I have a ton a cheese for some reason.

@donethat corn for enchiladas, tacos, chalupas, flautas, chilaquiles, nachos, tostadas flour for burritos, quesadillas, sometimes just warmed and eaten like bread with a meal
Then there are gorditas...not really tortillas, but a kind of bread-like dough made with maseca, a corn flour, and I don't know what else because I've never made my own...liken it to pita bread? and stuffed with whatever good stuff you like
These just off the top of my head. There are lots of others...you can tell what I eat most!
Escargot? If I never eat escargot again, it won't break my heart. Ew. Strong fishy taste and grainy texture...like sand. Maybe sand is what snails eat.
ETA: Forgot flour tortillas for fajitas. Typing all that stuff out made me hungry. I want gorditas. I want chalupas.

Corn tortilla, scoop of huevos y chorizo, scoop of frijoles refrito, blob of salsa either roja or verde. That's just how we roll, or rolled back in the day when we actually went to a taqueria and sat down inside. I miss that so much

Olives? I could have gone the rest of my life without knowing that.
BTW, @shastasnewlife, how are you feeling today? Did the lawn get watered?

We've been buying heat and serve chicken enchiladas from Sam's they are really good except they use flour tortillas. Flour tortillas should never soak in sauce.

I make chicken pot pie using cream of mushroom plus chicken and veggies interesting. a friend of mine uses jarred gravy for her sauce. neither sounds appealing to me.

I will say that it has bothered me a lot how intolerant some of us are of other people's food preferences. I don't care if you don't eat tater tots or casseroles. I do care about the "ews" and cream of "crap" comments. I haven't read anything that has convinced me YOUR food choices are that superior. I tried to own my choices, but it got worse and worse.
Could we please find a new topic before I hop on the bandwagon with a few comments or nicknames of my own?
Thank you!

I found some corn in my Imperfect Foods box. It's delightful. Some grassfed ground beef from a side I bought last year.....fantastic!

Olives? I could have gone the rest of my life without knowing that. BTW, @shastasnewlife , how are you feeling today? Did the lawn get watered? We used to pick the olives off the tree and then they were soaked in lye. After the lye a salt brine solution, if I remember correctly. You 1000% cannot eat an olive as it comes off the tree. I think the lye was to remove some chemical in them. If I remember correctly, the Native Americans may have also used lye to process acorns. You can't just eat those either. I feel mostly okay, but my lungs still feel really tight. The inhaler doesn't seem to do anything. I've used albuterol before and it would make my hands shake. This one does absolutely nothing. But Benadryl seems to help, so I keep taking that. I watered the front yard today. Tomorrow I may do the back. It has a lot more shade and requires less water. I also got really adventurous and cut all the dead flowers off the black eye susans because I read that might make them bloom again. They pretty red ones I left some to dry and make seed.

Never actually tried eating it. that is how I felt growing up with my family making poutine rapee, or Acadian poutine. 🤢 imagine smelling boiling meat, potatoes, spices, including a salt lick. my NB-raised family loves them. those of us raised here in the US call them dirty snowballs, because the cooking liquid looks like a slushy gutter after you strain out the poutine. www.atlasobscura.com/foods/poutine-rapee

My BFF growing up was German. Her mother made some sort of meat dish slathered in mustard. It would make me gag if I went in their house while it was cooking. Nasty, how do you eat something that smells so disgusting? lol

There were several nasty looking/sounding/smelling things my mom used to make from recipes from the old country. Some of them, I ate and liked, and others I wouldn't touch with a 10ft pole. Blood sausage, anyone? Or how about shredded meat in a clear gelatin with vinegar poured over the top? Those 2 were in the first category.

Neighbor made kidneys about once/month. Stunk up the entire neighborhood. Heritage was German but not sure if this was a German dish? Don’t know how they were able to eat this?!

My MIL made steak and kidney pie for her British husband, so TD grew up on it. He said the kidney made a really good tasting gravy, he just couldn’t get past th3 texture of the kidneys.

We had barbecued ribs, they were small but did not get really tender, and cole slaw. Same dressing I always use, hubs did not like either but ate it. I use Marzetti's cole slaw dressing, it tasted watery to me tonight, they have changed something in it. Tonight was not a success. I didn't want to cook so could be part of it.
He keeps saying just make it with mayo, I said that is not good, well that tasted like it had vinegar in it, well yeah, it probably did. But he doesn't like it made with vinegar and sugar either, grrrr. I get tired of cooking, damn. Wish we could go out and eat some, this sh** is getting old.

Oh and I like corn tortillas, DD and hubs only like the huge flour burrito things. We are just not on the same page for food.
