Target down the street has 5 lbs of potatoes for $2.79. Plus if you have a RedCard you get a 5% rebate Exactly!

Yeah, my first reaction at that suggestion was "eeuw". I seem to remember an episode of The Duggars where Michele was creating some sort of tater tot casserole which was a family staple. I have a mini-fridge downstairs that we bought when it was DH's Man cave. I think it still ahs some bottles of pop that are undoubtedly stale by now and it's turned on. I keep thinking it will be useful when DS and DDIL visit (they use the downstairs bedrooms) but they're perfectly capable of coming upstairs to get what they want and they're not here that often. I may try listing it as Free Stuff on Craigslist and see how fast it disappears. And I'm glad you're starting to feel better! You obviously aren’t from fly over country. For those of us from places like WI, MN, ND, SD, and IA, tater tot casserole is fine dining. A staple of church basement pot luck dinners and family gatherings. yeah, I included tater tots in my suggestion bc it seems like more people have those in their freezers than hash browns. I've never tried the pie crust with tater tots personally. but hash browns work great. just thaw a few out and break them up with a fork. as I said, I didn't think prepared hash browns would be so controversial when offered up as an alternative to store-bought pie crust. neither is scratch, whats the big deal?

I find it cheaper to keep a bag of frozen tots or hash browns instead of constantly buying potatoes that I don't eat. If I ate potatoes more often that might be different.

We don't have a Target, A Sav A Lot, Dollar Store, and a local chain. Right now farmers markets but even they are high this year. Dozen corn $6 and they raise it here

Corn has been 2 for a dollar at the local Grocery Outlet. They have really good corn.
I remember in the 1990s when DH and I used to get it in CA and it was 15 for a dollar... We always thought the local farmers must have grown it as a community service or something because it was so cheap - and it was typically white corn and fantastic.

The roadside corn stands have been opening up around here and it's typically $4-$5/dozen for peaches and cream. Next year I think I'll plant some again because it's pretty much a no maintenance, cheap crop. I just have to put up a fence because the rabbits have gotten horrible since the dog died.

A staple of church basement pot luck dinners and family gatherings. Missouri is flyover country, isn't it? I'm just trying to keep my cholesterol and blood sugar numbers healthy without meds. That means minimal rice, potatoes, white bread, etc. and nothing fried. And I'm assuming tater tot casserole involves some cheese somewhere? That's not on the list of permitted foods, either! Maybe I should have said northern flyover country. Nope. No cheese. Classic tater tot casserole is layers of browned ground beef, mixed vegetables, cream soup, usually chicken or celery, and tater tots. If a person wanted a Martha Stewart version, you could grind your own flank steak, add a selection of garden fresh veggies, cover with a home made bechamel sauce, and top with tots. Usually, right next to the tater tot casserole on the pot luck table is that other church basement classic, green bean casserole topped with crispy French’s fried onions.

I have had green bean casserole a long long time ago. But I've never had a tater tot casserole, or ever eaten a tater tot that I know of. It doesn't sound appetizing to me.
When hubs bought a bag of 5 dozen ears of corn for freezing, he only paid $4 a dozen, but he went to the wholesaler for that.
I paid a lot for peaches, they are shipped in. I thought the varmits got all my peaches, wrong there are a lot out there but not big and were hard, not sure what is wrong, maybe need a companion tree?? But the critters only left me 2 apples, going to see if my neighbor will let me pick off their tree again, its old and big. They also have a pear tree but said they aren't good till after a frost and I have never gotten any.

If anyone likes green beans and blue cheese, look up a recipe for green bean casserole with blue cheese sauce. Rich and quite tastey

It blows my mind that there are people on here that have not ever had a tater tot. It's such a staple around here that even people that don't choose to eat them for health reasons have at least had them before. Having said that, it's been a long time since I've had them. Target is one of my stops today, I might just pick up a bag.

Ugh, now I just added tater tots to next week's shopping list. I like mine simple- on a plate with sriracha and ketchup.

I had never eaten a tator tot until I met DH, so I was at least 20 before I had one.
I'll make them every now and then as an easy side if I don't feel like making potato wedges - never had them in a casserole though!
But when they are nice and crispy yet moist on the inside - yummy!

Tater tots topped with anything and all things nacho related, like beef and chicken fajitas, black beans, cheese, jalapenos, pickled red onions, whatever you like. Or just drizzle them with chili, top with cheese and diced onions. Tots are offered as a breakfast side here along with hash browns, O'Brien potatoes etc.

My DH got us Sam's club membership again, which we haven't had sinc we had babies, and we were getting formula there. OMG, hamburger buns are so much cheaper! I mean, a lot of stuff isn't cheaper, but the stuff that is makes up for it.
And, I love finding stuff in their clothes section. I got some Eddie Bauer fleece lounge pants for $13, and I tried them on, and they're to die for! Theyre soft, not too thin, not too thick, and they have pockets. OMG, I want to go back and get them in every color now.

It's a 30 minute drive for me so sometimes I have to buy them in town and it drives me nuts to pay regular price when I know I can get a huge bag for $2.50

We were Costco regulars for years because of the value pricing on so many things, including most of our casual clothing, but won't go in person and their threshold for free shipping is high. And they won't ship hearing aid batteries which was one of our big savings there.

I feel like they've made a resurgence. When I go to Braves games I sometimes get Totchos which are nachos made with tots. They also sell some sort of bbq and tot concoction that is good.

$527 plus $45 to replace some groceries I lost, so $672.
We think the fridge out there is running continuously so going to buy a new inexpensive one for the garage. Hubs looked at Menards. They may still offer 11% off and I can get 5 on my Bank of America card. He wants to get one with an ice maker, we have problems with this one so often. He said he may fix the freezer so it all fills with ice. We use lots of ice, I like that idea. The water supply isn't far away at the laundry sink.

So far this month I've spent $58 for groceries. Im still working on getting the garage freezer emptied along with what is in the fridge and freezer in the kitchen.
Cold weather will eventually show up and I want some freezer space for home made soups and a few other cold weather items.

The big storms that happened here on Monday will be causing food prices to increase. Approximately 43% of the corn crop was destroyed. I just heard on the radio this morning that MN and WI are expected to have record corn crops this year at 20-30% more than normal so maybe we'll pick up the slack.

I am a born and bred Midwest girl and I cannot stand tater tot casserole. Or any casserole that seems to by law here require cream of crap soup, sour cream, mayo or some combination thereof. My mom grew up eating all that and hated it so never made it for us, I didn't aquire a taste for it. DH LOVES all that stuff but I don't make it, he has to get it a church potlucks if he wants it.
I DO however love me some tater tots. If I am in a really bad mood I'll make some as a side because you can't be pissy while eating a tater tot.

I buy a bag of tots now and again, but am not generally a casserole girl. the closest I go to a casserole is to layer a pan with tots and pour loosely scrambled eggs on top that finish cooking in the oven. no cream of anything soups in the vicinity. also, I've never had green bean casserole. that just doesn't sound appealing, at all. steamed green beans? all day long. smothered in....stuff? hard pass.

Well, I love casseroles, and I didn't have them as a child. I was only introduced to them at church suppers as everyone keeps mentioning. The whole idea of throwing everything--meat, vegetables, etc.-- in a pan and letting it cook itself is awesome. I like making pot roast for the same reason.

I made Delish's version that is without cream of crap soup. You use fresh green beans and make a bechamel sauce with cheddar cheese and bacon. It was pretty good would have been better if my sauce hadn't broken.
