And it is 30% higher. 150k by the end oh July easy, could even be 175k, possibly 200h by Labor Day possibly 300k by the end of the year if we don’t get our collective act together. From an unknown disease to the third leading cause of death in a year. MAGA. We truly are exceptional. It would be funny if it wasn’t so tragic. The economic damage from not controlling the pandemic will be equally dire The economic impact is already bad to horrible for many sectors here- primarily the hospitality/ restaurant/ lodging industry. Many of them are now on the edge WITH federal bail out programs. If they stutter stop and open/ close again due to another cycle it will be catastrophic. The tourists are pouring in this weekend. Stay tuned. Maine is fucked this year. You have been having us southern NE quarantine for 2 weeks. Who the hell has time for that. With things spiraling out of control elsewhere, it is only a matter of time before it comes back. And since we have no strategy to deal with this, off and on shutdowns are the only choice we have. Sorry. And McConnell said the states are on their own, no bailout coming to the rescue

Savannah mayor made face masks mandatory of governor Kemp's objections. Sort of "dared" Kemp to sue the city. Mayor wants things slowed down with all the tourists pouring in there.

Last night was our first non zoom SLAP happy hour scheduled. No one felt comfortable enough to leave their bubble, so lots of ‘thanks but no thanks’.
I do have to note in my grocery store run this morning, 100% were wearing masks.

I read Maine's lobster industry is ruined. trump did tariffs the chinese retaliated and now Maine lobster has something like a 37% tariff on them while Canada does not. So guess where the chinese are buying from. They said Maine only has one electoral vote but they doubt seriously it will go to trump. Now trump caused this, like he screwed the farmers up and is talking about subsidies to bail them out. These sectors were doing well until he has now likely lost their markets. Killing people in this country.

You think it will still go to trump? I have no idea if Trump will get 1, 3, or all 4 of Maine's Electoral College votes

It's important to remember that this is 130,000 in 4 months. So 520,000 in a year. There are no signs of the rate of people dying slowing down. And this also does not reflect how many people have been seriously ill and not died. I think it will not hot that number. Improved care in these patients, and a younger average age of those infected will decrease the mortality seen earlier, I hope. If your number is correct, I can’t see how trump or a Republican senate survives the carnage I'd love to be wrong. But I'm afraid that your infection rate is getting higher so even with the lower mortality rate your death count will be high. Like I said, I'd love to be wrong about this.

I'm surprised at hubs, he needed something from Walmart in our small town. He said it was so packed he turned around and left. He said to many people to be around right now.

Indiana the last few days is back to over 500 new a day, we are going to hit that 50000 mark soon. It's 47,432 now. In a couple of weeks will likely really ramp up.

And since we have no strategy to deal with this, off and on shutdowns are the only choice we have. Sorry. And McConnell said the states are on their own, no bailout coming to the rescue Maine has actually done quite well by several metrics. We have had a low incidence of infection, and our governor's policies have ably controlled it thus far. While the economic impact thus far will be terrible, it has been mitigated a bit by the aid packages and the gradual re-opening. However going forward it is a big question. Maine's economy is always fragile, and the tourism industry could face ruin this year. I don't disagree that shut downs are the only rational choice, but that ain't happening. People have streamed in for the weekend, although not as many as in a typical year. Of and on shutdowns will almost do more harm than good. bearing the cost for personnel and supplies to open up, and the n to shut down again is very expensive, especially given that the openings are not normal, but costly social distancing friendly openings. Very costly. I am afraid we will see mass BK of restaurants, hotels, and other tourism related businesses. I think McConnell is wrong; there will be more aid to states. But the Feds have shown themselves to be inept so far in how they do it, and I don't expect the eventual aid package to be timely or targeted affectively for the businesses that may need it. Fortunately the state has 1.2B in Covid aid it can distribute now, and probably a good chunk of it will go to these businesses- maybe 25%. But it is impossible to say or plan where this will all go. We could indeed be fucked.

Now trump caused this, like he screwed the farmers up and is talking about subsidies to bail them out. These sectors were doing well until he has now likely lost their markets. Killing people in this country. Maine's lobster industry is indeed in tough shape, but it is not yet ruined. Yes, we have lost the Chinese market to Canada. The closure of US restaurants, put a huge crimp in the domestic market, and now a tepid summer will hurt consumption here in Maine, where we usually sell most of our soft shell lobsters, which can't ship long distance. Trump is promising aid, similar to what the farmers are getting. While I think his overall policy is nuts, this subsidy would certainly help at home in Maine. Can't go on forever this way though. Electoral votes: Maine has 4. We and Nebraska are the only two states that can split them between candidates. The winner of each Congressional District (we have two) gets one EV for each district. The candidate with the most popular votes statewide gets the other two. So it can go 3 and 1, and indeed did in 2018, when Trump got the 2nd Congressional District (north, rural) There is no way Trump will win the 1st District this year, and it is highly unlikely that he will carry the state. Hard to tell in the northern district yet, but at best he gets 1 out of four. Many of us are working to help Biden get all four!

Opening and shutting down repeatedly is the worst possible scenario. Which is why we should have used the time we gained during our initial shutdown to find what works, and how we could live with it. Just threw it all away with trumps lack of interest. Now it is surging again. Either we shut down, or we have an uncontrolled pandemic. Great choices. Thanks Donald

There's a group of 8 drinking and all up on each other on the opposite side of the pool. They're giving literally no shits. 🤦🏻♀️ My lovely pro-Trump SIL and her DH (who is 70) are on their annual summer trip to Florida with 3 sets of their friends. She's in the 'we have to live our lives normally and not wear masks or worry so much about this virus, it's just like the flu.' camp. I wouldn't care so much except that she visits my lovely MIL weekly. MIL is 87 and has survived cancer 4 times. MIL is also a Trump supporter but has been taking some steps to avoid exposure, staying at home mostly, and wearing a mask when she gets out out, relying on SIL and my DH to bring her groceries - but my fear is that SIL will get sick and spread it to MIL. SIL insists she will know it if she gets it, and won't go near MIL if she has it. I guess she thinks the disease happens instantaneously, like flipping a light switch. SIL also babysits sometimes for her 6 month old new grand baby who was born with some health issues. Fingers crossed.

If they don't get a test they could still have it and pass it around 🤦🏻♀️

I understand your stress. people going to do what they do sometimes, we just have to live with it, that includes your MIL and the baby's parents. hopefully they will put their foot down with no visits for weeks after the florida trip. I know it's tough!

I have so many questions about that. You guys are only hitting 1% for cases considered serious/critical. As much as I hate Trump, 99% of your cases really are pretty much nothing. I wish "they" would get the story straight on how it spreads.

I wish "they" would get the story straight on how it spreads. People who do not have serious illness still could be quite ill and not need a hospital admission. They could also have a prolonged recovery, and who knows what the potential long term consequences of an infection are. Could it increase your risk of cancer? Dementia since it can affect the brain? Increase the risk of asthma, as other respiratory infections can? Disease has been around a little more than 6 months. Long term consequences are unknown. Another irresponsible statement. Who knows what may happen to people. Another reason to avoid infection

Yeah our critical number is the same all the time... 15-16k... it never changes, even though 3-5k people die every week. So... take it as you will.
