Update on excess mortality www.cnbc.com/2020/07/01/official-us-coronavirus-death-toll-is-a-substantial-undercount-of-actual-tally-new-yale-study-finds.htmlThe number of confirmed U.S. deaths due to the coronavirus is substantially lower than the true tally, according to a study published Wednesday in JAMA Internal Medicine. ... The 781,000 total deaths in the United States in the three months through May 30 were about 122,300, or nearly 19% higher, than what would normally be expected, according to the researchers. Of the 122,300 excess deaths, 95,235 were attributed to Covid-19, they said. Most of the rest of the excess deaths, researchers said, were likely related to or directly caused by the coronavirus.

So... only 27,000 more than we counted... honestly I was concerned it might be more, so I'm not happy, but its better than I thought it could be.
Did they look at whether or not accidental death, etc. were lower than in prior years?

I have to wonder how many fewer deaths due to accident were reported. If that number dropped a lot bu ttotal deaths from all causes still soared, it is logical to imply that the under-counting of deaths attributable to Covid-19 was even worse.

At least here, there were fewer car accidents, but more fatalities. Theory was it was due to increased speeding given the lack of traffic

I know I've caught myself going too fast early on when there were fewer cars on the road.

I thank you for that comment, PMD. That possibility had not occurred to me but seems utterly logical.
I've definitely been pulled over for speeding much more often when the university is not in session. And it wasn't because the cops were bored or had a quota to fill. I was speeding in a place where it was not possible to speed when the traffic was heavier.

Oped - I was also surprised that we weren't undercounting more. I'm mostly just glad that the numbers fully show a clear excess to counter the hoax, and they're writing covid on all the death certs.

50k per worldometrrs today. A new high. Way to go. And it is just going to continue to get worse with the holiday weekend. Yeah Am I seeing this right? Looking at the numbers and the pace, if it all continues, by the end of next weekend, in about 10 days or so, there could be more than 3 million people infected (officially) in the country, approximately 1% of the total population

People want to ignore math, but it doesn’t lie. Fauci said it could result in 100k cases a day if we do not do what is necessary. But we still argue nonsenses; masks are a communistic plot. Other countries seem to be doing better. July is going to be ugly. Now Texas will not release hospital data, and the lieutenant governor thinks he is smarter than Fauci.

How many more are going to die before this is taken seriously? Is it going to take someone important?

I'd be a lot harsher on you if I hadn't spent a good chunk of the afternoon wiki-ing HC and BC. Apparently, there can be more than one, and neither of them matters.
It's gonna take someone else testing positive or being hospitalized to turn the tide. Maybe W. or Laura, maybe one of their kids. Perhaps McCain's widow or one of his kids. Scalia's widow might turn the tide. Mitch's family comes to mind. But Ben and Herman, fuhgetaboutit!

Just a clerical error of memory. I edited upon discovery. No need to laugh, cry, or sue me. And the color of their skin wasn’t pertinent, only their ‘fame’ as a response to a previous thread.

What the hell is he DOING? 7,500 tickets sold with zero social distancing protocols, no insistence on wearing masks, and fireworks, a huge fire hazard in abnormally dry conditions. Trump set for another massive event during national pandemic www.cnn.com/2020/07/03/politics/trump-mount-rushmore-fireworks/index.htmlCanada Day was last Wednesday. Everything was cancelled, from smaller local celebrations in neighbourhood parks to the huge blowout on Parliament Hill. Trump is running amok, claiming that Covid is well on its way out and will just disappear. He keeps patting himself on the back for the tremendous job he's doing. He doesn't give a rat's ass. How many more people have to die?

Even Vlad the Impaler was a better human being than Trump. He only put the bodies of his prisoners from the encroaching Ottoman Empire, up on spikes. He didn't harm his own people. Trump doesn't give a fuck how many Americans die.

Florida numbers still ramping up. Worldometer has them at 11,458 new cases so far today. They will probably pass over Texas tomorrow in total cases to take the number three spot. I am wondering what the future death toll will be from this current explosion of cases.
I had thought maybe they had reached their peak cases and would either steady state or go down a bit. Maybe most Floridians aren't aware how much its ramped up?

They aren’t close to the peak. Their efforts this week, meager as they are, will not have an effect for 1-2 weeks. Those cases are already baked in. So expect it to climb for at least another week. Remember it took a long time to see cases decline in the high hit states

How could it peak when they are doing next to nothing to contain it ? New York stopped it, slowly, by locking everything down. That isn't happening in Florida. There is barely any new rules... are they even mandating masks?

I'd say "you poor buggers"........ but actually we are just as bad. Young people thinking it wont affect them, so they don't care. India is in a bad way........ they have more than a billion people and the infection is out of control. People are dying at home without being registered...so no-one even knows what the real picture is.

I saw this......and it seems like officials there are trying to cover it up too.

Well, unless you get zero immunity from having the virus, eventually there will be a peak even if you do nothing as at some point more people will have had it than not. But that's not the peak you want. Masks are being mandated county by county. Mine has had it for about 3 weeks. One county next to us followed a day or to after but another one next to us only mandated them last week because "there's no enforcement ability so why require it" - I didn't check in when the dude finally mandated it. I think the Miami counties do and they closed their beach and reinstated the curfew. But the beaches near me are still open.

How many more are going to die before this is taken seriously? Is it going to take someone important? Well, if 3.5M Americans die, we still have a 99% survival rate - so I am not sure what the number is that will make people care.

If about 10% of that young population that gets severe disease winds up with permanently damaged lungs courtesy of covid and on disability, will they care?

We know the side effects for the seriously ill can be very serious... heart damage, clots, strokes,...... and lung xrays, so scarred, that look like French lace. but they have been reporting today, about a fairly common side effect of the so called milder infections.... Its a post viral illness......(exhaustion, low mood, weakness, headache) and its taking months to recover.

If about 10% of that young population that gets severe disease winds up with permanently damaged lungs courtesy of covid and on disability, will they care? It doesn’t even have to be disability. People get chronic asthma from viral infections. So they may now have a chronic lung disease. Or diminished lung capacity from scarring. You can do day to day things, but more thss as n that, you get short of breath and have exercise limitations. You can become more susceptible to respiratory infections, such that they linger, and increase your risk of pneumonia. So you can have a change in your quality of life without being disabled. Doubt a young person would want that
