Dad, who is 95, was taken to the ER last night. He suffered some kind of episode while at bingo.
He was admitted to the hospital.
So far, we know he has a brain tumor that has been there a long time, is blind and had a stroke.
He was also severely dehydrated, which is no surprise.
I am hoping when/if he gets released, it will be to a nursing home. He can't live alone since he is blind and he will need more care than he can get in assisted living.

He sounds awesome, being out playing bingo at 95 with all his health issues. I hope that he gets the care that he needs when he is released.

TOM, I've been wondering how things were going.
My Mom lived to be 99 and passed away this past June. It's hard I know, but whatever the results this time, I know you want the best for him.

My sister is no longer in denial. We talked more yesterday than we have in the last two years.
As much trouble as he has been having walking, we don't know how he got to bingo by himself. The person in charge of bingo said he wasn't right from the beginning of bingo and she had him brought back to his place.
There the director of assisted living, my sister and niece were waiting to talk to him about moving.
No, he will not be able to go to assisted living. He will need to go to a nursing home.
Thank you to each of you. Venting here has been a big help to me.
Knowing that he was cared for last night let me get a full night's sleep for the first time in at least a month.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with all of this. My own Mom sort of followed a similar path. From her own house, to assisted-living, to nursing home. But, she lasted a lot longer in the nursing home than the doctors told us she would. It's not over yet. Hang in there! Now is the right time to work with the social worker at the hospital, to help get him into a nursing home. If they can find him a spot, he should be able to move into one directly from the hospital.

I'm sorry about his rapid decline, but relieved for you that you have some answers and a solid next step to take. This is rough stuff, having a parent failing. Big hugs to you, TheOtherMe. You are a remarkable daughter.

Hugs to you. Please be at peace with yourself. I hope your Dad and sister will also have peace. I have the peace of knowing how hard I tried to get dad in to a better living situation. All the tears I have shed over his living situation. He is finally receiving the medical attention he needs. I don't know what symptoms would show up with a brain tumor, but he has never mentioned anything like a headache. He also never says any part of his body hurts and I know at 95 and as frail as he is, he has to be in pain. We are not making him go on a feeding tube. My sister, niece and I all agree on that. The only good out of yesterday is that I have hope now that my sister and I can reconcile and be sisters again.

My grandfather's tumor presented itself as signs of a stroke, as in he started having trouble moving one side of his body. Other than that he was in peak physical shape and if my dad hadn't been concerned about a stroke he may have gone a lot longer before being diagnosed. It was the neurologist that took one look at him and said it wasn't a stroke.
If your dad has already had a stroke it could very well be that whatever, if any, symptoms the tumor presented were misdiagnosed as part of the stroke.
It's hard apparently to sort out it's brain cancer vs the dozens of other more common brain issues those symptoms can be a part of.

I'm so sorry for the recent diagnosis TheO. You must be in shock. The good news is that your Dad is finally safe and getting the care he needs. I'm so happy that you and your sister connected again. You have always been there for him, and I know you will be until the end.

THEO - I'm sorry to hear that your dad got worse so quickly. I hope it's not insensitive to ask - you never mentioned him being blind before, was this a result of the stroke, or suddenly from the tumor? just trying to understand. Hoping you and your sister can continue the fruitful conversations. Be kind to yourself.

My dad

Now the doctors are saying he didn't have a stroke and they are trying to determine why he is blind.
The blindness has been sudden. It happened while he was at bingo yesterday. He walked to bingo on his own and then couldn't see.
There is a room in the nursing home that is connected to the facility where he has been living. When he is dismissed, that is where he will be going.
My best friend as an adult had a brain tumor which caused her to lose her vision. She had all kinds of symptoms and doctors were mostly telling her they were in her head. Turns out the illness was in her head. She had brain cancer and lived 4 months after diagnosis. When they went in to remove the tumor, it was inoperable.

If the doctor hasn't already scheduled testing, they need to see if the tumor has grown. And yes, it can affect vision. I'm so sorry your family is dealing with this.

I'm sorry your dad is going thru this.
I can't help but wonder if this contributed to his confusion and even hearing loss. Did they not do an MRI when the confusion started/worsened?
