Wrapping up before the long weekend. This month for two adults: Food $519.33 HBA $57.52 The food cost includes $195 for the half pig we are buying from a neighbor. Without that, I would have gotten close to my $300 monthly goal.
Ahem. Add about $50 to this as I bought fresh produce and a few other items last Thursday. I'm on a smoothie kick. That being said, both freezers are FULL, so there is no reason to buy proteins this month. We'll see.

I just spent $336 so far this month, but only half over, still not bad. But need little meat as the freezers are stocked.

Okay, the last 2 years groceries have jumped in price. I'm wondering what we are all spending now. I'm spending $600 /month for 3 adults. That includes dog food, cleaning products and whatever else is needed for the house.

My YNAB was so messed up I finally didn't even begin to figure anything. I'm starting all over in January. Even then, with just me me and my little dog living here, I'm betting it will be around $150-200- month.

We're going out at least once or twice every week right now. I don't even track our "food" expenditures in November and December any longer. I budget an amount and then just hope we come in near it. The checking account ain't red, so we're OK!

It is getting ridiculous. We are easily spending $1,000/month for 4 adults, WITHOUT buying much meat (other than our nitrate-free lunchmeat). The kids will be finished with college in May and plan to move out by September - I told DH it will probably be cheaper for he and I to eat out.

Looked at cc spending report for the year. groceries are a separate category on the cc I always use for groceries. Includes detergents, paper goods, shampoo etc bought at grocery stores or farmers market Will be about $6800 for year for 2 adults ( also when family is here - 12 adults, about 6x year) So about $130 week. Surprised that it’s not more I buy what I want, eat little red meat and do stock up when sales are on. Buy bread, rolls, fruits and veggies at a year round indoor farmers market. Farmers market significantly cheaper than grocery store and bigger fresher choice. No soda, but Lipton iced tea bottles, flavored seltzer

2 adult household with no pets. Looking at my spreadsheet, in 2021, I spent a monthly average of $367.66 on food and $82.24 on HBAs and cleaning products. This does not include what we spent on the half pig and quarter beef. I'm primarily a low carber, so I don't buy grains, rice, etc. DH does buy separate things for his lunches.

I spent $135 today but can do better. Some items were on sale and still to high as our local store is outrageous. I bought flour, 5 pounds, and it was $5 +, went to Walmart and same bag was $2.98. I know better so need to go there first and get some staples. Also need to go back to Kroger in the city, but of course, we don't want to lose our local grocer. They have another store in another city, but I'm sure they can't get prices like Walmart. Another lady was telling me she was getting bacon at Dollar General $5 something for 12 ounces. She said the clerk told her the boxes that came in had everything marked higher, so its happening everywhere.
3 companies own all the beef production. I know one is Chinese owned now, Smithfield, one is Brazilian owned, and I assume the third is American owned. That's a monopoly, what happened to these monopolies being broken up like they used to be? The farmers that do sell to them are certainly at a disadvantage.
Someone asked about me traveling without DD. I managed to go to Korea, think I left her with hubs, seems like he was home on leave then. But she was very upset. She LOVES to travel and is looking forward to going as much as me. She and I used to travel everywhere, she loves cruises and flying, eating out, and shopping. She is good company to me, but I do get tired. She can get around better now with weight loss so I will take her. Just have to be careful, she is on medicaid so if she gets sick away from here a big problem, but I will take her. If hubs and I tried to go alone, we did one time maybe 40 years ago, there is noone to care for her. Mom helped with the kids when they were young. His folks wouldn't help me with them. We might be able to leave her at an assisted living place here and pay cash for it. But she would be depressed, one day she will have noone, so we try to make her life good as we can.

Two to 3 weeks. We do have meat in the freezer. This total included a package of 18 hamburger patties, 2 pkgs of 5 chicken thighs and 1 pkg of 4 chicken sausages to top off the meat. I really miss the sales on small sirloin steaks of buy on package of 5 and get one or two packages free. We'd cook one package and freeze 2 or 3 for later in the week. Hamburgers for dinner one night. Chicken one night. And sausages. We'd go 7 days with those meals and the left overs. Edit: 2 senior adults. No pet.

Ish.....our food budget has gotten crazy.
I had my neighbor pick up groceries while we were gone so we had at least the basics. That was $65. My next major trip to the grocery store to restock from being gone for 2 months was $240. That hurt, but I did buy a lot of meat and 2 bags of shrimp. We hit Costco next and spent about $500, more than half of that was not foodso maybe $200? I did a small run last week and spent $50. That run was just milk, cold cuts, bread and some produce. So for the end of Dec and through Jan we are going to be up to around $650 would be my guess. TD has $500/mo for groceries, but I'm thinking we are going to need to bump that up to $600 for 2022.

I don't know but it is up, that I know. Groceries and meds are eating my lunch.
Gas not so much as I don't go often.
Ok, added it up $360 so far this month including today.
Pretty stocked up, only will need things like fresh fruits and veggies plus dairy. A couple of weeks will be stocking up on meat for $300 or so.

$370 so far this month and we are only half way through. But I have been making a lot of ice cream with HWC and artificial sweetener. That adds up.

This line item has gone up significantly for us since October as DH has switched to a mostly whole foods diet and increased our fish consumption. Unfortunately, eating healthy is discouraged by our capitalism.
We spend an average of $1000 per month on groceries. "Groceries" as a category for me includes toiletries and cleaning supplies.

It is that the system is currently set up to only favor the rich, or rich enough, eating well. Much like jobs and valuing labor and people.

To be added to my $234 from earlier in the month is $122.
The $122 included raw chicken tenders and ground meat. Both of those packages were divided into 3 packages each.
$356 so far this month. The total does not include toiletries or paper products.

I am trying really hard to keep the groceries to $500/month which would mean $125/week. I'm surprised how much I really have to think about it. Revising my grocery list has become my newest hobby. First I put down whatever we want, just like I used to. Then I go through the fliers to see what's on sale. The sales (and how much I currently have) dictate what meat I buy and when I buy stuff like toilet paper, paper towel, cleaners, condiments and coffee. Then I add up how much all that is. If it's over my $125 I go back and edit the list. It's amazing how this makes me realise what's a need and what's a want. Things needed for meals immediately stay. Things we are going to need before they go on sale again stay. Things I'd like to have on hand for a meal I might make 2 weeks from now gets bumped to next week. It has become a real "thing" for me. If I can stick to this budget it would mean $2,000 -$5,000 savings a year.

I feel like I grossly overspent today, about $40. However, I've learned when under-funded it is wise to pick up deals that might not be there next week let alone later in the week. Some things online said would be on sale are not. Some things I hoped to find, were not there. So, I bought two types of sausage on discount instead of one, because one may never happen again. I look for protein sources that generally fall into the $1 a serving or less category. Both ticked that box. Spoke to a vendor stocking in aisle, and he tried to help me find a store brand special. Did find it later, however, chose not to get it as its clearance time there. They are dumping my fave nondairy vanilla dessert. I bought it on discount, but I feel I shouldn't have. I spent a good hour plus going through the flyer to pick possibilities and then write up a list. I need to tell myself I did good. That store I am missing deals if I do not show up b4 Tuesday and the flyer starts on Saturday. The vendor thinks the other store I frequent stocks much better. Might be true, but they do carry different things. I love the store I shop the most because they carry Kosher stuff, which is great for someone like me who avoids dairy because they hate being sick. The sausage I bought that I did not plan on is healthier than the $2.99 one I got on sale. At 3.99 with I think 11gm protein, it uses the good ingredients like celery powder and the like instead of nitrates, corn syrup etc. I hope I like it.
I love surprise sales of food that's out of my budget now, but I would have bought in my IT days. $2 off the original price.

$416 month to date. That leaves me $84 for my last grocery trip of the month. I don't think I can do it. Everything has jumped in price. Not really huge amounts, but $1 on every item adds up.
I'm going to see if I can figure out a meal plan for the last week of the month for $84 that ISO will stick to. It's his lunches that do me in. The man does not understand portion control!

I'm playing one of my head games regarding groceries: shortly after DH passed, I decided I would go to Walmart every Friday morning (early) and my limit was $35 per week. It's not as though I'm short on money, it's that I like to challenge myself with some things.
Over the years I've forgotten that game until recently, and just remembered it a couple weeks ago. Each Friday I managed to keep under my $35 limit and I still have fresh food in the fridge.I think I'll keep playing it until I'm bored with it.

I organized my freezer yesterday and realized just how much protein I have. Not buying protein for the next few weeks is going to go a long way to helping me meet my grocery budget goal.

Wrapping it up for the month:
$239.34 Food $43.15 HBAs/Cleaning $282.49 Total
I should note I include tax, and usually add it to the HBA/Cleaning portion.

I am so jealous! $I ended up at $590. $90 of that was stocking up on Moon Cheese because it's on sale. I love it but I really shouldn't be eating it. I'll see if I can return what I have left.
