DH's gaming group reconciled. It wouldn't matter so much if it seemed like he cared about my opinion at all. This along with several other incidents this week probably lead up to a come to jesus discussion soon That stinks! Sorry I've actually been contemplating a talk with DH as well. Not necessarily about gaming, but about his attitude towards it vs everything else. He gets excited about x-wings. He's constantly planning, shopping, messaging, painting. He needs to find a way to bring some of that enthusiasm to his interactions with the kids. I signed DS up for a parent-tot sports class. I went the first 2 weeks because DS wanted me to go with him. I finally talked him into trying it with DH this past week and DH was just a big sourpuss about the whole thing. He didn't see the point, he could teach him more on his own at the park (great, go do that!), but also DS doesn't listen, the coach was terrible, it was a waste of time. I've been so stinking proud of DS when I take him. He is overcoming his fears and trying new things, learning to follow directions, developing an interest in sports, and yeah he doesn't understand or want to try everything, but neither do the other kids. I was just so disapointed that his take-away was all negative. He keeps harping on me that DS prefers me because I don't say 'no' to him. It is not that and he needs to figure it out.

You nailed it once again cktc - we live parallel lives. DD7's reading is improving by leaps and bounds because I spend an hour reading with her almost every night. On the rare nights that I tag out and ask DH to do it, he seems all bent out of shape. In my head I paraphrase the movie line "they're your goddamn kids too" (mrs doubtfire?). Or we're reading and DD11 and is sitting in the bed too reading her own thing and he's 3 rooms away on the computer. I ask him to come join all of us and he huffs as he does.
This weeks book was the giggler treatment by Doyle - literally a book about poo that had DD7 and I in stiches. We read all 110 pages in one night - so nonsensically funny. Yet, DH couldn't be bothered.

Ah. I thought the book was giving your DD7 giggle fits not that it was the title!

LOL - I was kinda wondering, why is she asking about the title, it's right there. DD is going to be so excited when she opens them on Christmas morning. this might be my big win present. In fact, I kinda think I got her this one for last Christmas and it's just been sitting on our shelf waiting for her reading ability to be ready. This kid definitely enjoys poo humor. And in this context, I didn't mind it. Heck, even his chapter titles are funny.

I think I'll try to have some talks about what things he enjoys doing with the kids and what he looks forward to about spending time with them. Hopefully he will start thinking more about how he can be more involved without me having to point out issues.

DH and K are really into The Secret by Bryon Preiss. They want to find the treasure box in our city.
I've also just tossed DH and the kids into spelling and math homework. He and they have figured it out and usually go to him for those assignments now. I usually get to help with the science and social studies type homework. No one is super thrilled with homework so if he's grumpy, too bad. If the kids are grumpy, too bad.

The other day in the car I asked DH and DS what they enjoyed doing together. DS said he liked coloring organs, DH said he liked when they play x-wings together. They've done both and have been bonding like crazy all weekend. Yay!

Ok I have to eat my words on this one. I took DS to class this week and the new coach that started last week is really, really terrible. Like I'm debating contacting the rec center to refund the second half of the course bad. I showed up 10 minutes early so DS could run around and get comfortable first, usually other kids and the coach are already there. She hopped out of her car and commented that I was early. Ok. Only 3 other kids showed up. She told us to practice throwing the ball. No instructions on underhanded or over handed throwing, no instructions on how to catch the ball. Same with batting. I'm sorry, I don't know how he should hold a bat. After 30 minutes of us playing with our kids while she played on her phone she set up some bases and a t-ball and had them each hit and run the bases for 10 minutes. Class ended 5 minutes early and she didn't even know what we were doing, where we were meeting, or what we needed to bring next week. On the bright side, DS pretended he was an octopus catching the ball with the suckers on his tentacles, and was deep breathing to get more oxygen for batting.

cktc - It sucks that they changed coaches and that the new one doesn't actually seem interested in teaching little kids.

So for xmas this year I'm thinking I might get some display shelves for DH's x-wing collection. I think he'd like floating glass shelves, he's already taken over my hutch. Any recommendations on where to shop or what to look for?

cktc - Ikea tends to have some really nice display shelving units, including ones that are very hutch like and have a solid base, where other bits and pieces of the collection could be stored...

Apparently these are baseball bat display cases. I might try something like that.

Dh got a 3d printer for christmas which is sitting in our closet until then. It was "only" $225. More than we usually spend but I didn't mind splurging because gifts are a big deal for him since he grew up very poor.
Anyway, now the video watching has switched from dnd campaigns and board game reviews to printing. Which wouldn't be so weird except they aren't really about printing but focused on reviews of the material used to print - I think it's call filament for the one he bought.
I just don't understand the time spent watching videos about a hobby vs actually participating.

azucena - In this case, if he's using a filament 3D printer, be very glad he's watching the videos. It has gotten better, but it was easy to completely ruin the early 3D filament printers if you had it on the wrong setting for the type of filament you were using, if you walked away for 5 minutes, even during a 3-hour print, etc. Him watching the videos now means that his 3D printer is not going to be one of those Christmas gifts that is broken by Valentine's Day.

Good point, but hours and hours of videos from now until Christmas? And, he knows at least two guys from the gaming shop that have this exact printer and have offered to help him get set up.
Meanwhile my cell phone is on its last leg and I asked him to figure out what the best black Friday deal might be but he hasn't found time to do that.

Maybe this is womansplaining, I've decided to get DH a CNC router with an optional laser instead of just a laser printer. We had an expensive laser printer at work for years. While it could do some cool stuff, it was expensive to maintain and the smell of burnt leather, wood and plastic isn't really something I'm eager to bring home to our garage. From the videos I've been watching the router works more quickly than the laser and you get a Z-axis, which I think will give him more fun options. And if he really wants the laser, it's only $70-120 to add to this machine. www.sainsmart.com/products/sainsmart-genmitsu-cnc-router-3018-pro-diy-kit?utm_source=homepage&utm_campaign=new_arrival

DH loves the CNC router. He says it's better for the stuff he is trying to do than the laser and he hadn't even considered one

The 3d printer has been up and running since Christmas. It's kind of fascinating since I couldn't envision how it works. You pull a template off the internet onto a thumb drive which plugs into the printer. In theory I guess you can code your own project but DH has no programming background and it seems like there is an unlimited number of projects already out there and growing. The printing material (filament) comes in a spool that looks like weed eater thread. It goes into the printer and comes out something like a needle that is super hot and melts it and the needle arm moves across a platform to make whatever. It dries almost instantly and is no longer hot. Projects take hours and hours though. Pretty sure the printer has been in almost constant use. Every night something is printing while we sleep - it's in an unfinished workroom in the basement right below our bedroom, but it's pretty much white noise thru the floor.
He got lots of filament for Christmas from me, the girls, and others - so far not a lot of extra spending. Filament doesn't seem to be that expensive, maybe $20 but I don't know how many projects that might cover, depends on size. He's had a couple of friends ask for custom stuff and offer to pay $20-30 so he likely self-fund. Budha Yoda was one to give you an idea of how custom existing templates are.
As I suspected, he's kinda obsessive about it. Running downstairs to set up a new project as soon as the last one finishes. Checking it first thing in the morning, etc. It's not a huge time suck though, and he's stopped watching videos of other people printing.

azucena - Don't forget to ask for something you want. I have a lovely little cat 'statue' that my brother printed for me. He also made me a chess set based on the oldest chess pieces over found.

I have zero creative bones in my body, so coming up with ideas seems like a lot of effort when my plate is already too full LOL. The girls are giving input on projects though. DD7 apparently has some kind of cross design that has been printed for my birthday. I'm curious to see it because she's really excited and DH let her have total say. I only know because they stink at keeping secrets
DH volunteered to help as the school got a grant to buy at least one printer in the next couple of months. We are waiting to hear who's in charge of it at the school. DH offered input on his research and ultimate choice of what to buy. If it's the same or similar enough, he could also help with setup. He also said he'd send links to good design databases (or whatever they're called) and places to buy the filament cheaply.

Do you have a favorite character from a book/movie/tv? Do you like a particular animal/flower/building? Is there something that makes you smile when you see it? Those are all things could be suggested for them to make for you. Or ask your girls what they think you'd like as a project? Besides the cross.

With the way my work life is going right now that just feels like one more decision and to do but I appreciate the idea. My gift was Jesus carrying the cross and it is subdued tie dye. DD7 was so proud of it that she put it in her bedroom last night. Gotta love kids

But then its another thing to store/display/dust. I can't get rid of stuff fast enough -- especially all the things that we make that I feel bad about donating/tossing.
